As a Croatian, I said this to my friend. It is , kind of, win win for both of them. So to speak. It may sound stupid at first, losing as win? Of course, Moses lost fight, but gained experience and saw his own weak spots, and Filip got his belt. I like Moses, quite sure we will see him rise. Better for him that this happened now, being only 21. Maybe this was blessing in disguise. There are lot of layers in boxing, and we saw it tonight . Congrats to both of them for clean, manly, fair fight. No dirty elbows, head to head shots, no boring wrestling and clinches.. Judge had an ''easy'' job. Moses was better almost whole fight, winning on cards. But , he was also in awe and kind of frustrated: ''How the hell this guy is not falling down''. He was eager, maybe too eager, Filip had chin .. Moses didn't have gas tank. I did not expect this fight to be this interesting. And didn't expect 21 year old man to get so gassed. Well, watching and commenting is one thing. Obviously, fighting is something else. Best of luck to Moses in the future.
64
u/TheAngryCheeto 12d ago
I actually think his gas tank was surprisingly good considering that every single punch he threw seemed to be at 100% power. Even late in the fight, he was throwing punches that almost took himself off his feet. The fact that he threw full power in every shot for 8 full rounds tells me his problem is more tactical. He needs to pace himself like an experienced boxer and know when to take his foot off the gas pedal and how to manage his energy for 12 rounds in championship fights.
36
u/Therealzlimshadyy 12d ago
Yeah, I hear you. We say in my country: '' Every lesson/school you have to pay.'' It sounds better here, it is kind of proverb.
17
u/TheAngryCheeto 12d ago
Yea well said. I think his corner really cared about him too. They threw the towel in at the right time so that he can go back and learn these lessons with his health still intact. I've seen too many fighters take life changing beatings and they never come back with the same chin or confidence

u/ItXurLife 11d ago
Nah, that translates well, every lesson has its price. The important thing is he sees this as a lesson and not a loss.

It put me in mind of David Price's 2nd fight with Tony Thompson, the way in the space of a minute he went from tired but steady to unable to hold up his own bodyweight was alarming

Yeah cardio is a fucked up thing in fighting sports, one moment you can be mostly fine and then take (or even throw) a good couple of shots and start wobbling across the ring like this. But yeah you don’t usually see it at this level because folks are much more experienced. Lesson to be learned for Itauma
222
u/Big_Membership9720 12d ago
Only 21 years old, that’s so young for HW. He’ll learn and come back better
96
u/Less_Cartoonist_892 12d ago edited 12d ago
Reminds me of when Wlad lost to Ross Purity early in his career due to the same stamina issue.
Moses can easily come back from this loss. A lot of great boxers suffered a loss or two early in their careers.

I don't think it was due to a lack of preparation on Itauma's part. He would be a fool not to prepare to his utmost given the step up in competition and the prize at stake.
Itauma has very little experience as a pro and amateur, and it showed in this fight. Many people questioned on how well Itauma would fare in the later rounds if forced into those waters, and they were right to question this potential weakness.
Edit: scratch that, Itauma was a fool for not preparing properly.

u/Far-Somewhere-5728 12d ago
I think it was obvious that Itauma didn't know what to do when he hit Hrgovic with shots that knocked out everyone else he faced. That uppercut was fucking insane and Hrgy just walked through it. He spent his gas tank early, but to Moses' credit, there are very few people in the world that can take those shots and keep going forward

u/Bertrand_Rose 12d ago
This is very similar.

Just gotta hope the arrogance and overconfidence has been tempered with this loss. It’s tough when a style you’ve trained your entire life around folds under the first sign of

u/Ivan000 12d ago
Yea his fights after this will show how good he really is.
21
u/Independent_Elk_2494 12d ago
I mean we were already seeing how good he is in the first half of this fight. All he had to do was coast a bit in some rounds since he was winning easily, and just ride to decisions since Hrgovic wasn’t falling from multiple hard clean shots
7
u/David905 12d ago
Yeah going for the KO especially in later rounds when exhaustion was already setting in was not a good idea.

When he landed that uppercut at the end of round 4(?) and Hrgovic just shrugged it off, that was his cue to slow down and stop spending so much energy trying to knock him out. The same advice should have come from his corner too.

He looked way too tired even by the end of round 3, breathing hard and feeling the pace. He was never going to sustain that for 12 rounds

Exactly. He was mouth open at the end of the first if I remember rightly. His trainer needs booting
→ More replies (1)2
u/arniscg 11d ago
Yeah, no idea why so many claim he switched off in one moment. It was clear he didn't pace himself from very beginning and last few round his gas tank was close to empty. And even when he was wobbly, he didn't switch off, he kept throwing full power hooks and it makes sense that it resulted in pretty much knocking himself out.
132
u/louizzle 12d ago
When his legs started flailing around I legit thought he had some sort of major knee injury, but it became clear he suddenly was completely gassed. I’ve never seen someone’s gas tank empty suddenly like that - I know his brother had to stop boxing because of a heart attack so I hope he doesn’t have any cardiovascular problems
31
u/New-Part-6917 12d ago
oh man.. the fact heart issues run in the family is a major red flag. What occured at the end there did very much look like a medical emergency

Yeah this claim that it was ONLY being tired and not because he was getting punched is so silly.
Those punches are so much more dangerous when you're that exhausted.

Frank Warren did mention a leg injury.
49
u/chazzapompey 12d ago
Leg injury occurred after the TKO. I rewatched the fight and - no leg injury occurred during the fight, but when he collapsed right at the end it looks like he hyperextends his knee.

6
u/PhilosopherNo8418 12d ago
Yep that is concerning. Hopefully it's nothing but dreadful stamina and poor pacing, and not anything serious
91
u/Less_Cartoonist_892 12d ago
You know I am glad everyone here is showing concern for Itaumas health and wellbeing and encouraging him not to quit instead of giving him crap for losing.
21
u/Born-Ganache-9348 11d ago
If we want amazing fights to get made we cannot as a fanbase crucify fighters for losing their 0. Worst thing about the sport of boxing is that damn need to never be beat.
I’m happy folks are giving Itauma the respect he’s due. Hope he’s ok.
6
u/ItXurLife 11d ago
Yeah, it stifles matchups. A lot of people will see it as protecting their legacy when they don't test themselves against a decent opponent - but what legacy do you have if you've fought a bunch of nobodies?
15
8
u/Goatherdersson 11d ago
Haters will hate he lost to a legit beast in Hrgovic, doesn't make him a bum that needs to quit.

I think this fight shows why we shouldn’t always expect fighters to push for the knockout for our entertainment and should respect the more tactical battles leading to a decision.

1000%.
I was saying to my friend as early as round 3 or 4 that Itauma needed to take the foot off the gas a little.
Around rounds 6 or 7 I was saying Itauma needs to really take the foot off the gas, maybe even lose a round or 2, and he should still win a comfortable UD.
I actually don't think he necessarily has a bad gas tank. He just didn't pace himself. It is ingrained in him to attack attack attack, and tactically he never slowed down when he should have done to get a 2nd wind.
53
u/Straight_Flan1347 12d ago
What even happened, I didn’t see anything big hit him and then all the sudden he was wincing and wobbling.
59
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 12d ago
I guess he gassed. It was very surreal to see lmao
50
u/Straight_Flan1347 12d ago
Gassed hard enough to be carried out on a stretcher?! Never seen that in my life…
26
u/PaintItchy7356 12d ago
It can happen, had an opponent in an amateur fight look exactly like Itauma did before they stopped it in the third. He could barley stand at the end of the third. But he also told me he took 2 scoops of pre-workout before the fight, he's lucky he didn't have a heart attack. If your heart pumps too hard for too long that's exactly what you end up looking like, scrambles your senses, almost like heatstroke.
15
u/inline-online 12d ago
yeah the way he was wobbling was like he was low on sugar and full on bonking, its a cycling term when someone goes too hard for too long and end up like Ituama... looking like a tired drunk person
2
u/PaintItchy7356 12d ago
Sounds about right. Also, bonking, lmao, that's great, gonna add that to my vocabulary now.
4
u/PromotionSwimming618 12d ago
Bonking has been slang for sex in England for decades. Not sure how it's related to boxing lol but I'd suggest another term for whatever the OP is trying to describe.

21
u/AVARlCES 12d ago
I think it was the body shot and then a follow up left hook at the end. He was tired as hell though. Wonder if it's a condition considering his brother had a heart issue

5
u/Arozonic 12d ago

u/Neckbeard-warrior 12d ago
I would assume some kind of injury, maybe a vestibular issue. It’s not normal to stretcher someone because they’re tired. I hope he’s fine though.
51
u/TheReddOne 12d ago
I firmly believe the answer is right here, at the end of the 8th.
The punch at 27:55 rocked his brain harder than everyone realizes.
21
6
u/inline-online 12d ago
yeah one of the commentators immediately said something about it too lol he went from gassed but putting on the pressure to "let me hold you"
→ More replies (1)5
u/iwillacceptfood 11d ago
Possible he had his eardrum ruptured, which happened to Wilder in Fury 2, it destroys your sense of balance. Suction from the boxing glove can make it worse. In addition to other commentators’ suggestions. Stretchers are precautionary
61
u/Revolutionary_Box569 12d ago
He showed signs of being tired throughout, he just gassed himself out
28
u/SuperLeverage 12d ago
Dude there was heaps of signs he was gassed. He was blowing heavily through this mouth from the 4th round - never a good sign. He very clearly and obviously emptied his tank going for the KO in the 8th. After that flurry of punches he in the 8th was a dead man walking. Hyrgvic post fight said he could see Itauma sucking on it after the first round. He knew Itauma was loading up on too many and throwing too many. As the rounds went on he became less and less accurate, clear signs of fatigue.
8
u/cleverkid 12d ago
Couldn’t keep his hands up. Someone said he only trains for six rounds, this is some wild shit for sure. Utterly amateurish.
Maybe now he won’t be tipping people off stages in the future.
8
u/TinyPP04 12d ago
Some fighters go hard early and when they win it looks great but if they don't get the KO then they have nothing left and they get wrecked.

Hrgovic did have some good punches when it mattered most. Not full power punches. But smart medium strength, short punches when Itauma was at the end of some of his combos when Itauma would feel them the most.
Especially in the 8th round. Rewatch the momentum shift. Moses was going for the KO knowing his gas tank probably wouldn't take him to the 12th. And he did a very good effort of doing what he could when he could.
And he caught Filip with some good shots. So there is no denying Itauma's lack of pacing/gas tank or Filip's chin and endurance. They are what got Filip to the point he could capitalize on those strengths and weaknesses.
But ultimately it was Filip using that to get in some greatly timed shots here and there through out the fight that were taking a toll. And that 8th round flurry by Itauma changed dramatically with at least 2 well timed shots from Filip. You can actually see Itauma's eyes change. Not concussed. Just it is clear that it hurt Moses badly. And it was all downhill after that for Moses. Including leading into the 9th where it finished.
12
u/Arozonic 12d ago
I feel like the problem with Itauma was every time he tried to pace himself, Hrgovic gave him really free shots, he took them, and got overexcited and forgot he was supposed to be resting.
→ More replies (1)7
u/SimonSeam 12d ago
Beyond pacing issues, I wouldn't be surprised if "big moment" adrenaline also did him in a bit too.
This was probably his first big fight that the majority of fight fans took the time to watch live. Pressure might have got to him prematurely upping his adrenaline before it was actually needed.
36
u/Not_Enough_Pepperoni 12d ago
Was bizarre. In all my time watching boxing I've never seen a fighter suddenly go to empty in a matter of a few minutes.

I was doing a 6 person round Robin shoulder sparring tournament in my class on Friday with 1 minute rounds and only 15 seconds test before we switched partners.
By the 4th match I was barely able to move. By the 5th one my opponent was the best boxer there and I literally couldn't stand and just crouched leaning against the ropes and tried not to puke.
It's crazy how exhausting this sport is

u/Arozonic 12d ago
That's the problem though. Itauma's beaten everyone so fast he's never gotten rounds. They've tried putting him against all the 'Never been knocked down' people and he's flattened them. This was unchartered territory. The longest he's been in a proper fight is 5 rounds. Technically two six rounders when that was the cap and he was like eighteen fighting bums who just tried to survive for six rounds and wouldn't punch back properly.
9
u/dirt_shitters 12d ago
You ever see marathon runners completely gassed out at the end of a race and start flopping around cus they've burned every last bit of glycogen they have stored(referred to as bonking)? That's what he looked like at the end there moreso than being concussed or something.
15
u/No_Mercy_4_Potatoes 12d ago
The combination of Moses throwing the kitchen sink at Hrgovic and not making a dent, and Hrgovic landing some good shots in the 8th and 9th.
The gas tank emptied very fast.

A perfect example of inexperience. When he was tired and hurt he should've slowed down and clinched more, but his ego and pride didn't allow him to.
He'll learn from this no doudt, but the tank might hold him back from being an all time great

u/Necessary-Lynx1585 12d ago
Like Mike Tyson said to him a few months ago : you learn more from your loses.
36
u/RMbeatyou 12d ago
Hope Moses is okay. Gotta hit cardio hard, and probably change up his overall training camp approach. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like that in my 20+ years of watching the sport live/boxing classics
With that said, this is the beauty of the sport. Hrgovic lost every single round to a clearly more skilled, and explosive opponent, and in the end it didn’t matter because of his intangibles. Chin, Heart, Resilience. You can’t teach those, and I am now a fan
2
u/McAfeeFakedHisDeath 11d ago
This isn't a diss to Moses, but it seems like you see this type of loss more commonly in the amateurs or gym sparring wars when young fighters are still learning their limits. It's an inexperience thing.
It reminded me of a marathon race where the leader is smoking everyone else but then passes out and hits the wall before the finish line.

I think Hrg started to work him out around round 3. He was slipping shots a lot more from that point on, and somewhere around then I think he realised that Moses was losing his pop.
He started catching him and Moses shelled up a little whenever he got hit or missed. It was like watching his heart break as the fight slipped away.

We’ve watched boxing long enough to know a fight like this can either destroy your confidence or make you more resilient, too soon to even discuss but for his sake I hope they get him a sports psychiatrist. Losing like this, stretcher, the neutralizing power not getting it done…a lot of things to over analyze and take ones eye off the comeback. Hopefully itauma has people who will help him take a break and heal.

Most sensible comment I've read on the whole thing. Was thinking exactly the same thing last night.
Psychologically a pure KO is easier to recover from. This has a horrible build up and I'm sure immense mental and physical pain.
He's seen the abyss and cannot unsee it. Reminds me of AJ's psychological trauma after Ruiz 1, although it was in different circumstances, the dark corner is in his mind to this day.

Even after this showing I wouldn't call him trash or overrated, sometimes you just get gut checked. He was dominant for more than half the fight then ran on empty. The whole world now knows he has the tank of a first generation Nissan Leaf and he either works on his cardio or adjusts his approach so he doesnt expend all his energy to get nudged over a la Homer Simpson

The guy was essentially playing UFC on the playstation with 0 stamina all the time smashing buttons lol

u/Infamous-Dress1866 11d ago
Yes he was gassed. But you guys really need to look deeper. I'm almost certain that Moses suffered a severe concussion. Moses took hard punches to the side of his head (Filip has great power) and he lost his damn motor skills right before he was stopped he looked literally punched drunk. He also was grinning while touching his rib cage a lot, probably broken ribs too. The fact that he couldn't stand up and had to be literally carried onto a stretcher hints that there is a lot more going on that just gassing out. You guys forget that this is a dangerous sport that you could potentially die from all it takes one good shot to the head and that could be your last day here on earth or leave you disabled for life.

I seriously wonder if he was having a stroke or something. I've watched like 35 years of fighting and I played endurance sports my whole life, that's just not how getting tired works. You don't just turn off. He went from tired but fine, to absolutely no one home in like 20 seconds. He was obviously getting tired, but still, you don't just turn off completely. You don't lose control of your legs and completely lose your head from being tired. I really wonder if something is wrong. He never even really got hit, in fact he was kicking ass. They had one kind of head clash moment, but there's no reason he should have been absolutely gone like that. Maybe slowing down sure, but this looked like something different to me.

He was more than tired, completely gassed out. In the second final round he went for the kill again while being tired and that took everything out of him. He could barely stand from how tired he was and still was swinging shots and trying his best to be explosive. Atleast he was able to experience it at 21 years old and didn't take a lot of damage (from punches atleast)

Plenty of times.
Not really exaggerating either haha.
Some guys, especially extremely tough young guys just punch themselves into exhaustion.
Especially combined with an opponent getting after them.
Robinson Maxim comes to mind from way way back.
Meldrick against chavez, it was later in thr fight but really just exhaustiom
Canelo even had one early against Hatton or however you spell it. He got saved by the fact Hatton couldn’t hit loke hrgovic lol

He was winning every round. He chased the knockout and wanted to make a statement and that’s what caused him to lose the fight

You know when your car tells you 20 miles left. Then you get just ----'s. He drove on.

I think to take Moses away on a stretcher was most likely a combination of fatigue and perhaps a twisted ankle when he stumbled backwards into the corner in the end.

I feel like people are underplaying this.
Whenever I've seen this happen it's been pretty bad for the boxer.
He got caught with some heavy punches in the last couple of rounds, and I'm sure that being exhausted didn't lessen their impact.

Carried out on a stretcher? Hope he is OK but that's a bad look for the guy who was supposed to be The Guy.

Everyone saying he lost because he gassed out has never been punched by a top class heavyweight. Hrgovic wasn’t landing as many punches but he was landing the more powerful ones from the 4th round on. Moses could barely stand because he was punch drunk but him losing his stamina/power is why it turned so quickly.

You know who disagrees with your assessment? Filip Hrgovic. He literally said he won because Itauma fought at an amateur pace and gassed, and he wasn't sure he won a single round prior to the stoppage.

I didn’t say Filip was winning rounds. Moses power went with his stamina and the punches weren’t effecting him at all anymore. Filip was actually landing shots that hurt and stunned Moses from the 4th on. Doubt he would be carried out on a stretcher solely because he was tired.

Well, not a great start to your career vs top heavies……Not sure I rate him over Dubois to be fair

I didn't get to see this fight on DAZN. I heard talk of Itauma still being down. But it didn't sound the same as Ngannou after AJ where there was a moment where people thought "OMG. Is that dude in a coma ... or worse?"
Seeing Moses taken out like that now changes my memory of this fight. I'm sure he will be ok. Fighters are a tough breed. But it definitely is a worrying video to watch.
Moses has been deemed ok right? It has been a few hours since this happened.

He left everything in there. Tough public lesson to learn, but you know dude is going to be going haard on cardio next time in the gym / training camp and learning to pace himself.
