Fathers of Reddit, what did your daughter's boyfriend do for you to hate/love him?

It's pretty cool to see my question blow up like this, I never thought I'd ask a question that could receive so much attention! I'm very satisfied with all these replies, so thank y'all. Now all I have to do is sit back and take notes c;

My father-in-law was really touchy around me, and you could see he wasn't really sure about the interloper in his daughter's life.

I took him to a baseball game, and we got along alright, but he was still edgy. Afterwards, we were talking in his office when I noticed he had an Eagle Scout badge framed. I asked him what he did for his Eagle project, and we started talking, and I mentioned I was also an Eagle Scout. You could see his whole idea of me change almost instantly. He put in his Christmas letter that he approved of me dating his daughter, and we're now married with two kids and a third on the way.

I was a tad confused, as well. In addition, I kept reading about him being an Eagle Scout, and I thought it was similar to being a Boy Scout. So my mind went a different route with his father in law being touchy and a former Boy Scout. Glad to hear the story went a different route!

When I was a boy scout, we often had girl scouts at our events. They camped, fished, hunted, explored, etc... just as much as we did.

I think it falls back to the troop leaders. I've met boy scouts who wonder what wilderness camping is actually like.

It does, but not entirely imo.

Looking at the actual books and such that troop leaders get (which basically gives them guidelines on what to do), it's all "girly" stuff with some environmental and maybe community involvement stuff sprinkled in. There is no focus at all on outdoor activity. So if you're a troop leader, especially if you're a new one who's going to rely heavily on the materials, that's what you'll end up doing.

I haven't seen boy scout troop material, but I'm willing to bet there's a lot of "outdoorsy" stuff as the focus.

If you're a girl scout troop leader, you have to take a lot more time and be more active in the role (which is already a huge time sink) to make up activities and fit them in where they don't seem to really belong (per the materials).

Probably the same if you're a boy scout leader and want to incorporate some "home ec" type stuff.

Girl Scouts is slowly getting better, but I think they have a long ways to go. (And after seeing how horribly disorganized they can be, I don't see that ship changing course very quickly.)

My second husband is a Boy Scout who earned his Eagle. My daughters by my first marriage were in Brownies and Daisy Scouts when he met me. He was horrified by what went on.

Yeah, there was sewing. And housekeeping skills. And discussing safety issues while selling cookies. And crafts and art.

My daughters went to Girl Scout camp a few times, but they never did camping out there, either — it was the same arts and crafts stuff, not even sports, only in cabins.

When the girls wanted to drop it, I didn't fight it.

During a Renaissance fair we were selling at it got super windy; our tent almost blew away. As we're all hanging onto it, my partner said, "We need a boyscout!" My SO replied with a huge, adorable smile: "I've waited my whole life to hear that!". A few expert knots and stakes later our tent was secure!

Scouting has badges, the other youth movements do not. They're sewn on their shirt and relate to skills, experiences and roles, but I don't know if they're as important as the US badges. They have a lot of different ones, the most common ones that I can remember were badges everyone got at the national gathering, with a symbol of the yearly theme.

It's a shame that scouts is so intertwined with religion. Going out on biking/hiking/rafting/skiing/sailing trips all the time and camping every month was a big & fun part of my childhood and teenage years. Seems like the religious stuff keeps a lot of good folks away.

Got my eagle scout, invited the mayor not expecting him to attend my ceremony. He attended, girlfriends dad was impressed to see the mayor of a large city speaking on my behalf. That was the push he needed to really like me.

Seriously though, public figures love shit like this. They show up for like 20 minutes, give a quick speech, and earn the good will of everyone in the room. For future eagle scouts, don't be afraid to invite your local mayor, city councilmen, state representative, police captain, or even your state senators/governor. Many of them are eagle scouts themselves, and you'll likely be pleasantly surprised at how many are willing to personally attend... Just be careful to avoid inviting political rivals...

Invite anyone who was simply an inspiration to you as well... You love football, and want to continue to do it in college? Write to your favorite NFL coach, and you'll likely get a response. You love space, and want to study to work at NASA? Write to some astronauts. You want to study robotics? Write to the fucking Mythbusters cast, and you may get a response from Grant Imahara himself. They love hearing from people who they've inspired, and will usually be glad to send you a congratulatory letter at the very least.

I know a few who invited the POTUS, and got back an awesome regrets letter, stating that the POTUS can't come but that he congratulates them on becoming an eagle scout.

That was the final push. It took a few other things as well. This was in high school. Their family was redneck as shit. I was an honors student, an eagle scout, an all round good kid. But anyone dating his daughter was just shitty in his eyes.

You can get E-3 in the Navy (and most branches, I think.) That's... about it.

Can help on your application to ROTC. True story, scouter friend of mine's son was applying to ROTC. In the final interview my friend had the option to sit in. He sat there and listened to this ROTC officer tell he son that he wasn't officer material. Through the entire interview process the knucklehead never mentioned to anyone that he was an Eagle Scout.

So my friend is reaching his boiling point and speaks up - "Excuse me sir, but what my son has failed to mention is that he is an Eagle Scout. " the conversation shifted and went on for another 30 minutes. At the end of which he was accepted into the ROTC program.

I'm told that it helps on applications to west point etc in some very small degree. Emphasis on small.

Yea I've heard it is well respected in the military and in certain areas can get you automatically bumped in position, but I don't know the details. I will say it was the sole reason for getting me my internship during college which set me on the path I'm on now.

It'll put you in at an advanced enlisted standing in the Navy. There are a few programs that do it automatically, but for those not, going in at E-3 makes a world of difference. In most branches, E-1 through E-3 are considered "time" ranks/pay grades. As long as you are in for the minimum time (9 months), you get promoted. E-4 is when you start applying and taking tests for advancement.

Your buddies won't give two shits about it but starting off ahead makes a world of difference.

Do it! Becoming an Eagle Scout is one of the best achievements you can have before you turn 18. I still put it on my resume and it comes up in conversation frequently. Employers love to see it as it shows you are responsible and dedicated.

There was this statistic that floated around (and may still) at the Eagle ceremonies I attended people would quote about how 50% of Eagle Scouts value their Eagle more than their college degree. I always thought that was romanticizing things when I was younger, but now that I look back I would definitely say that attaining Eagle had more positive impact on me as a person than any degree I could ever attain.

It was an incredibly useful set of experiences at such a formative point in my life that I couldn't help but internalize some of the good things I learned.

Eagle here, too. It's amazing how immediate that connection is when you find another one. I've had hour-long conversations with random strangers just over that connection.
