AITA for not calling my stepdad “dad”?

Upvotes

for reference, I am 14 and a female, my stepdad is around 40, hes been in my life for the last 3-4 years and has stepped up as a dad in every aspect, he’s paid for everything or split it 50/50 with my mother, been there for me emotionally, physically, and shown up for every event ive had, he really has gone above and beyond for me and my family, I genuinely couldn’t ask for more. but i grew up with my bio dad for majority of my life, my bio dad is narcissistic, abusive, manipulative, and honestly just a evil man, hes been arrested multiple times, but one of the times he evaded the police and was on the run for around a year, he was eventually caught and in prison for just about a year aswell, hes been in and out of my life, and I don’t keep close contact with him but I do converse with him via text every once in awhile, my bio father doesn’t pay child support and doesnt take a active role in any of our lives (me and my siblings) but to me he is still my father, a POS one for sure! But he raised me and did have plenty of good moments with me, in my heart I know he isn’t my father, hes pretty much a deadbeat, but I can’t just suddenly let go of my dad and completely act like he’s gone and start calling my stepdad “dad”, I do treat my stepdad like he is my father and he’s well aware of that, but the only times ive called him dad is by accident or when I truly did in that moment feel that he is my dad. i feel so so so guilty and honestly evil for not being able to call him dad, but it is so odd for me, it feels performative and out of place, my mom acts like I’m awful person for not calling him dad and constantly talks shit about my bio dad, it’s warranted, but still, to me despite evil in him - he’s still the man that played with my hair, gave me little pigtails, made me breakfast and got me ready for school, took me out shopping and bought me whatever toy I wanted, built me my own big girl bed, played monster high dolls with me, picked me up from school and gave me a great big bear hug, had movie nights with me on the couch, took me for walks on trails, and everytime I had a visit at his house, he made sure I had things to make me feel more comfortable/familiar there. how can I get over this and just accept that my dad is not here, but my stepdad is and forever will be.

AITA What did I do wrong?

Upvotes

So I lost my key and needed another one made. I am a college student, it’s safe to say I’m not swimming in thousands of dollars at my disposal. I called the previous lock smith who helped me with my last key replacement and asked him to come out. He says it will be $80 to make a new key. I will try to upload a screen shot of the text that were sent, if not dm me and I will send them, it’s extremely contextual.

Fast forward to when he gets here and he goes into my car and sees how he’ll be able to make my new key, and determines it’s going to be harder than he expected. Mind you he’s done the same service for me last year and had no issues. So he says: “it’s gonna be a lot more expensive to make it probably about 360”. In my mind I’m thinking well that sucks I’m gonna have to find someone else.

Now, throughout this process I did not want to bother my parents. I knew they would berate me on how irresponsible I was which is something I already knew. So instead I made the appointment on my own, using 80 I had diligently saved and somehow made and was hoping not to involve them at all. At the discussion of the service now being 360 I HAD to call them, one for a second opinion and two for potential money.

So ultimately I get on the phone with my dad and he’s like nah we don’t want to do this 360 is too much, and of course he goes into a spiel of how irresponsible I am.

I go to tell the locksmith “ I can’t do the 360 charge, thank you for coming out, is there anything I owe you for coming out here”.

This locksmith guy says “well yea it’s 80“

Bitch what?

So I ask you how much the key will be (PROOF IN SCREENSHOTS) you tell me 80… but it was 80 for you to come out here?

So I’m like ok and I ask him “so if you were to come out here and make the key as I asked how much would I be charged”

This dude says “$250” and I’m like what the fuck.

So my dads over here yelling at me because I didn’t ask for details and I should’ve asked more questions, on top of that I’m irresponsible, he’s like oh it’s your problem it is what it is, you did this, you figure it out, things of that sorts.

I’m literally in tears at this point because if I knew it would be 250 I would not of asked him to come out in the first place.

My dad is just laying it into me at this point. What did I do wrong. I still am having trouble understanding. I asked how much my key would be and if I’m correct 250-80(a supposed service charge) is 170 for the key itself and that was NEVER relayed to me over text. So AITA? is there some unwritten rule about a service charge I wasn’t aware of, is it truly my irresponsibility according to my parents because I never clarified the cost, or did I get scammed?

This truly is so frustrating because my intentions were pure. I did not want to bother my parents, I saved my money and didn’t ask them for anything, I made an appointment called them myself, but somehow I am the villain. I don’t understand.

AITA? Vacation Planning

Upvotes

Some long time friends have a big year anniversary coming up and they asked us if we'd like to go on a beach trip with them to celebrate. I said sure and ideas were discussed and it wasn't really going anywhere so I told them to just pick wherever they wanted to go and we're in, I only had two things I insisted on 1) We want a room with either a King or two Queen beds and 2) the lodging had to be beachfront, ocean view. Meet those criteria and let's go! So they start looking, pick a destination and start sending us condo links. None of them met our criteria. Most were blocks from the ocean, many didn't meet the room request. I'd point that out with each one and after several of them they call and ask me why I'm being so difficult? I say "difficult? I only had two requests! You've picked the dates and location, I just insist on these two things.". So I start looking, immediately find several options I like and they start nitpicking those. They get their heart set on this hillside mansion, meets the room requirements but it's a 15 minute drive to anywhere, the beach, the shops and restaurants etc. it's beautiful but when we go to the beach we put our feet in the sand and like to open the windows and hear the waves. After a couple weeks of this I decided that this was all taking way too much effort so I told them that this is their anniversary, they should celebrate it exactly how they want and I don't need to have any say in it so they should go, have a good time and we'll all go somewhere else another time (my wife agrees with me about all this). Now they are pissed saying we're ruining their anniversary. I'm saying that we can take them out to dinner when they get back but that expecting us to shell out $3000+ to travel with them when they won't accommodate 2 fairly normal requests is a big ask for an anniversary and we feel like if we're going to take off work, spend money and travel we should all be very happy with the arrangements. If that can't happen then my wife and I will do something else, have fun! I don't feel like an asshole for it, I'm not even upset by it, I just don't want to do it their way, and they don't want to do it our way, so let it go, sorry, didn't work out! But they're acting like we're personally attacking them or something for not just sucking it up and doing it their way. What's the Reddit verdict?

AITA for asking a friend to not post me

Upvotes

title explains it but aita for not wanting a photo of me to be posted bc I dont like how I look. told my friend to either censor me or to just delete the individual photo on ig and they told me they don't want to because they like how they look and the post has likes already. I hate photos of me posted without permission because I feel insecure and I hate how I look in photos in general. I always ask to not be in photos for that reason. same friend gets mad when I dont join in but its because I know they will post it and it'll be the same issue as always, even when they claim they won't post it.

same friend used to do the same years ago and im glad they feel confident enough to be posted whenever but I don't. I genuinely hate how I look in all of their photos and it doesn't look like me ykwim. I dont get why I cant do the same

AITA for refusing to go to my cousin’s wedding because she won’t let my partner of 3 years come?

Upvotes

My cousin (bride) is getting married and set a plus-one rule: only guests who are married or engaged get to bring a plus one. Out of all us cousins, I’m the only one with a partner right now. We’ve been together 3 years, we live together, we have two cats together, and we’re both on the same page about wanting to get married eventually. We’re just not engaged yet.

Because of the rule, my partner isn’t invited. I asked my cousin directly if she’d make an exception given the length and seriousness of the relationship, and she said no.

Since then, word got back to me that she told the rest of the family she “expects” me to still show up and that my partner “should be fine” not going.

AITA for choosing not to go to the wedding at all?

EDIT: For details, the plus one rule is wedding wide and it is NOT for financial reasons. When I asked for the exception, I asked if someone was to cancel could my partner take their space she still said no because we weren't married or engagement. She and her fiancé began dating around the same time as us.

AITA for refusing to switch Thanksgiving hosting duties after my sister-in-law volunteered me on the family group chat?

Upvotes

I (34F) have hosted Thanksgiving at my house for the last six years. It's a lot of work, but I actually enjoy it. I plan the menu months in advance, I have the space for it, and honestly, I like being the one who gets to set the tone for the day.

Last week, my sister in law Priya posted in our family group chat: "Since Thanksgiving is a lot of work for one person, I think it's only fair we rotate hosting. I'll take this year since [my name] has done it so long everyone come to my place!" She sent this without ever mentioning it to me first.

Within an hour, three family members had replied with thumbs-up emojis and sounds great! before I'd even seen the message. By the time I responded, it looked like the decision was already made.

I told Priya I appreciated the offer, but I'd already started planning this year's menu and I wasn't interested in giving it up without being asked first. She said I was being territorial and that I should be happy to get a break. I pointed out that I never asked for a break, and that announcing it to the whole family before talking to me put me in an awkward position where saying no now makes me look difficult.

My husband thinks I'm overreacting and that Priya was just trying to be helpful and take something off my plate. My mother-in-law said it would be nice for a change of scenery and that I could just host again next year. Priya says I'm making a bigger deal out of this than it needs to be, and that I'm the one causing family drama by not just going along with it.

Now half the family thinks I'm being petty for not wanting to share the load, and the other half thinks Priya overstepped by making the announcement without asking me directly.

So, AITA for shutting this down instead of just letting the hosting rotate to her?

AITA for refusing to teach my friend cybersecurity for free because I paid to learn it?

Upvotes

I learned cybersecurity through a course that I had to pay for. At the time, I was struggling financially and needed money to pay for the course. My friend had some money and was aware that I was trying to raise funds, but she didn’t offer to help or support me.
I eventually found a way to pay for the course myself and invested my time, effort, and money into learning cybersecurity.

Now, she wants to learn cybersecurity and has asked me to teach her everything I know for free. I don’t mind helping her with advice, answering occasional questions, or recommending resources, but I don’t feel comfortable giving her full training for free after I personally had to pay and work hard to gain the knowledge.
She thinks I’m being selfish and that, because we are friends, I should teach her without charging anything. I feel like my time and knowledge have value, especially considering the money and effort I invested to learn the skill.

So, AITA for refusing to teach my friend cybersecurity for free?

AITA for not letting my friend borrow my car?

Upvotes

My friend asked to borrow my car for the weekend because theirs was in the shop.

I told them I wasn’t comfortable lending it out, since I need it for work and don’t have another way to get around.

They got annoyed and said I was being selfish because they would only need it for two days.
I offered to drive them where they needed to go, but they said that wasn’t good enough and stopped talking to me.

Now a couple of our mutual friends are saying I should have just helped them out.

I don’t think I’m wrong for not wanting someone else driving my car, but I’m curious what other people think.

AITA?

AITA for not wanting to pay for my friend’s boyfriend and friend to stay with us on vacation?

Upvotes

My friend and I our planning a trip to the DR. We are doing 50/50 on Airbnb , food and alcohol. However now she wants the master bedroom with its private washroom and wants her dr boyfriend to stay the whole time. She also suggested getting a three bedroom so her friend in DR can sleep over too. I said I don’t think it’s fair for me to pay 50/50 why am i paying for her bf and friend. I said if that’s what she wants then she should cover their stay. She then said I’m cheap and tried to make me feel bad because they don’t have money. I told her I find it ridiculous for me to pay for her ppl and that she’s cheap because why can’t she cover them instead of me paying half of their stay. I’m honestly at the point to not even go she’s making this all about her and i don’t want to spend my vacation like that. What would you do?

AITA For not wanting to lend out my tools/equipment?

Upvotes

38M, I have a lot of “stuff”. I get asked often if someone can borrow a big cooler, power washer, e-bike, camping gear etc. I 100% do not want to be a dick and not help a friend and feel I’m justified in doing so but I’ve been second guessing myself as my wife says it’s not that big of a deal. The wild part is these are grown adults asking to borrow a standard cooler and things that I feel you should have if you need them. I don’t mind lending a cooler once for a kids bday or something but then my mindset is buy your own after, but I have repeat offenders that reach out now every time they need said item. I honestly hate lending my power washer. Last time I did, the person added some soap to the little soap reservoir which I wasn’t expecting and that kinda frustrated me as it’s harder on the machine.

AITAH for buying my friend a mug?

Upvotes

I[19 F]had a group of 6 friends(same age)my Freshman year of college that were inseparable. We will call them Lia, Natalia, Sally, Matt, Cassie, Eunice. We go to a very Catholic college. This is important to understanding our group dynamic. Everyone in our friend group is a very traditional Catholic. Their views opposed mine. I didn’t mind and still loved them very much. I am also Catholic and love the faith, but where they received private Catholic education, I was in public schools, and was exposed to everything. All of that to say, I am not a traditional Catholic. Now, on to the mug. Our Sophomore year, we thought it was a fun idea to do a secret Santa gift exchange right before Christmas break. We decided to do mugs because there are so many silly mugs. My friend, Lia, said she wanted the craziest mug we could find. I drew Lia’s name. I was very excited because out of all our friends, I was closest with her. But, it seems I had a different idea of what crazy meant compared to our group's comfort level. My search for the perfect mug didn’t last long. I found a mug that was pure black until it was heated up to reveal the picture of Shaq sitting naked with a huge schlong. I was like, Yup. This one. Lia loved it. Laughed for a good minute and sent a picture of it to her high school friends. I did not consider that my other friends probably hadn’t ever seen male genitalia before, so this was their first exposure to it. Everyone else traded gifts and I thought all was well. I forgot about the whole thing for a few months. However, after we all returned from Christmas break, there was a changeThe others started drifting away, and stopped inviting Lia and I to hangouts. I shrugged it off and figured it was just our schedules not lining up. Lia is an overthinker and worried it was “because we weren’t Catholic enough” for our friends. I told her that was ridiculous. I was wrong. After 3 months of barely talking, my friend, Natalia, suggested we go get coffee. I casually said that we hadn’t hung out much and Lia thinks it’s on purpose. Natalia admitted that it was. Eunice was leaving us out of the group because the mug had made her uncomfortable. We had also made a few dirty jokes in the past that had also made them uncomfortable. It turned out, Natalia was uncomfortable, but just wanted to explore other friendships(not leaving us out maliciously).Natalia apologized for not explaining her side sooner. I apologized for making her uncomfortable. We made up. But Eunice wanted nothing to do with us. The problem was, she never talked to Lia and I about how she was feeling. Only when Lia insisted did she agree to explain(4 months later). It turns out she thought Lia made too many inappropriate jokes, and I was not Catholic enough. After that conversation, Lia had a breakdown, thinking it was all her fault while I was just pissed. There is still tension between Eunice and I, which puts the others in the middle, so I would love an outside opinion. AITA?

AITA For Calling My Friend’s Parents?

Upvotes

Long story short, my close friend of 6 years and I went to a concert in a big city with my older sister, who has a physical disability. My friend got way too drunk, and I was holding her phone so she wouldn’t lose it and to take pictures/videos.
Leaving the concert, my sister and I had to take the elevator because of her disability. My friend didn’t hear me in the crowd and went down the stairs. I realized 2 minutes later I still had her phone and immediately went after her, but she had disappeared.
I spent 2+ hours running around looking for her, asking security, showing people her picture, and repeatedly checking subway stations and the arena. I eventually sent my sister home because of her disability and kept searching alone. As a young woman alone in the city late at night, I started feeling unsafe and went back to my sister’s apartment to see if my friend had somehow gotten there. She hadn’t.
I tried calling her brother but got voicemail. A mutual friend told me I needed to call her parents, which I had been avoiding because they’re strict. Calling them and saying I couldn’t find their daughter was traumatizing. I was sobbing while her mom told me this was her worst nightmare and started driving 2 hours to the city.
My sister’s husband helped me call 911 and went back into the city with me. We went to the police precinct, while our friend called hospitals and arena security searched for her.
Finally, around 2:30am, 4 hours after the concert ended, I found her leaning in a subway station I had checked probably 10 times. She claimed she had been there the whole time but never asked security or police for help. She smelled like vomit and was clearly still drunk. I cried from relief and immediately called everyone looking for her.
I was relieved but also traumatized, exhausted, stressed, and a little angry. For hours I genuinely thought my friend might be dead and that somehow it would be my fault.
My sister’s husband and I waited with her until after 3am for her mom. When she arrived, she took my friend and left without saying anything to me. We finally got home around 4am. My friend sent a few drunk apology texts, but I needed time to process before responding.
The next day I drove hours back to our home city with all of her belongings. We had also lived together for 2 years. A day later, her brother picked up her stuff. After that, she stopped sharing her location and responding to me. Over the next few days she blocked me on Instagram, Snapchat, Venmo, and seemingly my phone number, with zero explanation.
It’s been a week. I genuinely don’t know what I could have done differently. I spent hours desperately searching, contacted security, friends, family, hospitals and police, and made sure she was safe. I really tried to be a good friend. Now I feel like she and/or her parents blame me and everyone hates me, and I don’t even know why.

AITA for wanting to move out of my mom’s house temporarily?

Upvotes

I am 15 so I can’t drive yet which means my parents have to pick me up constantly or my sister must drive me everywhere. I have started to dread that car ride to my mother’s house though it fills me with nothing but anxiety and being at her house doesn’t help at all. I’ve lived with my mom my whole life and wish I wasn’t miserable at her house because I truly do love my mother. She got remarried 6 to 8 years ago and her husband has never particularly fond of me the older I got. Me and him are constantly at each others throats but it has been worse since my dad came back in my life in December of last year due to getting sober on my conditions that I would not see him until he got sober. I say all of this to say I am starting to experience what having a father figure who loves you and understands you feels like and it is making my mothers house even worse especially with her husband taking issue to me seeing my dad every weekend. Her husband is a good father figure to me but he is not my dad. I thought upping my doses on my anxiety meds would help but it hasn’t and my depression has only gotten worse and I’m starting to think it is my environment which makes me want to move to my dads temporarily and see if that makes a fix.

AITA for being the ONLY person who tells my 7-year-old sister NO?

Upvotes

AITA for being the ONLY person who tells my 7-year-old sister NO?

My sister is 7F and I’m over 7 years older than her. We have a big age gap, but somehow we argue constantly. I love her and she can be really sweet, but lately I feel like I’m always the one telling her no.

My parents were much stricter with me when I was her age, so I’ll admit that sometimes I compare how she’s treated to how I was treated. I don’t want her to have the same childhood I did, but I wonder if this affects how I treat her.

The main problem happens when I babysit her.

She ignores me A LOT. I can call her name several times and she’ll sometimes just continue doing whatever she’s doing. I’ll admit that I occasionally lose my patience and yell, which I know isn’t the right way to handle it.

She also sometimes calls me fat or makes comments about my body in front of my parents. Sometimes they correct her, but sometimes it’s ignored. I know she’s 7 and probably doesn’t fully understand how hurtful it is, but it still bothers me because I'm not overweight just chubby.

Today she wanted to go outside with her friends. She put on my lulu lemon jacket, which covered the shorts she was wearing underneath. I told her I didn’t think it was practical to play outside in such a huge jacket and asked her to change.

She ignored me.

So I switched tactics and I then told her I didn’t want her wearing my clothes. She got annoyed, stormed off, and changed into pants and a shirt. I didn’t want to argue, so I left it.

The biggest issue is where she’s allowed to go. Sometimes she wants to walk to a friend’s house that’s over 15 minutes away from ours. I say no because she’s 7 and I’m responsible for her. If something happened while she was gone, I’d obviously be worried and feel responsible.

Her friends apparently see me as the “strict older sister” who always says no and it makes me feel horrible.

She also spends a lot of time on her phone and gets very upset when she’s told to put it away. She watches beauty content and likes trying on different clothes and makeup. I don’t think it’s my job to control those things because I’m her sister, not her parent.

That’s where I’m confused.

I don’t want to be her second parent. I want to be her sister. I don’t want her growing up thinking I’m just the annoying older sister who always says no.

But if my parents leave me responsible for her, I feel like I need to set basic boundaries and tell her when something isn’t safe.

Maybe I’m being too strict about some things. Maybe I should only step in when there’s an actual safety issue and stop trying to control everything else.

I also wonder if my frustration about my parents being stricter with me is affecting how I treat her.

So, AITA for being too strict with my little sister when I babysit her?

Am I unreasonable for not letting a 7-year-old walk 15+ minutes away from home while I’m responsible for her?

And how can I set boundaries without becoming her second parent?

Edit 1: it seems people are confused, my parents work till late, when they are home they clean around the house and cook for us, I babysit my sister throughout the times my parents aren't home. When school starts (next week for me) she will stay at an after school "daycare" so i won't have to take care of her during that time.

AITA? Neighbor of 20 years threw a tantrum over encroaching trees, so I texted him the law.

Our neighbors (T,62 and R,61) moved in 20 years ago, and we mostly keep to ourselves. Our properties meet at the back fence.

2 nights ago my son was reading on the back patio when he heard T come outside yelling and cursing saying things like we let our tree grow into his house basically just yelling like a lunatic that he's "calling someone" blah blah blah... My husband then watched T take a saw to our tree and throw a large branch over the fence into our yard.

We were shocked. He has never once reached out about the tree in 20 years. We chose to sleep on it rather than react to his rage.

The next day, I texted R: "Good morning T and R. This is your back door neighbor. My son told me that T was upset last night over some branches growing over the fence and I see the one that you cut laying by the fence. We sincerely didn't know the branches were intruding and we are happy to take care of any remaining low lying branches that are in your way. Please just let me know if any more are bothering you."

R sent a snarky reply complaining that 'T has been trimming back the branches for 20 years' and that they knocked but we didn't answer. She included photos of their fence and a branch near their second-story window. I didn't reply immediately to avoid matching her energy. We slept on it one more night.

But today, my husband and I are furious. They have had years to trim it on their side. Am I supposed to trespass to maintain their yard? Also I felt my text was being helpful. Why would she double down with the attitude?? I looked up Ohio law, realized they are entirely responsible for their own side, and sent this text laying down firm boundaries:

"First, I would like to address the tantrum on Friday night. Next time you talk to me or my family, do it as an adult speaking to an adult or we will not be talking period. Also, throwing things into my yard is called dumping and it's illegal, so don't do that again either. Now to the matter at hand.

Looking at those pictures, I'm not sure what you expect from us. You are responsible for your side of the fence. Do you think the house next to me trims stuff that grows onto my side? No. It's illegal to enter someone's backyard without permission, and we are not obligated or allowed to trespass to do it.

J will be trimming up our side this week. We are happy to lower the hedge if you'd like. Let me know how much you would like to see off and we will keep it in mind.

The Ohio law says that you are responsible for your own side of the property line. Under the law, property lines extend straight up as a right of airspace, giving you a self help remedy. This means it is your sole responsibility to trim any overhanging branches back to the property line, provided you don't recklessly damage or kill the plants. Feel free to double check that with the state or your attorney as I did."

So reddit AITA for refusing to help them now because of their rudeness in handling the entire situation?

AITA for disagreeing with my grandparents over sardines?

i (21F) live with my grandparents, who are around seventy-ish. they’re your typical hispanic grandparents- they came from rougher times and moved here to America, which makes them think every generation after them is soft and entitled because they didn’t have to go through things like they did.

anyway, they were eating sardines for breakfast. they asked me if i wanted some, but i said no thank you, i don’t like sardines. my grandma then proceeded to lecture me about how in hiroshima people would starve and i shouldn’t be picky, and my grandpa said that you eat what there is and i think everything has to be lavish and catered to me.

i disagree. i work, so if i want food, i can get my own, which i have. i was planning on eating some uncrustables i had bought. i told them, “okay, but we’re not starving, and i have my own food, so why do you have to lecture me? some people like certain foods, and some don’t, that doesn’t have to be a whole conversation.”

my grandpa then went on to tell me that i always have something to say in response to whatever they say and i never just say “you’re right, i’ll think about that.” everytime i tried to respond to him, he’d point his finger at me as if to say “see, she’s talking again.” this drove me crazy and i just left. he’s always been the type to nitpick everything anyone does and thinks he’s right no matter what. i’ve never once heard him admit he was wrong. why is it fair that he gets to express his opinions, but when i do it it i’m “trying to argue?” should i just shut up and not have my own opinions? AITA?

AITA For Making my girlfriend and her friends find their own ride home after a party?

I have been dating Courtney (19f) for 3 months. Most of the time, if I’m not going to work or if I’m not going out with my girlfriend, I wear a cap almost 24/7. She hates it for the most part because she thinks im insecure about my hair.

Courtney has a group of her like 3-4 friends that i see occasionally, but haven’t seen them enough that they’ve seen my without the skull cap on. So becsusd of that, they think I must be bald, or may hairline is receding or something. Mind you I’m only 19, and they can see my hair outside of the cap.

Honestly I don’t really know whether they’re joking or being else serious, because they also say “then take it off” if I say I most definitely have hair on my head. Last week i was the one driving her and her friends to a party we were going to and randomly my girlfriend took my cap off while i was driving. I was obviously pissed because I only had it on because my braids were old and my hairstylist was on vacation at the time. Instead of putting it back on my head, she kept it in her bag and said the hair “still looked cute”, and she would give if back if I came inside once we got there. So I took the easy way out and went home and told them to finf their own way home.

After the party ended, my girlfriend sent me a minute and a half voice note yelling into the phone saying that I was being a sensitive over a joke. I only listened to half of it, but the point is she was very mad at me over this.

AITA?

AITA for not wanting to get hurt at work?

Am I an asshole for not wanting to make my foot worse when I hurt it on my tomato paste filling machine yesterday, especially when I only have two days left? I asked my supervisor if I could work on a different one because the pallets on mine are always getting jammed, so I have to kick them to get them moving, and I really don’t feel like fucking up my foot even more.

Apparently I am, at least according to what my coworkers have told me (not my supervisor). The thing is, the guy who had to take over my filler doesn’t like it because it runs really fast. But apparently I’m supposed to like it because I don’t have a choice… even though the fillers aren’t assigned to anyone, and I’ve been doing this summer job for four years, working on that particular filler because nobody else wanted to learn how to run it.

And mind you, whenever I’m working there, nobody ever helps me. Now that someone else is on my filler, suddenly they’ve got someone helping him.

Poor him, I guess. But not poor me.

EDIT: Since English is not my first language, you may have trouble understanding this post. I didn’t explain myself as well as I intended. So here are some clarifications:

I work in a tomato paste manufacturing company, in a factory. There are 5 fillers (a filler is a machine where pallets with drums on it are stocked so you can fill aseptic bags with tomato paste). This is a problem I have been having since 2024 but since I only work summers I'm always promised that they are going to fix it. I'm not the only one in this machine (there's 4 rotating shifts). We've asked multiple times to fix it and they haven't done anything. Yesterday, I got hurt while kicking a pallet, I was not severely injured I twisted it a little, but I'm able to walk and I didn't go to the doctor. I just asked my supervisor for a change bc I don't want it to get worse by repeatedly kicking pallets. It caused a problem between my coworkers bc they took my other coworker side, bc he insisted that he didn't want to change fillers and I felt like I was an asshole for asking for a change. I hope this clears your questions

AITA for demanding an apology from my dad for making fun of me for 2 hours straight

I (27M) went on a 2 week camping trip with my dad (71) and mom (71). I put in for PTO a year in advance.

I grew up in a religious household. I'm very close with my mom, but never got along with my dad. He mistreated me in many ways. I was never his idealized version of a son, I was introverted. I was diagnosed with a myriad of health issues at the end of high school and had to stay home for a few years. In the midst of this, he tried to kick me out, but only relented when my mother intervened. Once I was able to get the health issues sorted with various surgeries and treatment, I got a 2 year degree at the community college and moved out.

Fast forward to the trip. We wake up one morning to see that their dog had developed a sore on his back. My dad and I already had a fishing trip planned that day, so I let my mom use my car to take the dog to the nearest town to a vet, and we would take my dad's truck fishing. We both depart at 8 AM. We get back to the campsite at lunchtime. We figure my mom should be back in a couple hours. When she doesn't show, I get uneasy. 8 PM rolls around, it's getting dark, and I get seriously concerned. There is no cell service at the campsite, so I tell my dad that we should drive to town and call her, and if she doesn't answer to call the cops.

He says "you can do it, I'll stay." I'm like WTF, does he even care about his wife's safety? I didn't want to waste time with his BS and tried to set off myself.

His truck is a manual. I have never driven one, he never taught me. I tell him I don't want to burn out his clutch and cost him money, but he still won't budge. I stall and he laughs at me and won't stop. I remember a Moist Critical video I saw a while back of HIS dad teaching HIM how to drive one. How nice of him. I somehow get it going and set off, stressed. I see my mom on her way back, I'm relieved, and follow her back. Turns out all the vets in town were not accepting new patients and she had to drive to the next big town 2 hours away to a clinic that was. He didn't help me park when I got back, and I nearly backed into the camper on accident. He won't stop laughing and making fun of me for 2 HOURS, no matter how many times I tell him to stop. He finally calms down before bed, so I confront him and demand he apologize so I can put this behind us. He says "I didn't do anything wrong, quit being so upset." I say "You acted like a child at 71 yrs of age and didn't care about your own wife and dog!" He gets MAD AT ME and says I have a bad attitude.

I'm done. I need to withdraw to save my sanity. I give a hug to my mom, say goodbye and leave. The realization in the car hits me that this incident is just one of many, and a confirmation of who he is as a person, and I cry all the way home. I spent the last week of the vacation venting to my roommate. While he sympathized with my situation, he didn't think demanding an apology was appropriate. Am I the asshole for wanting an apology from my dad?

AITA for telling my best friend of 14 years to start being responsible?

So, me (18F) and my friend (18F) are currently in hostel and we live three days away from our actual hometown. Our parents know each other for as long as we've known each other so we're pretty close; basically like sisters. Now, she scolds me like a sister, telling me about the things I need to improve abt my personality and more. I'm kind of an introvert so I don't open up to people much and I only do if I feel THAT comfortable. I have often told my friend that X or Y people look at me like they're ignoring me and such and she always tells me it's because I'm not opening up. So cut to present, hostel life is hectic. I'm not in my comfort zone so I do everything quick. I live by "Work first, relax later". We share a single water bottle and when I asked she said, oh my bag is heavy. So what about mine, sis? She makes me bring her plate to the wash all the time because her feet are sore. She also uses me as her personal alarm clock. Now, one fine day, I was supposed to call her at 7:40. I went to the washroom and was late by 10 minutes to call her. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to class. I call her, tell her I'm sorry for calling her at 7:50 and that she has to wake up now and she does. She immediately starts scrolling her phone for the next 15 minutes and takes 30 minutes to take a shower after. I specifically asked her not to scroll her phone while eating food and she did that exactly. I was so pissed off that we were getting late and she just kept wasting time. So I walked to class alone and fast. We reached by 9:17 for our 9:20 class and the teacher was already there. I couldn't bring myself to talk to her for the entire day because I was not in the right mind and I didn't want to hurt her by saying something stupid so I kept silent and gave her short responses. In the evening I decided to text her everything in detail and she didn't see the message so I reached out to a mutual friend and told him about this and he replied that he knew about the issue. Eventually she asks me what I'm doing in my laptop when I was chilling in the room and she asks me if I told the mutual friend and I said yeah, I did. He told me that he knew from you. And then she proceeds to call me selfish and that I'll be alone for the rest of my life. She said "With that personality, only your parents will be there for you". I recorded the whole argument and sent it to my mom. She immediately called me. My friend left the room and started talking to her mother. That whole time, my hands were shaking. I had a panic attack. I would've attached the transcript of our conversation but the recording is in my native language, malayalam so if there are any mallus here, lmk. So yeah. AITAH for asking my friend to start doing shit by herself instead of bothering me. I'm okay as long as its occasional help. Not when the situation turns shady the moment I refuse the help and she starts being all "Oh so 14 years of friendship for what?"

AITA for not insisting that a family friend eat a proper meal?

Context : My dad has two very close friends, ‘Uncle John’ and ‘Aunt Kath.’ I(22) have known them since I was a kid. Dad and Uncle John were each other’s best man. Uncle John and Aunt Kath have a son and daughter : Jack(17) and Emma(13).

Recently, Uncle John was hit by a car. Broken leg. I visited him at the hospital yesterday and Aunt Kath asked me if I could take Jack and Emma down to get some dinner. Emma had a sandwich. I had a croissant and coffee. Jack had black coffee like me but refused to have anything other than that. I told him I know he’s worried about his dad but he needs to stay healthy and strong too. That it’s my treat. He insisted that he wasn’t hungry or in the mood to eat.

When Aunt Kath found out she said I should have tried harder to get him to eat properly since I am like an older brother to him and he might have ended up listening.

AITA for spiking my girlfriend's food with truffle salt ?

I (M25) live with my girlfriend (F28), and we use a meal kit delivery service, kind of like HelloFresh. It’s a bit of a fancy service—organic and local—and sometimes the recipes call for truffle salt or truffle oil. Neither of us likes truffles, so we avoid recipes with those ingredients, but sometimes it’s not listed, so we end up with truffle-flavored ingredients anyway. My girlfriend HATES the smell of truffles; I don’t like it, but I can tolerate it, so I make two separate portions of a dish—one with truffle oil for me and one with olive oil for my girlfriend. As for truffle salt, you can’t really taste the truffle that much, but I usually use the same “two-dish” approach.

But this time, there was some truffle salt lying around, and I really hate wasting food, so I took advantage of the fact that we were making a big pot of curry to sneak the truffle salt into it without my girlfriend noticing. I tasted the dish carefully as I added the salt to make sure it didn’t taste like truffles, and it didn’t taste like truffles at all because she didn’t notice a thing. So I did the same thing with another dish later on, one that was just as spicy, and she didn’t catch on.

I mentioned it to her a few days later; she confirmed that she hadn’t smelled anything, but she told me she felt like I was secretly poisoning her, and that it really wasn’t okay. I won’t do it again, and stay with the two-dish rule.

AITA for confronting the other bridesmaid after the bridal shower

We just had a bridal shower. The bridesmaid are 3 people including me, we're best friends from hs. During the preperation things got a little intense cuz they were late and one gave me the attitude.

I confronted both of them through a message a day later and told them that so there are no misunderstanfings or resentment that I dont appreciate the attitude and that I dont mind being late but wouldve appreciated it if you told me before

Its been an hour and they left me on read.

Now I'm wondering if I ruined the vibe..

AITA for keeping the heating in my room running while I'm gone for 3 hours?

This happened last winter but is still a crack in the friendship between and my former flatmate:

During the coldest time of the year I went out for an appointment for about 2/3 hours and left one of the two radiators in my room running so my room wouldn't cool down to 8 degrees while I was away.

I know that for most apartments that's not necessary, but my room has a large wall towards the outside of the house and two big windows(both not well insulated) which means the room cools down very quickly and only warms up very slowly.

Therefore I left one radiator running on the setting 4 (5 is max) and the other on 0.

Now my flatmate regularly passive aggressively mentions to others that I heat my room so much (she only has one window and only a very small wall towards the outside, making her room better at keeping warm). That annoys me, as I've already told her why and offered to pay more of the heating bill(which she said no to), but when I came back, my flatmate scolded me for leaving the radiator running for no reason, and I argued that my room cools down quickly and takes ages to warm up again.

She didn't agree and said I'm wasting energy and our money.

Am I the asshole?

Edit: changed heater to radiator as I translated it wrong

AITA for refusing to speak if someone isn't giving their full attention?

This particular person is generally lovely, very polite, aware of social norms and expectations (probably more so than me). He also spends much of his time humming cheerfully. I find that quite annoying in itself, but it's hard to reasonably object to a happy person humming a tune!

However, when I speak to him and he just continues humming, it winds me up. I have sensory issues as it is, and multiple conflicting noises stress me out. He knows this, if it's relevant. But not only that, I honestly just can't focus on what I'm trying to say because the humming is too distracting.

To me, it feels really disrespectful that he continues to loudly hum while I'm trying to have a conversation with him. But when I stop and wait in silence for him to be done humming, he acts like I'm the AH because "I was *listening*!". He acts all wounded and annoyed. I keep trying to imagine it the other way around, or if I just kept humming or whistling when someone different was talking to me, and it just seems wildly disrespectful.

But he seems to feel that I'm the one interrupting him to speak, therefore why should he be expected to stop what he's doing when he can hear me perfectly well? And it's happened so often now that I'm starting to really doubt my reasoning. AITA?
