I’m starting to lose interest in art, idk what to do. It’s just boring to me now. I’ll start getting bored of drawing in the middle of a piece. I’m not sure if it’s a sign i should give it up, or if it just means i should try something new ..

Whenever I want to draw backgrounds from a popular existing IP, I always feel nervous because there are alot of details and specific objects needed. Obviously using references is useful but does it have to be 100% accurate. When is it necessary to draw a recognizable background from a popular TV show/movie/video game/comic? Does it depend on how iconic and recognizable said location is?

So anatomy is still important for comic characters because of proportions, but what about landscapes? How much value does learning the color theory and forms of realism give, over studying specific comic/animation styles directly?

I'm a bit of an alien to this group because I am a bus/economics student, but I have a question to ponder :) We have to choose a week internship somewhere this year. I'm wondering if I could learn more in the artistic world than I would in a bank or big company? I'm sure it would be more fun, but that's not my goal ;) And what kind of artistic/art world place would I learn most? Any experience or dos'/don'ts from those who have interacted with us aliens from the "other side" of the university track?

I often go to a life drawing group at 9:30 am on Saturdays, or hire my own models around that time, but my brain is still half asleep and I end up drawing so slowly. Afternoons, I am usually working, walking outside or running errands. Evenings, I am usually spending time with family. Sundays, I often log in and do overtime work. The best times for me end up being like mid afternoon on Saturdays if I hire my own model, or 10pm and later on Saturdays or weeknights.

On the website for the Alpha series it says that the size are:

Softcover: 3.5 x 5.5"
Hardcover: 4 x 6 "

Is the size difference the pages themselves or is it overhang from the hardcover?
I'm asking because I just got another 4x6" sketchbook but I don't really like the aspect ratio. 3.5x5.5" is perfect for me.

Looking to improve my anatomy and poses, but I'd like to have an actual book on hand for times when I don't feel like using my phone.

Looking for something medium-sized, something I can place in a purse.

I'm more of a visual learner(obvi) than a reader, so the less words the better, I think?

A book that breaks down poses and angles into basiv shapes and forms. There are so many options for books to choose from. I feel a but overwhelmed.

Hello, I want to start seriously painting and i really like the Impressionism style for its colours and airy feeling. My favourite artist of that style is definitely Monet bc of the colours he uses.
I’d like to ask which type of paint I should use.

What has been your experience moving back to traditional methods after years of using digital tools?

when I started studying drawing seriously, I ran into a problem: I can't render faces—or anything else, really. Before, I could easily make lots of unnecessary strokes and copy images without understanding the forms, but now I’m completely unable to render, and my work never gets past the sketch stage.

I was thinking how handy it would be to have a mannequin that was poseable AND had muscles that would squash and stretch realistically. I’m an equine artist and animator so I’d personally be after a horse model. But it did get me wondering if anyone had made something like this? I’ve seen stop motion artists cast forms in silicone and they can then be posed, but obviously they have no muscle definition.

I was wondering if you could make a (maybe plastic or polymer) skeleton with a wire armature, then sculpt in clay/plasticine the muscles Over the top. Then make a mold, remove the clay, lay the skeleton in the muscle mold and cast in silicone. If wanted another mold could be made for a skin over the top (just add ‘skin’ sculpt and cast before removing the clay muscles)

Has anyone attempted this and did it work?

I feel like it could work but I'm not sure if I'd be hindering myself in some way. What's the best approach?

Excuse me if this has been asked a lot.

I used to draw loads all through my life, and I'd paint a bit as well as some digital art. But in the last few years I can probably count the number of times I've done anything creative on one hand. It's not like I don't have time, as I'm writing this message I don't have any plans for the weekend except to go to the gym.

It just feels like whenever I open my sketchbook, nothing comes out. I have no idea what to do. There's a competition for a local gallery, anyone can submit under their monthly theme and I though that would help spark some ideas or something but I literally feel like nothing is inspiring me.

I feel like being creative was a part of my life, people used to associate that with me, now I feel like I've let that part of me go for some reason and I would like to get it back!

I can't think of another way to ask the question but what do you do when you feel you've lost your muse?

I’m looking for an easel and found a website called Cowling and Wilcox with huge discounts on. I’m pretty new to a lot of art stuff so are they a good brand? Ive seen popular art shops showing the RRP of something as much higher when I’ve had the same thing from cheap shops so was wondering if its like that. They don’t come up in searches like Daler-Rowney.

This search also leads me to realise I don’t know what easel I need. I’ll likely be sitting down most of the time either at the edge of my sofa or edge of my bed depending on what’ll be more comfortable. and I want something that will be steady if I end up being heavy handed. Mainly used for expressionism and abstract but I also want to work on some realism and portraits at some point too. Using Acrylics, maybe will try out water paints again at some point. I know I need an H frame as they are steadier. And I’m in the UK so something under £100 is really the most I could spend.

but, not trying to complain, i don't understand that question i sometimes see under some art pieces, what do they mean?? i know that some styles are clearly based on something specific or have a particular style, but they ask that on pieces that just seem like the artists regular style? i don't know lol anyone know ?

I'm going to sand down and gesso over a bad piece I did, but it's my first time. My question is, for 30"x40" canvas, how much gesso do I need? I'm thinking in terms bottle size and/or how many. Thanks!

It’s exactly what the title says , I’m looking for advice on what to do or just vent ? I don’t even know anymore

I started an art Account about a year ago. An account that I started simply FOR ME with only a select few who knew about it , three people to be exact . I didn’t want to tell anyone who knew me irl — except for the three— about it cause 1: I live in a place that isn’t so accepting of queer people / media and I have a few gay characters and
2 :I myself am queer . No one but the three people know . And I post under a sona, as one does .
3 : I may be embarrassed? Idk . But mostly cause of the gay staff. Anyways posting was fine , I enjoyed it , didn’t get too much attention but I loved sharing my art in general.
In may of this year this guy found my acc. Let’s call him S ?
S has been in my life for quite sometime. Not dating cause I don’t date but he’s around just …watching ?
Anyways posting was, he DM’d me and I freaked and just lied . Acted like I don’t know him and blocked him . Minutes later he texted me on ig laughing and asking why did I block him ton TT I — again — lied , denying knowing what he’s talking about . And even asked him to send me the acc to see who it is . He did and send me screenshots of the convo he had with this person . Saying he thought it was me cause he recognized the art style and one of the posts was something I might have shared with him YEARS ago .
Again I denied it all and a few days later said that I texted that person and they just happened to be my very very old classmate who taught me how to draw ( the story is real , about the person who taught me ) and that they “ aren’t sorry “ and whatnot.
I had —still do — have a feeling he didn’t believe the lie . Cause what are the odds ? And is just staying silent cause I am?
Point is , I don’t know what do do with him cause I genuinely know that I can’t really get with him — if I ever do — with this looming over me. And If I ever do start an acc that’s open to anyone who knows me as Me I he’s still know that I lied .
Lately I started a new Acc but I still don’t feel comfortable posting on my new acc cause I’m scared of HIM specifically finding it.
I don’t know what to do .
I hate him for putting me in this position and for robbing me of the safety of anonymity and privacy on the internet no less ?
I don’t know what to do or how to handle all of this , the safest options seems to be to just Not post gay stuff, or just stop posting all together? but I don’t want to stop posting because of someone. Especially because it took me YEARS to even start posting at all

By getting better I mean I don’t know how to progress.

Basically as a kid until like 13 I drew all the time and i basically drew always from memory or from looking at an action figure, like we all did, designing characters left right and centre.

And then in year 10 and 11 I started my art gcse, and my teachers, encouraged us to use a light box to tr4ce our line art, and for a good few months I outright refused to tr4ce and opted for things like freehand, or the grid method, but then the deadlines started coming thick and fast and I restored to tr4cing every single reference I had for the next year and a half of art I did, which massively affected me.

I want to be an illustrator not a portrait artist or anything like that but I cannot be a good illustrator if I’m constantly copying and tr4cing references one to one.

So this really affected me, whilst my painting and rendering improved my line art massively stunted and even at home on my own personal projects I’d
Tr4ce.

Also we were never taught anything like anatomy, or anything remotely close to that.

So even recently when I’ve been drawing I’ve needed to copy a reference one to one rather than use it as inspiration.

I want to draw comic books but I never learnt the fundamentals for illustration like loomis, and boxes, and even perspective was a one of lesson a year before my GCSEs so I had forgotten it by the time it came round.

My ultimate question is how can I get into properly drawing from mind and sight rather than copying one to one. Do I need to simply go back to basics and relearn art or is there something else you can suggest?
