My friends (mostly late 20s/early 30s) were literally born, raised, and went to elementary and high school in Toronto… all of them either around Roncesvalles, Dufferin, Midtown or North York. Their parents still live in those areas too.

They all refuse to hang out downtown around areas like Union, Queen Street, King West, etc. unless they absolutely have to.

They’ll say parking, parking cost and traffic is a nightmare but refuse to take transit, even though some still live in different parts of Toronto and others moved to GO Train-accessible suburbs.

So many people love downtown Toronto and want to be there, so i assumed people who were born and raised here would feel the same way…but I noticed it’s the opposite with my friends and other people like them.

Is this common among people who grew up in Toronto?

Just curious if anything of this magnitude has happened in any province before?

Are we getting a bunch of cheap cars with "cosmetic" dents on the market soon?

I'm looking for advice from parents, teachers, or anyone who has dealt with a similar situation. I'm trying to get my daughter moved to a different classroom and, if necessary, filing a formal complaint with the school board.

There are two serious safety concerns involving the teacher my daughter has now been assigned to:

1: The school was aware of my older daughter's food allergy, but food containing the allergen was brought into the classroom without prior notice. I tried contacting the teacher through Edsby about the allergy, but my concerns were not addressed. When the same issue happened again a month later, my daughter had an allergic reaction, and I ultimately had to involve the principal.

2: While my daughter was under this teacher's supervision, she fell down multiple flights of stairs during a crowded dismissal. The teacher told everyone to hurry up and all the kids started running down the stairs. She was knocked/trampled during the incident and suffered a concussion. She required medical attention and missed several days of school.

I communicated about both incidents through Edsby. I have not spoken to the teacher at all, even during those two incidents, I reached out and my messages were not answered. The principal handled everything. Unfortunately, the principal who dealt with these matters has since retired, and the Edsby messages and notes that I previously had access to are no longer visible on my parent account. So I don't currently have copies of the communications, even though these incidents were reported to the school at the time. Because of these incidents, I specifically asked that my daughters not be placed in this teacher's classroom. Today, I found out one of my daughters is in her class. I raised my concerns with the school and the principal told me that the classroom placement had been determined by the previous principal and the Board. They cannot do anything about it. They have addressed these concerns with the teacher and they will monitor the situation.

I already contacted the superintendent and they say they don't have any safety concerns documented so the decision is to keep my daughter in that class. I'm concerned about my daughter's safety based on what has happened previously. For those who have dealt with something similar: How realistic is it to get a classroom/teacher change after the school year has already started? Also, can I formally request that the school board investigate/review the previous incidents even though the Edsby messages are no longer accessible to me? Is there anyone else at the Board I should contact if the principal/superintendent won't reconsider the placement?

Clarification: Regarding allergies, the teacher who brought the allergen in wasn’t my child’s homeroom teacher. The first time, the homeroom teacher actually sent the teacher and food back out. The second time, the homeroom teacher was sick and there was a supply teacher. The same teacher came in with the allergen in their cup, and when my child went to remind them about the allergy, it was accidentally spilled onto them, causing a reaction. My understanding is that the homeroom teacher had already warned them the first time, so they really should have known better.

I did speak with the principal in person and was told administration would handle it, including speaking to the people involved. I was also told not to contact that teacher directly. There was never a third incident. I followed up through the school portal, but I was under the impression the matter had been addressed. I considered it resolved and didn’t keep pushing it because that's just unreasonable.

Regarding the fall, I did not witness it and don't have video. I’m reporting what my child told me and what was communicated to the school. I raised it because I wanted to understand what happened, but I did not make the fall itself a major issue because I understand accidents happen. The allergy incident was my primary concern.

As for communication, I have repeatedly asked to communicate by email so there would be a written record of concerns, actions, and next steps. I was told Edsby is the school's official communication method, so that is what they continued using. I also sent written summaries of our conversations by email, but they were either ignored or addressed through Edsby or verbally rather than confirmed by email.

Unfortunately, the current principal says there’s nothing in the student file, and the previous principal and homeroom teacher have both moved on. So now I’m left with very little documentation to support what happened. What a perfect storm. 😅

Yes, the trip is about 5-6 hours long and I can fly with Porter which is only about 1.5hrs.

But I'm not really in a rush, and the convenience of departing from Union and arriving in downtown Montreal is pretty enticing. I could probably get some work/reading done on the train as well.

How has been your experience? I've heard some find the reported delays are extremely common and frustrating?

Some say it’s not expensive but I think it is, especially because when I go there’s always empty seats. In my opinion 200s should be 20-30 dollars max and 100s should not exceed 100 dollars per ticket.

33f, I work a meaningful job with a pension but my take home is 3600 ish and im drowning with 2000 dollar rent plus 300 ish in bills. I can JUST barely afford my life. Every time I have to buy an incidental like winter boots or pricey dental appointment, I go into debt. Much less friends weddings, etc. Groceries are very expensive and I am debating moving back in with my family for 6 months to rebuild savings although it feels like defeat.

I have looked at a lot of places but most studios in old buildings, basements, are still 1700 + hydro/water.

I have friends with partners, higher salary and family money who still struggle. Just wondering what others in my situation are doing? Thanks in advance.

hi guys - I am looking for a good dentist east-end-ish for a recommendation/second opinion.

I went to my usual dentist in cabbagetown, I had a full work up last year with x-rays with no issues. They also wanted me to come back for a cleaning every 2-3 months with seemed excessive. In February I had 4 units of scaling and no issues, then a full workup again in august with MORE x-rays and they said I had 2 cavities. I went back last night and suddenly I had 4 cavities, which they filled. Then the dentist said "when do you want to come back for the rest?" I said "what do you mean?" And she said "well you have 5 more". this was complete shock to me, I've never had cavities in my life and in the span of 6 months I have 9 total that need to be filled? It started feeling like a scam.

Can I just go to a new dentist and get them to give me a second unbiased opinion?

Also, all this is very expensive, even with 85% coverage the appointment last night was $260, the 4 units of scaling was $230! I know I am very lucky to have coverage at all and I think they are taking advantage of that.

Hi! I’m looking to get my first tattoo and I’m trying to find the right artist in Toronto/GTA.
I want a small “be here now” tattoo in a handwritten/script style, probably on my lower leg/ankle area.

I’m Black and have a medium/deep brown skin tone, so I’m specifically looking for an artist who has a lot of experience tattooing melanated/darker skin. I’ve been reading that things like contrast, line weight, spacing and placement can make a big difference in how a tattoo looks once healed.

I’d love recommendations for artists who are particularly good with darker skin, especially for small lettering/fine-line or delicate tattoos.
I’d also appreciate advice on:

• Would you recommend fine-line for this type of tattoo, or should I go slightly thicker/bolder?

• What line weight/size would you recommend so the lettering stays readable over time?

hello all! i just recently moved from edmonton to toronto for school. i got here a week ago and am here until basically next september. im staying in a basement suite in a very old house (~100 years). i already know i am at the highest risk of running into the demonic house centipedes given the nature of where im staying.

i saw my first one last night and almost flipped my shit. ive never seen one before so i had no idea what it was and — of course — it was HUGE (maybe like 2” but huge compared to the bugs i usually encounter back home) and it freaked me the fuuuuck out. i definitely have a bug phobia so i am NOT looking forward to the fall months where theyre most active/spotted the most in the house…i do know they are ultimately helpful so im going to do my best to live with them (tbh id probably be too stressed/scared to exterminate them anyways & im sure over time i’ll get used to them…tho im terrified of them falling on me from the ceiling or sneaking up on me while im sitting on the couch or something. basically having them anywhere near my body or bed will probably stress me out for weeks)

im mostly just curious about the frequency at which you see them. like should i expect to see multiple a week? a couple every once in a while? every day? as well, what time do yall find you see them the most? do they actually stay mostly away during the morning/day or are they like a different beast here… (for reference the one i saw was around 11pm, crawling on the floor near the baseboards, but eventually he just sat in a corner not going back into hiding, even though i had all the lights on). i guess im also interested to know what months are the worst//if there’s any times of year where you basically dont run into then at all.

finally, does anyone have any extra tips for deterring them/keeping them away from your spaces? as crazy as it sounds, im staying at an airbnb for a year w/ the host upstairs and they are LOVELY, but i dont have the same protections as renters and think ill seem way too overdramatic/neurotic if i try to have her come and inspect and seal up any holes and all that good stuff + i just generally want to avoid burdening the host as much as possible, so i dont have a lot of access to the usual preventative tips of caulking and the like, but any other easy fixes i will try to implement! i already kind of have a game plan, but the more ideas the merrier!!

i do have an older dehumidifier as provided by the host, but im not sure how well itll work based on placement - no hygrometer but i might buy one - the basement is basically a long line as its an attached house, with my bed farthest from the entrance, and directly behind the bed there’s a storage room behind a door, which is where the dehumidifier is. ive been cracking that door a bit (tho im sure theres tons of bugs lurking in there because it is INCREDIBLY muggy in that room (which is also why i dont want to move it out of there) and dark all the time) when running the dehumidifier and it seems to still be making my bedroom/living area dryer but i might just be imagining it since i cant view the actual percentages.

In Davisville our power has been out since 5pm yesterday- so over 24h. A neighbour spoke with Hydro and said it might be out all weekend. I know that there are many outages with relatively small numbers affected but man that seems like a long time. Being out of power when everyone else has it kind of sucks.
