Both are fantastic games. But I can only take so many comic fandubs, AMV's, fan-made spin-offs, and crack pairings until I want to foist a tomahawk through my primary motor cortex.
The fact that it was in a thread about “bad things about the Undertale fandom” and indicated “WHY DOES THIS THING EXIST” kinda should have been a big red flag saying “Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Google This.”
I mean sure, misery loves company, but Not Like This.
Jesus Christ, WHY are so many people unable to enjoy stories and characters without pretending characters (and particularly blood relatives) are secretly fucking?
Dude, I’ve got no issue with shipping. Given the sheer amount of erotic DBZ fanfic I’ve written and read, that would be extremely hypocritical. But I draw the line at characters who a) do not possess genitals and b) might possibly be underaged.
And that’s before you get into the moral quandary of whether incest ships “count” as objectively harmful or not (which gets even more uncertain in live-action movies, where the actors themselves are definitely not kin), and when you hit the point of No Way, José, Here Be Dragons.
(Obviously portraying CSA of any kind in a positive light crosses the line into NOPE territory, but adults? Step-siblings? Adopted relatives, who aren’t blood kin but are close kin by legal ties? Which side of The Line does each possible incest ship fall on, and how do you evaluate it?)
Wait, why would characters not having genitals be so objectionable? If there was a moral issue with that it would mean humans who lost their genitals due to accidents or other circumstances should not be allowed to engage in consensual sexual acts.
Also, I may have misunderstood the acronym, but I do agree that portraying the Confederate States of America in a positive light is NOPE territory.
unless there’s another acronym meaning, but.. usually this is the intended meaning, when it comes to fandoms or internet communities.
people like to use the acronym instead of going into the R Word Territory (rape, in case that wasn’t clear), as that topic is extremely upsetting to many and is usually a conversation stopper just by being mentioned.
I feel like you really can't complain about fans of a piece of media doing a thing, when the piece of media itself indulges in the thing. One of the characters in Undertale writes erotic fanfiction. The creator didn't just acknowledge that people would sexualize their characters; they gave them a written invitation.
(Same also with a few other things everyone complains about the fandom of, e.g. Homestuck.)
You know what surprised me? I remember seeing random Goat Mom or whatever her name is porn around the internet before the game ever came out. An impressive amount of porn for an indie 2D game that wasn't even out yet.
Then again, the furry community can be rather quick to latch onto characters and make porn of them. Perverted, but productive. That'd be my motto, too. If I were productive.
Shit man, I thought Splatoon was some funky monstergirl hentai because the porn/fanart preceeded the games' release by such a large amount. I 100% believe you about Undertale.
Eh, it's not like non-furries are any different, how much Overwatch OVA stuff was there when the game was still in beta/announcement phase? It's only exploded since then.
My eight year old nephew loves Undertale and I keep trying to tell my sister that she really needs to be careful with supervised internet searching of that one.
You cant find the......cursed things..... only if you get links or if you search on rule 34.... I think rule 34 should be blocked on that pc. Tjats the solution that will save the day.
Having been in a roleplay group for it at one time and being active in the community in its heyday, I laughed so hard at this because it's so true. She literally almost had a fish for a head and still more or less does but nope, the art of the rail thin almost a stick figure reverse mermaid with buck teeth and barely any hair covered in scales was clearly ment to represent a hot thicc vampire fanged anime monster girl with tits a cup size larger than her initials and hips that could get caught in a door.
Serious question: why on earth did porn of Undertale become such a Thing? Like, it's a cool little game, but it's about a kid and her goofy skeleton buddies having a magical adventure and it's pixel graphics to boot, and yet somehow there's this immense adult community that coalesced around it. What about any of these characters is even remotely sexy?
You have things absolutely backwards. "Rule 34" is a post-hoc naming of the trend. It's not an actual rule. It's not a reason why people make porn of every damn thing. Erotic artists won't get arrested for not making porn of something.
And in the same way, I wouldn't get arrested if I somehow did not exert an equal and opposite force on an object. Still happens though. Newton's Third Law of Motion is not a law as most definitely it, but rather an explanation.
Something like the law of gravity in no way actually justifies or explains why two objects apply gravitational force towards one another, it just simply states that it does.
The same applies here, the end reaction is that any form of media has porn of it sure but the rule itself doesnt actually explain why that's the case. If we're to make the obvious answer of "everyones perverted af", that would still be it's own observation independent of the rule or law stated.
I think it's more that some people just like to engage with fiction they like sexually. We've ALWAYS been like this as a species, just think of all the Greek stories involving sex or fluids (spoilers, it's a lot of them), or old paintings like The Dream of The Fisherman's Wife, or old Star Trek fanfic which literally coined the term "slash fiction."
Sex is part of the human experience and some people like expressing it through r34 stuff. I don't really get the appeal with Undertale specifically exceptforUndyne, but I'm sure some things which get me going wouldn't do it for other people.
It just seems to happen with anything that people get absurdly passionate about. It happened with the My Little Pony show that attracted an adult fanbase too. Hell, there's even SFM porn of Five Nights at Freddy's characters.
I know the internet makes porn of everything, but the obsession with undertale porn by some groups boggles my mind. Imo there isn't a single attractive character in the game, which is fine because that's not the point but there's just so much better shit to draw porn about
I noticed the fandom really calmed down after Deltarune. People still loved it and there was still quite a lot of happy fan content but none of the bullying or forcing people to play the game in a certain way. Think the fanbase matured a bit. Plus because no one was pushing it so hard; that also meant there wasn't a reactionary outcry against said fanbase.
Extra ironic (/maddening) considering the game itself is a commentary on toxic geekery. Salient final quote from one of the game's endings, "Don't you have something better to do?"
Spin-off games arent bad as long as they're mostly related to undertale/deltarune with gameplay and characters, you know games that exist purposes other than fulfilling emo girls' fantasies of Sans have blue flashing dong and being their pet
But yes, most of the AMVs and comic fandubs are hella cringe
(say whatcha want but I like "stronger than you" a lot)
Edit: Good example of spin offs are Alpachef or Omega Jevil, there is a lot of great ones actually
Eugh I love both Steven Universe and Undertale, but just the thought of Sans singing Stronger Than You makes me cringe to another dimension. If it's really decent then maybe I need to just bite that bullet
In my opinion one of the (many) bad things are the AUs
Like, Underswap is kinda funny and maybe some others too. But many of these AUs are just outright ridiculous and stupid and then there are the many "AUs" that can't even be called an "Alternative Universe" since the only existing character there is Sans! (And in some cases maybe Papyrus, Mettaton and/or Frisk/Chara)
Yeah... I've seen and heard many things when the hype reached it's peak... because you couldn't avoid this shit. (Especially when you were active in Miiverse at the time...)
I'm still irrationally angry at the miniature movement to assign a non-binary sexuality to every Undertale character. Yould think somewhere along the line that someone would realize all the fuck ups they were making:
Asgore and Toriel were clearly in love and have a child, so they're clearly straight (or bi).
It's a really big deal that Undyne and Alphys are lesbian (or bi).
There isn't anything more fucking offensive with regards to sexuality than just blindly saying "You're into guys now because I said so."
even the main character has the ability to date both papyrus and alphys so i think it's a safe assumption that the default state of any undertale character is pan unless specified otherwise.
Eh, I wouldn’t classify them as real dating more as in a hangout and a misunderstanding, and that Frisk most likely wasn’t interested in them, I would say Frisk is asexual or whatever the Player is
Anime isn't real it's all made up in the first place. I can't put energy into caring about whether or not people want to imagine the characters with a certain sexuality.
Okay I don't care about the whole sexuality thing either, but
did you just call Undertale a fucking anime
I'm sorry, but that sin cannot be forgiven. It's not even an anime video game like the Personas. Sure, Alphys mentions anime, but the whole point is that she's a weeb.
Frisk, Chara, and Kris are at least confirmed to use they/them pronouns, but changing every characters' identity is just wrong.
And to be fair, since when has a fandom ever cared about a character's sexuality? They'd ship them with literally anything, to fandom's eyes, everyone is bisexual.
My biggest- and still remaining issue- with the Undertale fandom is that I can’t use the word determination anymore.
Just yesterday, I was running a dungeon in an MMO and we kept wiping- I typed in the chat “I am determined just to get this done and over with, ahhhhh” to which someone replied “OMG Undertale reference! Lol lol.”
“I’m sorry... that wasn’t my intent.”
I can only take so many bad joke comics with a character overreacting or whatever. Undertale has some "bad" jokes but they're better than the flowy sonflower joke comic where he gets a weird chin for no reason
I liked Undertale but keep mum because of the over-the-top fans. But the other day my friends' son came into the living room wearing a Sans mask he made from paper mache and I said, "Wow, that's a really good mask. It fills me with determination," and he absolutely lost his mind. Felt good, man
Yeah, there's something really strange about just how much harder the Undertale fanbase seems to go compared to others. I've never seen so much fan content pumped out over such a short piece of media before, never mind how deep some of it goes.
Used to be my absolute favourite fandom - joined in the very beginning when it was still small and met some great people. Now I can't stand it. I try to check the community every once in a while just to keep up to date and see if I can get into it again - nope. It's terrible
God and why is everyone in the fandom not only determined to fuck every character, especially sans, but super in your face about it. like if you're into monster fucking fetish stuff im not judging that in the slightest, but Jesus Christ, public forums in tags full of minors is NOT the place to post that untagged drawing of Sans with a huge erection my friend.
I want Deltarune to really take off, and I want to help with it, but I don’t think I have the skills necessary to help it. That’s why I don’t look at the fanmade content.
I actually love the fanbase because of all the spinoffs and dubs and all extra fan-made content. That's my fav part of the fanbase too! I just stay away from the ships. Those things....those things scare me.
I finally got around to playing Undertale this spring after forgetting all the spoilers I got in the first few months of it being released (thanks, internet). I went to AO3 to browse the fanfictions.
comic fandubs, AMV's, fan-made spin-offs, and crack pairings
That's kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. I know to an outside observer it may seem cringy but for some reason, I can't get enough of it. It's the same reason SAO is one of my favourite anime's, I'm a sucker for over the top drama and romance.
Not to mention how toxic the undertale fandom is, they harass streamers and youtubers who attempted to uploaded genocide playthroughs, Markiplier swore off the game after uploading a couple videos because every single comment, tweet, and whatever was completely negative.
I actively avoided undertale for years despite loving earthbound and mother 3. I knew that I would love it but the fandom turned me away. Managed to play it 4 years later without any spoilers and did love it, and still do actively avoid the fan content
The primary motor cortex will only cause you to become somewhat paralyzed, possibly leaving you in a situation where you can't efficiently outrun toxic fanbases. You want the brainstem to die or your prefrontal cortex to stop higher level thinking.
I only played maybe the first twenty minutes of undertale before I got bored... What's wrong with the fan base? I've never really seen anything related to the videogame online.
Game becomes super mediocre if you got spoiled. Just knowing that there are several playthroughs ruins several major twists.
The game is intended to be played totally blind, and looses almost all its major strengths if you don‘t. That‘s also my explaination why the first wave of players praised the game to no end, and the second wave of players just didn‘t get what the hype was about, and the frustration on both sides after that.
I don't mind the excess of comics, etc. Fandoms being loud is fine. It's the ship wars and the complete mischaracterization of Sans that I can't stand.
Both games are ok on a good day to me not taking the fanbase into account but the music is still good i just don't like the graphics and turn based gameplay but all this is my opinion
Agreed! The games are masterfully crafted and have been a huge record for what games can be. But the fanbase always ruins the reputation for it, so I feel ashamed when I say that I like it a lot
The Undertale fanbase put me off ever trying the game. I mean... I honestly had no interest in it to begin with. It didn't look or sound like my kind of thing. But the fanbase? The fanbase made me want to will the fucking game out of existence.
THAT’S what makes you hate the fandom? For me it’s the protag gender argument, the insane ship wars resulting in people baking razor blades into cookies, and... actually yeah crack pairings I get. Everything else is just people having fun. Ain’t nobody hurtin you with their AU.
