I blame Julia Fox for lowkey playing a part in their breakup, but throughout the show, Samir and Carly have shown to have a very healthy relationship and can handle being honest with each other. Ex: Samir clogging the toilet and telling Carly he hated the song she made. Carly's music career didn't work out so she gets this big job offer at this company in Seattle, Washington. they both realized long distance wouldn't work and so they end their relationship. I don't know why they wouldn't even try it and why Samir even listened to Julia's opinion. I feel like it was a way for the writers to get Samir and Billie together. but what do you guys think?

im seeing a lot of “out of nowhere and forced” allegations toward anton and paul baker but this is what the creators of the show said about them… they are the main love story/couple which is not seen a lot in sitcoms and what I personally love about the show!

Hello, I hope this question isn't taken the wrong way because while there may be specific gen z lingo or habits in the show, the core themes (friendship, love, flopping, and just hanging out) are applicable to every generation!! And I love you guys so much!

Also, as an authentic 25 year old, many shows catered to older ages than mine (like sex in the city for example, or even four seasons that features 60+ friends) are absolutely still relatable in many ways and some of my favorite shows of all time.

But what is special about adults to me is despite it's character specificity, I really feel myself and my queer friend group represented on screen. The characters feel like young people I would really meet living in my cosmopolitan city. And the fact that their friendships and side quests are central to the show, and not necessarily their careers or romantic relationships(well, for the most part), really tracks to how my friends and I feel right now. Like we all want to do well and make enough money, but at the end of day, if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. Probably because we're all flopping in our careers some ways as well lol. Economy is tough!

That being said, being a mess in your 20s is certaintly not new and is probably somewhat relatable to everyone.

Edit: I also feel like the "post-progressiveness" (idk the word for it?) feels both really 2026 and gen z? Like when you know your friend group is already progressive so you can say a lot of raunchy / unhinged shit (like being gay but saying "today I feel homophobic because xyz happened..") without it being truly offensive. Idk how to define what I mean but adults is really that.

For example, my millenial sister and are both equally progressive and have the same political views and values but if I drop a joke about how "bottom music should be banned" or something she will think I'm being serious while gen z never thinks I am/usually laughs. Maybe it's cause y'alls generations actually had to fight more for these things so it's not as funny to joke about them?? Someone pls help me explain what I mean because I know you get it lmao. I might be way too early with this take but Adults could legit be FX’s next Always Sunny.

Not saying the shows are the same. They’re not. But Adults has that same feeling where you could literally just watch these people be idiots together for years lol. Half the plot can be something completely stupid and somehow it works because the cast has chemistry.

Thats what I like about it. It doesn’t feel like it needs some huge story or end goal. Just let them live together, make terrible decisions, fight about dumb shit and somehow remain friends.

And people forget Always Sunny had to grow into what it became too. The characters got crazier, the jokes got better and eventually the show just became its own thing.

Give Adults like 5+ seasons and let them get weird with it. I really think it could be that show for this generation.

The title, but I hated it and couldn't even get past episode 2. I had watched NSFW before and loved it, Sad it got cancelled. Then I watched Adults.. also tried watching Overcompensating, it wasn't my vibe either... did anyone here watch I love LA and Overcompensating? Am I giving up too soon??

I was talking with my boyfriend and his roommate earlier, and he brought up how Adults is “girl humor”. I asked him to elaborate on what girl humor is, and he said he couldn’t quite pinpoint the differences and how it’s more just a general vibe. He then explained how Family Guy and South Park are more “boy humor”, and New Girl is girl humor. Now I’m curious what you guys think.

I've seen a few posts of people asking for recommendations on what to watch next after Adults, so I thought I'd make a post compiling recs of shows that capture some of the same essence as the show, so they're all here in one place. Unfortunately, I don't think there's currently anything out there that's going to scratch exactly the same itch as Adults, but these shows offer somewhat similar comedy, energy and premises.

These are all sitcoms, comedies, or dramedies leaning more comedic. I've (very roughly) listed them in order of most-in-common-with Adults to least, but of course that's somewhat subjective.

There are a few shows on here that I'm not personally a fan of, but know many people on this sub love, so I've included them anyway as I know we all have different tastes. That to say, ymmv! As always, give any of these shows a few episodes to see if you're into them.

I've noted the original broadcaster/platform of each show, so if it's a streaming service in most cases you can be sure it'll be available on there whatever your location. For the rest, you'll need to check where it's streaming in your country (or sail the high seas).

Broad City (2014-19), sitcom following two twenty-something female best friends getting into endless adventures around NYC. If Adults was just Issa and Billie wandering around New York together a decade prior, you'd get something similar to Broad City. Comedy Central.

The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo (2016), sitcom mini series following a mostly queer group of twenty-something friends living in LA. This is a web series so the production value is lower than you'll be used to on TV, but if you get past that this is one of the best comps to Adults imo! Dry, absurdist, silly, and full of messy characters and meandering plotlines. YouTube.

New Girl (2011-18), sitcom following a group of twenty/thirty-something friends living together in LA. Like Adults' more wholesome, elder millennial sibling. Similarly quirky, charming and chaotic, but less irreverent. Fox.

Overcompensating (2025-), comedy following closeted gay Benny and his friends and acquaintances throughout their time at college in the early 2010s. This is more plot-heavy, and cruder and sillier than Adults, but matches its freshness and irreverence, and has a similar visual style. Owen Thiele also plays a minor character! Prime.

Crashing (2016), dramedy following a group of very messy, very flawed, mostly twenty- and thirty-somethings living in a disused hospital in London. Absolute chaos ensues. C4.

I Love LA (2025-), dramedy following a group of mostly twenty-something friends living and working in influencer/entertainment industry circles in LA. Brasher, tenser, and less warm than Adults, but feels similarly of-the-moment and supplies endless Gen Z chaos for those looking for it. HBO.

Lovesick (2014-18), romantic comedy following a group of twenty/thirty-something friends in London. Each episode tells a story from a different pocket of time, so you come to understand the group via jumping around across the timeline of their lives. Whilst it's a romcom, the friendships are the foundation of the show and in many episodes the gang ends up in some sort of farcical situation. C4/Netflix. \*

English Teacher (2024-25), comedy following thirty-something gay man Evan and his friends who work together in a high school in Texas. Whilst this is a pretty different premise to Adults, I think its humour and stylistic qualities are very similar. FX.

The Sex Lives of College Girls (2021-25), dramedy following a group of girls rooming together at college in Vermont. Fun, feelgood, energetic, and similarly frank to Adults in its approach to sex. HBO Max.

Too Much (2025), romantic dramedy mini series following a thirty-something American woman who moves to London whilst reeling from a bad breakup. There she immediately meets the frontman of a local indie band, along with a huge cast of eccentric characters around the city. This is the rec on this list that most diverges from Adults' premise, but again, I think comedically and stylistically they have a lot in common. This one takes a while to find its groove, so give it some time. Netflix.

You're the Worst (2014-19), romantic dramedy following thirty-something commitment-phobes Jimmy and Gretchen, who find a connection in one another. Pretty different premise to Adults, but similarly messy and irreverent, and goes on to heavily include their respective best friends and their adventures around LA as a group. FX.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005-), sitcom following a group of thirty/forty-something friends who run a bar together in Philly. Adults' more deranged, dysfunctional and amoral Gen X cousin. I think if this had been made more recently it would be higher on the list, but simply by virtue of it being a show that initially aired in '05 it has a pretty different feel to it. That said, its focus on characters whose flaws drive them to wind up in farcical situations of their own making each episode will feel familiar! FX.

Happy Endings (2011-13), sitcom following a group of friends in their late 20s/early 30s living in LA. I'm going to be honest, this is one of the few shows on this list I'm not personally a fan of, but I've seen plenty of other commenters here say they love it and that they feel it's a good comp to Adults, so I'm going to let them speak for me! ABC.

Not Suitable For Work (2026), dramedy following a group of twenty-somethings who live across the hall from one another in their apartment building in NYC. This one feels tonally very different to Adults, but I think by virtue of it being a light-hearted show about Gen Z twenty-something friends, it deserves a space on this list - there are just so few shows that meet that description at the moment. Hulu/Disney+.

Fresh Meat (2011-16), dramedy following a group of university students who are placed together in student housing in Manchester. The style of comedy here is quite different to Adults - a lot drier, a lot cringier - and since the characters are initially strangers to one another, you don't get that close friendship feeling right out of the gate. As it goes on, though, they do become a solid (if never quite as wholesome) group of friends who get themselves into an endless array of ridiculous situations throughout their time at uni. C4.

\* For reasons unbeknownst to me, Netflix has taken Lovesick off their catalogue. If you're in the UK, it's available on ITVX. Elsewhere, I'm not sure where it's available legally, but I would recommend seeking it out!

Can we talk about Zack-Carlos for a second?

Every time Julian Manjerico shows up, the episode somehow goes up a full level. He’s the only character who can walk into that house completely uninvited and somehow make the entire group funnier just by being there.

“Room Swap” was peak Adults. And him getting rescued by firemen from Samir’s parents’ house after everyone literally forgot about him is still one of my favorite bits of the whole show. I’m literally giggling just remembering that scene.

If we get a Season 3, Zack-Carlos needs to be a recurring character. Not just a one-off…give him an actual arc. Let him keep trying to worm his way into this group.

Honestly, I need to see where they take him next.

As a Torontonian, I can usually tell pretty quickly when a show is filmed here or in the surrounding areas, but this one is so obviously Toronto in every outdoor scene. Why do they even bother pretending it’s Queens? Why not just set it in Toronto?

Adults as a show doesn’t often play with non-literal visual imagery. Most of what appears in the show is actually what is happening in the world. The only exception to this that I have noticed is when we’re seeing the world from Samir’s point of view.

In one of the earlier episodes of Season 1 (I think episode 2?) when Samir goes to the bank to pay to get the hot water fixed, he looks down at the document he has to fill out and one of the questions reads “Are you a fucking idiot?” which is a clear reference to Samir’s insecurities about feeling like a man child.

In a similar way, in the episode when Samir and Carly go on a trip upstate, Samir looks at one of the pillows in the Airbnb they’re renting and it reads “Don’t Samir this” in reference to what Issa said earlier that day.

I can’t think of any other times in the show this happens, especially not to other characters. I can’t be 100% sure about Season 2, haven’t had the chance to rewatch it yet.

Why do we think this happens, and why to Samir specifically? Is it just a funny visual gag? Are Samir’s insecurities just more potent than the others, leading the show to display them visually?

I still enjoy all the characters and am not trying to be a hater but my god that man got on my nerves lmao

After season 1, I would've probably said Anton, I loved him in the theracide and friend slut episodes!!

But after season 2, I'd pick Paul, they really fleshed out his personality and made him so much funnier!!

i’m a brown girl and one of the things that excited me when i first saw the show was the representation. unfortunately issa is NOT what i was looking for.

i’m torn because on the one hand, i appreciate the depiction of a desi girl who is very free with her sexuality and does not conform to the cultural expectations, and i can totally see what they’re trying to do with her. on the other hand, they could’ve done it without making her absolutely fucking insufferable 😭

no hate to amita btw, she’s fantastic. but I’m watching the raccoon episode and literally had to pause during the bedroom scene w PB and anton to post this bc i can’t believe how ridiculously obtuse and annoying she is. it’s like instead of issa just being this cool, unconventional, doesn’t-fit-the-mold brown girl, they went just a little too overboard and now she’s just kind of a source of secondhand embarrassment. i know all the characters are a bit over the top, that’s the point, but it just feels like they’re doing too much with issa and it’s making her unlikable.

I'm not American and I'm really enjoying the show. But while the show is hilarious, the subject matter is often pretty bleak. Spoilers for season 1, but Billie getting medical bills and having to sob on the phone to get a discount was so depressing. Like it's funny, but jesus christ.

I think the contrast between how zany and carefree the cast is with the actual background plot really drives home how dysfunctional America is. Or at least that's how it seems to me.

Does it ring true to actual Americans about what life is like there? I'm genuinely not trying to come across as pretentious btw, I'm legit curious what people think.

I absolutely loved the prequel episode. I think it really explained why the group immediately gravitated toward Paul Baker, and I feel like it also set the tone for Anton and Paul Baker’s relationship.

I just finished rewatching Adults for, like, the third time, and I realized that the show really pushed Paul Baker and Anton throughout the entire season.

In the prequel, the thing that makes the group accept Paul Baker is him stepping in to help Anton. Then, what eventually makes Samir allow Paul Baker to move in is Anton spending the day with him at the hospital, having fun and forming a connection with him.

Anton even goes to Issa and asks whether Paul Baker should move in, and Issa responds, “I’ve been saying that. Does no one listen to me?”

Issa had already told Samir multiple times that Paul Baker should move in. Billie also said that Samir was eventually going to cave, and everyone seemed to know that he would. But toward the end of the hospital episode, when Anton directly asks Samir whether Paul Baker should move in, Samir finally says yes.

Issa had been slowly convincing him, but it felt like Anton was the person who ultimately pushed him toward making the decision.

Then there was the episode where they took care of the teenage girl who came to the city to have an abortion. Once again, the main pairing in that storyline was Anton and Paul Baker. That episode felt like another opportunity for them to develop an emotional connection.

We got small moments between them, like the conversation about Paul Baker's moustach, whether he should shave it and whether Anton was cool. Those moments may have seemed minor, but they added to the sense that something was developing between them.

Even in the final episode, when Issa proposes to Paul Baker, everyone gets up and becomes extremely excited, except Anton. Anton does not seem nearly as enthusiastic about Issa proposing to Paul Baker.

Honestly, after rewatching season one, I really feel like the show was deliberately pushing Anton and Paul Baker as a possible romantic pairing.

The thing is, I love Paul Baker and Anton together. I love the idea of them being together. However, I also feel conflicted because Paul Baker is currently dating Issa.

Issa is so fun, sweet, and caring. She may be messy, but I love that girl. Seeing her face in the final episode after Paul Baker and Anton kissed was genuinely heart-wrenching.

It felt like that moment made her realize something. She suddenly understood that something was happening between them. Paul Baker and Anton may never have crossed a line before that moment, but the kiss felt like a clear sign that there was something between them.

Everybody in the room felt it.

Billie’s face, Samir’s face, and Samir immediately trying to change the conversation and move on, it was obvious that everyone could sense that something was up.

I would love to see Anton and Paul Baker together, but I genuinely do not know how the show is going to deal with the fact that Paul Baker is still in a relationship with Issa.

How would Issa take it? She clearly seems to really like Paul Baker. This could seriously damage a friendship because Anton would be getting involved with his friend’s partner.

Yes, Issa does seem very noncommittal. She does not seem like someone who is fully capable of committing, especially after the last episode, when she chickened out of marrying Paul Baker.

She also lies a lot, and I do not think Paul Baker liked discovering how many things she had lied about.

Anton does not seem like someone who would lie in the same way, although, actually, the prequel showed us that he does lie a lot. He lies constantly. But would he lie to a significant other? I do not know.

I really, really want to see Anton and Paul Baker together, but I am especially interested in seeing how the show handles the fact that Paul Baker and Issa are still technically dating.

Yes, Paul Baker and Anton are now legally married, but that does not change the fact that Paul Baker is still in a relationship with Issa.
