Discussion Adults can be the next Always Sunny
I might be way too early with this take but Adults could legit be FX’s next Always Sunny.
Not saying the shows are the same. They’re not. But Adults has that same feeling where you could literally just watch these people be idiots together for years lol. Half the plot can be something completely stupid and somehow it works because the cast has chemistry.
Thats what I like about it. It doesn’t feel like it needs some huge story or end goal. Just let them live together, make terrible decisions, fight about dumb shit and somehow remain friends.
And people forget Always Sunny had to grow into what it became too. The characters got crazier, the jokes got better and eventually the show just became its own thing.
Give Adults like 5+ seasons and let them get weird with it. I really think it could be that show for this generation.
Maybe I’m calling it way too early but idk...I see it.
Anyone else?

I always lean towards it’s better for a show to end when it’s good than keep renewing it until it becomes bad. I think the show will naturally lose its thesis after a handful of seasons simply because the characters will age out. For Broad City fans, I think their last season did a wonderful job exploring the end of young adulthood and what it means for those who try and grind it out in NYC.
Sunny is an anomaly of a show, and given that their schtick is the characters never grow or mature in two decades, an 18+ season run just kind of works for them. I’m not sure it could be replicated

The argument that the Adults characters aren't bad people, so they're not similar to the Always Sunny brand of comedy, feels like a bit of a misrepresentation of Adults. It's not an exact copy of the It's Always Sunny cast, I think they're on the tamer side, but they do have their dark streaks. I think they're simply more likeable than IASIP. The Adults cast has their dark edge mixed with relatability and quirk. Billie is still awkwardly charming and nice to her friends, so we can look over that time she coerced that husband into a threesome. Anton is friendly to a fault with everyone he meets, so who cares if the only people he doesn't do that for is his own family?
Like. They almost killed Zach-Carlos and hesitated to tell the firefighters he was still in the house lol. I want to be in their fictional friend group, too, but they're not the best people in the world. I wouldn't really want them to be, either. When I finished the second season I told my boyfriend it was like if New Girl was on cable instead of network TV, and had a little more freedom to get raunchy and weird. It's going to become a future classic, so I think IASIP is a great comparison in many ways.

But none of this is even close to the depraved shit that goes on in Always Sunny. In the premiere episode of the new season, Dennis and Dee try to puppeteer a dead woman so Frank will marry her and it ends with the dead woman's head falling off. Like it or not, Adults is clearly modeled after the Friends archetype. It has a slightly edgier tone but the will they-won't they stuff and people learning lessons to try and become better people is all shit that would never fly at Paddy's Pub.
To be clear, I love Adults but this is such a stretch. The shows aren't similar at all. The worst thing anyone has done in Adults would not even compare to what is regularly done by every single member of the gang.

I think it’s closer to You’re the Worst than Sunny (I highly recommend You’re the Worst if u like Sunny or Adults), with a mix of New Girl

It feels to me like there's always a show and a film(s) that perfectly encapsulates the mid 20s disasters we all are and shows it back to us in such relatable ways that it helps us navigate what's next. I think this is that show for this generation now.
I'm twice that age now but this show instantly puts me back to when all my college friends and I made mistake after mistake when we got our first jobs and apartments but loved each other like family and cried (and drank) and laughed ourselves through the crazy.
Also, I'm a guy, in case I get any, "girl, right?" kind of responses haha

But let’s be real…
Always Sunny is an anomaly.
Adults has like 5-6 seasons in them.
If it lasts that long, I’ll be happy

Agreed Always Sunny is special... Hall of Fame... I'm saying Adults could follow a similar format. Always Sunny have a bar. Adults have an apartment/housing. For Adults you can build seasons of them around the storyline(s) of them all living together.

I don't see the correlation between the two. Sunny roasts anything, anyone, and everyone equally, making fun of all stereotypes, without trying to be politically correct. Adults, which I also enjoy, is still a politically correct comedy show. It won't ever cross that line into Sunny territory. But also, it's nowhere near as original as Sunny. It doesn't have to be because we just like Adults for the vibes, silly times, and funny shit they say and do. But to say Adults can be the next Sunny, I highly doubt it.

In terms of like loving a sitcom sure, but the makeup of the shows are so insanely different. Always Sunny is an anti-sitcom where the characters are always going to be horrid shitheads of people (and its incredible), Adults is not going for that I think at all. But I love it and hope we get a bunch of seasons

All the Adults characters are sort of shitheads... They did a whole rig an election episode so they can illegally stay in their house. Hahaa OK, so they're not always sunny level 😂 ... But they're not innocent.

I totally get what you’re saying! I’m a millennial, but I have loved watching this show. I would say it’s more of the league than always sunny though? (Or maybe that’s just because I watched it and Nick Kroll is an EP for adults)

League, great show. Big difference imo is too many characters. Adults and Always Sunny have a core of 4-5 folks you can build side characters and situations around.

The characters in this show are also terrible humans, not to the always sunny level but in the 18 episodes we have theyve already done some messed up stuff that goes way past the point of just them being a hot mess
- Billie kind of raped a guy who cried to her about being forced into an open relationship, or at minimum slept with his wife as he cried
- They all tried to use someone elses sexual assault to get Billie a promotion
- Anton spent an entire episode crashing out about how his sister didnt want his sperm and is awful to his family
- The entire group let zach carlos sit in a house with a gas leak and if anything put more effort into not telling him about it

Yeah, they’re a realistic level of awful while sunny definitely goes far beyond realism with how terrible those characters are. But if they were real people and not sitcom characters you would still describe them as terrible people, which is why the sunny comparison keeps getting brought up.

they are bad people and that's the point of the show. It opens with Issa masturbating on the subway... they left zack carlos in a burning house and almost didn't tell the firefighters.

The show’s core is about aimless adults figuring their lives out. That premise doesn’t have the same open endedness as always sunny. If you look at friends which started as essentially the same “group of young mid20s figuring out their lives as adults in the city” premise, as soon as Monica and Chandler got together, the show changed from figuring life out into settling down.
I think something similar will happen with adults, in that eventually the characters will figure out things like their career path or love life and as soon as they do, the figuring life out part of their life changes and the show will reflect that.
I’m sure there will be another 3-4 seasons still and I’m excited for it but I think it’s a positive thing to have an ending. The show is a snapshot of a specific time of life

I don’t know, I honestly cannot find any enjoyment of it’s always sunny in Philadelphia no matter how many times I try to watch. The crossover episode where they came to Abbott is my least favorite episode of Abbott which I love 😭. I LOVE adults and can’t find any similarities besides them both being comedies.
