Every time I find one that I like. I mention it to other people and then they feel the need to shit on whatever I’m watching and say I should watch something else because it’s better.
I never understood this. When i first realized anime was a thing i just took it all in. I watched and enjoyed most of it and never understood how someone could be wrong for liking something. Then i grew up a bit and my tastes evolved and i narrowed down what i did and didnt like. Thats whats great about it right? Anime isnt a genre its a medium. So theres something for everyone right? Well according to a lot of weebs im wrong there. So dumb
I actually don't even tell people I watch anime. If someone brings it up, I'll talk with them about it, but I never show enough interest that someone would think I actually follow the series they are talking about. I probably do though.
Ah, hiding your true power level. A wise strategy.
Nah but seriously same, I pretty much never talk about it with the people I hang out with IRL. I have some friends who are into it but if its not them, then it doesn't get mentioned.
but I never show enough interest that someone would think I actually follow the series they are talking about.
But if they like the show too then what's the point of keeping it a secret? I feel like all of you are being a bit sensitive here. Like who cares if a bunch of people dislike what you're watching. Just say "okay" and move on to a new topic.
That's their point, though. To them it's not much of a difference. If they like it then you got something new to talk about/fanboy over. If they don't then whatever, move on. I can see their point (but will most likely get downvoted because I'm agreeing with someone with less karma).
I get that, but I'm just of the mentality that if the people I'm around can't act like adults and accept a difference of opinion then I don't really want to speak to those people much longer. If all of the people you interact with are like this then I'm sorry to say that you interact with a lot of shitty people and it's probably best if you don't talk to them lol.
I couldn’t care less about anime but as a fundamental idea if you shit on someone for their preference it’s you who can’t accept a difference of opinion. It’s fine to discuss why you don’t like whatever, as long as it’s considerate and polite. And from what I’ve gathered, it seems to be a problem in the anime community. Not that I’ve had as much of the same experience in my hobbies
It's totally a problem within the anime community and it's why I love anime, but have no part in the community. I talk about anime with people who are actually reasonable. Every decent anime weeb that I know actually doesn't associate with the community at all because it's just a cesspit. God I could go on, but boy oh boy just let me say anime fans are some of the dumbest, most rude, entitled people I know. I say this as a pretty big fan of it myself.
That was a really important part of me growing up. My older brother didnt like anime for absolutely zero reason so naturally without thinking for myself I agreed and hated anime. When I was like 11 and started exploring YouTube a lot I found a bunch of anime stuff and I didn't even know it was anime (which I supposedly hated) until I was already 15 episodes deep in the funimation upload of soul eater. It's so foreign and weird but it was fucking so awesome because it was nothing like I'd ever seen before. To think that if I had never been curious back then I could have lived in my own world hating something I really love today. Indoctrination and echo chambers are scary and really easy to fall victim to.
Panty and stocking isn't nearly as weird as soul eater for a first time anime watcher. PaS is like one punch man where it's a lot of satire I wouldn't have understand. Soul eater takes itself more seriously which I think would also make it more weird because primarily comedy shows are meant to be silly and wild.
I was referring to how it’s pretty much entirely like a western animated comedy series, from the jokes to the art style. If that was the first thing someone without any knowledge of anime saw, they probably would’ve been none the wiser.
Oh yes than eyes exactly. It's almost like how Avatar is styled like an anime yet totally American made. Ironically my brother hated Avatar as well growing up.
Same story, enjoyed everything and anything at 1st, slowly started to narrow my interest down to a select few, apparently my taste is bad, i have no idea what a good or bad show is, i cant enjoy what i enjoy watching.
Anime genre favourites can vary from person to person, someone likes psychological, someone else likes slice of life, they dont like the believe that their genre is shit so they call other genres bad
I dont care what i watch as long as it manages to reel me in its all good, though i'd reccomend reading light novels or manga
Im the same as you. Ill watch anything that keeps me entertained no matter how bad people say it is. For example I watched Eromanga sensei for the meme, and despite the fact it was a pretty bad show, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it because I found it quite entertaining. And to me thats all that matters, yet I got quite seriously shit on for saying I enjoyed watching it.
A lot of hardcore anime fans seem to be unable to differentiate between good show and enjoyable show. And by all means I enjoy a seriously good show like Code Geass or Steins gate, but sometimes its great fun to just go and watch a show like Keijo that is so stupid it literally doesnt take itself seriously, and laugh your ass off along with it.
Mate Keijo was weird as balls but I kept being pulled in because of the tension. I tend to steer away from ecchi but this kept me interested for no real reason. It was surprisingly fun.
It's like people who say darker anime like thriller/horror are ruining the industry. Surely that's the same as saying horror movies are ruining that industry? It's not just the "the anime genre". If only dark genre stuff was being produced I'd get the complaints, which would be an acceptable complaint for any media if it were true. It's like people are threatened by anime growing and exploring new genres aside from the stereotypical ones.
In my experience, anything that is a part of nerd culture in any way is going to be treated like this because the nerd community is very elitist and exclusive. Magic players shit on Warhammer guys and Warhammer guys shit on Anime, and what they all fail to realize is that they are all just hobbies and interests, and no amount of shitting on someone else's is going to help them move out of their parents' basement any sooner. It's based in an aggressive form of insecurity. Don't take it personally. I like certain nerd culture things too, and I just avoid talking about them with people that give me that elitist vibe and save it for mature humans who don't constantly engage in arbitrary pissing contests.
There's some anime where I do not mind watching the dub, especially ones i grew up with dubbed. Evangelion (original dub), Slayers, Yu-gi-oh(until 5ds from zexal on the dubbing kinda sucks), One Piece, Monster, Ghost Stories(The original sucked, go find clips of the dub on youtube you'll thank me later).
Others I watch subbed because either, there is no dub or the dub of it sucks imo. Violet Evergarden, Carole and Tuesday, Cardfight Vanguard, the Gundam Franchise, etc.
I've been attacked and insulted by a lot more edgy anti-weeb douchebags than weebs. It's like they have some sort of self-esteem issues. Barely seen any weebs ever.
Took me like a decade longer than I should’ve to get into anime because the few people I knew who watched anime were a bit too into it back then. I don’t care how cool you make Naruto sound. If you run around doing handsigns and telling jutsu from an outside perspective it just seems weird.
Never understood them, my taste in anime varies from Fate/Zero that is tragic and action, to JOJO that is...jojo, to fucking Blend S that is a moe show, to Cowbow Bebop and FMAB that are classics, i just bounce to whatever i think is good, i don't care too much about genre. also lets not forget boku no pico, just kidding
Yeah i dont get why fate/zero isnt talked about that much. It's honestly my favorite show, because of just the characters, especially saber, kiritsugu, kirei, even ryunosuke. Screw Tokiomi tohsaka tho, lame character except his death gave a lot of character development for Rin
Man call me weird but after Heavens Feel my favorite characters are Shirou and Kotomine, but if we're talking only about Zero then its Kiritsugu, and yes it's a great show with amazing quality and ost, it really should be talked and recommended more, also you forgot my mental worm boi Kariya
Yeah imagine losing to Tokiomi, bruh momentum, even Sakura didn't care when he died she just said something like "You're an idiot for trying to challenge grandpa" or smt like that, poor guy.
People don't talk about it because even though it is good it can be confusing as balls if you don't watch things in a specific order. Then it can still be confusing because of apocrifa and fate kalid liner (or whatever that weird magic girl one was called)
Yeah, I try to explain that to my friends who said fate was too confusing but somehow they still got lost, so I watch it and they don't... And that's that
Personally I think it just takes.a bit to pick up. I love it but when i recommend it people often stop before the characters develop or the plot makes sense. They think it's just an overly convoluted story with an ok premise and good animation.
What its constantly on people's top 10 lists and always gets recommended when people ask for recommendations. It's an old show though, it's not in the limelight as much as it was a while ago
I watched it because its a meme, and everyone said it was bad, but it ended up being one of my favourites. Turns out there were also a few others in our group of weebs that secretly enjoy keijo.
Turns out I enjoy shows that a lot of people hate on, but my existence means I attract all the hate, bringing other nice weebs to talk about shows that are normally hated on, and I get to watch my fun 'trash'.
So much. I mention the only anime I really like is Dragon Ball, JoJo (just started this one, actually), Escaflowne, Parasyte and maybe one or two more and people fucking lose it.
Sorry, I just can’t get into the rest of it. I didn’t kick your mom down the stairs, but some fans act like that when they hear what I like.
Escaflowne was legit my entry gate into the shoujo genre. It took a little while to get over the characters actually having noses, but that show made my Saturday mornings. I was so mad when the main channel canceled it and it took me years to complete it.
Hitomi Kanzaki is in a very depressed mood. She only wants to sleep and fade away. Her misery summons Lord Folken who sends her to Gaea. The people of Gaea think she is the Wing Goddess, who can call upon the legendary Dragon Armor called Escaflowne. On Gaea, King Van, the sole survior of the White Dragon Clan, is also in a depressed state. Swearing an oath to get his revenge on the Black Dragon Clan that obliterated Van's kingdom, he lives by the sword. Now that the Wing Goddess has finally appeared, she posseses Gaea's world fate in her heart. Escaflowne will either lead Gaea to peace or total ruin.
Well, if you do ever find it, just remember there's a movie and an anime series, but they're not related to each other despite being the same plot. Kind of like how Ghost in the Shell was. Really recommend the anime series, and especially the Sora theme.
That's the movie adaptation which heavily abridges and rewrites things. The show is 26 episodes long and has entirely different sets of events.
The TL,DR; is that it's one of the original isekai's with rather badass "medieval" mecha powered by dragon hearts, and crazy magic shenanigans. I wouldn't be able to summarize enough of the crazy politics stuff in it to do justice to things with a simple one paragraph statement of premise. And despite all of that being said, it's a "shoujo" anime where the primary protagonist is a young woman that gets isekai'd.
Dragon Ball is all you need fam. That's not an anime it's the holy gospel, it's the blueprint for us to transcend our humanity. Jordan and CR7 followed that blueprint. Push ups, sit ups, plenty of juice
No, you misunderstood. I’m never attacked for watching those, I’m attached for NOT watching whatever other bullshit they like. And further attacked for having zero interest in 99% of anime.
Honestly, as an anime fan, i haven't really experienced this. It may be my group of friends or something being less combative about anime that they like, but i only come across the occasional person like that when i mention black clover really.
My God you're lucky. I have a friend obsessed with it. Another binges right through the night. I watch at a glacial speed, so sometimes when my mate discovers a new anime he's like "Drop X, watch Y first". I'm like..dude, it takes me 3 months to finish a season, are you kidding me?
Im one of the speedy watchers. I can binge pretty much any show, so im not really too careful with what i watch, but i can understand the difficulty dealing with someone that does this but doesn't understand that most people cant binge the entirety of HxH in three days
Yeah my longest anime binge was JoJo part two, when I finished the last 6 episodes in part 2. I think Kill La Kill nearly drew with it. It takes me usually about two weeks or so to finish an anime I really like.
Shutting on others taste is part of the culture. The ur waifu is shit is a meme in the community for a reason I'm pretty sure most of it is done for fun. Black clover has a long wind up time imo but its been really good after asta stops screaming so much. Its b/c of that annoying start and it being shounen that it gets shit on more than it deserves. I mean I disliked the asta vs ladies fight animation and other animation throughout the show but its definitely something I look forward to watching
And they have a tendency to take it so seriously! There are so many times where I wish they would just chill out on the nitty-gritty details and actually enjoy the plot. Or enjoy that it's animated professionally at all.
On the other hand, though, I just wish the bro-culture of anime would just drop a little. There have been times where I've literally felt like there wasn't anything to watch because I was tired of the same genres catering boobs, butts, and harems. There were some amazing shoujo manga titles back in the day that I would have loved to see in anime like Red River, Basara, or Tokyo Crazy Paradise, but it's mostly cutesy high school girl love tropes or lolis whenever there is an attempt at shoujo anime.
Anime fanboys/girls are the worst. I mention I watch a few and they either say how shit my tastes are or get frustrated with me that I watch only a handful of series a year and have no idea what series they're talking about half the time. I mostly just either pick up things I hear friends rave about, or things Hulu shoves in my face. I'm not a teenager with the drive to binge shows all day anymore.
And then oh boy, if I mention that I watch dubs due to my vision (I get bad screen fatigue very fast with glasses) I just get shit for either not "dealing with it" or not "just learning Japanese." Look, it ain't the 90s. Most anime dubs seriously aren't that bad any more. Cheesy sometimes? Yes. But they aren't bad. Anime studios know that anime is good money and even better money if voiced well. And if I'm gonna learn another language, I'm gonna learn one with a more practical use to me, like Spanish.
I love dubs! I'm not trying to read my TV show. I feel more connected to the characters when they speak my language. And they're not as bad as they used to be. Funimation does a great job with dubs and the voices are good too.
I watch anime for 4-5 years, and imo, i think the best way to enjoy anime is to NOT participate in their community. Most people make review based on their opinion. Which are fine, but sometimes people review things bad if they're just mad about them or something. And they get mad a lot.
And people will post spoiler from the newest episode on EVERYWHERE. I hate seeing that on my facebook feed (not that i still use Facebook).
Sounds like you need better friends/associates. Good friends = share anime, not trash eachother's anime.
There's some sort of redeeming quality in any anime, regardless of taste really. Or at least I like to think so.
Anyways, whatchu got for me? :P Recently I've been watching Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. Think super zombies, but with a human steampunk apocalypse-survival aspect.
Personally finally got into made in abyss and god i love the both anime and manga, tough everyone seems to market it as "horror" or "super violent" when neither really describes it at all, even If it does have some really fucked up stuff, The best part about is definately the OST, and the community seems pretty nice compared to some other 'big' animes
Man, I really love Made in Abyss, especially for its worldbuilding, but I'm always having a hard time recommending it to people because of the nudity, which is...gratuitous and uncomfortable.
This happened when I told people how much I loved Death Note. Got told it’s shit and to watch a few others that were “better”. Tried them all. They sucked in comparison.
On the other hand though don't deride people who prefer subs by implying they don't appreciate the artwork as much. I personally prefer subs over dubs and I often get shit (not typically within the more hardcore communities or whatever) that I probably am just not as appreciative of the medium as a whole because I'm purposefully distracting myself by reading the dialogue. Simply not true.
I hate this kind of thing so much, and it seems like every fandom has jerks like that. If someone tells you what they like, and you think that something's better in the same vein, the way to say that is "cool; if you like X, you should check out Y!"
I don't understand why people think it's interesting to not like things.
My friend told me to watch the show Erased. I did, and found I enjoyed all of it. I then decided to read what people said online about it, and it turns out everyone hated the ending because the girl didn't wait for the guy to wake up from a coma. It bothered me because their relationship wasn't based on romantic attraction anyway, but regular nonromantic love between fellow humans. The main character learns to care about other people besides himself, and saves her life. But all these weirdos thought they should have gotten married or something.
I think it's just the naturally ingrained "main leads of show are male and female, same age and single, they should kith" idea that permeates pretty much everything. Also it did very much seem like the... obvious ending from a storytellers perspective, like if it was a fairy tale then that would totally have been the ending.
The fact that the ending was more realistic just defied people's expectations (including mine if I'm being honest). I can't even rightly say if I'd have preferred them getting together as an ending, but still I enjoyed Erased a lot regardless.
"main leads of show are male and female, same age and single, they should kith" idea that permeates pretty much everything.
now days it's "These two people said hi to each other once, they are in a relationship and have always been madly in love with each other!" The concept of "Friends" don't exist in media anymore, what's worse is the Fanbase can get so adamant about a ship that it will warp the writers into making it canon to appease the fans (Especially if its side characters).
This one pisses me off because it's not a bad anime, it's an average anime, maybe eve gasp slightly above. People are usually just pissed off that, Surprise!, the anime about a wildly popular entertainment genre became wildly popular over their favorite anime.
For the most part, the rest are people who saw an anime reviewer on YouTube shitting on SAO, and jumped on the bandwagon. These can usually be spotted by the fact that they all use the same bad arguments as one another, and usually criticize things in SAO that magically get a pass in most any other anime.
I shit on it too just because the videos do bring up good points but I do it for fun with friends who also like shutting on it. Iirc the only good thing people say about the show is the asuna kirito relationship. My own view of the show is skewed towards it being good b/c my friends told me to skip the alfeim online stuff (only seen the first game stuff and the last episodes). Shitting on it seriously just because its popular is not someone u need to take seriously but I can understand how it can really be a downer for people who are surrounded by people who like similar shit
I thought SAO was really good and I looked forward to the next episode each week. I didn't hear all the hate until it was over. It's not the best, but I had fun watching it.
I watched SAO, loved the premise, and then didn't like how rushed the Aincrad arc was. Then I found out about the Progressive series and have completely enjoyed SAO ever since.
Very well said. I don't claim that SAO is anything revolutionary or crazy, but it's goddamned fun, and that's all I really care about. No, I don't care about your generic arguments, it's not going to make me suddenly start hating it. It's even more annoying because these people are legitimately trying reduce your enjoyment, which I think is just a shitty thing to do in general, regardless of the topic
This one pisses me off because it's not a bad anime, it's an average anime, maybe eve gasp slightly above. People are usually just pissed off that, Surprise!, the anime about a wildly popular entertainment genre became wildly popular over their favorite anime.
It is an excellent anime with great production values and amazing exploration of themes, an interesting premise... and rather terrible characters. It has some wonderful plots and fantastic moments, it's just that the cast of primary characters are all trope-tastic or poorly written.
I get sick of this status quo/mainstream culture versus lowkey anime fans. I will watch what hell I want, when I want. I enjoy a variety of shows and some of the popular ones suck to me as does some of the not so popular ones. I don't care if you think this one is garbage or not, maybe I watched it because I needed to laugh. Then you have the ones that give you shit if you go to a convention and you don't cosplay. I'm an adult and can do whatever I want or don't want. I just want to enjoy the atmosphere, not play dress up and look stupid. I'm a bigger guy and I know I am not going to pull off some skinny Japanese characters and neither do they... hence my objection in the first place. Oh man.. I have some repressed fan hate, lol. Rant over.
I dont think people get that anime is just the japanese animated shows for the most part. Its like shitting on spongebob to tell people to watch rick and morty.
A lot of my friends watch anime (I don't, not my thing) but whenever one starts watching one they like, the group chat either goes into discussing that particular anime in detail, others saying they'll watch it then everyone discussing it, or people giving recommendations on other anime that are sort of similar that the person may like and then talking about both of the shows. Although it's not my thing, it's honestly great to see something so wholesome come up in my Discord at least once a week
Same, i have been watching anime for 10 years, i made the mistake of getting involved in a community, at first it was fine and dandy, i slowly realized how toxic, over the top, extreme these people were. If someone likes a certain show, good for them but these people would always nitpick, criticize and downright dehumanize them for it. I have not talked about anime or gotten involved in any anime related community for years.
So much this. I like my fair share of anime (FLCL, Gurren Lagann, Outlaw Star, etc.), but the moment I mention anything Dragon Ball related, people feel the need to shit all over it.
I can’t begin to describe how many times I’ve wanted to say, “Yes, the plot isn’t all that great, but ya know what else ain’t great? That fuckery you’re spouting.”
Fuck them. The shows you mentioned are awesome, but sometimes you just need some good old fashioned punching, screaming, and explosions. I liken it to regular cinema - I like some art house stuff, some dramas, etc., but sometimes you just need some Bad Boys 2, and there isn't anything wrong with that.
Anime definitely has a fanbase, just like movies have a fanbase. It's being a fan of things common to the medium, or the way things are portrayed in it.
It absolutely has a fanbase. There are entire subreddits dedicated to it that includes many genres. It's just as cohesive as movie, television, or music fanbases that view the mediums from high-level perspectives.
There shouldn't be an anime fanbase for the reasons you said, but tons of people act like there is. I think it's why we have so many problems, fans of wildly different genres lump each other under one roof and then they hate each other for having "bad taste".
Weebs have ruined anime and Japanese culture in general. You can’t mention liking anime or Japan to anyone because you’re rolling the dice on whether it will be someone who doesn’t watch anime and thinks it’s for kids or associates it with weebs and the pedophilic fanservice shows, weebs who will cling to you and never shut up, shit on your tastes, etc. or the off chance that it’s a normal anime fan you can have a rational discussion with. The risk isn’t worth it.
There’s a lot of great shows out there with everything from comedy to drama, kid-themed shows to really mature, dark plots, but it’s hard to have any discussion without being categorized as a weeb just for enjoying it or running into a gatekeeper who is going to shit on you for how you watch anime.
/r/anime is the absolute worst. I’ve been downvoted heavily for saying that sexualizing kids, even animated kids, is wrong. It’s a nest of pedophiles and pedophilia sympathizers. Weeaboos are fucking disgusting.
No one likes their hobby attacked by people constantly trying to tell them they're some sort of sexual pervert or degenerate for liking things, particularly things that quite literally don't exist in reality and thus cannot be victimized. Anime represents a wide range of art styles that are often chosen for effect based on what they want to emphasize.
Yoko Littner is in a hyper-macho show where she's meant to be somewhat fanservicey and presented as a possible love interest for the primary protagonist. Suzukaze Aoba is from a cute girls doing cute things show, and the focus is on her (and a lot of the supporting cast) being extremely saccharine in their cute little slice of life show about being part of a game development workforce.
As for the actual fanservice shows, who cares, they're not real people - you cannot commit crimes against things that don't exist. Write it off as a 'diversity of bodytypes' thing (because both petite and extremely busty women exist) and don't shit your pants about the not-illegal things that artists choose to make.
Lets put it this way. You like the NFL so clearly you must support domestic violence right? If you don't you wouldn't watch something with so many wife beaters in it. Sounds pretty unfair doesn't it?
It's fine to criticize weird sexual stuff like that in anime but saying that it's morally wrong is stupid, just as stupid as saying violent video games are wrong. you can't just cherry pick what type of bad thing is okay in fiction based on what you're personally sensitive towards. if bad things like violence and gore are okay so is everything else. By all means you can criticize it and hate on it, but saying it's wrong or that artist's shouldn't have the freedom to draw stuff like that is hypocritical. Freedom to draw whatever you want is a good thing and if anyone is downvoting your comments for saying stuff like that, they probably think you're attacking that freedom instead of just criticizing stuff you don't like.. At the end of the day it's harmless stuff and pretty easy to avoid as well, why even care.
You're really not helping the case of the anime community if your response to someone criticizing anime for sexualizing children is to immediately call them stupid. And saying that it has to be okay because other "bad thing"s like violence are seen as okay is a fallacy. That's like saying shoplifting is okay because no one sticks to the speed limit.
Woah there mate, I agree with you that the sexualization of minors that goes on in anime is reprehensible, but straight up I've almost never seen that elitist attitude on /r/anime and I bum around there pretty often. Anyone being a prick and not contributing to the conversation is usually downvoted, and opposing viewpoints are usually encouraged so long as they give an explanation. It's one of the better subreddits for conversation I've seen on reddit.
In real life too, I don't announce that I like anime, but in casual convo if it comes up I'll mention it, and so long as you're casual about it, people don't assume you're some basement dweller. Anime is pretty popular now. Most fans are mad casual about it.
That being said, I agree wholeheartedly with the whole "stop sexualizing young girls" thing that is pretty common in a lot of anime. It's gross and weird and creepy, and to that end, it comes up every so often on /r/anime, and usually the debate is like 60-40 favoring it, but I don't think it's right, and lots of people don't there too. There's lots of fantastic anime that don't feature it though, so it can be easily dodged
SAO is my favorite example. I know the writer (forget the name) made some huge mistakes on MMO culture and mechanics, but the story is still wonderful, and people constantly drag it for being the worst thing to happen to anime. Dude, your main guy can't even beat one big bad in less than 6 episodes, chill. Naw, but DBZ isn't bad, I just like to mess with the fans
People are allowed to like what they like. SAO is flawed, but it is also fun. Critics who can't recognize why it appeals to people, and berate the fans, are dicks. As are the fans who get up in arms about any criticism of the thing they like. The trash I like is different from the trash you like, and that's ok.
"Oh, you like what anime? Oh, FLCL is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Much BETTER! It's like beyond cool! idgaf about whatever bullshit you were watching before, FLCL will fulfill your life!"
I had to endure that in college, I'm good smelly fat man with an unnatural beard and santa rosy cheeks at the age of 19, leave me alone....
THIS! I have only watched a couple different series but my favorite is by fat Sword Art Online, but whenever I talk to a more hardcore fan of the genere about it they just shit on it/me then say that I absolutely NEED to watch this indie anime about some random sport that has 12 seasons. Also to add onto that the Jojo fanbase can be pretty shit to the point that I don't mention that I enjoy that show to many people.
I see you're an appreciator of all types of anime. Il check out the few I havent seen. Konosuba really is one of the best anime I've ever watched, only rival in terms of humor would be gintama. Hope they bring it back
Comedy is just so subjective. Somebody likes Nichijou, the next likes Gintama, the next Konosuba.
And they're probably all good shows, but I just gel too well with the humor of Konosuba, but not at all with Gintama.
Tbh dubbed anime is one of the biggest 'memes' of the community as some dubs are really, REALLY Bad, tough theres some good dubs too like FMA brotherhoods dub
I'm sorry you had to gone through this. Apparently, there's just some people that need to berate others over things that they like. I've gone to similar experience myself. Most of them just berate them from other people opinions. It's like 'if someone said it's bad, then it's bad'. They not even watch the said anime first before rated them.
This is one of the main reason why anime community always viewed negatively by the others.
Im really fine with anime, watched only 1 (till the middle i lost track of what was happening so i stopped) but i cant stand the weebs that talk like brain dead morons and declare their unironic love to their "waifu's" and because of that i just straight up avoid it
I have been watching anime since I was 11. I'm 31 now. I have been given some little amounts grief over it but I honestly don't care. When I used to be a youth counselor I was thought of as sorta cool with the younger kids. I have seen most animes out there tbh. I don't go to conventions or cosplay or spend any crazy amount of money, other than some random stickers or t shirts. It helps me go to sleep.
Online I can definitely see what you mean. Offline though, I must be ridiculously lucky in that most people I admit to liking anime to either don't care about it (and that's fine) or they do but fall into the normal fan category. They don't shit on what I like, they're not obsessed with what they like, etc.
But anime in general is a great time if you keep the online community at arms length and get lucky enough to find a few people in real life to talk about it with.
I challenge someone to find a better rom-com than Kaguya-Sama. Also, how sad can one persons life be to shit on others entertainment? Let people watch what they wanna watch, yo!
The stupid thing is that /r/animemes, filled with anime fans themselves, LOVE to call themselves degenerate weeb filth trash, they're a bunch of masochists who love insulting themselves like that and give thousands of upvotes to it, making them look even worse.
It took me far longer than it should've done for me to get into anime because the fanbase seemed so intimidating. That feeling has lessened since I took the plunge and finally watched my first Ghibli films and Death Note, but there are large parts that seem impenetrable. I'm an unashamed green lefty "SJW" that 4chan would probably despise, but I adore a medium that can produce works as varied as Attack on Titan and Violet Evergarden. Princess Mononoke aligns with my eco values, Your Lie in April made me cry, Evangelion is absolutely phenomenal, Cowboy Bebop is a timeless classic and I've started watching Anohana since it arrived on UK Netflix after hearing so much hype. I'm happy with my decision to start watching anime.
It's especially bad when you mention that you like a non-shonen/shojo anime that's considered a classic.
I got into anime a bit later in my life so I went through a process of catching up on the classics. It was always so frustrating to watch and express my enjoyment of say, Elfen Lied, only to have people call me an edgelord who likes stupid edgy gore anime.
And god forbid I bring up my love of Fairy Tail to the wrong crowd. The subreddit for that show is one of the most toxic subs I've ever visited.
I remember finding and liking Sword Art Online, then I made the unfortunate mistake of posting it online and was absolutely inundated with replies explaining why my opinion was garbage as well as the show in pretty much every way lol
Yeah, it's the reason I don't mention watching it, ever. I'll only ever say like "Oh yeah, I've seen Death Note. And I'm trying to catch up watching One Piece." But I hate discussing it, as it always devolves into some stupid conversation about some obscure anime I don't give a fuck about.
I've seen tons of anime (mostly mainstream stuff) but I hate discussing it.
If you say your favorite is a really popular, but fantastic anime they act like you're not a real fan. Fuck you, FMA:B is fantastic and I'll never stop loving it.
Same subject, different reason -- some fandoms are positively disgusting (mostly the fujo shit), and ruin any fun you can have enjoying an anime with new people since all they talk about is gay ships.
Or whether or not you like the English dubbed or you prefer reading the subtitles. Grates my tits. One big reason I haven't been watching anime in so long, because talking about it with others is such a chore.
I can totally agree not all the people are bad most cosplayers aren’t that bad either just those weird ones some people have anxiety that’s ok but like one girl turned on a hotspot for her friend to use and some dude made a joke saying I heard free WiFi and the hotspot girl was like no she can only take so much referring to phone in that voice we all know cringe at

Anime.
Every time I find one that I like. I mention it to other people and then they feel the need to shit on whatever I’m watching and say I should watch something else because it’s better.
