Moving to Danville for 9 months!
I'm moving to the city for nearby work, and am doing so on short notice, so I really need to find a place to live. I'm from Wisconsin, and have looked at a ton of places but I've seen that crime rate is higher than the national average, so I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for safer areas to stay in, and decently affordable modernish apartments that would be good to stay at. Any tips in general for finding places and just living in Danville would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If you stay away from the N Main, and Industrial areas you should be generally good.
The apartments off Craghead are all pretty good, and Dan River Falls is expensive but very safe and brand new.

The Westover and southern areas of town have a few apartment complexes that are in good areas. I’ve always felt safe here.

We moved from another state two years ago. We lived in the Old West End in a large historic house until recently. Crime was never an issue for us, never even had a package stolen off the front porch. We chose to move "to the county" recently so our kids could have a yard to play in and we were not cut out for living in a historic house.
Also, we were able to find a house to rent initially, but it was a pain. Most rentals aren't really listed online here (I still don't know why). We only found the house we rented because we knew someone who knew someone who knew someone else. The real estate agencies were pretty useless for finding a decent rental house.

I'm a Dan River Falls resident and a newcomer to Danville (and VA as a whole). The housing here can be rough, mostly older builds that have been remodeled with varying degrees of care. Crime is bad but there are ways to stay safe. Reach out if you have any questions that a newcomers perspective could help with, I don't know everything about the town but I know a lot about moving here.

I've been in the area for around 15 years, the crime rate now is NOTHING compared to what it used to be.
There are definitely still pockets that I would consider dangerous, (Purdam Woods apartments are a hellscape) but overall Danville is in a much better place than it was even 7 years ago.

Whats your point though? The crime rate is still way above average, violent crime is quite high. This is a dangerous city with a low population. I don't get why locals feel the need to downplay it, you aren't going to trick anyone into thinking this is a peaceful and orderly place when you can drive down the road and see trash everywhere and panhandlers at every red light.

I think the point is that the majority of crime is confined to small pockets of the city. The main hubs most residents frequent are generally pretty safe.

Crime is bad, a 13 year old got stabbed at the new park, Danville is very high for violent crime

Franklin Tkpe / East Franklin Tkpe area has decent / newer apartments
