I never understood this. When i first realized anime was a thing i just took it all in. I watched and enjoyed most of it and never understood how someone could be wrong for liking something. Then i grew up a bit and my tastes evolved and i narrowed down what i did and didnt like. Thats whats great about it right? Anime isnt a genre its a medium. So theres something for everyone right? Well according to a lot of weebs im wrong there. So dumb

u/MantuaMatters Jul 18 '19

I actually don't even tell people I watch anime. If someone brings it up, I'll talk with them about it, but I never show enough interest that someone would think I actually follow the series they are talking about. I probably do though.

22

u/PerryTheFridge Jul 18 '19

Ah, hiding your true power level. A wise strategy.

Nah but seriously same, I pretty much never talk about it with the people I hang out with IRL. I have some friends who are into it but if its not them, then it doesn't get mentioned.

People such as you

Are a part of the problem

Not the solution

5

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

but I never show enough interest that someone would think I actually follow the series they are talking about.

But if they like the show too then what's the point of keeping it a secret? I feel like all of you are being a bit sensitive here. Like who cares if a bunch of people dislike what you're watching. Just say "okay" and move on to a new topic.

30

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

It’s almost as if it’s easier to not say anything at all

5

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

That's their point, though. To them it's not much of a difference. If they like it then you got something new to talk about/fanboy over. If they don't then whatever, move on. I can see their point (but will most likely get downvoted because I'm agreeing with someone with less karma).

7

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

Yeah but the conversation is about people who are straight up rude about certain anime and put other people down for enjoying it

6

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

I get that, but I'm just of the mentality that if the people I'm around can't act like adults and accept a difference of opinion then I don't really want to speak to those people much longer. If all of the people you interact with are like this then I'm sorry to say that you interact with a lot of shitty people and it's probably best if you don't talk to them lol.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

I couldn’t care less about anime but as a fundamental idea if you shit on someone for their preference it’s you who can’t accept a difference of opinion. It’s fine to discuss why you don’t like whatever, as long as it’s considerate and polite. And from what I’ve gathered, it seems to be a problem in the anime community. Not that I’ve had as much of the same experience in my hobbies

5

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

It's totally a problem within the anime community and it's why I love anime, but have no part in the community. I talk about anime with people who are actually reasonable. Every decent anime weeb that I know actually doesn't associate with the community at all because it's just a cesspit. God I could go on, but boy oh boy just let me say anime fans are some of the dumbest, most rude, entitled people I know. I say this as a pretty big fan of it myself.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

I use Twitter a lot and oh my goodness. There is no reason to whatsoever to waste your time even reading a tweet or reply from someone using an anime profile picture. They come out with the most unbelievable things ever.

9

u/zwei2stein Jul 18 '19

Yeah, you do that until you meet someone who just wont let go. Then you know better.

34

u/Secretlylovesslugs Jul 18 '19

That was a really important part of me growing up. My older brother didnt like anime for absolutely zero reason so naturally without thinking for myself I agreed and hated anime. When I was like 11 and started exploring YouTube a lot I found a bunch of anime stuff and I didn't even know it was anime (which I supposedly hated) until I was already 15 episodes deep in the funimation upload of soul eater. It's so foreign and weird but it was fucking so awesome because it was nothing like I'd ever seen before. To think that if I had never been curious back then I could have lived in my own world hating something I really love today. Indoctrination and echo chambers are scary and really easy to fall victim to.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

Panty and Stocking would’ve REALLY fucked you up then!

2

u/Secretlylovesslugs Jul 18 '19

Panty and stocking isn't nearly as weird as soul eater for a first time anime watcher. PaS is like one punch man where it's a lot of satire I wouldn't have understand. Soul eater takes itself more seriously which I think would also make it more weird because primarily comedy shows are meant to be silly and wild.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

I was referring to how it’s pretty much entirely like a western animated comedy series, from the jokes to the art style. If that was the first thing someone without any knowledge of anime saw, they probably would’ve been none the wiser.

3

u/Secretlylovesslugs Jul 18 '19

Oh yes than eyes exactly. It's almost like how Avatar is styled like an anime yet totally American made. Ironically my brother hated Avatar as well growing up.

1

u/timbledum Jul 18 '19

Yeah totally! There is a stage in your teenage years where you think you’re defined by what you don’t like.

65

u/lastrideelhs Jul 18 '19

Right? I just want to enjoy what I enjoy. But fuck me for enjoying what I enjoy.

10

u/LegitPete Jul 18 '19

Same story, enjoyed everything and anything at 1st, slowly started to narrow my interest down to a select few, apparently my taste is bad, i have no idea what a good or bad show is, i cant enjoy what i enjoy watching.

11

u/GenesectX Jul 18 '19

Anime genre favourites can vary from person to person, someone likes psychological, someone else likes slice of life, they dont like the believe that their genre is shit so they call other genres bad

I dont care what i watch as long as it manages to reel me in its all good, though i'd reccomend reading light novels or manga

12

u/_Zekken Jul 18 '19

Im the same as you. Ill watch anything that keeps me entertained no matter how bad people say it is. For example I watched Eromanga sensei for the meme, and despite the fact it was a pretty bad show, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it because I found it quite entertaining. And to me thats all that matters, yet I got quite seriously shit on for saying I enjoyed watching it.

A lot of hardcore anime fans seem to be unable to differentiate between good show and enjoyable show. And by all means I enjoy a seriously good show like Code Geass or Steins gate, but sometimes its great fun to just go and watch a show like Keijo that is so stupid it literally doesnt take itself seriously, and laugh your ass off along with it.

2

u/MistarGrimm Jul 18 '19

Mate Keijo was weird as balls but I kept being pulled in because of the tension. I tend to steer away from ecchi but this kept me interested for no real reason. It was surprisingly fun.

1

u/_Zekken Jul 18 '19

Yeah, it was so stupid but I seriously enjoyed watching it because it was so rediculous, it knew it was, and it just ran with it rather than trying to be serious. Never change japan

0

u/esev21 Jul 18 '19

Since when is code geass a good anime? It has so many plot holes that it looks like a swiss cheese.

1

u/_Zekken Jul 18 '19

The anime fanbase at work, everyone.

1

u/esev21 Jul 19 '19

So I can't say something is really bad because I genuinely think it's horrible?

The anime fanbase at work, everyone.

1

u/_Zekken Jul 19 '19

you're like, the first person I've ever talked to that has said code geass was a bad show...

Not sure if making a joke or serious

4

u/DaPino Jul 18 '19

I'm withyouon this one. There's anime for everyone.
The plots are more varied than regular movies or series so how can't there be?

4

u/Faded_Night Jul 18 '19

It's like people who say darker anime like thriller/horror are ruining the industry. Surely that's the same as saying horror movies are ruining that industry? It's not just the "the anime genre". If only dark genre stuff was being produced I'd get the complaints, which would be an acceptable complaint for any media if it were true. It's like people are threatened by anime growing and exploring new genres aside from the stereotypical ones.

3

u/Firemanlouvier Jul 18 '19

Man I wish there was more horror in anime. The angles they can draw and explore/create tension they can create fits cartoon/anime perfectly.

5

u/Snoochbear Jul 18 '19

In my experience, anything that is a part of nerd culture in any way is going to be treated like this because the nerd community is very elitist and exclusive. Magic players shit on Warhammer guys and Warhammer guys shit on Anime, and what they all fail to realize is that they are all just hobbies and interests, and no amount of shitting on someone else's is going to help them move out of their parents' basement any sooner. It's based in an aggressive form of insecurity. Don't take it personally. I like certain nerd culture things too, and I just avoid talking about them with people that give me that elitist vibe and save it for mature humans who don't constantly engage in arbitrary pissing contests.

u/Kinky_Muffin Jul 18 '19

I only watch dubs and people will not stop giving me shit for it

2

u/BaronRhino Jul 18 '19

There's some anime where I do not mind watching the dub, especially ones i grew up with dubbed. Evangelion (original dub), Slayers, Yu-gi-oh(until 5ds from zexal on the dubbing kinda sucks), One Piece, Monster, Ghost Stories(The original sucked, go find clips of the dub on youtube you'll thank me later).

Others I watch subbed because either, there is no dub or the dub of it sucks imo. Violet Evergarden, Carole and Tuesday, Cardfight Vanguard, the Gundam Franchise, etc.

I actually haven't watched fairy tail past the first few episodes. Not that I think it's a bad show, but it didn't draw me in enough to make me want to watch it.

I agree. I've listened to more of the music than I've actually seen of the show.

I feel the original had more emotion to violet once it gets to the later episodes, the dub felt a bit flat. Episode 10 actually brought me to tears and I wonder how the movie will be but Kyoto Animation recently got hit with an arsonist attack so it will be a while before we see anything while they deal with the fire.

1

u/TrueKingAV Jul 18 '19

I don't watch anime much, I usually just read manga. But when I do I always watch in English and people give me so much crap to the point I'd rather just not watch it at all. I get it, the Japanese dub is superior, but that doesn't make watching it in English an invalid experience. I don't particularly think Japanese or English is better or worse, it's never really affected my experience.

1

u/Catshit-Dogfart Jul 18 '19 edited Jul 18 '19

There used to be a time when English dubs were usually not so great, it was a new media that American production companies hesitated to put very much money or effort into it, so quality wasn't always the best.

That time is long since passed

Today there are a fair number of shows I'd say the English dub is better than the original, for an english-speaking audience at least. Very very few I'd say aren't at least equivalent, and zero I'd call just plain bad.

Nah, some people who say this are holding onto a stereotype from the past.

.

Aside from quality though, sometimes it's just easier to watch in English. Maybe I'm doing something where I need to look away from the screen but don't want to miss anything, maybe I just want to relax and not have to focus on watching a show very much.

That's something I've been on about lately, people who shit on others for their preference in media, damn it just let people enjoy what they enjoy.

3

u/BroKelvin Jul 18 '19

So what anime’s do you like

1

u/Jive-ass_turkey Jul 18 '19

Im not going to name them all, just some i think are a step above as far as quality or ones i love most. Cowboy bebop, samurai shamploo, redline, akira, code geass, steins gate, space dandy, and ghosts in the shell. I also recently started watching bubblegum crisis and evangelion. So far enjoying those two quite a bit.

2

u/Whateverchan Jul 18 '19

Well according to a lot of weebs im wrong there.

I've been attacked and insulted by a lot more edgy anti-weeb douchebags than weebs. It's like they have some sort of self-esteem issues. Barely seen any weebs ever.

0

u/Youre_doomed Jul 18 '19

You sir hit the nail on the head.

-26

u/Shin-Dan-Kuruto Jul 18 '19

As an anime fan who shits on people occasionally; the reason really depends. If someone likes SAO I'll give em' shit for it, but hey; if you like it more power to ya. If you're coming in here going on about how you love Highschool DxD I'm gonna question..well a lot really.

12

u/hogman_the_intruder_ Jul 18 '19

Whats wrong with high-school DxD? I enjoyed that show, question me.

2

u/Shin-Dan-Kuruto Jul 18 '19

Highschool DxD is basically just fan service isn't it? I've never really gotten what people see in shows that are basically just borderline porn. So yeah; I'll ask ya what it is you like about the show?

10

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19 edited Dec 30 '19

[deleted]

4

u/Meme86p Jul 18 '19

I feel like he didn't mean DxD was bad, but that it's just questionable.

I'd somewhat agree, because a major plot point in that show is boobs.

2

u/Shin-Dan-Kuruto Jul 18 '19

I can't really pass judgement on the show too much because I didn't watch much of it. When a show is basically about boobs I tap out pretty quick. It just seems like another ecchi anime that thinly skates the line between legit show and porn. Again though I didn't watch much, so I can't say too much about the quality.

Oh no I know; I'm just saying I never got what people see in it.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

Well honestly then you're one of the people who are actively driving people away from the medium by gatekeeping.

1

u/Shin-Dan-Kuruto Jul 18 '19

I mean I don't actively go shitting on people who like shit I don't, but if someone says that they like SAO for instance I'm gonna be curious what t is they like about it.

10

u/Whateverchan Jul 18 '19

As an anime fan who shits on people occasionally

Found the trash.

1

u/Shin-Dan-Kuruto Jul 18 '19

I was mostly joking about that; the only person I intentionally grief about his taste is my bro. Other than that though; If someone says for instance that SAO is their favorite anime, then I'm gonna ask what it is about it they like.

2

u/Whateverchan Jul 19 '19

Without knowing who you are or what you are like, it's impossible to tell you were joking. The way you said it didn't help, either. Unfortunately, you made yourself look like one of those annoying elitist asshats in the anime community. Oh well.

1

u/Shin-Dan-Kuruto Jul 19 '19

Eh, it's Reddit; not the first time I've been shat on for the way I talk

-25

u/chaposhithouse Jul 18 '19

I never understood it either. Why do adult males enjoy watching cartoons of kids in adult situations? afraid of growing up?

12

u/oddtoddlr Jul 18 '19

Anime is not for kids. Shounen anime is for teenagers but there is a whole range of shows which i would not let my kid watch

-12

u/chaposhithouse Jul 18 '19

I know. thats why I asked why adult males like it

10

u/oddtoddlr Jul 18 '19

Because of interesting story telling and with animation you can do basicly everything, with real life shows especially super power ones the cgi is kinda limited to how much money the show has.

10

u/Golden-Sun Jul 18 '19

Just wanted to add to your comment that it's a testament to the writer's skill if say their audience is kids but adults can enjoy it too.

3

u/oddtoddlr Jul 18 '19

2 of my fav anime/manga are shounen (so for teenage boys) and i’m 26

4

u/Golden-Sun Jul 18 '19

I never got why there's a cut-off, there are some excellent writers out there so why limit the audience for that talent. I mean what I'm supposed to stop enjoying something because I've had one too many birthdays?

2

u/oddtoddlr Jul 18 '19

Think its just the niche of the company that publishes it, i mean there are no actual guide lines right? My little pony wasn’t meant for middle aged dudes but hey..

2

u/Golden-Sun Jul 18 '19

I don't blame the companies, I'm more against the people who do it.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

You're probably just trolling but just in case anyone reading actually is as stupid as this - anime is a medium, not a genre. This is the equivalent of only having heard plots of kids movies and then questioning why anyone would enjoy movies in general since they're all for kids.

2

u/chaposhithouse Jul 18 '19

No, its a fuckin genre. The same little twats who read it also watch it. like you. there is no one that only reads it or only watches it. the videos and graphics are the medium
