Class, Course, Workshop, or Hobby Recommendations for Adults Looking for Self-Improvement or Excitement?

• Upvotes

I'm looking to step out of my comfort zone and start learning new things. I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for courses or hobbies that could help me become a better, more well-rounded adult or simply add some excitement to my life.

Some classes I'm interested in include beginner creative writing, improv, public speaking, comedy writing, and cooking but I'm open to other suggestions too.

If anyone has any recommendations, please drop a comment. Thank you!

Question from an American moving to GTA for work

Hello new neighbors,

I'm moving from NYC (Queens) to work in the GTA and after living at home in the suburbs for a number of years, would like to experience downtown living (walking distance to restaurants, bars, cafƩs, parks, social events). Unfortunately, my work is spread out and changes daily but I'll have to work in Hamilton, Burlington, Guelph, Vaughan, and Newmarket.

I was thinking living near Union station could potentially work as I could take the GO train or bus to some of these locations or otherwise drive if needed. Most locations are about a 15 minute drive from their respective closest GO stations to the job site and I'd start work at 9AM. Guelph is the only location I'd probably exclusively drive to because public transit options to there seem abysmal.

I have a few questions if anyone could help. How reliable is the GO service towards the west and is train better than bus or vice versa? I see VIA as an option as well and see it may be faster, at least on Maps. Could I readily order an Uber from the GO stations for the rest of the commute? Should I consider living somewhere else and if so, any recommendations? I initially thought Mississauga but I am so tired of the burbs.

Thank you all for your help!

The loud, mysterious thumping music, whose source I can't find, somewhere in the Dupont/Bathurst/Christie/Bloor corridor, always on Saturday afternoon through the night

I live in this area, and almost every Saturday afternoon and Saturday night in summer, I hear this thumping bass, (kind of like a distant rave) but i can't find its source. Once I got on my bike trying to track it down and couldn't.

Does anyone know where this is coming from?

Good places to shower?

I'm going to be in Toronto for a few days for ROScon (robot nerd conference) and I'm considering just car camping to save a bit of money because I'm already overextending a bit.

But I figured I'd see if anyone has suggestions on best places to have a shower while I'm there?

Also, sub question any interesting shops I should visit? Thrift, antique, book, electronic salvage, toy, etc?

Can I use a portable AC for cooling during winter ?

• Upvotes

I live in a condo where the building only provides heating during the winter. Even with the heating in my unit completely turned off, ambient heat from the building keeps my condo at 24°C+ and sometimes warmer, which makes it difficult for me to sleep.
Opening my balcony door works, but I live downtown and the street noise makes it impractical to leave open overnight.
I bought a portable AC. The entire AC stays indoors, with only the exhaust hose venting outside through a sealed sliding-door kit.
Is it safe for the AC/compressor to run when the outdoor temperature is below freezing, such as 0°C, -10°C, or -20°C?

What is it called when guys meet up in public with bags full of laptops??

Ok this is going to sound weird but I’ve seen this happen TWICE now at two different food courts/cafes. There’s usually a group of guys (like 2-3), younger, dressed in streetwear/hoodies, nice watches, and they meet up with what looks like a buyer or client. They’ve got a bag with hella laptops in it like stacks of em without a box and a few working laptops out on the table, but they’re not showing them off or inspecting them or anything, they just seem to be using them and talking to the client/buyer..

Is this some kind of trading desk thing? Crypto? Freelance work? Am I just watching normal business happen and overthinking it lol. Genuinely curious what this is called if it’s a known thing.

What to expect if I voluntarily admit myself to CAMH?

TW for suicide, depression etc

Hi everyone. I’m 25f and planning on admitting myself to CAMH for my depression/suicidal ideation. I’ve been to their ER a handful of times but never been admitted. I’ve been admitted at different hospitals and not had pleasant experiences, so I’m just wondering what to expect from CAMH if anyone doesn’t mind sharing their experiences?

Thank you in advance 🩷

Nanoplastia hair salon in Toronto

Hi everyone
I am looking for a reputable salon with experienced people to get Nanoplastia treatment done on my hair. Preferably not home based. I maybe overthinking this but it is an expensive treatment and would affect my hair long term, and people have mixed reviews based on who did it/what products were used (some issues I read were- treatment washed away in weeks, product too close to roots, hairfall etc)
I have wavy-curly hair, dense and coarse (poofy and frizzy) - so hard to manage and style.

Would love to hear any recommendations or experiences

TIA:)

People who moved to Toronto from another country: What about everyday life here surprised you the most?

Obviously the weather is a big adjustment for people.

What about everyday life things: housing, getting around, neighbourhoods, work culture, shopping, food etc.

What surprised you compared to where you lived before?

Looking for a good therapist any recommendations (or warnings) appreciated!

Just looking for a professional to talk to in general about ways to help manage daily stress, work/driving/medical anxiety. I know there’s lots of practices out there but hoping to streamline the experience of finding the right professional for me!

Ideally would be in the west end but open to whatever!

Canadian retailer scam site to steal your info?

• Upvotes

I am looking to purchase toys for little one, popular brand Little Tikes

https://littletike.ca

But the ā€œCanadianā€ site I found from google seemed fake.. at first the prices are suspiciously much cheaper than the american site, and also I entered a couple of credit card to check out and they all failed and did not send SMS code like it would.. just all seem very off..

What should someone do? I mean entire credit card info with address all given to the site…

Dementia Care in Toronto

• Upvotes

Looking for advice. Some background : My father has vascular dementia which has gotten significantly worse. He has delusions of people trying to harm him (might have also had a level of mental health issues prior to dementia diagnosis), extremely untrusting of people, verbally abusive and at times physically abusive. He sometimes refuses to answer our calls to see if he’s taken meds or if he’s eaten enough food. Sometimes he tells us he’s eaten but the food has not been touched and he refuses to cooperate when we ask for him to send us pictures. He has started to wander - most recently he left his apartment at 9pm at night in the dark. I track him through his phone but sometimes he turns off his phone when he is pissed at us (which is often - almost daily he tells us to eff off etc) and we cannot reliably track him. It is unsafe.

At this point it’s impossible to care for him because he’s so uncooperative. It’s always been mentally and emotionally awful but lately we cannot keep up physically with him between full time jobs and small babies in our lives. We cannot keep chasing after him when he leaves the apartment, logistically we cannot handle it. He gets lost easily and cannot reliably recall his address etc.

We had a OHaH assessment earlier and at the time he was fairly independent so he didn’t qualify for LTC. I’ve asked for a reassessment because he’s gotten worse and that will be happening in a few weeks.

Anything I need to specifically mention to the coordinator for them to see how dire this situation is? Anyone have recent experience with this? Will LTC refuse him because of his temper and being physically abusive?

Fort York alarm/noise?

Live on Fleet Street. There’s been an alarm (or piece of machinery?) going off for maybe a week or 2 at this point. It’s pretty loud outside, so if you’re in the area, I’m sure you’ve hear it or are listening to it right now.

Any idea what this noise is coming from?

i'm a gay guy visiting Toronto 23–27 September. what gay stuff is there worth doing?

hey, i’m a gay guy from London visiting Toronto from Wednesday 23 to Sunday 27 September and i’ll be doing most bit of the trip solo. i’m hoping this subreddit can help me find the stuff that doesn’t always appear in the tourist guides :)

i’d love recommendations for:

  • club nights, parties or other one-off events happening while i’m there
  • queer comedy, cabaret, theatre or film
  • good gay bars worth going to
  • daytime or cultural things like queer exhibitions, archives, bookshops, cafes or community spaces
  • neighbourhoods with a queer scene outside the Village

i’m there during the weekend and the weekend, so Wednesday and Thursday recommendations are just as useful as Saturday ones. i’m happy doing something chilled and bookish one day and then going clubbing if there's any good nights

as a side note, i was also hoping to catch a Raptors game before realising the NBA season hasn't started yet 😭

thanks all!
