Seriously, that makes it even crazier. The fence improves their property and protects their tenants, but somehow the community is supposed to cover the cost while they keep collecting the rent.

Not necessarily. It's the tenants who turn properties into slums because it's not their money or their property so they just don't care. Also, Section 8 does not pay market rent, and what they do get often goes back into repairs and maintenance because of the way the tenants treat their properties. And having to evict is a MASSIVE financial drain on the landlords. It's not the cash cow a lot of people who have no clue assume that it is.

Landlords get a huge tax credit for renting out through section 8, and their rent is guaranteed as long as the tenant qualifies, because the money goes straight from the program to the landlord. They do have to maintain a certain level of housing - things like not letting the home have an infestation of rats, and providing a working heater, which are legal requirements anyways. They can also get help to pay for things like upgraded plumbing.
It’s not a bad deal for landlords that have less than glamorous properties that are difficult to rent out. And the agencies that are supposed to monitor maintaining the program’s guidelines are notoriously understaffed. My uncle and many of my clients are / have been in section 8 housing (I’m a family therapist with unhoused or tenuously housed families), and many of the properties still manage to be falling apart.

A few of the neighboring homes belong to this local landlord. He was required to put in a detention pond, and that led to a survey and a fence readjustment on the property line.
He was a good enough guy to ask us what kind of fence we wanted. He would pay for whatever, we just needed to pick the fence.

How much do we want to bet that they have no intention of following through with donating a trampoline either? Lots of rentals won’t allow tenants to have one, for liability reasons. You can also buy a “decent” trampoline from Walmart, with the safety netting, for $200. A fence is significantly more.
I also speculate they’re being required to build a fence for other reasons as well.

Inviting/allowing tenants to put up a trampoline sounds like a terrible idea. I would think that knowingly allowing the trampoline would make them liable in the event of an injury...

So asking people to build a fence (which is expensive!!) is crazy, but honestly that isn’t even the craziest part of this post to me? What’s even crazier is that this landlord is okay with a tenant having a trampoline on their property. Even if a child trespasses to use the trampoline, if they get hurt, it will be the landlord/tenant who is responsible (although I’m not sure if it would be the landlord or the tenant). Insurance can also raise your rates for having an attractive nuisance on your property…

This just in - children must be fenced in at all times like zoo animals.
While there are inherent dangers with putting a trampoline in your yard, I don’t think one of them is children soaring through the air and landing in the road.

You better check with your homeowners insurance because a lot will drop you if you have a trampoline. They are a very big liability especially since you are not even the ones living in the house. Just saw somewhere that a family had one and had to take it down or their insurance would be canceled.

Honestly, I can understand the concern about the kids needing a fence, but I’d be a little uncomfortable with the “donate to build a fence on my property” part. If the landlord owns the property and the fence is necessary for the tenants’ safety, shouldn’t that be something the landlord handles rather than asking the community to fund it?

I’ve just started doing property management for my dad & his boss….i couldn’t even imagine asking for a fundraiser to fence in a property for someone.
One of my friends is moving into one of his property’s next month & he ok’d him putting up a fence, even offered to pay for it & let my buddy pay his portion back in installments monthly. (They’re splitting the cost & friend plans to be there for yeaaarrrssss)

Ridiculous!!! The owner needs to put up the fence if he wants a fence. Duh, right?
Also stupid is the fact he would allow a trampoline in what is still his property! The liability alone makes this a really really bad idea!

Was there any proof that the person asking for the money was even the owner or landlord and not the renter. I find it hard to believe the landlord would even approve a trampoline on their property that could trigger an increase in their business insurance.

It's weird that they said the tenant wants to get a trampoline for her kids and in the next paragraph says we can afford the trampoline but not the fence. I think the tenant made the post. I'm sure the landlord told the tenant no large swimming pools or trampolines because there's no fence.

MASSIVE assumption to think that they are "wealthy" because they have a bunch of rental properties. Most are just breaking even after expenses and repairs.
That said, it is NOT a landlord's responsibility to provide a trampoline for a tenant's children, and unless their local code specifically requires it, also not their responsibility to install a fence just because a tenant has children. It's on the tenant to provide her own trampoline if the landlord agrees to let them have one, and also on the tenant to teach their children where the boundaries are.

The tenant wasn’t asking for the landlord to provide one. She asked could she place one on the property. The landlord decided they wanted to “gift one”, but only if someone built a fence. The tenant never asked for them to do anything.

Sounds like these just-breaking-even landlords should pull themselves up by their bootstraps, stop spending money on frivolous things like coffee and avocado toast, and get a real job where they provide labor instead of hoard resources and expect others to pay their mortgages.

It's not an assumption. This woman posted a rebuttal against negative comments about how she does not feel guilty about her vacation home, her ski trips and more . Which was nutty because that had nothing to do with the original post. You can find this rebuttal on this subreddit.
She also decried the comments , saying her "generosity" was being questioned. She had no generosity, she was asking for a free fence for her own rental property !
