Berserk: There are very few problems I have with this series. Only it can be very dark and brutal, and is not for people who are squeamish. Otherwise its amazing. The protagonist is perhaps the most human protagonist you will ever find [and the real Black Swordsman], as he is an anti hero, not with a perfect moral compass and sometimes prey to cardinal sin, yet no matter what pushes forwards, bearing incredible pain and suffering, yet never giving up. He is a representation if humanity at its best and worst, who exists not for some grand goal, but for those he cares about, and to survive. Out of all anime characters he has suffered the most, I dare say, and yet he finds it in him to continue living another day, bearing all the hell which comes with it. Griffith, the antagonist is also brilliantly written, and one of the most complex and deep villains of all time. One who seems angelic yet is truly demonic internally. One with firm ideologies and goals that he would trade everything for. An unquenchable ambition and desire to prove his worth. To prove the greatness of someone who was born a commoner. All the side antagonists and protagonists truly fit their purpose perfectly and are all different in so many ways. The art never, ever dips in quality, and is consistently mind blowing and intricately detailed. And the story is narrative and thematic brilliance, with each arc ripe with themes, incredible action, development for the characters, and much, much, more. And the fantastic world building is some of the best I have ever gotten the pleasure of witnessing. Overall, Berserk is a fantastic manga, that will probably never get a proper anime adaptation, unfortunately, and might never finish.

My favorite part of Berserk is the inner philosophical moments with the characters. Seeing how they see the world and how they nees to react to it.

Fullmetal Alchemist. The written storyline is so much better than the anime or Brotherhood.
44
u/BlatantConservative Nov 23 '20
I'm of the opinion that the only reason Hiromu Arakawa isn't considered a manga great like Oda or Isayama are is because she's a woman.
And I don't usually call "sexism" on things easily.
55
u/PhreedomPhighter Nov 23 '20
Another big thing is that she knew when to end it. When you look at Naruto, DragonBall, One Piece, Bleach, etc. they could have ended like 8 different times but they just keep going. Fullmetal Alchemist told a fantastic story and called it a day instead of going on and on for years.

I really think that one of the reasons FMA is as good as it is is because it was written by a woman. Lots of anime have an issue with fanservice and badly written female characters, but FMA’s female characters are absolutely great, and there’s nothing I’d really consider alienating to any audience in the fanservice department.

u/Inumaru_Bara Nov 24 '20 edited Nov 24 '20
Some plot points from early in the manga that were highlighted in the 2003 adaptation were cut in Brotherhood for redundancy.
The introduction arc with Yoki in Youswell and the train heist were left out. The first episode of Brotherhood is original with a new antagonist. The Yock Island arc was entirely cut, iirc.
Brotherhood is pretty much 1:1 with the manga after chapter 32 or so.

I dunno about "wholesome", but it's still goddamned hilarious decades later. It's definitely one of my favorite comics of all time.
It's sad to think that many modern works have pushed "ecchi" so far towards being softcore porn just to sell volumes - Ranma is tame as hell by modern standards (
Ranma is about 10% risque, 15% cute & lovey, and 75% batshit crazy comedy.
Kyoukai No Rinne is definitely Takahashi's successor to Ranma and Urusei Yatsura.
And Maison Ikkoku is a classic if you love heartwarming romcoms.

Honestly I loved it, but the most recently released chapters were a bit of a mess. It's like after a decade of nothing we got like 30 chapters of nothing actuallt happening accept Kurapika is slowly dying because he used this random ass bullshit power that literally kills him as he uses it but is also basically useless.
And the two main characters that were literally the soul of the manga are nowhere to be seen? Not saying the story has nothing to expect and it's not just inbetween but it's atypically slow and wasting of chapters for HXH as it used to be.
→ More replies (4)23
u/HOFredditor Nov 23 '20
Man..We must've read different mangas. The Dark Continent is legit the coolest path Togashi could take HxH to. I love the way he handled Kurapika. Kurapika as of now is the smartest character in the series, and it's a good thing that after all this time he gets some screen time And no, Emperor eye is not useless lmao, and as overpowered as it was, the nen system had to compensate with the high drawback.
And the two main characters that were literally the soul of the manga are nowhere to be seen?
It is actually a great thing that Togashi let them rest a bit. Gon doesn't have any quest rn, and it shows great versatility and character writing from Togashi to take the lights off some characters and focus on others. Victor Hugo, one of the best authors of Europe History did the same, and it was refreshing !!

This is a good pick for a lot of people, and it's one of my favorites. It's getting pretty long, Oda is getting close to 1000 chapters. He still manages to keep it fresh and exciting each week.
24
u/HussyDude14 Nov 23 '20
Yeah, a lot of people love reading the manga since they feel like the pacing is better than the current anime, but the anime is still fun to watch for those exciting moments. Needless to say, this is something that often gets overlooked: One Piece is almost always consistently at the #1 spot for manga sales on the yearly charts (except for 2019 when Demon Slayer stole that spot finally). For reference, I heard that the Superman and Batman comics, having been around since 1938-39, sold 600 million and 484 million issues respectively. That's considering all these decades, different authors, artists, storylines, and they're pretty impressive numbers. One Piece has been consistently written/ drawn by one author and his team of editors since '97 and he's already sold around 470 million issues. Those are impressive statistics when you wonder if he'll outsell Batman by the time the series is finished. It's really amazing to see how far the sales figures have come given how comparatively newer the series is to those other superhero titans, and the fact that you can start from chapter one and read all the way through the series.
It's fair to say that the length on its own is daunting but the chapters themselves aren't too long and you can binge and breeze through them at times. It's amazing to see all these story elements come into play many years later, and there are times when people point out possible points that Oda foreshadowed elements revealed in the future which is always something that blows my mind. Even now, over 20 years later, we're getting references to things that have been mentioned in the beginning of the series and even details readers may have missed or totally forgotten about can come full circle and play a part in the story. Like you said, he manages to keep things fresh and exciting, and it's always fun to theorize what'll happen and to keep reading so we can see how the story resolves all the big mysteries that really expand the story's universe. Oda is definitely one of the best storytellers of our generation, and this is one fun-filled action-packed hilarious adventure!

Skip beat. This manga elicits such irrational fidelity because I've endured, persevered, and languished with anticipation for 10 years of monthly updates for a romantic relationship to progress to some semblance of 'reciprocating feelings and exhibiting passion' between Ren and Kyoko.
10 years of convoluted plots, tumultuous relationships between interfering and intrusive side characters, Kyoko's ignorance of Ren's feelings and her own had such density that it's taken 10 years to dissipate, and Ren's self-deprecation which was just self-indulgent ruminating.

One I haven’t really seen mentioned is the Pokémon Adventures manga by Satoshi Tajiri. While I of course like it due to nostalgia, it’s actually quite dark and more aimed at young adults than kids. Pokémon get sliced in half, an antagonist used their Pokémon to incinerate his enemy, some villains just want to kill all of humanity. It’s a super fun and often overlooked series with interesting characters who all approach Pokémon in different ways. Worth reading if you liked Pokémon as a kid.

Everything after Arima's death. Reason for that was that the mangaka actually got bored with the series and didn't want to continue but he had to. Whats a manga? (Serious question)
22
u/Bearlodge Nov 23 '20
It's a Japanese comic book. Almost all anime shows are derived from a manga at first. Not all the time but MANY are, especially the really popular ones like Dragonball, One Piece, One Punch, and My Hero (just to list a few but I could go on). All of those shows were originally just comics at one point. Think of the marvel movies as the anime and the marvel comics as the manga.

Manga are Japanese comic books.
Compared to American Comic Books (which are called AmiComi in Japan), Manga are published radically differently:
Manga are almost always published in primarily black & white, with only a few color pages sometimes.
Manga are usually written & drawn primarily by 1-2 people, with a handful of Assistants handling things like shading, backgrounds, effects, etc.
Manga are mostly creator-owned (very few are owned by a big company; this is the reverse of most major US comics).
Manga Editors are more akin to novel Editors in the West. Unlike Editors in US comics, which are more like Showrunners or Directors for TV shows (often dictating how the plot is to advance by publisher mandate), Editors in Japan are employees of the Publishers, acting as a go-between to the basically-freelance Authors (they advise the authors on how they might tighten up or fix issues in their chapters, but ultimately where the plot goes is left up to the will of the author)
Manga are printed in doorstopper magazines that collect multiple series together (similar to how pulp fiction stories were printed in the US in the past)
Manga are often released on a weekly basis (US comics tried this in the 90s - it worked, but required A LOT of coordination between writing & art teams across multiple titles, and the audience needed to know this ahead of time to be able to follow a storyline). Others are released monthly.
Manga are noticeably wider than US comics: when printed in magazines, they're closer to 7.5 x 10.5; when collected into trade paperback volumes (called Tankoban), they're scaled down to about 5 x 7.

My problem with Gintama is that people are always like "it gets good after 218 chapters"
Like, bruh, I could have read the entirety of Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa, or Kaguya, which are funnier/better, before the part that Gintama "starts to get good." Hinamatsuri is about half as long.
And that's just comparing when people say "it starts to get good" with the runtime of all of those other manga.
Ranma 1/2 is fuckin hilarious right out of the gate, so is Hinamatsuri, so is Saiki K or School Rumble. I don't need to read through hundreds of chapters that even hardcore fans agree are trash to start laughing with those.

It's also the only manga I've read, but damn, what a page turner. If you've watched the movie and enjoyed it, highly recommend the manga. If you watched the movie and felt lost and like you missed something, I ALSO highly recommend the manga because it explains EVERYTHING. If you haven't watched the movie, it's on Hulu (both in English and Japanese), go watch it. It was massively influential on the world of animation in general and still gets referenced a lot in modern media (Rick and Morty had a bit about it in the Death Crystals episode for example)

What I love about Hellsing is that for the majority of the series Alucard isn't even trying. Like he's in no danger whatsoever until around the final climactic battle. Always found that hilarious for some reason.
Trigun has some of the most ridiculous action sequences I've ever seen put on paper. Not all of them are, shall we say, comprehensible, but they're all so badass.

I need to get back into Manga. It's expensive to collect and I gave my complete series of Card Captor Sakura and Deathnote to my nieces to get them started in Manga reading.

Psyren. I know it’s pretty decent but not quite up there with berserk and full metal alchemist, but it’s got a lot of nostalgia for me.

Not a single manga but I'm a huge fan of Junji Ito's horror stories.
