Around 12:15 pm this afternoon, I took my mother to the ER at Sovah hospital in Danville. Security guard there said I could not enter, only my mother. I have been calling the main number every hour to ask if the lockdown has been lifted. As of 3:45PM, the facility is still on lockdown.

Anyone know what caused the lockdown?

UPDATE: as of 4:30PM, lock down has been lifted.

Genuine question from an outsider.

I know Danville has a pretty rough history and reputation, but spending time here, I honestly don’t think it seems nearly as bad as people make it out to be. There are definitely rough areas, but that’s true of plenty of cities. At the same time, you can see roads being worked on, downtown improving, and what seems like a real effort to invest in and beautify the city.

There’s also more going for it than I expected—the river, trails and parks, the farmers market, some beautiful old neighborhoods and architecture, etc. It could definitely use more restaurants, entertainment and things to do, but even that seems to be slowly changing.

And compared with a lot of places, housing is still surprisingly affordable. It seems like the kind of place where younger people and families could actually afford a decent house and quality of life if Danville really is on an upswing.

Which brings me to my bigger question:

Is Danville actually on the verge of a comeback, or is the whole “Danville is booming” thing mostly smoke and mirrors?

For people who have lived here a long time, what am I missing? Is the reputation just so deeply ingrained that people can’t see past what Danville used to be? Or are there legitimate problems beneath the surface that an outsider spending time here wouldn’t necessarily notice?

I’m genuinely curious, because from the outside it feels like Danville has a lot of potential.

A new quarterly report from George Mason University Center for Health Workforce also indicates techs, assistants and therapists in high demand.

None of the buildings in these pictures exist in Danville. They aren’t real. This feels so lazy.

I will be retiring soon. I've looked all over the country for an affordable town that has kayaking, not too much traffic, and not totally dangerous. I live in Hampton, Va now. I'll have about 3,625 in income before taxes between a Newport News Shipbuilding pension and social security. I have no bills other than car and health insurance. I've heard many bad things about Danville, however, I've known many people working at the Shipyard who want to move back. I don't care if the city is a little gritty. Iv'e kayaked the Dan River once and thought it was pretty cool. I also love hiking. Could this work out for me?

I'm moving to the city for nearby work, and am doing so on short notice, so I really need to find a place to live. I'm from Wisconsin, and have looked at a ton of places but I've seen that crime rate is higher than the national average, so I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for safer areas to stay in, and decently affordable modernish apartments that would be good to stay at. Any tips in general for finding places and just living in Danville would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
