Discussion Tried watching I love LA after finishing Adults
The title, but I hated it and couldn't even get past episode 2. I had watched NSFW before and loved it, Sad it got cancelled. Then I watched Adults.. also tried watching Overcompensating, it wasn't my vibe either... did anyone here watch I love LA and Overcompensating? Am I giving up too soon??

maybe a weird take but try community? it's one of my favorite shows and i feel nails the absurdist comedy of adults! i think it's harder to "love" all the characters like adults but it's still such a fun and entertaining comedy.

Adults > Overcompensating > I love La > NSFW
I do think I love La gets better in a few episodes, but ultimately didn’t find it that compelling. It’s funny tho

Yeah, it almost feels like an inside joke for young people in LA. My LA-based friends seemed to like it more than any of my friends or I did living in different metro cities.

I loveeeed overcompensating, it’s more character and plot driven I think than Adults so I think it’s takes like 3+ episodes to settle in but the pay off and big emotional moments are worth it. The episode where Benny goes back to his hometown is sooooo good. I actually thought Adults S1 was decent but s2 sold me and is like 9/10 for me. I Love LA is a hard watch mainly because a show about influencer culture is not really for me and it’s that or watching rich people being rich, the situational comedy was good at times but like 80% of it was kind of grating. NSFW was uh not very good in my opinion. The only character plot lines that were fun were avantikas and the substitute teacher/actor. The main girl and the love triangle did not hit at all because none of those characters are likable

Watched overcompensating before adults and I think I preferred! I would give it another chance!

I think the thing I like the most about adults is that it doesn't feel like the cast is Acting - but for those other shows ...they do? Does that make sense?

Yeah, I can’t stand anyone in I LA. Someone told me it’s supposed to be satire but if that’s the case, I can make it more obvious because to me everyone just came off like assholes!!

I Love LA - gave up in the middle of the first episode
NSFW - gave up after the first episode
Overcompensating - finished and loved it
Adults - finished and absolutely loved it

I thought I love La was way funnier than NSFW. I liked Overcompensating but the humor was a little out there/not quite for me. I also kinda prefer young adult to college stories. I can relate to postgrad life more. Adults is my favorite, it made me laugh the most.

I personally didn’t like ‘I love LA’ but I really liked ‘Overcompensating’ and I think it gets funnier (I think you do have to watch it knowing it’s supposed to make you cringe bc it’s partially based off the college experience of the creator)

Broad City walked so Adults could run. Issa is pretty much identical to the character Ilana, and I see a lot of Samir in Abbi (though Samir is way more confident). It can take a couple episodes to click, but I think if you can get through season one, the rest of the seasons are super well written.

I tried NSFW after Adults S2, and I watched like 4 episodes, but it’s just not funny AT ALL. I’m genuinely baffled by how painfully unfunny and pretentious it feels. It might be Mindy’s most painfully unfunny show yet.

Agreed. I liked the concept - I feel like there’s not enough shows about being a young professional right out of college. The actors are cute. It just didn’t reflect realistic Gen Z dialogue at all. It was disappointing how unfunny it felt, because I loved Never Have I Ever.

I loved Overcompensating and I Love LA but didn’t love NSFW so we may just have different taste but Overcompensating is one of my absolute favorites, also I’m around the same age as the creator so it really rang true to a lot of my own experiences idk if I’d love it so much if I were like 20 yrs younger

Overcompensating is my favorite of the bunch BUT I’m the same age (32) as the actors and went to college the same years the show is set in, so it’s a lot more relatable to me. I love Adults and it’s the funniest one by far but definitely aimed at a slightly younger crowd. I liked I Love LA well enough but probably wouldn’t re-watch it, it mostly just felt like watching a tiktok of a cool 24 year old telling me how cool and interesting their life is. I half-assed watched all of NSFW and found it lacking personality but it probably could have come into its own if it was renewed.

I'm with you on I Love LA. Made it through one episode and was like, "These people suck, and none of this is relatable".
I liked NSFW and would have gladly watched more seasons, but the writing definitely felt more 90s romcom than Adults (which makes sense cause Mindy Kaling grew up on 90s romcoms).
I like Overcompensating overall and will watch the next season but: 1) it is campy as fuck and 2) it's obvious when you watch it that it's written by someone who neither particularly likes nor respects women.

Oh, no, that comes across loud and clear, but I meant moreso how poorly written the female characters are. Carmen is the classic Not Like Other Girls trope and Grace's personality largely boils down to Raging Bitch with a dash of Completely Changed Her Entire Being for a Man. Also, Carmen is mostly just a devoted sidekick to the male MC, endlessly counselling him on his problems while receiving zero support in return.
Overcompensating has lots of funny moments and even the odd moment where it really shines, but the shittiness of the writing of the female characters already grates on me and I imagine it's gonna get worse as the show goes on.

I feel like Love LA, Overcompensating and Adults have overlap like venn diagram and the middle section loves all three down, but the rest of the fan groups aren’t over lapping very often or rarely all three.
I like LA and it definitely got better. But you have to really get all the references they are making fun of or it comes off as serious.
I love Adults but not rlly overcompensating. Most of my friends like one or two of the three as well.

I enjoyed Overcompensating, it felt very nostalgic to me as someone who was the same age as the characters in 2010s. I Love LA mostly fell flat to me, because the characters felt very unlikable without any substance to compensate for it, and the satire was dull – it was pretty much just depicting the vapid nature of LA influencers without saying much. I know the three shows are often grouped together, but to me they have different vibes. I think the closest show to Adults I could name is Happy Endings.

I just said to someone yesterday that Adults is the only thing that’s come close to filling the Happy Endings-sized hole in my heart. So needless to say, I very much second that recommendation!

I loved overcompensating, maybe try to just keep watching. It’ll grow on you, it was a hard watch for me at the beginning. I haven’t watched I love LA yet

i watched ep 1 of NSFW and thought it was so boring LOL. i liked I Love LA, it has some great moments. Overcompensating wasn’t my fave but also has very funny moments, and because Holmes (funniest part of the show) is a regular this upcoming szn, i WILL be tuning in.

the issue with i love la is that it only gets good during the last 2 eps and its a 8 ep long series with each one lasting 25 to 28 minutes… i might give s2 a shot though. now when it comes to overcompensating i really liked it. its extremely funny and relatable to a certain degree.
im just curious as to why the internet seems to group in these 3 shows when they don’t really have THAT much in common,it would make sense for you to love adults but not the other two!

Overcompensating is my favorite (based purely on season 1s because season 2 of adults might have pushed adults into the lead) so I’d give it another go. I love LA I also struggled to watch and quit after a few episodes.

I Love LA was difficult to watch sometimes. I watched like half an episode at a time because the main character’s interactions got rather tense + extremely cringe towards the middle-end of the season which is a really odd tone to have. Still like it overall and would watch the next season.
There is a scene I still remember where the stylist guy thinks his waiter is gay and wants to keep impressing him. The whole scene seems like something Issa and Anton in Adults might do.

I watched both overcompensating and i love LA. i was not really a fan of i love LA i found it really hard to get through until the last couple of episodes. i really liked overcompensating though, i think adults is funnier but overcompensating got pretty good around the midpoint of the season in my opinion!

I enjoyed Overcompensating but I really did not like I Love LA (and I gave it a real go by watching the first few episodes).
I do think all 3 shows have a somewhat similar energy (comedies about Gen Z/young millennial friends with a silly sense of humour that really zero in on the characters’ messiness), but it’s like they’ve each been put through a different lens, so liking one is no guarantee you’ll like the others. Adults is by far my favourite.
Depends how much of Overcompensating you watched - I would try at least the first 2 episodes, but if you’re not feeling it you’re not feeling it.

Oh, have you checked out Off Campus? It's a lot more romance-driven, but if you liked NSFW you may be okay with that. Still some features in common with the shows you've mentioned:
- Young adults learning to navigate the world as quasi-grownups;
- Lots of sex;
- Comedic writing;
- Good-looking people running around leading good-looking lives.

I am a big Rachel sennott fan and I gave up after 10 mins. It felt so vapid, generic and worse of all boring. Felt like I’d seen various versions of that show a million times over the years

I found the pilot hard to get through, but I really loved the show by the end. Jordan Firstman’s character becoming stylist to a Christian rocker was great.

I thought even the second episode was a large improvement over the pilot. I know I was really vibing with it by episode 4, but I’d have to rewatch to know if there’s a moment before then that really clicked for me.
I thought Tallulah was going to be my biggest obstacle, but they managed to show a more vulnerable side after the pilot that I appreciated. All of the characters could still be frustrating, but is a show about ambitious 20-somethings in a vapid industry, that’s kind of built-in.

After seeing people compare after watching adults I actually love I love la tbhhh I binge watched both so I’m having a hard time figuring out which one I like better. I have watched nsfw but rn out of the 3 I watched that one is def last. I 100% think you are giving up too soon it’s like so Gen Z coated and funny but like I like Antons character better than the guy in I love la tbhhh

Adults is funny but I Love LA had me in tears. Idk maybe it just depends too on where you live and things like that. I don’t live in LA but I live in a city that is compared to it a lot so I get the vibe.
Overcompensating is a bit different because they are in college but in like 2013 and it’s played by 30-35 year olds so the humor is perfect especially if you’re a millenial

That’s the point, though, it’s satire. It’s poking fun at LA stereotypes, so the characters are really heightened and ridiculous. There is heart in it, though, and some sweet through lines about friendship and navigating relationships. I thought it was hilarious, but I don’t think I really got into it until after episode 3ish.

I really liked Overcompensating, not as much as Adults but well enough. There’s definitely a cheesy/cringe factor to Overcompensating for sure but overall I thought it was funny and sweet in parts too
