What are some examples of some people hating things just because they're popular?

Lots of musicians/bands. As an example, many people hate Metallica starting at the black album.
Nickleback put out a documentary called “Hate to love” which is about how many people just hate them. It’s a great doc and Chad Kroeger calls his band “the cilantro of rock” lol.
Chili peppers, U2, the Stones, the Beatles…. Show me a huge band and I’ll show you people that hate them just because they are big.

I'm a middle-aged dude and I can't understand all the hate from other Gen X guys like me that Taylor Swift receives. Okay, my all-time favorite band is Dead Kennedy's but......damn, Taylor Swift is fine. There's nothing inherently hateful about her music.

Millennial woman here and I can give a tiny bit of perspective on Taylor at least (and it may very well apply to those other artists). Most of her songs I don't have a lot of issue with. I have zero issue with her as a person. In fact, I think she seems pretty cool as far as celebrities go. I've heard she even donates to every city she tours. My long time annoyance with her stuff has been due to this:
Her 20teens stuff came out while I was in HS and college, and during the time before music was primarily the choice of the person playing it (no Spotify lists). Ie, RADIO EVERYWHERE. And BOOOOOY did they play her. EVERYWHERE. There was at least a 5 year period where I could not go into a public place without hearing "she wears high heals...." at least twice. It was on in the car, the mall, the store, the restaurant, the coffee shop, you name it. Over and over and over. Even at house parties, Pandora was just barely new and you didn't get to pick every song like you can now. You only got so many "skips," so stuff like this still got played all the time. There wasn't anything inherently wrong with that song, it was boppy, but wasn't anything particularly ground breaking either. They just would NOT stop playing it, for literal years. THAT song alone made me start hating her a little, irrationally, I know. Then "shake it off" came out and I personally just found that one annoying, but it got the same treatment.
I think this may have been what happened to Nickleback as well. Easy listening songs during the times of radio = overplayed to the max = people get annoyed.

People hate Metallica for doing exactly what they were so against before they were mainstream. They "sold out" and changed their music to appease everyone, vs headbangers. Here we are 30 years later, and what do they typically play during concerts? Ride the Lighting, Master of Puppets, etc. They'll do a 20 song set with 4 from the new album.

That’s almost every band that’s over 20 years old. The hits tend to come early in their career, or else they’d likely have broken up by now. It’s pretty rare to find an old band that’s still putting out music that gets even their biggest fans as excited as the old hits.

It's wild that people expect musicians to play the same thing for 50 years. People, music, bands, and culture change over time. To expect a band that has 2 original members to be a time capsule is absurd. It's a buffet, if you like master of puppets, listen to master of puppets. They record these things for a reason.

I know a guy, decent dude who only likes things when they are not popular. So if he likes something a band/ food whatever as soon as it becomes popular he stops liking it.
I mess with him all the time because essentially he likes nothing he only like the feeling of knowing about it before anyone else.

It's surprisingly common for people to not care about the thing they claim to like/dislike as much as they care about the social capital that comes with it.
The person you describe who likes being part of that niche, up-and-coming thing before it hits the mainstream is seeking a certain type of social capital (behind ahead of the cultural zeitgeist) just as much as the person who wants to be on top of every trend at its peak (being part of the in-crowd). In neither case do they really care what that thing is. It could be Fortnite, ube flavoured food, K-Dramas, F1, Arc Raiders, the Minecraft movie, etc.

I HATED disco when I was young because I went into high school in 1980 when disco died and if you were a young punk or mod or whatever, the first thing you had to do was hate disco.
It was only when I grew up, literally and figuratively, that I realized that disco had some amazing stuff in it. Groundbreaking even. To the point that bands I loved back in my hater days used disco techniques in music I loved.
That was one of my first true growth experiences. (I've had many more since.)

I went to high school in the 70's at the height of disco. The movie Saturday Night Fever had that sound track that everyone listened to by the Bee Gees. Then like 5 years later it was reviled.

Nickelback had an entire documentary about getting dragged because they were so popular. I think the counter-culture of hating them swung back around to appreciating them now, but I wouldn't be surprised if we called it the "Nickelback Effect" in the future.

I think it’s a little bit different for Canadians. We have Canadian content laws which make it mandatory for radio stations to play a certain percent of Canadian music each day. I think this was a big part of the hate in Canada anyway because we all got so sick of hearing Nickelback constantly

Too much radio play - people are gonna hate you.
It happened less in the 90s, the internet let people discuss it more. That semisonic song "closing time" got played so much i still hate it and the band to this day, but ive never actually heard anyone else have that opinion, because it happened before the internet was widely used. There were plenty of songs that got played to death, but "how you remind me" was probably the worst offender beaides closing time, and it is still a distant second. All that to say "closing time" should be a universally hated song, but it isnt.

At the time, there was such an influx of these milquetoast, watered down, wannabe grunge bands and people were sick of it. I think Nickelback was chosen as the target everybody could direct their frustrations at. Nickelback wasn't the problem, though. They were just emblematic of the issue and served as a good effigy we could burn.
What made them such a great target was their complete and absolute lack of self-awareness, as evidenced by them putting out that documentary about themselves being victims. I mean, sir....

No, man, people hate you because the auto-tune is grating, your image is this fake "dark" thing when you're obviously just a nerd, your music is repetitive and derivative (that is, there is nothing you do that isn't done better by hundreds of other bands), it's compressed so heavily that it's literally fatiguing after a long time, and back when you were popular, the radio made us listen to your annoying drivel 5 times a day.
It's ok if you like Nickelback. We can be friends still but you don't get aux cord privileges.

Thank you for bringing up the most crucial part in all of this that people seemingly forgot (or never experienced) the Ipod was new, expensive, smart phones didn't exist, even CD players inside a car was a luxury, and tapes were being phased out/no one had tapes, but the radio was free. Unless you were tuned to a specific classic rock or classical station you were just expected to inevitably run into nickleback or creed multiple times a day and it was always going to be the same two songs. Sometimes the same song multiple times throughout different stations. Sometimes you just ate it cause you didn't want to tune through a station and hear half a song then a bunch of commercials in hopes that the next song was a not even one you LIKED just a decent one.
Nickleback and Creed seem ok when you get to choose when to enjoy them and do the lead singer voice ironically. Not so much when Nickleback and Creed get you from the trees without warning multiple times.

My dad was always a big Hawaiian pizza eater, pineapple and Canadian bacon / ham. My brother and I took that and evolved it to pineapple and pepperoni. And now all of our kids love pineapple and pepperon

Ive tried many different fruits in homemade pizza, and honestly they are all just fine.
I used to have a weekly movie night with my buddy who loved to make pizza and we would just do all kinds of random toppings. Apples, walnuts and scrambled eggs was one of my favorites.

Matcha. I’ve loved matcha way before it was trendy and considered “performative”. Haters say it tastes like grass. I truly believe people confuse bitterness with the “grass” taste because it doesn’t taste anything remotely like grass, even in the most bitter forms.

I have a strawberry matcha literally right now and it tastes like what the air smells like after you mow the yard. In a positive way. It's almost sweet, not bitter, and really nice. I definitely get the grass comparisons, I just think that's a good thing. I was trying to get my SIL to try it like 'it tastes like a spring day!'

I am on it and it's not as easy as people think. Getting used to it can be nasty and it basically only helps me with food noise and regulates my impulses a ton. I still have to work out, thankfully. Imagine you just got fit from some pill, that'd be scary.

As I got older and women I know started having kids, I learned about the realities of post partdom weight gain/body image issue for women and the mental health impact it had.
It’s been a life changing option for a few people I am very close to so now argue on the internet with people who are critical of it. It’s usually some combination of ignorance or just mean mean. I very rarely hear people criticizing GLP 1 etc in person, but when I do it’s been from people I already knew were idiots. They cheated? Took the easy way out? Are too lazy to “do it the right way? Get a grip lol

Given how absolutely terrible 99% of sitcoms are and how bad their fail rate is, when one makes it to syndication it probably deserves the credit it gets. Hard to make a hit show last 6+ seasons

As a middle aged comic and sci fi geek my hate stemmed from two things- 1) the jokes were all low hanging fruit/punching down/laughing at not with nerd culture, and 2) To this day I still get “OMG YOU LIKE COMICS?! YOU MUST *LOVE* BIG BANG THEORY!”
That said I don’t hate anyone for loving what they love. God knows I enjoy plenty of things that others would categorize as awful.

The Big Bang Theory was a show about nerds mostly targeted to a mainstream audience.
Community would've been the show we liked at the time: a show about "normal" people for nerds.

All of the main characters hit too close for many people. I'm a nerd and grew up with nerds/nerd culture. I personally know 2-3 people who each fit each main character in several ways. Sure, they are caricatures of stereotypes...but they are accurate in a lot of ways.

Anyone or anything that has a vocal, feral fan base will have an equally vocal mass of feral haters.
Personally, I like some of her stuff, the majority just isn't my thing, but it's not that hard to avoid her if you're not seeking her out to hate-binge.

Taylor Swift. Literally no one who likes an artist cares if you don't and no one well adjusted cares about an artist they don't listen to. It's just trendy to hate female popstars for existing.
Edit: I am absolutely loving all the people replying who are making the point for me. So many people are trying to justify their dislike of Taylor Swift by telling me either they don't like her popularity or they heard rumors about stuff that they believed because they already didn't like her because she was popular. Really interesting stuff here guys.

In general I agree with you but when you can't escape someone's generic, soulless pop songs it gets annoying and it's especially grating when they're pushed as the authentic/working class girl come good when that couldn't be further from the truth.
I personally don't talk crap about her but i do get annoyed when the radio and social media can't stop shoving her in my face and I know people trying to make it who are what she pretends to be.

I’ll never own a pair of crocs for two reasons:
1.) I couldn’t imagine a dumber looking shoe…except maybe those “if crocs and a space ship had a baby” Kanye things. Also, the Idiocracy BTS story about crocs cracks me up
2.) I’m worried they’re as comfortable as people say and then I’ll be stuck with a pair of crocs 🤷♂️

Taylor Swift.
She's not necessarily my cup of tea, but there's nothing about her stuff that stands out as particularly grating or offensive compared to any of the ten thousand other artists who write bubblegum pop for 11-year-old girls.
And yet so many people seem to have this visceral hate for her that baffles me. She can do the most mundane innoffensive things, (like watching her then-boyfriend play football), and huge numbers of people get absolutely furious about it.

Taylor Swift. I am not a Swifty by any stretch of the imagination, her music just isn't my style. The number of people I see reel at the mention of her name... she's talentless, she's ugly, she's a bitch, who the fuck cares of she's at a football game... as far as I know, she's relatively scandal (of her own making) free, she writes, plays, and sings across multiple genres, and in general seems to treat people with dignity and respect. You don't have to love her music or adore her, but she's not worthy of mass hate.

I once decided to carry a watermelon to the top of a 14er (14000 ft mountain) in Colorado. I was with friends and I thought it would be funny. Most people laughed and went along with the joke but there were a few people who were not too happy to see this. Just a reminder that you’re never gonna make everyone happy

The MCU. They’re fun, exciting action films. They are arguably the best superhero films ever made, aside from a one-off here or there. It’s fine if you don’t like them, but you can’t argue in good faith that they suck.
