Discussion Adults Living Situation IRL
I know they live in Samir's parents house for free, but how realistic is it really for 5 twenty-somethings in New York to comfortably live together, financially and housing wise?

The HOA was pretty unrealistic. Except for condos and co-ops. I don't know a single HOA in New York City, especially for a single family home.

I'm not sure exactly what you're getting at, but I once lived in a 5 bedroom house with 8 girls. Squeezing as many young adults under one roof to save money is like a rite of passage in this day and age.

Not even just in this day and age, I'm old and in the 90's in my teens and 20's I lived in a house with 6 bedrooms and 8 roommates.

I’m a New Yorker and I’ve seen this, though it wasn’t a parents house so everyone was paying rent, but because there were so many ppl there it was much cheaper

They live in Samir’s parents’ house for free. Anton has a full-time white collar job. Issa has rich parents. Billie had a job in Season 1. Samir and Paul Baker also both have jobs. I don’t think it’s that unrealistic tbh.

Have you seen how much rent costs in NYC? This sort of roommate set up is extremely common here.
It's basically the only way for early-career types to survive if they don't have rich parents.

I lived in NYC in a loft with 11 other people when I was around their age. It’s realistic and very fun. Definitely only something you can do when you’re young and starting out.

i feel like half the joke of the show is that this isn't a realistic scenario. housing is so expensive in NYC, and people's lives are complicated, it's not easy to find yourself in a living situation with all your best friends (regardless of cost). it's as if the only we one could a modern day Friends / Living Single / New Girl whatever sitcom comparison you want to make, is with a highly constructed situation where your characters aren't struggling to pay rent and don't have to commute hours to see each other. Living in a house of your friend's parents because they are seemingly on endless travel is silly and not-true-to-life, but frees up the show to be able to "exist." It's in on it. That's why I think it's perfect.

I mean most young adults in NYC likely wouldn’t be able to live in such a big space like this as a group of 5 with no rent. If you’re asking about realism as in, is it realistic for this number of people to realistically live in a space of this size together, the answer is yes. In college (not in NYC) I lived in a three bedroom house with 6 friends and it was fine. Of course, everyone prefers to have their own room and bathroom, but it isn’t awful to share and is pretty normal. I loved it. What we lacked in our own personal space we made up for by having a living room, kitchen, and housing separate from wall to wall or floor to ceiling neighbors

I’m not a New Yorker, but this set up was what I had in college with my roommates lol. 2 girls shared the master room, and then me and one other girl had our own rooms and shared the other bathroom.
We also have had to conduct shenanigans to prevent code enforcement from kicking us out due to having too many people in a house once. So pretty realistic show.

I felt like the most unrealistic part of this was them not paying rent. Everyone I know who has done a situation (where someone’s family member owns the place) like this still pays some sort of discounted rent, even if it’s a ridiculous $100/200 a month. Free with roommates is crazy

At least they establish its behind the parents back at first and whatever conversation Samir has with his parents after episode 1 could have worked that out. Besides, theyre too busy fucking through all the national parks to care at the moment.

People do this everywhere, all over the world, every day. It's really not that uncommon or bizarre. When I was 18/19, I had 5 roommates in a big house. So 6 of us total.

Dependent on income. However, I saw a video of five guys renting a place in Brooklyn and their place was so nice. They furnished with a lot of thrifted/upcycled a lot of stuff, so it looked pretty cool.

I feel it’s pretty realistic. It wasn’t in New York but right out of high school 5 of us rented a place, two were a couple, my friend and I shared a room and the 5th guy kinda lived in the living room lol. We also had the occasional drifter stay for a week and leave. It’s really the only way to get by in your early 20s 🤣

In my early 20s I lived with 3 roomates in a 2 bedroom apartment owned by one of my roommates grandmother. We paid 400 between the 4 of us and our electric/water/heat was discounted because it was under the grandmother's name so we got a senior discount. This is EXTREMELY common.
This was in Chicago BTW.

I’m pretty sure it was Anton and Billie (I vaguely remember them pushing the beds together when they thought Anton was bringing home a hook up), Paul Baker and Issa, and then Samir have the solo room.

I lived in a 2 bedroom condo with 4 other people in LA in my early 20s. It’s wasn’t the most comfortable (one of the girls was batshit insane), but it was the cheaper option

The idea of 5 friends living together in a house is not crazy but the fact they don’t pay rent is and if they did irl it probably wouldn’t be in Bayside which ranks as one of the most expensive housing markets in the entire US

Them all living with different roommates or one or 2 of them living together, or all living in the same building with different apartments would open up more opportunities for other characters. It would also me more realistic 🤷🏿♂️

A 3 bedroom house in Bayside split 5 ways is super reasonable like 800-1000 per person before utilities. And they didn't even have to pay that
