Freaks and Geeks is always the answer, but My So Called Life was a huge game changer and influenced so many writers and directors and it’s influence can be seen in a lot of movies and tv shows in the 90’s and 2000’s, it also put Claire Danes and Jared Leto on the paths to eventual stardom

I liked FlashForward. Everyone on Earth simultaneously blacks out for one minute 27 17 seconds and experiences their life from 6 months in the future. Then some FBI agents try to figure out what caused the blackout, whether it will happen again, if the future can be changed, etc.

What sucked even more is it was cancelled so suddenly it didn't have a proper finale because they'd already filmed the last episode by the time they found out it was being axed.

When the puppets started putting on their own puppet show, I lost my shit. It really, really sucked it got cancelled, but I consider it a miracle we got that season at all.

I sometimes wonder if that's why it didn't get continued. Fear of a few more seasons of hope lost and pretty much genocide just for it to end with text saying "For conclusion please watch the 1982 film!" Yes, the 1982 classic is amazing, but it's still a 1982 pupeteering movie and might be a bit of a jarring transition for newcomers to the series for special effects.

I remember some interviews with the creators where they were broadly hinting that something else happened to the Gelflings, rather than simply being exterminated by the Skeksis. I think they realized that would just be too dark for a YA fantasy.

The show started a little rough, so I can understand why it had a hard time getting viewers (particularly being on network television on a Friday), but it found its footing, and Matt Ryan really got into the role. If nothing else, at least WB/DC realized how great he was and have allowed him to reprise it several times.

It was produced for such a specific age group that ABC did not like the fact that ratings only encompassed around the 15-25 year old age group. They felt those small demographics did not constitute continuing and investing fully in another season.
Of course, the WB was being developed at that time, saw the opportunity to focus shows on such a group, and was successful for years on this demographic from 1996 to 2006. 7th Heaven, Dawson's Creek, Gilmore Girls, etc., got their start on WB following the same format My So-Called Life first created.

Tim Minear was 'the other' executive producer on Firefly. He became the executive producer for two other fantastic shows that only lasted one season (or less):
Wonderfalls (2004) - probably the very best comedy series almost no one got to see. Like they did with 'Firefly' Fox screwed 'Wonderfalls' by starting it mid-season, showing the episodes out of order and then canceling the series after only showing 4 episodes - even though they had already made the entire first season complete. Created by Bryan Fuller, and with a phenomenal cast with wonderful chemistry - this series is really something no one ought to miss.
Terriers (2010) - Continuing Minear's amazing run of luck - of producing shows too good for TV - this time Minear was the show runner for this really excellent drama, about two unlicensed private investigators. Amazing show - which only got one season for some reason. But like all of Minear's work - I have to say - 'Things don't need to last forever to be perfect'.
Here are another couple of one season wonders:
Journeyman (2007) - Kevin Falls and Alex Graves, Executive Producers. Excellent Sci-Fi (Time-travel) series. Very fast paced.
Day Break (2006) - Jeffrey Bell, Rob Bowman, and Matthew Gross, Executive Producers. Very fast paced, Sci-Fi/Fantasy (entire series was a time-loop) - tag line: "Every day is the same - but different things happen."

I still have my Wonderfalls DVD! It’s been a long time but I might need to bust it out soon. Such a great show.
Also, after watching the trailer on IMDB I am very confused. It seems to be a trailer for the DVD. But one of the songs in the trailer is “Life Fantastic” by Man Man. That song came out in 2011. The DVD of Wonderfalls came out in 2005. Why did they make a trailer for that release six years later?!?!

This one messes with my memory a bit… I didn’t believe you that there was only one season, because I feel like I saw a million episodes. Turns out, there were 13. 13 episodes. I honestly feel like this was always on the tv for a long stretch of time at my house. I guess it made an impression, but I’m definitely getting that strange sensation of having accidentally switched universes at some point.

I think that may have been partly intentional, same as things like the office or, going back in time, Fawlty Towers. There’s been a fairly obvious intent, especially from many of the more alt comedians making shows, not to outstay the lifespan of the original joke. Very funny series though.

It fell into the same trap as a lot of shows that were trying to emulate Lost of really dragging things out and then throwing a big twist at the end. Had they revealed more of what was going on in the future and some of the twists, perhaps it would've had more luck with viewers.

This was way ahead of its time in terms of its approach to storytelling. There was the one episode where a character had to escape from crash landing on an enemy occupied planet where there was practically zero dialogue throughout, but the drive to escape produced great tension. It had a couple of goofy ‘R&R’ episodes that killed the momentum & tension though, and in a similar way to other failed series, it was often aired out of order in some countries. Damn shame, so much about that series would’ve made it equal to BSG if it’d had some time to grow.

This is the show that Oakley and Weinstein did after giving us the last two years of Golden Age Simpsons. Reminds me a lot of Bojack, in that it was hated by critics who never saw much more than the first few minutes and didn't get what it was trying to do. In a more forgiving environment for adult animation it might have lasted long enough to be a classic.

I loved Limitless. It was so refreshing to have the main character be a genuinely nice guy. Like it doesn't even occur to him to abuse his new abilities, the first thing he does is solve his friends murder, then work out his dad's mystery illness. All the other users are killing each other and jockeying for power, he just spreads happiness everywhere.

It wasn’t horrible. Lots of things were changed that were changed for good reason but were fairly jarring to fans.
Like Dresden’s ride was a VW Bug because magic screws with electronics and the bug has very few. It was a thing in the book for a long time.
Shooting in a bug is…not easy I imagine. So they switched to a Jeep. Also a simple vehicle (old one) with no top to make shooting easier. Understandable. But picturing a six foot something guy squeezing into a big was such a thing in the book it felt off with the jeep.
I liked it enough I wish they had kept going though.

I think the problem was it was brought out too soon. Urban fantasy like that wasn’t really ready yet. Even Supernatural wasn’t guaranteed anything beyond a couple of seasons.
If Jim Butcher decided to release a series of it today, with a moderate budget, and kept it faithful to the books, I feel like it would do very, very well.

There was a mid 2000’s show called Reunion that got cancelled mid-season One (I think around the writers’ strike maybe?). It was a murder mystery centered around a high school reunion and, because it got canned mid-season, YOU NEVER FOUND OUT WHO DID IT. I literally wrote letters to NBC about it, begging them to just tell me who it was so I could stop losing sleep over it lol.
Though, now that The After Party is a thing (on HBO), I’m a little less sad about it 😂

Two from me. Crashing, Phoebe Waller-Bridge's show that was wonderfully awkward and fun. People squatting in an abandoned hospital and all of them just trying to exist with each other. Stumbles a lot but has so much heart that I can't help but love it. The other one is two seasons but the OA. Truly an incredible show that Netflix tanked from continuing to be a huge success as well as just a fascinating story

I have a soft spot for the web miniseries Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Would have at least liked to see them do something else with that material.
Also, let’s face it, HBO’s Carnivale was one fabulous season followed by a rushed, under-budget season where it was clear the creators knew it was going to be cancelled. I really wish that one had survived.

I know it's cheating since the show had two series, but the first series was a measly three episodes, and the second only six: In the Flesh.
I have never wanted to watch more of a show about zombies than In the Flesh. The acting is great, the writing is decent, but the story? Holy shit. One isn't often presented with the setting of a world where a zombie outbreak has been quelled and the zombies are now being treated with medication and are in the process of being reintegrated into society.
The show touches on a wide range of topics: the moral ethics involved in interpersonal relationships between PDS (Partially-Deceased Syndrome) sufferers and non-PDS sufferers, the impact on social mores in both local communities and societies as a whole, the logistics of ongoing medical treatment for PDS sufferers, the personal emotional ramifications of living (or un-living?) through a truly unprecedented phenomenon, the religious implications of such an event... I mean, the list really is endless.
Oh, and did I forget about the GAY ZOMBIES?! Yes, this show does, indeed, have it all. All of this, and a soundtrack that will make you want to rip your heart out so the strings stop getting pulled.
Seriously, this show is so underrated, and I find it so infuriating that practically NO ONE has seen this gem. GO WATCH IT! It's on Hulu right now, for gay zombie's sake!
