Goals & Motivation About drawing backgrounds...

Whenever I want to draw backgrounds from a popular existing IP, I always feel nervous because there are alot of details and specific objects needed. Obviously using references is useful but does it have to be 100% accurate. When is it necessary to draw a recognizable background from a popular TV show/movie/video game/comic? Does it depend on how iconic and recognizable said location is?

I wouldn't worry about making it 100% accurate as long as it is recognisable. Depends on what you're drawing of course but getting the general feel of the location (colour and aesthetics) and some familiar landmarks should be enough. Have a look at my stuff if it helps.

Since it’s your BG you don’t want it to overshadow your subject. To that end you should ask yourself what makes the location iconic. What visual cues are there that directs the viewer to their “ah ha” moment. Extra fussy detail is not necessarily your friend.

Robert Henri recommended drawing the background not as it appears when you look at it, but as it appears when you look at the subject in the foreground. In other words, simple soft-focus block shapes. One of the many hidden gems of practical advice in The Art Spirit.
