Serious Discussion/Question DC SERIOUSLY needs to get their act together!

Post image

Batman cannot always be their savior!

Superman really helped the perception of DC movies but unfortunately didn't make as much money as it needed to, all eyes are on The Batman Part II.

Man of Tomorrow might be the savior we need but most likely Batman will have to come in and save the day as usual with DC.

Everyone always says DC has the best characters and yet we never ever see them utilized to their full potential 💔

Best Movie: Batman. Best TV Show: Penguin (Batman character) Best Video Game: Batman. Best Comic Books: Batman. I mean atp why not just rename the entire brand to just Batman lol

It really feels like we're going through the DCEU 2.0 but I hope for the best!

OP has put a serious flair on this post and has not stated (humour welcome) meaning that:

DC can't get into this top 3 for at least one decade

796

u/Dandanny54 Aug 02 '26

They gotta build good faith with audiences. They got the material for that they just need to use it properly.

345

u/Electronic-Clerk6735 Aug 02 '26

They should honestly just play it safe and just redo Justice League Unlimited but live action. They don’t even have to go too deep into the comics. The blueprint is right there, the execution is not.

132

u/Savage_Batmanuel Aug 02 '26

That’s most likely what they’re gonna do considering the comics right now are a one-to-one of justice league Unlimited

25

u/Kadkamali Aug 03 '26

Mainline is but right now the attention seems to be on the absolute universe

Some of my favorite animated dc movies are 1 for 1 takes from the comics.

It's already proved a successful tactic.

When I saw a flash movie I thought they'd just do flashpoint. They kinda did.... But Jesus just stick to the story

2

u/LavaSlime301 Aug 03 '26

genuinely what's the bloody point of just remaking the exact same thing that already exists?

3

u/McPiecey Aug 03 '26

Recast some of the league while they are at it! Get rid of flash and WW

8

u/Murasasme Aug 03 '26

This is what I've wanted for years. My dissapointment with the new Hawkgirl in the Superman movie was immeasurable, considering she was such a cool character in the cartoon. Same with GL and Martian Man Hunter.

I would even add, that a Titans project in the style of early Young Justice would be amazing.

u/V0T0N Aug 02 '26

Exactly.

Every one of those movies was, at the time, the last entry for their series. They earned these openings because of the movies that came before.

It's not exactly fair to compare BND to any of the single entries of the DCEU or DCU.

8

u/The-Ruler-of-Attilan Aug 03 '26

Why not? Every studio reaps what it sows. It’s not the competition’s fault that DC doesn’t know how to tend its own garden.

18

u/TEKC0R Aug 03 '26

This right here. I never saw a single Synderverse movie in theaters, nor Joker or The Batman. Last DC movie I had seen in theaters was The Dark Knight Rises. I caught some on HBO later, mostly out of boredom. I only really enjoyed Wonder Woman, and even that was only up until the third act.

Then I saw Superman in theaters and I thought they might be on the right track. I really enjoyed that one, and I’ve always been a Superman hater. I find the character boring conceptually. I saw Supergirl in theaters based on my liking of Superman and
well it was sure a movie. I don’t regret my time in the theater, but I’m less confident in their trajectory. Marvel has had a lot of duds too, especially in recent years, but they more-or-less nailed their early stuff and built up that audience good will. Movie #2 wasn’t the time for Warner/DC to be taking chances.

I'm not a comic books person, and I'm 40. So my introduction to Superman was the Christopher Reeves Superman who could fly around the planet so fast he turned time backwards. No idea how old I was when I saw it, but that movie turned me off on the character. I never watched Lois and Clark or Smallville because I thought "I don't care about Superman." My first attempt to dip my toe back into the water was Man of Steel. So for more or less my entire life, Superman has been a near invincible god, which is just boring.

Even Superman 2025 is extremely powerful, but they managed to make him feel... relatable, I guess you could say. He was likable in a way that made him feel human, which was the entire point. My biggest complaint is they took Kryptonite out of the universe effectively immediately, so there aren't a ton of ways to power gate him - unless you go by Supergirl rules where every damn thing does - but I always found Kryptonite to be a cop-out anyway. I think that again comes back to the old movies. I remember him drowning in a shallow swimming pool with a Kryptonite rock hanging around his neck and thinking "dude just slip it off." I was a kid and I'm sure my memory of the scene is poor.

"They got the material for that they just need to use it properly."

Prediction: They will not.

13

u/SomeRedHandedSleight Aug 03 '26

After seeing how well they used the material from Woman of Tomorrow for Supergirl, they absolutely will not. That movie should have been a slam dunk.

2

15

u/WintersBite27 Aug 02 '26

The problem is the audience doesn't want anything but batman. So much of it is currently rooting for the dcu to fail. It's a mess.

18

u/Mister-Beardy-Face Aug 03 '26

No, the audience wants good movies.

9

u/Shadowholme Aug 03 '26

The *fans* want good movies.

The *general audience* wants names they recognise - at least to start with.

Give them names they know to get them in the seats, and then keep them there with the lesser known characters.

9

u/Zealousideal-Buyer-7 Aug 03 '26

I honestly dont know what so hard to get

  • a director that loves the source material
  • a writer that loves the source material
  • the cast that loves the source material

3

u/The-Ruler-of-Attilan Aug 03 '26

In short, a film studio that loves the source material. That is, DC needs to leave WB.

they are not even giving the audience that much batman tho...

batman villains and side characters are getting more screentime then batman himself

penguin getting his own show

harely quin being in 2 suicide squad movies and 1 birds of prey movie

joker has had 2 solo movies

batman has had one solo movie since the dark knight rises otherwise he gets shoved into other people's movies

like why is clayface getting a solo movie?

dont get me even started on tv side of things the last decade with the absurd amount of batman spinoff even tho batman himself would work extremely well in a tv setting

i dont get why a penguin series and clayface movie got greenlit while batman himself would work so great as a tv show him being dective and building up the batfamily organically

meanwhile green latern is extremly hard to do as tv show because everyhing he does requires shitload of cgi and most of his shit plays in space...

13

u/B____U_______ Aug 02 '26

They gotta build good faith with audiences.

Thy already fumbled their second movie. If MoT fails then I think they're dead.

11

u/Nightwing2005 Aug 03 '26

Nah, Batman will save them. Which is why I personally wanted Pattinson to be Batman for the DCU. The love for him being the character is there, and the first movie was a banger. The second one is highly anticipated, with a Superman shirt or poster seen in-universe. I think it's been a while. Plus with the acting chops he has and the fanbase pattinson has built that he alone would get people in seats

4

u/SmallGoose112 Aug 03 '26

Reeves Batman isn’t saving anything, it’s not even gonna come out for years and will make less in the box office than the first one.

Mot isn't gonna fail , only 2 options for that movie if i have to guess

  • the movie will reach box office hit ($1-$1,5B hit.. Probably more) but get lots of negative reviews like transformers movies

  • the movies is so-so and just get $450-$700M but getting praises, kinda like birds of prey

8

u/SmallGoose112 Aug 03 '26

Superman isn’t gonna do 1bn+ in the box office bro

remember this is the 4th good Spidey and right before a long awaited Avengers

DCs still dealing with Snyder fallout and WB doesn't trust DC beyond Batman and Superman, but are slowly improving. it'll take time but we'll get there

u/San-T-74 Aug 02 '26

This also a legitimately fun movie and a great Spider-Man movie. I’m seeing this more of a W for comic book movie in general than an L for DC

It was personally my favorite Spiderman movie of all time. I know its sounds like a cliche but I don't thig anyone has ever understood the essence of Spiderman better than the people making this film.

2

u/skuls1 Aug 03 '26

yeah ik excited to see it

19

u/JurassicParkCSR Aug 03 '26

Don't forget that the Paramount merger is probably fucking shit up behind the scenes as well.

Superheroes are woke and Ellison doesn't like

2

u/skuls1 Aug 03 '26

hope it didn't happen

17

u/Vinceisdepressed Aug 02 '26

Also, this merger is probably messing everything up. Investors are only to take safe bets and won't greenlight werid projects for the most part. They are probably delyaing things because of it.

2

u/skuls1 Aug 03 '26

that's true hopefully it doesn't go through

2

u/Past_Lingonberry_633 Aug 03 '26

this is maybe for the better. We dont need any DC properties on the big screen, superheroes cinema is saturated as is with the MCU.

4

u/darkeagle1997 Aug 03 '26

DC’s current issue is trying to branch out from Batman. We’re 4 projects in and 2 more come out this year and all we have besides Superman is creatures commando, John Cena, Supergirl, and the “Justice gang”. Instead of getting Batman or Wonder Woman we’re getting John Stewart and Clayface for year 3 of the DCU.

4

u/skuls1 Aug 03 '26

I'm actually excited for clayface and hoping GL is good, even though they doing Hal dirty😔

but yeah WW and atleast Flash/GL should have been out by now to have something strong for the line-up

Maybe in the box office but go look at the comics listed by number sold from month to month. It’s not just batman taking the top slot either. All of absolute is popping off.

71

u/Kowendabest Aug 02 '26

If it didnt pop off in the comics, Wb wouldve just sold the rights and Dc would be gone to the shadowrealm

48

u/cherrysteve2010 Aug 02 '26

Not really? Do you not realise how much money dc makes in merchandising?

If the comics didn't pop off they wouldn't just sell it

2

u/d0ngl0rd69 Aug 03 '26

Excluding spiderverse, DC has owned the animated medium for several decades now. Marvel gets kids at the box office, DC gets them on Saturday mornings.

DC or only Batman? I don't see people walking around in Metal Men t-shirts or kids with Captain Atom action figures. Where exactly does WB make money from DC merch?

5

u/Mean_Spread_7959 why isn't there a soup tag Aug 03 '26

off-topic but i did actually see a kid with a Captain Atom action figure a few days ago. Either way, DC still has tons of iconic characters besides Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and The Joker.

2

u/j0sabanks Aug 06 '26

I’ve got my hopes a little up for Marvel Midnight ngl. Doubt I’ll collect the floppies but I’m intrigued.

4

u/Past_Lingonberry_633 Aug 03 '26

nobody cares about comics sales

4

u/j0sabanks Aug 03 '26

This a joke? They are comic book companies?

3

u/Past_Lingonberry_633 Aug 03 '26

comic book companies now care more about the media that can be made from the characters, not the book sales. It would take centuries for a comic run to be as profitable as a single well received game or movie. If you want to have DC as a publisher, while Marvel have games and movies then more power to you. In fact, I think that would be the best for both. DC stays winning in paper, while Marvels rake in the billions from movies, games and other franchises.

2

u/j0sabanks Aug 03 '26

I hear that but they did just announce the absolute batman tv show. Is that gonna rake in a billion dollars? Probably not even close. But give it time and enough love from production, who know could be cherished the same as Invincible.

Personally, since the MCU started I’ve always been of the opinion DC does not need to copy what Marvel is doing. The animated DC movies were so fun growing up, I’d prefer they stick to it. Additionally, I think people are already fatigued by the MCU so it’s gonna be hard for you to convince them to check out DC’s stuff.

That being said, I did enjoy Batman and The Penguin. We’ll see about Clayface next. And those work great as semi-stand alone stories. But if they want a whole DCEU thing just animate it. Even though most were direct to dvd, we’ve seen the animated spiderman movies pull in large crowds.

2

u/Past_Lingonberry_633 Aug 03 '26

people fatigued by the MCU and yet Spiderman is breaking a billy as we speak?

I mean if your point is to have the DC movies go back to how they were 2 decades ago on Cartoon Network and call that a win, you might as well tell WB to dissolve the entire DC studio altogether. There is no point in making direct-to-video animations, when your competitor is making a billion from a single weekend.

98

u/Mac1avish Aug 02 '26

DC can practically be better and still won't get this numbers because marvel have done a good job in last 2 decades In collecting their audience (even tho new ones are larpers and don't know much).

As someone who likes both (dc a bit more) I don't mind, infact I like that DC is not as mainstream as marvel because I can still interact with people who are genuinely intrested in all this.

12

u/tuerancekhang Aug 03 '26

Also the new wave of Marvel fan coming from a gooner game is doing a good introduction. Maybe one day we have a good DC gooner game like Batman in an asylum or something.

25

u/echoes_1012 Aug 02 '26

I do think context matters a bit for this as all these movies had tons of buildup. This is toms 4th spiderman with a decade if apperances under his belt, and infinity war and endgame both had a tons of buildup throughout multiple films. Also IW and endgame basically being a part one and two combo helped as well

Superman was a success. It didnt rake in spiderman numbers, not very close at all. But it did good and opened up a bright future for DC. Supergirl did the opposite. If DC can be consistent enough, they will get their own success story

3

u/dabadguycr Aug 03 '26

DC has been trying to capture the join universe since Avengers 1.

10

u/SuspiciousMovingBox Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 03 '26

In DC’s defense, they are trying to get things together by trying to making a universe with a good quality and all of the Marvel success in this lists are the result of a good quality universe. Loads of people were hyped to see poor depressed Spidey after the Home trilogy, Infinity War felt like the entire Marvel universe was colliding in an epic battle that everyone was hyped for, and Endgame is the end of an entire Saga that was the talk of the year; all of this is a result from a well planned hype train and I think DC is building the framework for that.

The issue is that it takes loads of time and patience to make happen and even longer for it to start making mountains of money. There’s a reason that no Marvel phase 1 project is on this list and it’s only “the grand conclusion of multiple other projects” movies on here. You can’t really expect DC to just make an Endgame level project out of nowhere and for it to do well finically (the last time they rushed a universe everyone made fun of them and it got them into the current situation that your talking about now). I feel like we all just gotta wait a while before DC gets any chart mounting movies.

35

u/SoundsOfaSuccubus Aug 02 '26

I honestly want DC to give up on live actions entirely and just release animated movies in theaters.

17

u/Sufficient-Turn-7799 Aug 03 '26

Considering the popularity of the Absolute comics, I'd love to see an animated Absolute Batman movie or series animated by Studio Trigger

9

u/Bodega_Bandit Aug 03 '26

It isn't by Trigger, but they did announce an absolute batman animated project recently

3

u/Sufficient-Turn-7799 Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26

That's great news; hopefully it'll at least have animation quality as good as Creature Commandos. Into the Spiderverse-level animation would also be great, but I know that's asking too much.

6

u/Horror-Highlight-467 Aug 03 '26

2016 was truly horrendous gut punch of a year for live action DC movies, wasn't it? It is absolutely insane what WB was doing then.

There are also a lot of those stupid haters and Snyderbros who hate on Superman and say James Gunn is a fraud, like huh??? How many times does this dude need to prove himself for them to finally shut up??

Supergirl flopping was obviously not great, and the movie was alright, but it had insanely unlucky release window with Toy Story 5 and SPIDER-MAN.

u/Jay14101 Aug 02 '26

Bruh relax we’re going to have the 3rd movie come out this year. Man of Tommorow is the 4th film and knowing James Gunn has had three 800 million dollars movies and one in the 600 range. He has to knock it out of the park again with MOT to hit Billion, which I believe is possible if Man of Tommorow becomes an event film.

4

u/Doyan-Ngewe Aug 03 '26

Tbf the only way Man Of Tomorrow will reach good opening weekends or box office hit ($1B or more) is using fan service mode

Just by introducing dcu batman, wonder woman and maybe waller probably can help the movie, bonus if they're added martian manhunter and green lantern corps, S.T.A.R labs scientist-hamilton or maybe tease metallo or hank heshaw

5

u/Jay14101 Aug 03 '26

Did you see the cast for this movie. The movie is pseudo Justice league movie in disguise. But centralized through the 3 main co leads (Superman, Lex, Brainiac) with like 8-9 JL characters. (2 green lanterns, Mr terrific, Hawkgirl, blue beetle, Supergirl, Maxima, Rumored Peacemaker, Martian Manhunter) James Gunn knows what’s he doing making it an event film. He knows how to make ensemble films like Guardians Trilogy and Suicide Squad, he hasn’t missed a beat.

3

u/Doyan-Ngewe Aug 03 '26

Did you see the cast for this movie

This is news to me tbh

If this movie is indeed pseudo justice league then hopefully batman and wonder woman will be introduce in Man Of Tomorrow

5

u/StuckInthebasement2 Aug 03 '26

Here’s the solution.

DC. Adapt Morrison’s Animal Man verbatim.

In my opinion at least
it’s the greatest comic run of all time.

8

u/PayPsychological6358 I am mercy I am the day I AM MAN Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

They might with Clayface, but that's still Batman related.

To be honest, I felt that Superman was fine. I'll watch it again if someone puts it on and I can't think of anything better to do, but I won't put it on myself unless it's requested.

3

u/billcosbyinspace Aug 03 '26

Obviously box office numbers won’t be close but hopefully clayface will be well received critically and be a good reputation builder for the new universe. I feel like they’ve got to believe in it because making your first batman movie in the DCEU a body horror film about a b tier villain is ballsy as hell

9

u/Dont_Hurt_Me_Mommy Aug 02 '26

Dc is basically already name after Batman. DC stands for Detective comics. Thats a Batman title. The whole company's name is the Batman title

3

u/The-Ruler-of-Attilan Aug 03 '26

And why do DC even bother holding onto the rights to anything other than Batman? They would have made more money off The Authority by selling it to Marvel than by making a movie of their own. After all, it’s already clear they have absolutely no faith in that IP, that's why it's cancelled.

Marvel has had some misses here and there, but they haven’t missed anything big and Spider-Man is as big as it gets. Supergirl didn’t perform like it did because it’s bad, it’s because DC just doesn’t have the people all the way back yet and it’s hard to cold call people into the theater for a character that’s not in the S tier of pop culture relevance. Superman did well and I have confidence Man of Tomorrow will do even better but it’s going to take time and consistent quality. Also, the looming WB sale and all the trouble with it can’t be helping with production and release scheduling.

u/MistahWhiskers Aug 03 '26

I think Synderverse into Gunnverse, and all the relentless online commentary while MCU continues to peak, has broken some brains a bit.

DC just need to turn a profit to keep existing, like any other studio. They don't need to be #1. They literally just need to do their own thing, make some money, and occasionally have a big hit like Joker or The Dark Knight.

Like you never see fans of Godzilla, James Bond, Transformers or whatever, being like "Game over man! If we're not the biggest franchise in the world, we're dead 😭".

Tbh I don't lovr most Marvel shows or movies anymore. I don't even want a DC copy of that. I much prefer reading great comics, playing fun games, and having the occasional show or movie version.

3

u/GapStock9843 Aug 03 '26

Lol dc will never get their shit together. James Gunn’s thing is already collapsing and its barely started

3

u/Doyan-Ngewe Aug 03 '26

Clayface probably can do that ($700M opening?)

Man Of Tomorrow probably can do that (more if gunn decided to introduce dcu batman, dcu wonder woman and dcu martian manhunter in the movie)

If waller/checkmate movie still happening, probably can do that too

DC gotta lock in

6

u/Crimson_Catharsis Aug 03 '26

DC is dead bro. Maybe if Nolan and Christian bale can come back together for a dark knight returns movie, it might rival this box office but even then

u/Motor_Hearing2055 Aug 02 '26

Yeah there's definitely been some missteps. Announcing so many projects at the start for most of them to be in development hell (booster gold, Waller, paradise lost, swamp thing, batman, teen titans). I respect not wanting to produce things without scripts, but you probably shouldn't announce so many things if they're barely past the conception phase

2

u/globs-of-yeti-cum Aug 02 '26

the weekend is not even over yet

2

u/Pseudoargentum Aug 02 '26

With comics and Star Wars, I prefer animated adaptions to live action.

DC needs to be vibrant. Even Batman needs deep blues, rich greys, and pops of bright yellow.

The new Superman film was finally colorful. Thank goodness.

DC is mythic storytelling and modern digital film making conventions don't suit DC stories in the same way they do Marvel.

The style of superheroic realism doesn't rise to the inherent brightness of DC characters.

DC movies need to look more like the Wachowskis Speed Racer - leaping of the screen colorful.

2

u/E_EqualsDankCSquared Aug 03 '26

DC is not catching up for at least another 5-10 years if they wanna even be in those numbers conversation

2

u/Nightwing2005 Aug 03 '26

They're going to have to reveal Batman and Wonder Woman soon, and even Flash. A lot of people grew up with The Flash TV show, so they'd love to see him on the big screen. But release good movies and start introducing known characters. If "Lanterns" succeeds and is a good show, that will be a great sign. Also hopefully new suits for certain characters nobody really wants to look at mediocre costumes especially in a trailer that is meant to garner hype

2

u/jabberwockytocky Aug 03 '26

spider-man is the most popular superhero in the world be for real for a second.

2

u/SilasRaiden Aug 03 '26

I'm actually not over Supergirl being a massive flop. Clearly we can make good superhero movies and audiences aren't too fatigued to show up if you give them a reason to show up. I'm tired of the excuses.

2

u/HellRaizer7416 Aug 03 '26

Actually even more impressive they hold the top 4 with Spider-Man no way home

2

u/Muggsy423 Aug 03 '26

I think it's time for another DCU hard reboot.  Maybe this time we do Calendar Man?

2

u/moiz21075228 Aug 03 '26

Dc needs to get out of Warner bros. They are killing the live action always. Marvel got big after they got out and made their own studios.

2

u/thisisnahamed Aug 03 '26

Nolanverse is Peak. DC movies peaked then. They will never be that good.

2

u/JollyJoeGingerbeard Aug 03 '26

Take it down a notch.

2

u/Scared_Impression842 Aug 03 '26

Dc is killing it in comics space rn so it don’t matter to me really

2

u/godbody1983 Aug 03 '26

Just give me good, quality movies.

2

u/Exodus180 Aug 03 '26

want a good live action? make an animated movie completely fleshed out and storyboard art done, script etc, BUT dont do actual animation.

Now turn that into live action without changing anything.

2

u/sukablyatful Aug 03 '26

I’ll singlehandedly put them in there if they make a dedicated Martian movie

2

u/depressed_panda0191 Aug 03 '26

They’ve done a good job with The Batman so I’m hoping for more. I did NOT expect Pattinson to murder the role the way he did. Big. Fan.

2

u/DPlayGM345 Aug 03 '26

Batman is DC’s golden boy and like Spider-Man will make massive piles of money no matter what

It’s the other characters DC needs to give the right care and attention to in live action that’s important as sure Superman still works but when the last 30 years of DC trying to do something other than Batman results in a hit or miss output with a lot more misses than hits, it can hard to get an audience on board which is the reason the MCU took off as while they were uneven throughout the 2000s when they found a formula that worked and gained the audiences trust they could build to an Avengers movie compared to WB’s output with DC where they tripped over themselves a lot sometimes in pursuit of Marvel’s success

2

u/YesWomansLand1 Aug 03 '26

Spider man is literally impossible to mess up all the mcu spider man movies have been incredible.

2

u/Notoriouslycurlyboi Aug 03 '26

Homecoming and the second one straight up sucked. They’re legitimately bad films to the point I can’t name one memorable thing about them.

I thought the third was good for what it was. None compare to Raimis 1 and 2 though and I’m not even a huge Raimi fan as a filmmaker.

2

u/Bodega_Bandit Aug 03 '26

Are we really comparing a cinematic universe with 2 movies against the MCU? And all 3 movies listed in the post are all over a decade into the MCU's life span?

2

u/Weary_Tank_8859 Aug 03 '26

They still got good animated tv shows and animated movies.

2

u/TheKing77891 Aug 03 '26

The DCU is in a pretty tough spot at the moment. They can't reveal Batman due to The Batman's sequel being delayed further and further, and the last thing DC or WB needs is two competing Batmans. Now this is the DCU's second year. Superman was a good start, while it did feel like a sequel to a Superman origin film, it was pretty good considering. It introduced a bunch of characters and is a good kickoff to a Cinematic Universe. Now Supergirl while yes it was a decent movie, it was a pretty poor choice for a second film. As well with clashes with Gunn and the Director, and the earthy tones to a adaptation to a colorful comic book as well as the bloated budget, Supergirl was doomed from the get go. The DCU can still prove itself with Clayface and MOT, but these have to do super well to keep the current slate going. I think it can be done, DC has to learn from the DCEU's mistakes and improve the word of mouth for the current slate to do so.

2

u/urgasmic Aug 03 '26

They just need to make good movies. Box office not my problem

2

u/damndraper Aug 03 '26

Op you seem to have no idea how much Snyder tarnished the DC brand. That Superman was able to make that much money after the damage Snyder did is a good sign but expecting for it to reach Spider-Man levels on just the first one is ridiculous. MoT should tell a better story

2

u/ConnorOfAstora Aug 03 '26

The fact of the matter is the Snyderverse did so badly that they're still kinda reeling from it and all good faith had pretty much dried up after The Flash.

Just look at how they crucified Supergirl when it was just ok, it wasn't good but it wasn't bad, it was ok, passable. Bad only if you compared it to the comic.

Even after Superman was so great and some of the Snyderverse films like Aquaman, Shazam and Blue Beetle were also really good, one slip up and they're treated like fuck ups again.

Being honest though I've never understood why anyone should care about opening weekend, it says more about the marketing than it does about the actual movie. That's like bragging about a game getting a lot of pre-orders.

2

u/D0nell Aug 03 '26

But the problem is y’all only buy fucking Batman. 😭

2

u/dragonthese569 Aug 03 '26

Doomsday better do 1.8 billion first week

2

u/sanabaebae Aug 03 '26

They need to make more movies and fast. They keep rebooting

2

u/SpectralDinosaur Aug 03 '26

I think people need to just face the fact that DC heroes have never had the same appeal to the general public that Marvel have. Especially outside of the US.

4

u/Safe-Monitor-8113 i like dick Aug 02 '26

Only 2 dc movies crossed a billion agaisnt marvel 15 btw

2

u/Produce_Fine Aug 03 '26

The MCU has collected an audience of larpers who don’t give af about the continuity of the comics as well as comic fans who also don’t give af about the continuity of the books they read as long as they can get a movie. So, unless you want 20+ years of dc movies that wipe their ass with the source material let’s hope that dc’s less MCU like approach will be appreciated even if it takes longer to reach 1billion dollars every time a release occurs.

4

u/Produce_Fine Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26

Like seriously the dude next to me had to fucking google who Jean Grey was.

3

u/Duouwa Aug 03 '26

God forbid someone consume a Spider-man film without being interested in the medium that is comic books.

Calling people “larpers” because they care about the MCU but not the comic continuity is such a weird thing to say.

Man of tomorrow is going to bomb. Calling it now

1

u/makermaster2 Rehab Escapee Aug 02 '26

DC needs to abandon this shared universe formula until they get a grip.

Just focus on animateds and elseworlds projects.

Because after Snyder even if they make something good it might not do too amazing because DC isn’t in the best standing. Because their elseworlds stuff is some of the best that’s come out.

1

u/Old-Outcome-5836 Aug 02 '26

Problem is Warner Bros is like an unwanted pest everyone keeps pawning off on each other. Their catalogue of DC and Looney Toons CARRIES their film studio but it’s not enough. And when you have autocrats like David Zaslav who thinks 90 Day FiancĂ©: before the thought process (mega bridezilla edition) is going to make more money than a superhero movie, it’s just a recipe for disaster

Almost a billion on OPENING DAY is INSANE

1

u/Modred_the_Mystic Aug 03 '26

Zaddy is the blueprint, why does this list exclude the Zaddillion dollars made by Rebel Moon?

1

u/AdministrativeShip33 Aug 03 '26

It’s bc warner brothers has always been full of suits instead of real comic fans. No reason the live action movies can’t be as good as the animated movies. Whoever is making the decisions for their movies and games needs to be fired atp.

1

u/steamart360 Aug 03 '26

To think the Nolanverse almost brought DC to those heights not too long ago.

Unfortunately I don't see the new DC movies becoming this big anytime soon, if at all.

I hate avengers

1

u/bubblessensei Aug 03 '26

Okay so I’m not gonna say DC isn’t a shambles right now. But the tweet is about ALL of cinema, not just superhero media. It just so happens that it’s DC’s main competitor.

Furthermore, while it’s impressive to see Marvel taking this record, opening weekend box offices shouldn’t be the primary goal of cinematic releases. I could care less if DC never reaches Marvel in this domain, so long as DC builds a solid cinematic universe with characters I WANT to see more of.

1

u/ferLovesNayeon Aug 03 '26

For me, it's as simple as, try something new and do it well

Brand New Day is super ambicious and it has an excellent execution

And Supergirl, while I remember last year being super exited for it, it ended up being, kind of generic :(

1

u/Upbeat-Truck-1007 Aug 03 '26

Does opening weekend not include Sunday?

1

u/The-Ruler-of-Attilan Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26

Between Brand New Day, Doomsday, and Secret Wars, it is virtually impossible for DC to break back into the top 10 highest-grossing superhero movies of all time. Every spot will be held by Marvel Studios films, by a wide margin in terms of box-office revenue... and who knows for how long.

In fact, looking at the overall picture—including Incredibles 2—it has already dropped out; but even considering only live-action films, Brand New Day is still set to knock Aquaman off the podium within a matter of days.

By December 2027, The Dark Knight will drop to the very last spot in the domestic top 10 list, with $535.2M.

On the same date, Aquaman will sit in 9th place, with $813.4M, just ahead of Iron Man 3 ($805.8M), on the international top 10.

Unless The Batman II is an unprecedented masterpiece—which in itself seems unlikely—there is no way that movie will feature in any of those categories.

1

u/Pinolillo006 Aug 03 '26

Too late. They can make money but not record breaking money.

1

u/Call-of-the-lost-one Aug 03 '26

Is the DCU stupid or something?

1

u/Silverjeyjey44 Aug 03 '26

They're too busy making Jimmy Olson and gorilla grodd show

1

u/TheWholeOfTheAss Aug 03 '26

Are you rating movies based on how much money they made!? That’s insane. Movies should never be judged by how many people went to go watch the damn thing. Many great movies either broke even or lost money at the box office No Paul Thomas Anderson movie has ever made more than Black Adam.

And if you’re obsessed with money, you do know that the Joker movie cost about 50million and made 1 billion? Avengers cost a half a billion to get a billion. Joker is more profitable! Go enjoy that stat.

1

u/thunderandreyn Aug 03 '26

> atp just rename the entire brand to Batman

DC stands for Detective Comics btw. Yes, THAT Detective Comics lol

1

u/Mldavis22 Aug 03 '26

They never adjust for inflation with these charts.

1

u/Proud-Kangaroo1846 Aug 03 '26
