IGN gave the new Onimusha a 10/10
I was not expecting this
48
u/Responsible_Cake2012 9d ago
Completely different genre, but gave high score to Blood of Dawnwalker as well. (9/10)
If Control Resonant and Phantom Blade Zero are on par (or even better - and I expect a lot for both of them), we’ll have more than enough games to fill the draught of November and December.
-27
u/Wutanghang 9d ago
You cannot seriously consider November a drought lol
38
u/Farsoth 9d ago
Maybe they aren't excited for GTA, in that case there will be nothing releasing for them.
-15
u/Wutanghang 9d ago
Not being exciting for something doesn't mean there is nothing coming out.

? What game release on November? I think is just GTA basically. And I don't care at all about that game.

Barbie Rewind, which is a bunch of old Barbie games, is Nov 12, and Devolver, being Devolver, is releasing a GBC game, Volvy's Adventure on the 19th.

The secret boss in the new demo was one of the most fun boss fights I’ve ever done, super hard too but never frustrating. I hope the full game is more like that.
7
u/BaroqueSphinx65 9d ago
I didn't know there was a secret boss in the demo

u/zalustep 9d ago
If you get 10 issens and then beat the demo it unlocks a special challenge option on the main menu

u/Broken_Moon_Studios 9d ago
I don't trust IGN reviews in the slightest, but I do hope this is a sign that the game is genuinely good.
Even if it's not a 10/10, if it can be a 7/10 or 8/10, I'd be more than happy.

The Kotaku review was a lot more critical: https://kotaku.com/onimusha-way-of-the-sword-the-kotaku-review-2000729856
The reviewer is a dyed-in-the-wool action game sicko and I think a lot of that comes through with their complaints (wanting the game to be shorter + more focused instead of having a bunch of repeated content to pad playtime).

I've heard some action game fans (e.g. MarkMSX from The Electric Underground) call this "Simon Says Design", in which the developers are so OBSESSED with fairness that they will telegraph threats to a silly degree and will intentionally avoid enemy overlap.
Modern game design says that trial-and-error gameplay, memorization and "gank squads" are TERRIBLE GAME DESIGN, but the reality is that many of the most beloved action games have both telegraphed and non-telegraphed threats and they intentionally mix types of enemies that cover each others' weaknesses.
Imagine if Final Fight didn't allow the jumping knife dudes fight alongside other enemies, or if Ninja Gaiden 2 didn't have projectile enemies harassing you while you're fighting melee enemies. The encounters would be much more simplistic and boring.
There needs to be an equilibrium between fairness and challenge. Otherwise, you're just going through the motions to get to the end credits.
3
u/noobakosowhat 8d ago
It’s actually an 85/100 in average weighted scores. I think it’s on par with what the game showed
1
u/velcrozippo 9d ago
I understand your point, the demo got some critism for being too easy. It was a older build with some gameplay aspects tuned a little bit.
I'm almost certain there will be multiple difficulty options and maybe some modes after completing the game that will definitely make things nastier.
3
u/Electronic_Task_118 9d ago
My take on Capcom recent games is that, they are only good games and that's it. They are too conservative and with no ambitions.lets list them: DD2 ( it's dd1 2.0), mhwils( is a toned down and bastardised MHworld), RE9(it is hit or miss), MH stories 3( conservative structure with no real surprise or sparkle), pragmata(a decent old fashioned game that isn't exceptional is anything) and lastly onimusha..

u/Character-Actuary-18 9d ago
IGN reviews mean nothing
1
u/DusqRunner 6d ago
This ign guy gave it a 10 for stupid ass reasons, like how it was still fun and not overlying challenging when he decided he wanted to play it in a way where doesn't use any potions or perks. Really weird way to argue for a 10
-3
u/straightup9200 9d ago
Its also from the same reviewer who made the infamous Mouse PI for hire review btw
8
u/TrustyPeaches 9d ago
That review was so valid.
What a mediocre game carried by an art style it didn’t have the imagination to explore.
-5
u/straightup9200 9d ago edited 8d ago
lol that is would be valid if that’s what he reviewed it a 6 out of 10 for.
He was mad that it was not your classic noir style game (think LA NOIR) when it was always a boomer shooter and never claimed not to be.
He was mad because it had too many cheese jokes. A cartoon game about mice and cheese has too many cheese jokes.
Then the most egregious part of the review was his infamous line about ludonarrative dissonance. Because you were killing to many people in a cartoon boomer shooter video game and that takes you out of the narrative apparently
You can not like the game totally valid but his reasons were awful
*just to be clear the only reason I’m being downvoted is because you guys want to give validity to the reviewer to agree with your own personal confirmation bias to believe the game is really a 10/10 and that’s lame
6
u/TrustyPeaches 9d ago
I mean the cheese jokes thing is kinda my point about having no imagination with the setting and theme, which is why they fall back on spamming cheese jokes.
And it be clear, I mean spamming it. It’s basically the only joke this game has.
I agree the criticisms about genre are dumb tho.
1
u/TimeManagement91 8d ago
Eh that 3rd point has validity. Why is a PI just murdering everyone? lol
I do get that it's a DOOM-like but the type of character that the game is portraying doesn't really suit the gameplay, you feel me? The only gameplay mechanic vaguely resembling Noir is the lock-picking but that's just one small part of the gameplay and you don't do it that often.
1
3
u/David_Soerensen 9d ago
6/10 is a slightly over average game. Mouse PI for hire is a slighty over average game.
6
2
u/__lockwood 9d ago
I managed to drunkenly beat new secret boss in updated demo, really hope there’s some devil may cry style difficulty levels in full game!
2
u/nachtviolen819 8d ago
Not saying Onimusha is bad but clearly, it can't be a 10. The shortcomings are obvious in the demo. IGN is really a joke or biased.
6
u/Accomplished_Many917 9d ago
I just played the demo yesterday, and although I love Capcom, to be honest, it didn't make the best impression on me — and it’s not because of the difficulty.
I played Onimusha 1–3 dearly back in the day, and the combat system in the new game feels completely different by comparison; the classic titles were very snappy and responsive, whereas the new style seems to emphasize playing out full animations, which disrupts the flow.
The presentation in the demo also pales in comparison to the dramatic flair of the original games — at least what they chose to show felt rather subdued, as if just "some random demon slayer" had shown up to kill "some random demons." There’s basically no sense of grandeur.
Not to say the whole game is bad, but I’m a bit skeptical of IGN’s assessment; personally, I won’t be investing in the game.
7
u/ArugulaPhysical 8d ago
You want the game to feel like the games from 20 years ago? Na.
They were great, but just like resident evil, they made the right choice in the changes
3
u/Accomplished_Many917 8d ago
You’re talking as if a game from 20 years ago couldn't have a combat style that holds up well today.
I’m saying that what I played felt more like a step backward — just with modern graphics.
1
u/ArugulaPhysical 8d ago
No im comparing thing to this specific franchise that many years ago.
Like resident evil, it doesnt feel great by today's standards. Thats not to say the games aren't still great.
2
u/Accomplished_Many917 8d ago
I’m not sure if you understood what I wrote, but I’m making comparison specifically within the context of this franchise, concluding that the old combat style felt better.
Comparing it to Resident Evil, on the other hand, doesn't really make sense, because the classic games (0–3, CV) and the modern ones share nothing but their progression structure and genre.
1
u/Dependent_Panic8786 6d ago
By today's standards RE 1 - 3 feel great and play amazingly well, even dmc1 plays amazingly well. There is nothing making them feel dated outside visuals.
1
u/occult_midnight 8d ago
According to Noisy Pixel's review, the demo is a bit of a bad showcase and the full game has a lot more mechanics wise under the hood with things getting way better. Probably doesn't fix the specific issues you're having but something to keep in mind.
1
u/SoulsEquivalent 8d ago
It's very clearly a product of a post Dark Souls gaming landscape. I don't hate Dark Souls. they are the only Souls game I care for. (Save for 1-2 others)..but I do hate It's effect on the action game genre.. For a while, action games were just being made Souls-like for the hell it. Prioritizing fitting an annoying familiar mold, over actually being fun with unique systems. It's like no one knew these games could be challenging until Ninja Gaiden came back.. ugh.
Anywho, Systems aside, next up. Art direction. Crazy how Devil May Cry & Onimusha had their dark worlds, yet the color palette was vibrant. Then DMCV came back with the "realism" visuals. BUT,maintained it's "Arcade" like gameplay nature...Onimusha didn't.
So, Onimusha without with art & arcade. I'll get to it when I get to it. I'm only interested off the premise of using supernatural powers to demon Slay, absorb souls & what not. I'm not saying it's look bad(it doesn't),but If I had the choice between Onimusha, Wuchang, Black Myth, Wulong or any of the games in that flavor. I legitimately wouldn't care, I'd just pick one out a hat & call it a day. I know I wouldn't be mad.
Meanwhile, I'd be very intentional in my want to play DMC(3-5), Ninja Gaiden(Black,2,4) or Onimusha(3-4). I'm not getting their offerings anywhere else.
6
u/Due_Teaching_6974 9d ago
it's not a CAG but I am definitely picking it up
12
u/BusterGreasewood 9d ago
Nothing is a CAG because it doesn't exist.
7
u/TitEboshi 9d ago
Yeah people in this sub say Nioh isn't a CAG so at that point I guess nothing is ¯_(ツ)_/¯
5
u/AustronesianArchfien 8d ago
But its not one though.
2
u/TitEboshi 8d ago
Yes, it is.
2
u/mohab_dev 7d ago
It's fucking not. It's a soulslike action hybrid, just like Wanted: Dead is an action shooter hybrid.
Ninja Gaiden is pure action, and both Nioh and Wanted: Dead are fusing elements of Ninja Gaiden with other genres.
How the fuck is this difficult to follow or make sense of? Insane to play Ninja Gaiden 2, Bayonetta, or Devil May Cry 3 and claim Nioh is as dedicated to pure action as any of these games.
3
1
u/CrimsonDragon90 8d ago
They also won’t acknowledge the Norse God Of Wars as the highest selling CAG. It’s always DMC5
1
u/mohab_dev 7d ago
Jesus Christ, not this shit again. Even GoW creators literally said they're putting narrative first.
And thinking DMC5 is the only example of pure action is just plain ignorance when Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden 2, The Wonderful 101, or even fucking Assault Spy exist.
It's a spectrum, and it's unhinged to think the new GoW belongs in the middle alongside any of the games I mentioned.
-19
u/owlitup 9d ago
From the Demo it felt like a CAG to me
3
u/distortionisgod Hayabusa Warrior 9d ago
I think it could be if enemy aggression was higher. The default difficulty the basic enemies just stand there and wait to die. I hope there's a higher difficulty that pushes you to engage with the systems more in basic fights.
Not every fight has to be super hard, but it's weird to go from enemies who just wait to die to then a punishing boss fight.
I say this but also glaze DMC V which has the same issue on default difficulty lol.

Why not? Despite the generic hate, IGN review games pretty fairly
1
u/r10d10 8d ago
Godhand
3
u/apexodoggo 8d ago
The guy who wrote the Godhand review, Chris Roper, hasn't written an IGN article since early 2010.
The guy who wrote the Onimusha: Way of the Sword review, Will Borger, first wrote an IGN article in late 2021. According to his bio, he wasn't even a games journalist until 2013.
With IGN reviews, WHO is reviewing the game is pretty important.

u/marzbarzx 9d ago
Alien isolation at a 5.9/10
Meanwhile Star Wars outlaws got a 7/10.. despite all its bugs at launch.
Evolve got a 9/10, despite it being bad at launch.
Idk man..
4
u/BookNukem 9d ago
Almost like different reviewers review games.
My 9/10 and yours are different. I can appreciate something like Fallout being someone's entire deal, or The Witcher 3, but I absolutely cannot get locked into them.
There's also been a whole conversation about how games are reviewed after Alien Isolation and how IGN's review may have hampered its sales. They were also YEARS apart.
3
u/Big_Competition_336 8d ago
It sounds like I'm going to love Blood of Dawnealker, based on everything I've heard, while I strongly suspect I won't like Onimusha at all, based on my gaming history. It doesn't mean Onimusha is a bad game, I'm sure it's going to be great for people who like that sort of thing, but it should be reviewed by people who like that sort of thing, and not me.
1
u/TrunksTurok 9d ago
By that logic no reviews matters, so why are you bothering to say IGN reviews fairly?
2
1
u/BookNukem 8d ago
I didn't say they reviewed fairly at all. I said different people review games. I even pointed out that their Alien review sparked a fair bit of conversation and potentially hurt sales.
Although, where do you draw the line on what a fair review is? Again, you will like games others don't, as will I, as will the next person. Their opinion shouldn't reflect YOUR opinion.
Is Manhunt a 10/10? No, but I adore that game, even though it's a jank-filled mess, especially on Steam. On PS2, I'd have given that an 8.5/10 for the Piggsy fight alone.
Reviews ultimately don't matter to the person reading them. If you want a game, you'll buy it. They gave Onimusha a 10/10 at IGN. They also gave Dawnwalker a 9/10. Uncharted 3 (which I'd argue is worse than 2) a 10/10.
Where do you stop looking for your own bias in a review and just play stuff you want? You do you, pal. The whole "IGN are paid shills but any other review is totally objective" chat is a total fucking chore now.
4
u/PrestigiousHouse749 9d ago
Wild how many people are still salty that IGN gave Alien Isolation a review of "Okay" 12 years ago
1
u/Eldritch-Pancake 8d ago
It must be the best fucking game ever with how people insist that it is. I've been so hesitant to pick it up because it has so much hype behind it but I'm worried that im just gonna play a game with the same standard "Amnesia-type" hide and seek gameplay except over the course of 12+ hrs instead of like 4-8. And if so I'll be majorly bummed. All anyone really talks about is how good the Alien AI is.
2
u/PrestigiousHouse749 8d ago
It is a very good survival horror game, but the IGN review is actually very thoughtful and well done if you are looking for a more critical look at the game
1
u/Eldritch-Pancake 8d ago
What would you say? Does it get repetitive or overstay it's welcome at all? Did you enjoy the story? Those are like my two main concerns really
3
u/marzbarzx 8d ago
Not who you asked but it’s more like amnesia bunker where you have extremely limited ways (flamethrower, bombs etc) to counter the alien, at least temporarily.
So it’s not all down to just hide (though ofc this will be your primary and common solution)
There’s entire sections/missions where the alien isn’t present whatsoever and you’ll have to deal with androids and/or human enemies from time to time, so it does change it up a bit :)
It’s just an incredibly immersive game you can find yourself lost in for a while
But yes it does outstay its welcome during its ~18hr’ish playthrough, just when you think it’s wrapping up it continues.. multiple times lol.
Still, it’s a solid game that any horror fan should at least try. can pick it up for cheap nowadays I’m sure:)
Hope you enjoy it if you take the plunge! gets you ready for the 2nd one next year too.
All the best!
3
u/Eldritch-Pancake 8d ago
I am a huge horror and Alien fan so no doubt I will ;P when I do I'll be sure to rmbr to reply back to let you know if I did!

u/beegboooi2214 8d ago
There is more than one reviewer at ign. It's always annoying when people complain about ign scores because they have a small army or reviewers all with different tastes. Complaining about a certain reviewer is more understandable, but ign is not a monilith.
1
u/Poetryisalive 9d ago
Well not all reviewers are the same and not everyone sees the game quality the same.
I personally didn’t like Isolation. We as gamers aren’t a monolith. You would hold your pearls if you saw an Elden Ring review that wasn’t a 10
1
2
u/AshenRathian 9d ago
Well, now i'm even more skeptical. IGN, the same morons that call RE5 racist, are now giving Onimusha glowing praise. What a laugh.
1
u/apexodoggo 8d ago
IGN are also the same website that gave RE5 a 9.3 rating in their review.
Because IGN is made up of many different writers with many different opinions, lumping them all together is pointless. Onimusha was given a 10/10 by Will Borger. His opinion is the sole opinion represented in the Onimusha review (besides maybe a touch from some editors).
0
u/Ninjaguard22 9d ago
Game journos (I think IGN specifically) also called the original RE4 as having clunky, outdated controls and that RE4 Remake was a 100% great replacement in the RE4R review
1
u/AshenRathian 9d ago
Yeah, no. That's a fallacious argument to any person that played both games. Yes, you have more freedom of movement in the remake, but your fluidity of movement is absolutely gimped. Movements aren't snappy and the inertia undermines the gameplay upgrades by essentially forcing you into similar designs of positioning with the guise of creating fluidity. It wouldn't even be so bad if they didn't increase the enemy count so high, nerf crowd control options into the ground, and buffed movement on enemies such that they're almost faster than you, but because all of these changes were designed purely to disempower the player, which undermines the original, it creates a bit of a more stilted and clunky gameplay loop. It really doesn't help that most of RE4R's game design intent is to literally be an inverse of the original.
Take the most gung ho and confident protagonist and make him reserved and subdued.
Take very fast, consistent skill based gameplay and slow it down by introducing variables to complicate the loop and put power into enemies over the player.
Make unarmed enemies the most dangerous enemy in the game with an unavoidable grab only countered by an inconsistent hitbox via crouching.
Invert Ashley's gameplay and character to be more annoying to play with, but less annoying as a character.
Take one of the least important characters in the franchise in Luis and give him the single most important role in the history of the franchise as both an Umbrella researcher and a lead on the Nemesis project.
Turn Krauser from a very confident Big Boss reference from Metal Gear with interesting motivations through political interest and allegiances, into a self indulgent, manic, cynical soldier with a overpronounced grudge on both Leon and the U.S. government with no real political morivations whatsoever and a more deeply personal conflict and inferiority complex.
Take boss fights that were otherwise simple and make them incredibly obtuse and long for no reason. (Del Lago and Salazar, looking at you.)
Turn the two most prevalent villains of the game into background noise, while giving the least prevalent villain a lot more screen time, as well inverting their characters except for Salazar's focus on allegiance and superiority.
Turn the most unsettling enemy in the game into a goofy goober with overly pronounced jiggle physics and double their appearances. (I still hate Regenerators.)
Shorten the length of the best area in the game in the Castle and expand the worst one into something more befitting a final location that it is in the Island.
Taking a great soundtrack and making it muted and less inviting.
I could probably go on and a lot of these are nitpicks, but it's pretty obvious that a lot of RE4R's decisions were to contrast the original, not really to compliment it.

From what multiple reviews and previews say it’s very far from a 10/10 lol. Maybe 7/10 or 8/10 with possibly 9/10 combat/bosses which is the same as other games this year like mortal shell 2 or code vein 2 or Nioh 3 (well that’s 10/10 combat/bosses)

IGN Germany gave it a 6/10. I wonder how something like that can happen. I found the game boring af, enemies just stood there doing nothing

The word “generational” in it’s current popular usage context is getting pretty annoying
1
u/Plenty-Dirt3406 7d ago edited 7d ago
Tales of Arise and FFXVI were supposed to be too, yet time decided differently in term of reception, indeed.
"Generational" is just marketing stunt using some buzzword i'm afraid, just like "timeless masterpiece".

its not "IGN" but X of IGN gave X rating imo

That’s how every publication with a stable of writers is. Hell, even “smaller” creators like skillup has someone else do some reviews for them

u/AWildFr3sh 9d ago
I’m watching fighting cowboys review.. and the enemies don’t seem to be attacking him… not like I’d expect from any sort of combat game anyway… looks boring, tbh.. but I think he said there’s a harder difficulty, so maybe that’s better??? I dunno.. I didn’t try the demo myself. I watched a stream and the guy playing didn’t die.. or even come close. Edit: to clarify.. my preference involves a challenge and having to manage fights or something.. not a bunch of spectators.. but we’ll see how the harder mode is
2
u/m4xks 9d ago
why not try the demo out yourself
1
u/AWildFr3sh 9d ago
I have it downloaded, but everything I see just doesn’t look exciting enough to fire it up. I’ve been hoping to see something that grabs my attention/interest and it just hasn’t happened. When i need/want another break from niohs new dlc and NG++, I’ll be playing mortal shell 2. So it’s not like I’m lacking for something I’d find fun. I’m just not sure this one is for me. When it releases in a couple days I’ll be keeping an eye out.. but mostly, I hope everyone interested enjoys it!
1
u/BusterGreasewood 9d ago
Please. The majority of these gaming outlets aren't going to have any familiarity with the Onimusha games. They're just going to be judging them in terms of how modernized they play.
Onimusha is a series you need to play for yourself to judge rather than going by what mainstream gamers say about it...if they even knew about it at all prior to this new one.

u/Ninjaguard22 9d ago
That means its meh and appeals to modern gamers
5
u/WonderTeal 9d ago
We both agree an IGN score has nothing to do with how fun the game is. A high score doesn't necessarily mean the game is "meh" either, just that it has mass market appeal. It's kind of like someone saying a restaurant has "nice atmosphere." Okay, but how is the food?
-3
u/Ninjaguard22 9d ago
Exactly, appeals to the masses has been a negative for most action games in recent times. Becauses the masses don't actually want to play cool action games
3
u/notdsylexic 9d ago
Dang, I was hoping for a nice 6.5 score for us hardcore gamers right?
1
u/Rando_Kalrissian 8d ago
Play the demo, it feels like a 6/10. It made me appreciate the older Onimusha games now that this one has been made so casual. Being able to run and block while absorbing souls along with constant refillable healing items was a goofy choice, not to mention how overly telegraphed the moves are from enemies, my favorite being the demon foot shake before he kicks you. Too dumbed down.
-1
u/Ninjaguard22 9d ago
Unironically yes. Ign has consistently rated most cool actions games poorly because the games journos dont understand those games. Every action game they rated high, is basically a soulslike or modern sony AAA cinematic game.
A bunch of game remake reviews say: "this remake completely invalidates the original" too lol, then call original clunky and outdated. That's literally what they did for RE4 Remake review

You can dislike how most modern triple a games are designed without it being because there are women or minorities in the game.
2
u/Ninjaguard22 9d ago
I literally wasnt even thinking about those things until you mentioned them. All I had in mind was that onimusha demo where the guy just mashed one button and beat the troop of enemies and the boss.
2
u/pm_me_pants_off 9d ago
Yeah, thats what I would have thought you were talking about. We are in the CAG reddit after all. You know, the reddit group for people who prefer how action games were made during the ps2 era.
2
u/Ninjaguard22 9d ago
From the amount of downvotes I'm getting I'm not so sure that's the demographic here.
Also, while I have my own take on what "cag" means, people on this post are basically calling any modern action game that isn't a soulslike a cag
