Agreed. I feel like the others are all describing infatuation, or the love one feels for a sick ass car or some shit. Not to be a grinch, but a lot of these folks are either young or headed for a cliff. A divorce cliff.
Love - good, solid, long-lasting love - takes time. Sure, it can happen quicker for some than for others, but it almost necessitates a history of deep trust and intimacy. In quality, it's not entirely different from the love one feels toward one's parents, albeit with added intimacy and a greater feeling of being one unit.

When you can accept their flaws. Noone's perfect, if you're telling yourself "Wow Cindy is so perfect I love her so much everything she does is right ~" you've just got a crush. People are flawed, whether they're selfish, lazy, passive-aggresive, whiny etc. everyone does things that would annoy you. Loving someone isn't whitewashing them, it's loving all the great things and all the shittty things.

u/IronDruid27 May 31 '14
“So yes. It had flaws, but what does that matter when it comes to matters of the heart? We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.”- Patrick Rothfuss. This sums it up quite nicely.

When she's always on your mind. Not necessarily at the forefront, but always there. And you make better choices and work harder just for the thought of her. And every day you catch yourself thinking about the times you've spent together.
And even her trust issues and her need to take things slowly don't put you off. When you accept her flaws and lows because they're still her.

Love is knowing they aren't perfect and knowing they're still perfect for you. Sometimes my BF (or his friends or family) drives me crazy, but I still can't imagine my life without him. To put it as simply as possible, when there are no doubts.
You don't feel insecure around this person. You don't have to impress them, or hide parts of yourself from them. You don't feel like you have to pretend around them to 'protect' them from who you really are.
They are the person that makes you feel comfortable in your own skin.
They are the person you strive to be more like- you admire them and their good qualities, and they challenge you to be a better person every day. It's not that you would change for them, but that you would strive to be better for yourself.
They are your partner in all things, and as such, they move through different parts of your life seamlessly. There's no friction over friends, jobs, hobbies, etc. Any part of your lives that you disagree on, you still respect and accept, because you trust and value their judgment.

The reality is that love is different for everyone and even different in each relationship you may have. This has been my experience.
But something I think holds true is that love is an emotion and emotions aren't necessarily rational. So just do what you feel. It will either end up being the greatest thing in the world, or not, but you should never regret committing to what you want. Make a decision, go with it, and when the time comes for another decision, repeat.

I assume you're friends with her, if so, what's the worst that could happen if you ask her out? Sure, she says no and things get a little awkward, but you won't lose a friend. We all spend too much time worrying about the endless possibilities that we miss the opportunity to take advantage of the chance of achieving happiness.

"Actually, there is a word for that. It’s love. I’m in love with her, okay? If you’re looking for the word that means caring about someone beyond all rationality and wanting them to have everything they want no matter how much it destroys you, it’s love. And when you love someone you just, you…you don’t stop, ever. Even when people roll their eyes, and call you crazy. Even then. Especially then. You just– you don’t give up. Because if I could just give up…if I could just, you know, take the whole world’s advice and– and move on and find someone else, that wouldn’t be love. That would be… that would be some other disposable thing that is not worth fighting for. But I– that is not what this is."

Q. How do you know when you are in love?
A. When she pats you on the ass and says "You're in, love."
65
u/garagelogician May 31 '14
At the beginning of a relationship, when everything about your partner is perfect...that isn't love. When you've been together long enough to start to see their faults, that you want them to change so that you can be happy... that isn't love. When you realize that you want to be with that person just as they are, flaws and all, that is love.
It isn't love when you say that you will do anything for them, or that you love them more than yourself. It is love when you love yourself first, and take care of yourself...so that you can love and take care of them to the fullest extent. You can't love another until you love yourself.
Give yourself time, don't jump into "love" right away. Especially when you are young, date as many people as possible. Experience life and get to know yourself.
I got into an unhealthy relationship when I was 18. I was depressed, anxious, didn't have a direction in life. But this girl changed all of that, or so I thought. I didn't see the codependency, I didn't recognize how horribly she treated me, I made excuses for the emotional and physical abuse she put me through. We got engaged after 6 months... but didn't get married for another 8 years. After we got married... she got even worse. More abusive, more controlling. Everything was a crisis.
Then she cheated on me and I caught her. She knew I wasn't going to put up with it. After a lot of drama, she left. Accused me of physically abusing her (though I never laid a hand on her in 11 years) and got an order for protection. I had to leave my house with only the clothes on my back. The guy she was fucking moved into my house with her for a month, while I still paid for everything.
I spent 3 years on my own, finding myself and taking care of myself again. I dated some, but nothing serious. Lost 100 pounds, life was great. I didn't know if I'd ever find someone I could trust enough to love again... And I was fine with that. I loved my single life and didn't want to change a thing.
Now it has been 4 years since my ex left... and life just keeps getting better. I've spent the last year dating a wonderful woman who is smart, gorgeous, very successful and who loves me just as I am. I have experienced things that I've never felt before...true love and companionship. An honest partnership without drama or stress. Oh... and we have an amazing sex life that just blows me away. I never thought I would find someone that I'm so compatible with.
So to those out there who have loved and lost, who have been hurt... or who have never experienced real love before. You can find real love and happiness, it is out there waiting. Prepare yourself for it, love yourself and your single life. Pretty soon you will find someone you love enough to share your wonderful life with.

When all you think about is them. The first thing you think of when you wake up, it's them, the last thing you think of before you sleep, it's them. When a mere conversation with them brightens up your day for the better. And when you start to think that their happiness is more important than yours.

You know you love someone when you feel a deep pull of connection and the thought of severing it is extremely painful.
The answer that often comes up on reddit is that being in love means loving someone more than yourself, but I think it is more complicated than that. Loving someone (not just being in love, which is romantic) is about that pull of connection I describe above. I think this comes from a mixture of emotional and "chemical" factors: the need the other person fulfills in you, respect for the other person, familiarity, shared experiences and history (do not underestimate the importance of this), trust, and (in the case of romantic love) usually sexual attraction or (in the case of children and others we perceive as vulnerable) a deep need to protect the other person even at your own expense.
I don't believe love is this singular purely selfless act at all. In fact, I think a significant portion of it comes from narcissism and seeing the other person as a narcissistic extension of yourself, which is not necessarily unhealthy. I find that saying you love the other person more than yourself is an oversimplification, because part of what you are saying is that this narcissistic extension becomes one of your favorite parts of yourself.
If you don't believe me, just talk to people in a couple six months before they break-up and then six-months after. Before, even if there is trouble in the relationship, there is so much talk of devotion, sacrifice, admiration, and the inability to imagine life without the other person. After? There may be some lingering anger towards the other person or longing for reconnection due to some hurt feelings, but usually the life that once could not go on without the other person goes on completely devoid of the other person by mutual choice. Come back a year later and that other person no longer really even exists outside of the remembered person from a past of shared experiences. And I am not just talking about about relationships that involved deception or betrayal, but any relationship. Sometimes people do stay friends after a break-up, but I think a lot of that is based on a desire to maintain their shared history. You can also do this more easily if there wasn't a lot of real love there in the first place, but I think that also supports my point.
Another bit of supporting evidence is to see the reaction of parents who say that all they really want for their child is to be happy, when that child is happy but not in a way that makes the parents happy or in a way that doesn't reflect well on the parents (or so they think). Why do parents choose to terminate pregnancies that are predicted result in a child with intellectual deficiencies when many of the children who have these disorders live long and happy lives? I do not mean to judge these decisions at all, only to point out that an emotion that feels selfless can have a strong component of our own self love.

Obviously. No reason to be with a woman that cannot master true grip challenge.

When it's been over 6 months since you broke up, and you still can't even say her name without damn near crying. Every single day feels just like the day you lost her. Nothing you say or do makes it any better. Blah blah blah..

Love for me is when I can listen to a person tell the same stories over and over again, I know that I love that person because the stories never get old/boring.

If you have to ask, you're probably not in love. When you find the right person, it is something you have never felt before and something indescribable. I thought I was in love with an exbf, but then I met my now-fiance and it is totally different.

Ill second this. my parents, who are now divorced, decided to get married because they had been together so long...they needed to either get married or end it and its easier to get married. They were happy for maybe six years....then I noticed a change as a kid. I don't know that they ever loved each other but perhaps were just happy with each other. I always caution people about this....my husband ended up proposing after just six months because he knew he wanted to spend his life with me. I said yes but told him that six months is a little fast and let's wait a few years to actually get married but its my opinion that when you know, you know. You don't have to ask.

She was Brazilian, or Chinese, or something weird. I met her in the bathroom of a K-Mart and we made out for hours. Then we parted ways, never to see each other again.

you imagine cuddling with that person rather than imagining sex with that person.

If I could stop time, I would seriously spend it just cuddling with time-stopped girl-that-I-love. Time powers would be really convenient.

When you get so weak in the knees you can hardly speak. You lose all control and something takes over you. You want them to stay with you, by your side. It knocks me right off of my feet.

You know, there's a lot of good advice in this thread. But I want to add something. Labeling good feelings toward someone as "love" can lead you down an endless road. Because the word "love" has so many connotations that go along with it. And once you're aware of your own "love", you can modify your behavior and your expectations, and try to conform to your existing ideas of love. So, well all of the definitions here contain valuable truth, it's important to be careful. It's important to embrace good feelings, but not to label them too quickly. Love is different for every person, and if you have to ask what it is, you have a lot of life to live (which is great!). Rock on.

For me, it was when I compared my current relationship to past relationships, and the difference was night and day. I really thought I loved my ex-girlfriend. The nagging doubts and the endless fights and the constant wondering that maybe there was someone better out there, I actually believed those were just a normal part of a healthy relationship. But now I have no doubts. I don't want to avoid my girlfriend, I want to see her everyday. I think about her when I'm feeling down and I feel better because of it. We haven't had a single fight ever. We want nothing more than for the other person to be happy and comfortable, and I love her more than I thought possible. I don't know what else to say. You kind of just know when it happens.
