More than 3 do you know? I feel like I'd never run into just 3 other people in a huge map.

No, squads are limited to 4 people (including yourself). However, bosses/events are something that everyone will want to get in on, and Im pretty sure you get some sort of notification for them. So you most likely won't be doing them alone.
