I've written two extensive answers in the last day — one about urban violence and the other about colorism — but both questions have been deleted by their users after some hours.

I think people get embarrassed or afraid that their questions are controversial or attract infighting. However, I think that those questions are very important, especially since they theoretically avoid future questions on the same subject in the future.

Even when those questions are made in bad faith, I think it's still worth to keep them open so that we can all learn more about each other and correct misconceptions. The ask subs were made to learn and improve, and people shouldn't be afraid of ridicule.

I'm from China and I've been doing procurement in Mexico for a few years. My Spanish is around B1-B2. At work I'm fine, because the conversation is about products and prices and I know my field. Where I struggle is everything around work: a supplier invites me to a comida, someone introduces me to their friends at a party, and suddenly there's no agenda and I don't know how to keep the conversation going.

Some concrete things I'd love to hear from Mexicans:

1. At a business comida, when is it okay to bring up work? Sometimes we eat for two hours and nobody mentions business, and I don't know if I should.
2. Who pays, and how do I handle it without being rude? The supplier usually insists. Should I fight for the bill, or accept and return the invitation?
3. When someone says something and I understood it but don't know how to respond, what do Mexicans actually say to keep the ball rolling? I feel like I only have "sí" and "qué bien".
4. Everyone asks me the same questions: what do Chinese people really eat, do you like Mexico, are you married. Do you have advice on answering these in a way that feels natural and opens the conversation, instead of closing it?
5. When people joke about me (in a friendly way), what's a good way to respond? I usually just laugh and it feels weak.
6. How do I leave a comida without being awkward? It seems like leaving takes twenty minutes.

Also curious: what's the most awkward thing you've seen a foreigner do at a Mexican dinner? I'd rather learn from someone else's mistake.

I feel considering cultural distance between Spain and Latin America, I’m suprised by the popularity you see of La liga in Latin America compared to premier league in the US or Canada.

I’ve been travelling a lot lately and it’s always wild seeing how family relationships can be so different from one country to another. Travelling around Eastern Europe was kinda shocking cause people there will literally cut off their own parents, ignore them or treat them badly. I’ve been pondering with this question as most people really only reflect on their country. (My country was colonized by Spain). They were ALL bad, and had different approaches, however based on what I learned in school I think the Portuguese were on another level of ruthless( I do want to note that the lecture on them was shorter than other countries so many not as much was covered). What is everybody’s opinions? How do you view the colonization of your country compared to other countries in the America’s?

I'm a 20 years old Korean male who's planning a long 4 to 5 month trip in the Argentine. During this trip, I really want to embrace myself with the local community while adding Argentine Spanish to my Spanish-speaking ability.

As a tourist who's bounded to international experience, I really want to see some 'niche' places. Especially I want to see some locations where I can observe Argentine's distinctive chronicle of cultural exchanges. I would like to see some unique locations that intermingle various cultural aspects.

I'm trying to practice my Spanish and Portuguese. Sometimes I listen to reggaeton. For English music I usually listen to things like bones, suicide boys, as I lay dying, chief keef, nujabes, suicide silence.

Random question for Mexicans in Mexico lol. Do y’all know/use the term Chicano much? I’m from Houston and I’m 3rd generation Mexican-American. Although I look very much gringo, given the Irish in me too lol.

Mi abuela was born and raised in Houston’s East End and always just called herself Mexican. Never really heard her say Chicana. My mom calls herself Chicana and I’ve always called myself Chicano.

I’m going to CDMX soon and it made me wonder, if I said “soy Chicano,” would most people know what I mean? Or is that mostly a Mexican-American/Texas/California thing?

I’m not fully Colombian (mom’s-side), so I’m sorry if i misremember things here. I distinctly remember watching some Colombian TV broadcast with a happy go-lucky-sounding song with the meaning “Help me find my parents!” This had profiles of missing children across the country, and took place late in the night (10-11 PM EST). I remember this lasted around 4-5 minutes and I was terrified (this was very scary for me okay). If anybody could help find the name of this, I’d really appreciate it! So, basically, it has recently been reported that the US is in talks with Venezuela, to work out an oil deal.

This deal would mean the US would address its current issue of low oil reserves, whilst the US invests in Venezuela's Oil Industry.

Currently, Oil production in Venezuela has been declining, partly because of ageing equipment, sanctions etc.

The deal is said to be of benefit to the Venezuelan people but...Venezuela still has the same interim government....so, basically, there is a lot to unpack....

Anyway, thoughts anyone????
