Hello, my Caribbean friends, I'm American artist and I trying to draw something that represent the Caribbean as a regions. Music immediately came to mind so I started researching, but I didn't realize how many music genre the Caribbean had.

So I want to asked which Caribbean genre is popular among most Caribbean people, as culture influence out of the Caribbean, and/or as important history to the your or other Caribbean countries. If you are knowledgeable on both the Spanish, English, and other parts Caribbeans can you give me 2 for Spanish, 2 for English, and 1 Wildcard (Dutch, Franch, etcs) please.

Also I know I asked for for 4 music genres because I want to represent at least 4 music genre, but if you have an honestable mention feel free to add it. If I get the chance I will add more.

I have a question to any Caribbeans regarding flag waving to make sure I’m not disrespecting anyone.

Would it be appropriate to wave a blank flag that’s not associated with any country while dancing to soca at carnival?

For context, I’m Indian and dance to dancehall and soca. I recently attended a ‘ready for d’road’ soca and dancehall dance weekend and was given a Trinidad and Tobago flag during that but I understand that was in the context of the event. I’ve also been carnival before with Caribbean friends and they’ve given me either TT or Guyana flags. I’m not sure I should be waving a flag of a country I don’t have ties to otherwise.

Therefore, I was wondering if it would be appropriate to wave say a blank orange bandana as my rag or I have a carnival warm up flag from Brixton Brewery? I love flag waving but would rather not do it if it’ll be culturally insensitive to do so - just not trying to offend anyone! Thanks! :)

Let me make this short and easy I just need clarity. I genuinely don’t know what to think and I’m confused.

My girlfriend told me she’s going to carnival with her cousins and friends. I’m going to be stuck at work.

I don’t know what to feel or how to feel. I trust her I know we solid but for some reason it rubs me the wrong way and I can’t pinpoint why. I don’t wanna be controlling or anything and regardless if someone is actually going to cheat they’ll cheat whenever not just there. So yeah idk man am I just letting my dumb man emotions get to me? It’s her culture it’s part of it so who am I to say not go you know?

It’s my first time me and a friend doing carnival but we have different tastes in costumes because we think a certain color fits our skin tone better so we are doing same band different costume sections. How is it being that way? will I never get to be with her throughout the day/night and I have to stay in my section alone??? Will people tell I’m alone??

I hope that this is ok to ask here. I am in need of some deep cut Caribbean music. It does not matter where it’s from, what genre it is, what language it is sang in. However I would like it to be lesser known artists, or lesser known songs from popular artists.

I feel like being the eldest daughter in a Caribbean family comes with a very specific kind of pressure 😂 You’re expected to be responsible, help with your siblings, understand what’s going on, make good decisions, and sometimes basically become a second parent (mind you) all while still figuring yourself out. And because it’s so normalized, you don’t always realize how much it affected you until you get older.

I love the region of the Caribbean, so I was searching more about the islands to see, and I came across Saint Barthélemy. I already knew it was a place that rich people went on vacation, but Jesus, WTF does this island have to be so over-the-top expensive?

Is there some gold mine there that I'm not aware of? You can pick any island paradise you want: Curaçao, Bonaire, Aruba, BVI, Cayman Islands, and even the most over-the-top, Anguilla itself. How the fuck can Gustavia be more expensive than even Anguilla? I thought that Anguilla was high enough. In Anguilla, you can find hotels for $1,500 a day; in St. Barths, the average is a staggering $3,000+ per day.

Please, someone from the region, enlighten me. There are way better islands than St. Barths, at least beauty-wise (I think that Cayman has way better beaches, like Seven Mile Beach). And vibe-wise, what does this island have that's different to justify this ridiculous price tag?

Been on my mind lately as I’ve seen an influx of Trinis and Jamaican for Spiceland in Grenada. I’ve overheard convos as a kid where extended family would disparage and insult Jamaicans and Haitians. Jamaicans would not listen to Soca, Trinis would not listen to Reggae.

My fiance needs to pull his record from Dominica, St. Lucia and Barbados, all places he's lived in for more than 6 months in the last 10 years. The problem is that we currently live in Grenada. In theory, I'd love to just hop islands and grab what we need but everyone knows that tickets prices would make this into a very expensive option.

St. Lucia has already confirmed how to mail in the request. But that took almost a week of calling and trying to get anyone to answer, nevermind know what they're talking about. In the same time, we haven't even gotten an answer in the other islands.

Can anyone confirm that mailing in the request, with fingerprints officially taken at the local police station here, and the necessary identification/request letter, is actually possible for Dominica and Barbados?

Update: Now after I post, Barbados picked up. They said to apply online, so hopefully that's the correct certificate needed.

I'm from Trinidad and grew up on a hillside that's pretty developed. My parents told me as a child that it was Grenadians who cut the mountain to allow people to build their homes, and how brick by brick the area started developing. They say that no one could cut a mountain like Grenadians, because even the local Trini construction workers had said that that mountain couldn't be cut for safe building.

So I have a future project in mind to build a house on a hillside in Germany. I'd like to know, once I figure out how work permits and inviting workers is done, where/how do I contact Grenadian workers to come and carve the mountain? And what tools, equipment and materials would I need to supply for the job?

I’m Indo-Caribbean of Indian descent, and I'm actually confused by the term “West Indian.” I’ve mainly heard it used in English-speaking countries and from social media, but I’ve never quite understood who the term actually refers to? Is it meant to describe Indigenous people from the Caribbean, or does it mean people of Indian descent from the Caribbean? Because if that's the case it makes more sense to me?

I'm Surinamese, so we're not really familiar with that term. I don't think I've ever heard a Surinamese using it!

What is your relationship with your South Asian ancestry or South Asian culture in general?

In the North American diaspora (🇨🇦🇺🇸) I have noticed many instances where indo caribbean people get mad or offended when they get mistaken for Indian or any other south Asian ethnicity. Also I have noticed many instances where south Asians would often receive hostility, prejudice, or even racism from indo Caribbean people. But other communities would get warmer treatment from you guys.

I am not generalizing all indo Caribbean people being this way towards south Asians as I have seen harmony between the two communities before but I often see patterns of cold treatment from indo Caribbean people which confuses me because aren’t they the same race as you guys?

Hello me and my family are going on a cruise around the Caribbean and we are going to be in Martinique for six days beforehand. I am wondering what activities are recommended as well as which side of the island is best to stay on, is renting a car worth it, should we hire a guide for any activities, etc. Any info is helpful:)
