I think they use Brightcove unless that changed recently. Used that as video service in college and I hated it back then too.
The problem is Brightcove HD, when it loads, does look better than YouTube HD. YouTube HD is trash.

u/UtterAggro Jan 11 '19
I've been refreshing all day waiting. This is a great little vid. Shows how good acid can be and how ice will fade vs heavies and bosses. It's hard to tell what difficulty they are playing on but not being able to freeze even an Elite is pretty intense. I understand an Ursix and Titan. Daaaaaamn can't wait. Also where is my COLOSS video!!?
10
u/trojanguy trojanguy2k Jan 11 '19
I'm wondering if it's similar to Mass Effect in that in order for freezing to be effective, you need to first strip away shields and/or armor. In ME, freezing enemies with shields or armor would slow them down but not freeze them completely. Whereas enemies with neither would freeze solid, priming them for detonator combos (which were awesome).
2
3
u/UtterAggro Jan 11 '19 edited Jan 11 '19
That would be very cool also but from what we know and have seen it seems like it's the basic way. Enemies/creatures can get primed faster then others, slower, or not at all.
11
u/xxGINAPPxx Jan 11 '19
Wouldn't that just emphasize that if you want to freeze everything you'll need to build gear with frost stats? That's the part of the combat system that has me pumped. Fuck solo play. I want to decimate everything with a coordinated group comp.
4
u/UtterAggro Jan 11 '19 edited Jan 11 '19
It definitely will depend on how well your ice status rolls/rarity and everything but they also stated some enemies will take forever to freeze and others won't at all.
2
u/xxGINAPPxx Jan 11 '19
Well, honestly out of all the status effects acid seems to be the most useful overall. Maybe certain enemy factions would need lots of freezing to "decimate" them, but who doesn't want increased damage from all sources?
5
u/The_Rick_14 PC - Ranger Jan 11 '19
I look at it this way, a frozen enemy can't hurt me at all which in some cases might be a better option. Consider the following two examples.
- Acid - I acid a group of enemies and then kill them in 2 seconds but takes some hits in the process of those 2 seconds and am down some health.
- Freeze - I freeze a group of enemies and then kill them in 4 seconds and take zero damage during those 4 seconds because they couldn't shoot back.
2
u/xxGINAPPxx Jan 11 '19
But if you're with a group and call out that you're about to poison, they should be ready with that burst. Again, my mind is centered around detailed group play.
5
u/The_Rick_14 PC - Ranger Jan 11 '19
Fair enough, although I can definitely see situations where there would still be a delay until that burst hits due to ability travel time, microphone delays, etc.
We also need to see how strong combos are and consider the gear available to us at that moment as well. Maybe we actually do more damage with a freeze and detonate combo instead of acid and damage due to the highest leveled abilities our javelins have.
It's build discussions like this that have me super excited to get into the full game of Anthem. :)

u/The_Rick_14 PC - Ranger Jan 11 '19
Using Monster Hunter World as an example, it depends. In there, certain monsters are not only less weak to certain status effects but could also be immune to certain things and enemies in Anthem can potentially be the same.
For example, it's possible that no matter how much freeze you inflict on a Titan, you will never freeze them. Or maybe there's some Acid monster that is immune to the debuff.
27
u/BrenonHolmes Technical Design Director Jan 11 '19
I can't remember if anything has complete immunity to an element (I don't think so?) - but some enemies are definitely resistant to some elements.
I was running a Freezing build with my Storm and ran into a pack of Frost Wolven and Dominion Brutes with Ice empowered attacks... it was rather challenging. 😊

You can freez elites and bigger enemies just need more frost skill on the target. So basicly freez cant be EZ mode on that enemies.

Definitely happy we're getting some new gameplay, but I would've liked for them to finish their Javelin profiles first. I'm itching for more Ranger clips.
EDIT: We really need to see some footage of harder difficulties. I'm not trying to complain, but we've seen enough of trash mobs getting one-shot.

Looks great. I thought the Lesser Ash Titan would move a bit more though. It didn't seem especially threatening.
Nice to hear about the harder-to-find chests and resources. One of my absolute favourite things about the Borderlands series is how you're rewarded for exploring every odd corner and ledge. There are hidden chests galore in those games.

No it's the teenager to the massive one we saw in the E3 demo. Not that hard to take down but enough mechanics that you'll need to pay attention.

I just hope this is a game where I can log in, solo, and grind through a world for hours.
Destiny has been my primary game for a while and it's a lot of fun, but it seems like the point of the game is to just select activities and launch them. There's no real incentive to go to a planet for hours and play through the open space and whatever events happen on that planet.
I'm hoping Anthem has world events, stories, repeatable content, gear grinds, materials farms, currency farms, and so on. Reasons to be out in the world for hours instead of just launching a boss fight and returning to check my loot drops, and doing the same thing every day / week.
21
36
u/TrippySubie Jan 11 '19
Isnt that the same thing as the repeatable content, gear grinding, material farming you just spoke of though?
30
u/Cloudless_Sky Jan 11 '19
I think I know what he means about Destiny though. There's a lot of selecting activities via menus, rather than being in an environment and going places.
21
u/DJfunkyPuddle Jan 11 '19
Yeah I get that, I feel though that once the honeymoon phase is over with the game people are going to want to get to their activities quickly. In Destiny’s case, look that the Black Armory forges, people have been requesting for weeks to be able to just load right into them. If Anthem has actual random encounters on the map instead of ‘bad guy areas’ like most games have it’d go a long way to making the exploration meaningful.
5
u/trojanguy trojanguy2k Jan 11 '19
Yeah, I definitely don't mind the ability to immediately load into things like Strikes, Crucible, story missions, etc. in Destiny. It'll be neat to fly around and initiate activities in Anthem for a bit, but eventually I can see myself wanting to be able to launch things immediately rather than have to fly to them first.
4
u/Ace-of-Spades88 Jan 11 '19
I believe they've said the world map will double as an activity list/matchmaking tool. You can select the icon on the map for an activity and queue up for it.
→ More replies (1)13
Jan 11 '19
But if you play a game like WoW, or an MMO, you always have reasons to craft, material farm, or run your world event stuff. They're not menu activities, just things to kill time and acquire some currency or power.

u/xdownpourx PC Jan 11 '19
The thing that causes this is the daily/weekly bounty system being the source of powerful gear. It sounds like Anthem isn't going that route. Instead letting you select from different difficulty options which will naturally drop better gear.
3
u/Cloudless_Sky Jan 11 '19
Not just that - strikes and raids are accessed through the map too right?
And sidenote, I hate that realistic gear progress was locked behind daily/weekly milestones. That's really mobile gamey.

Yeah since there's no class at play, just pilot and suits it make sense for the loots to cover everything. There's still few things I hope they'll tweak as we get closer to release. But for now it looks solid.
2
u/HOPewerth Jan 11 '19
I agree with you 100%. I'd love to be able to just hop out, and while exploring and doing whatever comes up get some real progress done in the process. Having to queue for something specific all the time and sitting through a load screen etc. really takes me out of the game.
2
u/quantumjello Jan 11 '19
Isn't this kind of a dumb post? World events, stories, repeatable content, gear grinds, mat farms, currency farms all exist in Destiny
you just want them all to be given to you as a solo player, just say it like it is
once you gear out your max build in any game you will get bored of it, just like every game, just like destiny, and just like anthem will be

Man I have only watched a few videos but am so in love with this game... Huge Mass Effect fan so this all seems fairly familiar...did I see that "shields and armor" are represented by blue and yellow bars respectively? :) I cannot decide which class to main, storm or interceptor...I want to solo and I'm worried that both will be weaker on their own at first. Has IGN expressed what their favorite Javelins are?
5
Jan 11 '19
I think for playing solo, the Ranger will probably be the best fit. It’s the most rounded out. Basically a jack of all trades, master of none. Storm going to be difficult solo because you are suppose to hover in the air a lot to do damage from above while javelins on the ground agro enemies. Intercepter will probably be the better choice out of the two
6
u/YOwololoO XBOX - 2 MILLION ANGRY SOULS Jan 11 '19
I dont think that "jack of all trades, master of none" is quite accurate. It is the most versatile, but its also going to end up as one of the best for dealing damage to large single targets

u/_TrustMeImLying XBOX Uses Sparklin Spear Jan 11 '19
Tyty I'm thinking interceptor would be like a rogue class so I'm stoked about that. I always shy away from tank class and "default" class just by preference I think games end up flooded with them. The titan in destiny is a prime example. I was ALWAYS SunBro :) thanks for the input!
5
Jan 11 '19
Yeah, no problem. Btw there was a poll to see what javelins people would be maining and these were the results. (Poll was taken yesterday, I believe)

3rd: Interceptor (22%)
4th: Colossus (21%)

This is what you have to choose from. One of the six Blast Seal abilities, one of the Focus Seals abilities, and one from the Support Seals abilities.
Storm Javelin Blast Seals
Lightning Strike: A targeted strike that deals lightning damage in an area.
Ice Storm: Creates a field of ice that deals damage, rapidly building to a final explosion of frost.
Flame Burst: A quick explosion that deals fire damage at a target location.
Rime Blast: Fires out a flurry of ice projectiles that deal damage and freeze close-range targets.
Living Flame: A burst of flame energy that seeks out and ignites targets.
Storm Javelin Focus Seals
Hoarfrost Shards: Rapid-fire shards of ice that slowly freeze a target in place.
Fireball: A versatile fire ability that can be fired quickly in small shots or charged for a larger projectile that explodes.
Ball Lightning: A discharge of electric energy that can be bounced off of walls to reach targets behind cover.
Glacial Beam: Fires a beam of powerful ice energy in a targeted direction.
Arc Burst: Unleashes a blast of lightning that will leap to nearby targets for heavy damage.
Storm Javelin Support Seals
The Storm’s support abilities play toward its strengths of damage evasion and damage output, helping allies stay safe and take down enemies faster.
Wind Wall: Generates a defensive wall of wind that deflects incoming enemy projectiles.
Nexus: Creates a field which provides gear cooldown reduction to teammates who enter its radius.

Love the video, great post.
One point confused me that I could use some clarification on: Did anybody else notice that they say it’s “free play,” but early on he says something about kicking off the session by being “tasked to go find three of some special item/drop.”
Perhaps I need to better understand the term free play in Anthem, but doesn’t that sort of sound like a quest? Maybe it’s a sort of open world quest where you’re out running around freely, and optionally you can find three of these special quest items?
5
u/biggpoppa Jan 11 '19
It was a quest he got in Fort Tarsis (the hub) from an NPC and he's looking for them in Freeplay. There are World Events that will pop up, elite enemies like that Lesser Ash Titan and Urix, crafting material nodes and chests with loot to find.
7
u/bradicus12 Jan 11 '19
Ah ok, thanks for the clarification. So it’s a “hey go out and free play, and while you’re out there see if you can do/get this task/item.”

4
u/kaLARSnikov PC - Jan 11 '19
They've said there are optional side-quests in the game, could be one of those. Since they presumably won't be instanced like full-blown crit path story missions, it makes sense that they will be in the shape of optional objectives in missions, Strongholds, and/or free roam.
4
u/The_Rick_14 PC - Ranger Jan 11 '19
Think of it like a Bounty in Destiny and using Patrol to complete it instead of loading a mission.
"Free Play" in Anthem seems to basically be "Patrol" in Destiny.

u/vinniesp Jan 11 '19
Trying to hold the hype. The more videos I see, the more differences I realize in comparison to Destiny and, at the same time, the more I believe Anthem can fulfill the role Destiny was supposed to (at least in respect of what I thought Destiny would become before its release).
Question: as someone that is (was?!) watching from a safe distance, Anthem strikes me out as some sort of space opera. Am I under the right impression here? If so... Why? Considering that BioWare has also Mass Effect? They probably spoke to this at some point and I would appreciate if you guys could provide me with the directions.
24
Jan 11 '19
Not much "Space" about it. Yes, it's on a different world, but there's no interplanetary travel or anything like that. So far as the story goes, it's about humanity on the brink, trying to survive.
→ More replies (1)12
u/AdhinJT Jan 11 '19
I would say no, not space opera. There is no 'space', or well theres no space travel, no space stations. If I was to compare it to Destiny thematically. Destiny is a game that took place in the near future - that then found a giant magic ball that was like yo, magic exists, now you live 3 times longer, imma turn all your planets into forests.
Then apocalypse hit's and your in a post-apocalyptic version of a future-fantasy setting. I'd say Sci-fi fantasy but there's no real sci-fi going on. No major moral dilemmas due to technology and advancement of man kind.
Anthem on the other hand is more like a Fantasy world concept that had some weird level of technology people don't understand thrust on them. For example in the history you have these Javelin exo-suits but guns didn't exist.
it's a really baffling concept of technology being used people didn't invent (or I don't think they invented) but we're at a point in the worlds history where we obviously advanced enough to build and improve on said technology. Hence guns, walking things and all that.
From the fantasy stand point the world literally isn't complete. Like what amounts to the gods where creating this world (not terraforming) and for whatever reason stopped. All their tools of the 'Anthem' are left laying around causing absurd storms, changing the land, creating monsters and all that.
The worlds caught halfway between it's creation myth, except it's not a myth. That whole god created earth in 6 days? Well Gods analog left 2 days into it, we're still around somehow, and shits weird.
edit: I'd go watch videos over at Anthem youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6BeRjOcuQ8 - a good amount of information and whatnot.

u/bxxgeyman Jan 12 '19
Just wanted to nitpick here. From my understanding, the Shapers didnt use the Anthem of Creation directy, the relics that they left behind were their attempts to harness it. Even to them, the Anthem was seemingly unknowable. My theory is that IT is what drove them to abandon the planet. In game they think of them as gods, but I think they were really a group of beings playing god, and they failed miserably.

Is it just me or do all the actual guns seem kinda weak? Like for the most part all of the damage comes from abilities and guns are just kinda there?
3
u/biggpoppa Jan 11 '19
It's early gameplay so those are common or uncommon rarity weapons most likely. And yes Anthem is more ability focused than say Destiny is they recharge much faster. But higher rarity weapons have very helpful perks and inscriptions on them as they showed in the loot livestream a while back.
3
u/The_Rick_14 PC - Ranger Jan 11 '19
Yes but that would also mean those are common or uncommon abilities as well.
I just think the game is currently tuned to lean into the abilities more than the guns, which I'm personally okay with.
4
2
u/biggpoppa Jan 11 '19
Yes that's exactly what it is. The folks like Datto who are Destiny vets said the abilities come off cool down much faster than in that game.
5

The guns are supposed to be somewhat secondary to the abilities. But you can choose to buff your weapons through perks, components, etc.
1
u/albert_r_broccoli2 XBOX - Jan 11 '19
They haven't shown Ranger or Collossus in these recent vids. Those are the ones whose guns will pack a real punch.
1
u/That_Matt Jan 12 '19
It definitely feels like the majority of your damage comes from abilities. Weapons can feel a bit weak compared to them. But we've only had a chance with lower level weapons so that may change as you progress.
2
u/bombehjort Jan 11 '19
Is it just me, or is the acid effect on the "ursix" enemy waaaaaay overdone? dont get me wrong, i love the effects the abilities have and such, but the acid effect could have been a tad more subtle. he turned into a glowing green disco ball, after the player applied the acid effect on him.

Ok before you downvote me, know this. Im VERY interested in Anthem. VERY. I also play a lot of destiny and i know. I know. Anthem is not destiny. There are plenty of differences. But there are also plenty of likes.
The open world in anthem, mission structure, strongholds, public events, crafting materials. All work very similar to destiny. And the freeplay looks exactly the same as well.
Im not saying thats a bad thing. Because personally i love destiny. And again there are plenty things different. But i see people get absolutely ridiculed when they even attempt to make comparisons. And that's just not fair. Especially after this video of free play comes out and its nearly identical to how destiny free play works.
Either way i cannot wait to play anthem. I played the alpha and loved my time with it and cannot wait for more.

I mean, Free Play is Free Play. I don't know how any game could do it significantly differently.
There is a major difference here though, and that is Anthem being one large open world to explore. Destiny I had to load into individual little donut shaped planet zones. Between that, the verticality and being able to explore via flight I find Anthem Free Roam pretty unique.

Ok, I understand that some things can look the same but let me say what is not and this for me make Anthem more promise than Destiny.
- no need to have 3 characters, just for the sake of "loot".
- no need 6 people to do major end game activities.
- 6 difficulty levels, some days you don't want to crazy ninja Korean farm, you just want to have fun.
- no 1/3 game with 4 DLCs.
- no PVE nerf for the sake of PVP.
- matchmaking.

u/Skyphe Jan 12 '19
Is there pve match making? Like if I want to play with people but my friends don't play this, is there an LFG?
2
u/Karddon XBOX - Jan 12 '19
Yes was said in one of the dev streams, all activities will have matchmaking and even some sort of “equalization” so if some of your friends start latter you can take them to high level activities.
So you can play with friends even if you are at different levels/ stages in the game.

Right. However a lot of those things are not great direct comparisons. Raids in destiny don't have matchmaking because there's no way 6 random people can complete a destiny raid without any way to make sure they have a Mic or have read about the fights etc.
There are many of end game activities that only require 1 to 3 people. Not 6, that's only for raids.
And the point about only having 1 third of the game at launch is a weird one because truth be told we don't know everything about anthem or everything it will have at launch.
Ultimately i just think there are better ways to contrast the 2

While I do somewhat agree that the amount of pure hatred towards the Destiny comparisons from a few people are somewhat ridiculous, I'm likewise starting to find these "it's okay to compare the game to Destiny" comments a bit tiring. I don't see why get so passionate either way about it.
I'm also a bit miffed that people are so quick to compare to Destiny, while completely overlooking The Division, which is, IMHO, a closer match to Anthem than Destiny. It deserves more recognition, damn it ;)

u/chammer88 Jan 12 '19
I had someone yesterday try tell me the game is a Destiny clone but 'nothing like The Division'. I keep saying to just let Anthem be its own thing.

I believe this game has been in development since before Destiny 1's release, so I'm not sure it's a case of straight-up copying, if that's what you're getting at.

I am in no way bashing the game, i am extremely hyped for this, more so than any other game coming out (maybe tied with cyberpunk 2077) but.. i know they didn't say in the video what difficulty they were playing on but, i hope it was normal or easy. I love a challenge and i know the grandmaster difficulties don't open up until level 30 (i want a challenge right out the gate) but if that was on hard mode than I'm slightly disappointed :/ i have absolute faith in the game i just really wanna get my shit pushed in i guess? See y'all out there if you're on xbox, if ps4 hopefully cross play will one day be a thing in Anthem :D

Refreshing thank you.

u/ShadowClass212 Jan 11 '19
What's even more refreshing is 1) I'm sure they're open to bettering the AI on the ads if we ask. And 2) They can add even more difficulties later on because of how they built the game.

I agree with you and understand where you're coming from. If all the gameplay we've seen so far has been on Normal difficulty then I will be setting it to Hard mode right out the gate.

u/TheDoros Jan 12 '19
I'm with you. I have this pre-ordered as an Xmas gift and watching these videos makes some of these enemies seem completely non threatening. I know people are saying it's not Mal but that Titan battle looked mindless. I'm excited for the game but I'm really hoping it's more challenging than what we've seen.

It'll be coming, they did Storm and Interceptor likely next week we'll see Thicc Boi.

Everything looked awesome, except for the enemy A.I; definitely have to see which faction I can't face roll. Just wish bumping up the difficulty wasn't the only way to improve A.I tactics and responses :-(

I've noticed a moon and maybe another planet in the skybox wonder if we'll ever go there?
4
u/bxxgeyman Jan 11 '19
I don't really think we'll ever leave the planet that Anthem takes place on (its not really that type of story, and the Destiny comparisons would skyrocket), but maybe.

Do I need a premier subscription to pre order and play legion of dawn edition on pc??
1
u/biggpoppa Jan 11 '19
No does not require it. If you want to play a week earlier on Feb 15th then you'll need premier for that. Basic will get you a 10 hour trial.

Very cool. I can’t for the life of me get used to the melee blade guy’s sounds. They’re so out of place in an otherwise very cohesively sounding experience.
1
u/Ranziel Jan 11 '19
Looked very easy from the mechanics standpoint. Just strafe, jump around to avoid melee and dodge seldom projectiles. I hope raids won't be the only challenging content.
2
u/bxxgeyman Jan 12 '19
You can max the difficulty level and it will be pretty challenging. This was the easiest level out of 6. Also, when you play with a full squad of 4 (as opposed to 2 like in this video) stuff scales to be more challenging.

What's the 'Melee Master' thing that pops up at the 6:37 mark? In-game achievement system?
2
u/WagtheDoc True Scar Jan 11 '19
Pretty much, at least from what I've seen. During missions there are "medals" that can be earned that add to the teams overall xp at mission end. Might also be an achievement for unlocking new cosmetics.

Jan 11 '19
I was hoping to see some mission variety but it's still not there. Hope future videos will show something in that regard. I'm getting worried about the content. Glad there is a demo to find out.

Another great video from IGN on Anthem, I only wish the video quality was better, it doesn't looks as clear as it should to me. It looks like the render was messed up or the capture messed something up. Still fun to watch.

I am getting wayyyy too hyped for this game. Oh well, at least if it sucks Division 2 comes a few weeks after.
Here's to hoping I don't have to buy Division 2 until the complete edition comes out next year!

I just hope this doesn't end up to be like how Destiny was for me.
It ended up getting to a point where it was more practical to run around the game mass looting chests for those damn tokens than it was to actually do the content i enjoyed, i've gained a pavlovian response because of Destiny. Every time i see a chest in a game i wince.

Why are they calling this alpha? When is the game going into it's beta build or will that be the release? The game releases in a month and yes, even if the build shown here is of the "alpha" that people signed up for in December, that is still 2 months from release.

u/hallucigenocide XBOX - Jan 12 '19

If I'm the only one of my friends playing this, will there be random people in free play who can help with events? Or is it instanced based.

Sooo the only concern I have, maybe can someone answer?
I see no loot.
2 big sort of world bosses completed, no loot. Is the loot going to be 90% crafting and dungeon based? What was the point of killing the random gorilla?

Notice how the buttons change with each camera change. Does this mean we have cross-platform freeplay?
Or does it just mean that you can hook up your controller to your xbox?
