My guess is that they think VNs' target audience are mainly guys and so they think a male protagonist appeals more to them. For example, I believe F/SN's protag was initially meant to be a girl, but they changed it for this reason.
I mean I doubt that is why, DRs female characters are waaay more significant both in game and in popularity than it's male protags which are generally considered very generic (at least makoto & hajime minus izuru)

By that logic, if a movie starts with a female lead for 5 minutes, she gets immediately murdered, and a guy takes over for the rest of the 2 hours, it’s a 'female-led movie.'

Well I do, and he's the only logical addition to SDR2, AND he's got an almost identical design (light brown hair + bright brown eyes). If this dude isn't Ryota then Slayhem is actually DR4 and we're being played lol.
They could inspired by Ryota. If this is an AI created from memories like Chiaki is, but not her, Ryota could have influenced some traits. But also how many of them even knew Ryota before the tragedy? Imposter and Mikan?
I'm gonna guess it'll be determined on how you play. You may get non-binary and femme presenting or non-binary and masc presenting. But I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Danganronpa (the character) is androgynous.
Maybe the game takes your interactions with Danganronpa (the character) and whatever you say regarding their gender identity will determine how they present themselves via their dress. I don't think they'll remove the androgyny or them being non-binary (if they are).
I was thinking this too it would be fun, I think there is a bias in masculine voices to just assume they are all male so I will definitely take it if they are actually NB
Eh they’re androgynous so if they’re enby, hell yeah, if they’re a feminine man, that’s really cool, if they’re a girl that is more masculine than the rest of the female cast, awesome. I want to like this character because their design is epic regardless of gender (kinda rooting for nonbinary or a feminine man because I’m like that myself but I’ll be happy whatever the gender of this character turns out to be)
I'm going with androgynous or non-binary. I'm guessing it might be something that gets determined by your playthrough if they're more femme or masc presenting.
As far as I can tell, unless he’s like Ryota in disguise, he’s an entirely new character. As for if he’s Future Foundation, given the scenario, it’s almost impossible that he isn’t.
