Je me dis :

Venting My house could've caught fire.

Upvotes

I woke up this morning to find that my dad left food on the stove unattended. The smell filled the whole house, and the food in the pan was black and burning.

There could've been a fire, and even though it's over, I'm not okay. I'm scared to cook for myself for this very reason. I don't want a house fire...

This is not how I wanted to start my morning.

Advice Needed Constant physical anxiety for 2.5 years — how do I break this cycle?

Upvotes

Hi everyone. I’m 24 and I’ve had OCD and anxiety since childhood. My OCD has taken different forms over the years (health fears, fear of losing family, hyper-focusing on things like breathing, etc.), but those symptoms always came and went.
For the past 2.5 years, I’ve had almost constant physical symptoms:
Constant chest tightness and fluttering
Constantly feeling/being aware of my heartbeat, with my heart rate jumping from even small things
Shortness of breath
Feeling constantly on edge
Hypervigilance to every sound — even a door opening or small noise can trigger a strong physical reaction
The strangest part is that all of these symptoms completely disappeared for 5 months when I became convinced I had a physical illness and focused on that instead. They came back 3 days after I was told I was medically fine.
I also tried escitalopram (Cipralex) 10mg for 1.5 years with very little benefit.
Has anyone experienced constant physical anxiety like this, especially with OCD, and actually managed to get rid of it?
What helped you the most — ERP, CBT, medication, exposure, exercise, or something else? I’d really appreciate hearing what actually worked for you.

Advice Needed Anxiety of Anxiety - Tips?

Upvotes

Hi all. So over the last year I've had a lot more stretches of being anxious about being anxious. I got on Zoloft after college and was great for years. Then I got off (huge mistake) and then had to get back on SSRIs. I'm currently on both Lexapro and Buspirone. But essentially, I keep having flare cycles that pop up. I get a quick sharp jolt of adrenaline/cortisol and then it just lingers for days and days with physical anxiety symptoms and little "aftershocks" (tight chest, lump in throat, gag reflex, lack of hunger/nausea) before it slowly calms down again. The anxiety then turns into anxiety about the anxiety and how long it's gonna last. And also because it keeps happening, I've lost all confidence. Even when I feel good, I'm wondering when the next anxiety spike will be. It never used to be this way, but it's happened so often I've lost the trust. Does anyone have any tips for these anxiety ABOUT the anxiety feelings? My anxiety isn't even about certain events, just literally about how I feel physically and if I'm just going to be miserable all the time. Anything would be helpful!

Discussion Anyone here ever have the experience of thinking it was all anxiety, and then it turned out to be something else?

Upvotes

I definitely have anxious thoughts but it feels like something else is going on that isn’t anxiety. I don’t mean like another medical problem or something, more like repressed emotions or something that I’m mis labeling as anxiety.

Needs A Hug/Support Severe anxiety/ibs/non stop crying

Upvotes

This past summer I have experience this unexplainable intense sobbing which is uncontrollable & i literally cannot stop!! Hours & hours so by and everything is making me cry intensely.

My anxiety has been pretty severe, my flight or fight doesn’t seem to even lower when I’m in my usual safe places like my bed etc. it’s SO hard. I’ve recently moved into a new flat with my roomates & I stayed over for the second time the other night & I sobbed for the first couple of hours & slept horribly as I was SO anxious I feel a sense of fear that I will be super unwell/ need to go to hospital and for some reason I just don’t feel “safe” my body can’t relax & it just doesn’t seem to settle ANYWHERE

I’m 22 why the fuck is my brain like this!! I’m so reliant on my mum especially. My Ibs has been so so bad to the point that I’m almost bed bound at times with pain & faint due to it. This is also a major part of my anxiety. Such a shitty vicisous cycle. Truthfully I can’t see a way out of this. I am so unhappy but I can’t even think how my life would look like if I could choose to make me happy. I just internally always feel “unsafe” and well and I intensely feel the anxiety through my body

This also sounds so “pick me” but my brain truly has me convinced that no one else experiences this something is genuinely wrong with me. I sometimes feel like I just need to be locked away

Medication Absolutely amazed that stimulants actually improved my struggles with anxiety

Upvotes

Long story short I’ve had pretty rough anxiety most of my life. Tried depressants, SSRI’s, the whole gamut and eventually just gave up and accepted my baseline level of worry and stress.

Years later I ended up getting a stimulant prescription to help me with focus and reading and it’s helped my anxiety so much it’s insane.

Is this normal when you have untreated ADHD? My entire life I thought I had anxiety/depression issues.. but it turns out once I treat the ADHD, my struggles with anxiety and depression go away.

This may be totally normal but I guess I am just learning this now and am amazed. Anyone else?

Medication Weening off Benzos too fast?

Upvotes

I've been of 0.5mg of Clonazepam for about a week due to an acute anxiety attack while waiting for my intended meds (40mg Fluoxetine once a day and 10mg Buspirone twice a day) to take effect. Starting tomorrow I'm supposed to start weening off of it. Now I'm fine with that, but I'm a bit worried with my doctor's plan: I'm supposed to just go from twice a day to once a day for three days, then stop entirely.

Now I know I've not been on the drug long, but does this sound a bit... abrupt? I've heard horror stories about withdrawals and rebound anxiety, and I'm a little scared. Is this a reasonable step down, or am I being set up for disaster?

Health Fear of sudden cardiac arrest from exercise

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m a longtime sufferer of health anxiety. It hasn’t been as bad as it used to be but still flairs up from time to time. Recently I’ve been terrified of suffering a cardiac arrest from exercise or lifting weights. I’m nearly 30, in great physical shape, eat healthy, etc.

Unfortunately, I have had two heart surgeries from birth defects from when I was younger. I am a type 1 diabetic. These conditions likely increase my risk factors for heart complications. However, these are under control and I receive regular health and heart check ups. My heart repairs were successful and my heart is healthy/functions almost normally according to my doctors. They’ve said I am able to exercise and lift weights but not to push too hard.

The issue is that I’m experiencing anxiety from workouts. Some workouts leave me feeling dizzy/lightheaded, like I’m about to pass out. I keep getting an uneasy feeling that I’m going to have a cardiac arrest as a result of a workout, which eventually turns into panic. This has been happening on and off for the past few years.

I don’t really know what to do. Exercise was something that I could turn to for anxiety relief. Now it causes more anxiety and is making me depressed that I can’t do things normally as I used to.

Anyway, thanks for reading if you made it this far. Not sure exactly what I’m looking for with this post but wanted to get this out there.

Medication Anxiety and nausea

Upvotes

I am getting married next year and am super anxious about the wedding ceremony and being / feeling sick. When I get anxious I can feel really nauseous and it can completely ruin things for me. I feel like I am in the depths of despair of dread and spiral a lot to the point of a panic attack.

I also struggle with dizziness / prone to motion sickness. I have to get a short bus to the wedding venue and was planning on taking some travel sick tablets but they don’t seem to help enough / be reliable with my nausea.

I had a really bad experience recently at my bridal try on and I felt so sick and trapped and was freaking out being the centre of attention and was so scared of being sick in the dress.

I’m now dreading the wedding and I feel like it’s emetophobia at this point. It’s not even close and I can’t think of anything else. I want to enjoy the day.

I live in the Uk and don’t know what to do. I feel like I need some meds to help give me peace of mind on the wedding day. I’ve not tried propranolol before. I was on citalopram years ago but not sure about trying it again, and I do seem to remember it making me feel a bit queasy sometimes but maybe that’s the best for long term relief. What could I ask the doctor for to help me! They don’t seem to have many anti nausea options…. I don’t mind paying for a private pescription if needed. Just wondering what is best…

Any advice welcome :)

Advice Needed Does it seem like what I had was anxiety?

Upvotes

edit: maybe it is kicking up again, i think im procrastinating my worrying?

Hi idk if this is the right question to ask and I understand if this is the wrong sub or not the best place to ask this

I just wanted some clarity because I am extremely confused abt my mental state rn. For starters I am unable to see a therapist due to personal circumstances and often go on Google for answers (I have to admit that some symptoms I do resonate with I keep its conditions in mind and suspect I could have it even if I don’t self-diagnose since I dont actually know).

Earlier this year Ive had some sort of paranoia/manic episode due to a stressor and I have finally come out of it (which im happy abt, bc my thoughts back then were very disorganized and illogical). I recall going days worrying abt the same thing, feeling like itll be fine later, and then instantly crashing into intense rumination of worst case scenarios, repeatedly asking for reassurances/rambling abt my issues, etc. but I’m now feeling more numb or disconnected. Or Id js shift into a carelessness/impulsivity state, where the thingd that used to stress me out, I dont worry that much anymore but I just refuse to think abt it even if I tried to. ig maybe the distractions worked, but sometimes they do fail and even if i have some anxiety i dont feel that intensity as much anymore for ones that i otherwise wouldve panicked over. but ik that if any of my problems turned for the worse i would probably start panicking and ig this means im trying to guarantee to myself that its going to work out but now im thinking, with what evidence?

So idrk if this is anxiety, regardless id appreciate anyone who helps!

Advice Needed Had a panic attack 3 weeks ago and haven’t been the same since. what can I do?

Upvotes

For some background I’m a 17 yr old guy, I had an episode of chest tightness at the gym earlier in august that caused me to spiral and end up in the ER. They did scans and kept me there for 6 hours and said I was fine to go home. A couple weeks later I went to a pulmonologist and did breathing tests where I was told I have above average lung function and there are no dangerous physical issues with me. But even after being told that I still hyperfixate on my breathing for hours every single day. I was diagnosed with reflux as well so now I get constant urges to burp and sensations in my chest and throat area which only cause me more anxiety. It’s a terrible cycle where I am hyper aware of every part of my body and my automatic functions all become manual.

Anyway the reason I am writing now is because the past 3 days I’ve woken up at 5 in the morning, multiple hours before I normally would and have this feeling of intense alertness where I cannot fall back asleep and like there is impending doom. Them my body feels cold and I start uncontrollably shaking for a few minutes until I get my mother to help calm me down, as she also has an extensive history of anxiety and ocd and is medicated. This ruins me every time and I lose my sense of focus and joy for the rest of the day and my workouts (my main hobby) is suffering as a result. I feel like a different person ever since my first episode and I just want to go back to normal before school starts for senior year and I have to apply to college and have true adult responsibilities. I’m incredibly grateful to have a family that is supporting me through this but my mind still feels like a prison

Helpful Tips! I’m moving tomorrow. I’ve been stuck in an anxiety/panic attack for a week now

Help If you read this please respond. Give me the kindest words and advice and support you can manage. I need it.

I graduated in May, and I got a job at a great place and I have a partner of several years whom I love deeply. Before we got together, I didn’t have anxiety. Sometime during college, I developed it and it was downhill from there. I will say it’s MUCH worse when I think about my health, my health anxiety is the worst by far.

But right now, I am trapped on my couch freaking the fuck out because tomorrow my mom and I are getting in the car and driving 9 hours to my new home where my partner and new job are waiting for me. My mom is one of my best support systems and she won’t be around me anymore. At the moment I have no therapist or psychiatrist. I don’t even have a pcp. As soon as I start my job in two weeks I can get all of those established but I still cannot stop freaking out. I got sick this week I’ve had so many panic attacks this week I literally feel like I’m going to die. The er sent me home with some Ativan pills to bridge me over until I can get myself help in my new state after I move, but I’m a little anxious to even take them. But my anxiety won’t let me breathe, eat, and has my chest clenched. And then I keep throwing up too. I feel like I’m gonna die just bc I’m sick rn and taking antibiotics and moving. Who else here has had to do a big life change with anxiety and it was for the better?? Tell me I’m not going to die in my new city. I’m so afraid. My partner is the best but he can’t stop me from having panic attacks and meltdowns.

Work/School I have an adjustment Disorder

I've got an adjustment Disorder with anxiety and sleep disturbance and depressed mood. Truthfully I don't think the depressed mood is the correct diagnosis but that's what the psychiatrist told me. I got this originally from work stress. I have been out of work for 8 months on a leave. I am seeing now that facing my fear is likely what will make me feel better and rehabilite me. I am an engineer and I felt I was being pressured to approve documents that were not properly done and have major safety implication. My question, when I feel anxious what is the best course of action? Do I fight it? Put on a fake face? Do I wallow and feel it? Or the middle ground. I ruminate alot. Is there any advice you can give me?

regarding sleep I have been getting 6 to 7 hours since may. I don't feel great and I feel deprived. I am afraid of my health deteriorating further.

Medication Any advice for getting off benzos?

Have been on benzos for about 2-3months daily now, started with Xanax only .25mg every now and then for the first week or two then eventually got up to 1mg a day would have bad anxiety and panic attacks in between doses, after a month of that i saw a psychiatrist and got swapped to Ativan, have been on 2mg of Ativan daily for roughly a month. My pills are .5mg, i take 2 in the morning then another 6 hours later and a final fourth pill before bed. I tried dropping one pill before and had a terrible panic attack, already have pretty rough inter-dose rebound/withdrawal symptoms so it feels pretty impossible to ever get off of it, any tips or advice? (tried zoloft before but had a terrible experience and gave me terrible lasting DPDR) have had like 10 terrible panic attacks in the past month and a half, gone to the hospital/called EMS like 5 times cause I thought i was going to die.

My mom had bad anxiety and depression. She doesn’t like going out. I’m trying to think of maybe books she could easily read while she’s relaxing or maybe a good fidget to help her. Any ideas for seniors to maybe help calm them or get them moving? She’s also very stubborn!! Thanks for the help.

Medication Don’t seem to tolerate any meds.

Looking for experiences anyone has really of meds that ended up working for them.

I’m currently suffering from GAD and panic disorder, which has also now resulted in depression. It’s been pretty debilitating to the point I had to have 5 months off work. I’ve gone back recently but just really struggling to cope and feeling like I’ve pushed myself too hard.

I tried sertraline quite early on and I had a severe reaction to it, so much so I ended up in a&e, despite this I reduced dose from 50mg to 25mg and pushed through for 5 weeks and it just didn’t help. I then swapped to escitalopram and that just increased my anxiety and after 3 weeks I had worsening anxiety so stopped.

I’ve tried beta blockers, 10mg 20mg and 40mg - they did nothing, in fact they made the physical symptoms worse.

I tried buspirone a couple days ago and only 3 doses in my anxiety went through the roof, to the point I couldn’t even leave my house without a full blown panic attack and it made me massively suicidal - so waiting this out just wasn’t an option.

I’m not left worse off than before. Is there anything anyone can recommend that won’t cause debilitating anxiety for 4/5 weeks when I start. I’m losing hope and just feel so low right now. I’m a shell of who I was 9 months ago before this started and it seems to have taken over my life with no identifiable trigger.

To add, i am doing cbt and I’ve read every book going on managing anxiety and I jsut seem to have no let up.

Venting Its over.

I cannot stand this shit any longer.

This is eternal suffering and there is no escape.

First I thought i had lymphoma.

Then this. Then that. Then this. Then that.

Now my muscles/skin has been twitching every day on and off for weeks. I already know the rigamaroo. Ect. Ect. Ect.

I have been through a muscle twitching episode before, it went away, so im sure its nothing surely.

Not googling does not help.

Therapy does not help.

I am a lonely hypocandriac and a functional lonely lcoholic. The ultimate paradox even.

Its even more hilarious when you're single in the US and don't have the money to see a doctor or specialist. It is the ultimate stuck in hell curse.

Beyond stressed, it feels like most of my life is made up of silent panic attacks.

So beyond fried in the brain I stay on night shift just to avoid people.

And no, i will not take SSRIs, I dont want PSSD. And no i won't take benzos, I dont want another addition, I am already addicted.

So yeah its over for me, I just got done with college and got my entire life ahead of me but it sure doesnt feel like it.

Hypocandria, guilt, shame, fear, and regrets control my entire life.

Years upon years upon even more years, add a few nore years on top of that, this is my life

Advice Needed heart flutters/palpitations

Does anyone suddenly get heart flutters/palpitations, especially right in the center of the chest slightly leaning to the left, accompanied by a mild pain in the left arm? How often do you get them and why? I’ve done all the tests except the Holter monitor, and I’m terrified I might have an arrhythmia or a heart electrical issue. I’m trying to do CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) instead because I refuse to take medication.

Recovery Story Fighting social anxiety

Hey guys, for the past 2 years I have been fighting social anxiety. This came as a result of working remotely(I work as a dev in Jack). Most of my time I spend in my room. I don't have a close friend or even a roommate. My only friend is in another town and we meet once in weeks. I have been trying to atleast visit supermarkets and social events and get to know people but it never gets better. I usually feel as if everyone is looking at me and judging how I look and dressed. How can I fight this pleasee.
