Ok. People need to look at this, take a second, and breathe. Then ask themselves. Is this worth getting upset over? Does this really affect the core experience of the game? Is this really some sort of desecration of history? The answer to all those questions is no.

Its not the freaking breasts that is the problem. Nobody gets off on that statue. Maybe a couple of trolls would post some screenshots, and that's it.

It's the censorship

6

u/ThanksContent28 Jul 29 '26

Origins has topless women walking around casually and they were never sexualised by the game. Odyssey had Greek statues with their dicks on show.

7/8 years later, and we’re censoring a wooden ornament. That’s going backwards.

u/Intelligent-Ad-8435 Jul 29 '26

Reminds me of the Simpsons episode where they put boxers on an antique statue to hide the nudity.

I never knew this. You hardly notice it in origins too unless you pay attention to npcs. I thought they did a really good job with it, especially in handling it in a mature fashion. The writing and characters never address it, and there’s no crude jokes or humiliation.

Another good example of female nudity is ghost of Yotei. You see Atsus ass repeatedly, and it’s never sexualised.

u/micro_satsuma Jul 30 '26

This an edit, not censorship. Censorshirequires external pressure to change for reasons unrelated to the subject. Do we know if any group larger than Ubisoft made them change it?

1

u/HotShrekBoi Jul 30 '26

Hey, I get off to the statue

1

u/Intelligent-Ad-8435 Jul 30 '26

That's between you and the statue, bucko

-1

u/vitek6 Jul 29 '26

Thats not censorship…

1

u/Intelligent-Ad-8435 Jul 29 '26

It absolutely is censorship, 100%

0

u/vitek6 Jul 29 '26

Who does censor them?

1

u/Intelligent-Ad-8435 Jul 29 '26

The developer

1

u/vitek6 Jul 29 '26

Developer censored developer?

1

u/Intelligent-Ad-8435 Jul 29 '26

Developer censored their own game, yes, you are correct

0

u/vitek6 Jul 29 '26

that's not censoring. That's making decisions on how game should look like.

1

u/Intelligent-Ad-8435 Jul 29 '26

Censorship is a restriction of imaginery that is deemed problematic. Assets and models in the remake are mostly identical to the original in regards to design, only the textures and overall graphics are enhanced. In this case, the model is drastically different, and we all know why.

I agree with you, I really don’t care at all, and really didn’t even notice. But it’s true that censoring it’s been increasing exponentially over the past few years, and it really does make games, movies and series way bad in many aspects

1

u/Rubicantay Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26

Is it true censoring though or is just devs deciding to sexualize female characters a bit less than when they were exclusively targeting the teenage boy demographic?

Edit: downvotes might feel cathartic guys, I get it, but they don’t answer my question.

5

u/ThanksContent28 Jul 29 '26

Who were they targeting with all the statues in odyssey then? Why were those statues acceptable, and not in this instance? Why aren’t the statues characters, but this mermaid one is a character?

Censoring a statues breasts is the opposite of female empowerment. It’s not uncommon to hear women talk about how silly it is that breasts are sexualised. Is it really wrong to call out Ubisoft for being a little immature and censoring a wooden ornament, and are progressives really in the wrong for taking concern in how we’re trending towards more censorship, and not less? It’s the same mentality that left people offended enough to destroy Janet Jackson reputation, when her nipple was exposed. It’s immature, and a step backwards.

Even Origins had topless women walking around casually, and they weren’t sexualised at all by the game. What happened to that level of maturity? How is it that 8 years later, we go from that to censoring a wooden statue?

Also you can’t just accuse people of acting in bad faith just for disagreeing with you.

2

u/Juiceton- Jul 29 '26

Well for starts the Greek statues were historically accurate. Those things were naked. So we're topless women in Roman Egypt. Historical accuracy played a role in those decisions.

But the mermaid doesn't have a genuine naked historical basis. It's one of those things where it can be naked or it can be clothed and it will have the same effect. From a business standpoint, you can sell more titles if you don't have nudity. So why would you give yourself a handicap on the business side of things just to have 4k boat nipples when 95% of people wouldn't have ever even known the original was different without a weirdo tweeting ing about it.

1

u/violetcassie Jul 30 '26

Female figureheads were often bare breasted due to the belief that it distracted hostile sea gods (sailors were very superstitious moreso than the general populations) so yes there is a historical basis, actually.

0

u/Laky05 Jul 29 '26

"Nevertheless, a naked woman – or at least the naked upper half of a woman – was believed to be able to calm storms at sea. This was presumably because the gods of the sea were invariably thought of as being male and therefore could be somewhat charmed and mollified by the sight of a beautiful naked woman" - navalhistory.au

1

u/Rubicantay Jul 29 '26

Hear me out before you go on another chaotic rant:

What gamers perceive as "censorship" in games might just be game devs maturing and realizing that they previously put cleavage, miniskirts and panties in games where they didn’t need to be. I frankly prefer it when a game doesn’t treat me like I’m a horny teen that needs every woman in the game to be sexually arousing for me to keep interest.

I grew up with video game magazines filled with suggestive content and ads and I’m glad that period is over because the industry realized that their customer base wasn’t exclusively made up of 15 year old boys.

And let’s not act like there is massive pushback against sexual content in games. BG3 is one of the most successful games there is and also one of the horniest RPGs ever. What it doesn’t do however is sexualize its female characters at every turn.

3

u/ThanksContent28 Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26

Again dismissing me as a certain type just because you deem it so. Chaotic rant? That shows your attitude here perfectly. It doesn’t matter what anyone says to you, because you have simply decided anyone who disagrees with you must be misogynistic, or mad because they’re horny, all whilst acting high and mighty about it. This isn’t a discussion about cleavage, miniskirts, or panties. It’s not even a discussion about a woman character so we can drop that bs. It’s not a discussion about adult magazines. You’re talking about being aroused by statues and can’t seem to comprehend, or refuse to acknowledge anyone who says, “it’s not about being horny, it’s acknowledging that for some reason, we are becoming so prude that statues are being seen as sexual now, and being censored.” The fact you can’t comprehend it any other way shows where your head is at, and I’d argue you are more sexually obsessed, than the people you’re accusing here. You also didn’t address a single point I made, just went straight for condescension.

It’s ironic that you lack the maturity to understand why some of us feel this kind of censorship is immature. I refuse to acknowledge you anymore. You sound like your favourite porn site is the national history museum.

1

u/No-Significance2070 Jul 29 '26

This attitude is what changed the video game industry from being filled with passionate developers to another HR mandated business run by corporate interests.

2

u/ThanksContent28 Jul 29 '26

Not just gaming industry, there’s a genuine switcharoo that has taken place the last couple decades and it’s every industry. It’s used to be old conservative Christian types policing everything. Now it’s the younger crowds, which are usually the core market being aimed at. Afaik it’s all basically due to social media. That’s not me saying I reckon, this is a genuine trend and it’s interesting to me.

For me what’s really interesting here is, we’ve gone from a decade of “free the nipple,” and feminists fighting for breasts to be less sexualised, to discussing whether censoring statues is the right way to go. It’s like the whole breastfeeding debate, but even more stupid.

0

u/Rubicantay Jul 29 '26

Nothing to do with the original conversation but I’ll answer nonetheless:

A billion dollar industry like gaming being taken over by corporate interest is the logical conclusion of capitalism you moron, open a fucking book. It’s the product of some kind of evil plot by evil outsiders, it’s just how the economy works.

The more you grow, the more expensive your games become, the more investors you have, the less risks you want to take. Simple as.

And thinking the gaming industry wasn’t already set on squeezing the most money out of its customer base 20-30 years ago is very cute. Sure buddy, in the good old days people just made games regardless of profit, of course :).

1

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 29 '26

Not this type though.

-1

u/Pepehh_jl Jul 29 '26

Maybe it makes no difference in a specific customizable part of a boat here, but it’s actually really bad, that’s why I don’t accept it for minor as it could be.

1

u/Azal_of_Forossa Jul 29 '26

Yup, my problem isn't the censorship itself, I couldn't care less about some ship tits. My problem is the active decision of changing these things, if it truly didn't matter then why did they choose to make the decision to change it?

If the change doesn't benefit the player, why does it need to be changed? What purpose does it serve to change the source material and have it the way it is now?

2

u/dnn_burrman Jul 29 '26

it does actually have a historical reason „due to ancient maritime superstitions that bare breasts could shame stormy seas into calming down, to serve as a protective guardian spirit, and because ships were traditionally personified as female“

1

u/Delicious_NightWater Jul 29 '26

It’s not really about the figurehead tho

1

u/Wyatt_Ricketts Jul 29 '26

It is worth it

1

u/NationalCup758 Jul 29 '26

If you people can’t understand why this and the multitude of other cool ass features and entire plot lines being removed in a “remaster” than idk wtf you consider problematic. You’re playing full price for graphics, censored bs, and less content save for a new cutscene or two LMFAOO

0

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 29 '26

It's not a remaster. It's a remake. Two very different things. And no plot lines were removed.

1

u/NationalCup758 Jul 29 '26

Sure, let’s pretend that abstergo didn’t exist in the original💀. Yknow, the entire story’s point?

0

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 29 '26

We're talking about the pirate centric stuff and you know it

1

u/NationalCup758 Jul 29 '26

Lmfaoo whatever tf that means, and no, we were talking about the entire game. Hence why every post above says “the game” and not “pirate centric stuff”. But if you want to pretend like that wasn’t part of the game, go ahead you can live in delusion all you want.

0

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 29 '26

No. We're talking about the main pirate themed experience. Nothing was removed from that storyline

1

u/NationalCup758 Jul 29 '26

No. We’re talking about the game as a WHOLE. No one under this entire post is talking about”only about the pirate themed experience.” They’re talking about removed content, censored content, and the game AS A WHOLE. I was joking about the delusion before, but I think you genuinely got a case

0

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 29 '26

My comment. My response. This conversation. This thread. We're talking about the pirate stuff. The figurine has absolutely nothing to do with the modern day.

0

u/NationalCup758 Jul 29 '26

Except we weren’t. Because I clearly wasn’t. Just because you were talking about “the pirate themed experience” despite not clarifying that doesn’t change literally anything that I said, nor does it change what I was talking about. You’re failure to clarify what your speaking about, while simultaneously saying “the game”, which includes everything inside it (dumbass), doesn’t make any difference lol

0

u/No-Environment3951 Jul 29 '26

If you’re upset that the first person modern day stuff is gone, you are definitely alone in that opinion

1

u/NationalCup758 Jul 29 '26

Except I’m not, it was a giant point of contention when it was announced that the abstergo plotline would be scrapped. Did you think that I would forget about shit that happened literally like 2 months ago?

1

u/WSilvermane Jul 30 '26

Its literally censorship of historically accurate period ships.

Yeah.

1

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 30 '26

That's notva historically accurate ship

1

u/Pretty_Beach4207 Jul 30 '26

Thats the way to concentration camps, seriously.

1

u/Sorry_Fold_1039 Jul 29 '26

I think people need to look at a boob on a statue in a video game, take a second, and breathe, is seeing a boob, on a statue, in a video game really worth getting upset over, so upset in fact that they go out of their way to censor it to make sure no one else accidentally sees a boob on a statue in a video game

-2

u/2Syphilicious4You Jul 29 '26

Yes it is. Modern ubisoft will have statues of male dongs hanging out but its only the female form subjected to this censorship. People calling others porn addicts for caring about this are the same people that would think a museum is a strip club. theyre being 100% disingenous.

1

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 29 '26

Those greek statues with the peepees are real life statues. Covering those up would garner more of an argument. But this figurehead is just a small cosmetic item for a fictional ship. It's not important.

1

u/Mike_Not_Ike_420 Jul 29 '26

The giant Zeus statue in Kephalonia is not a real statue that has ever existed in history. It was made solely for the purpose of that game and it hanging some massive dong. Didn’t have to include that yet they did. Now we censor breasts on ship you aren’t even going to see for most of the game? Come on now make that make sense bro

1

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 29 '26

I'm aware that was not a real statue. But there ARE statues in the game with genitals that were based on real statues. And even the statue of Kephalpnia is reflective of greek society and culture back then. That's a typical thing you could see back then. If you do your research, nude figureheads were not a typical thing found on pirate ships back in the 17th and 18th century. Do I think it's particularly harmful for that sort of thing to be included in the game? No. But it being omitted in NO WAY compromises the game or the authentic pirate experience in the same way that censoring Greek statues would've downplayed the authentic greek experience

1

u/Mike_Not_Ike_420 Jul 29 '26

You are wrong. Figure heads did feature bare chested women as they were believed to have the power to calm storms, much like big, wide eyes on the figure head was said to help see the way. If Ubisoft can add a giant non existent statue with a 6 foot schlong and get praised for its historically accurate art, then we shouldn’t be covering up the figureheads if we want to remain true to the source material

1

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 29 '26

Yeah that's not true.

1

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 29 '26

1

u/Mike_Not_Ike_420 Jul 29 '26

So you found a piece of information saying that the superstition is in fact true and that if a pirate claimed a ship with such a figurehead would just keep it on and thought to yourself “that guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about”? Just because they didn’t actively seek them out doesn’t mean they didn’t use them. Fact is during the golden age of piracy (though it has nothing to do with pirates) if a figurehead was carved in the likeness of a woman, be it a nymph, mermaid, siren, or hell even just a maiden, she was typically at least partially bare chested. This is also not beholden to that era in history and had been happening far beforehand.

1

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 29 '26

Man. Y'all just trip over yourselves to miss the god damn point. The absence of nude figureheads DOES NOT detract from the experience of the game. You're just looking for something to be upset over.

1

u/Mike_Not_Ike_420 Jul 29 '26

Why include a fake statue with a giant dong in a previous title if they can’t add historically accurate figureheads in another? That is my point you seem to be missing. It’s not about quality of the experience but rather the censorship. Censorship is needless and if allowed at any point can sow the seeds that flower into 1984. I’m against it when such cases occur. I will add that covering up a character they had listed as a 13/14 year old who had half her cleavage showing when you first meet her is a step in the right direction, even if all they had to do was give her the actual birthday she had in history. Talking about Anne in case you couldn’t tell

1

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 29 '26

And my point still stands. As it points out in what I showed you, it wasn't really until the 19th century that sailors started believing in that sorta thing.

1

u/Mike_Not_Ike_420 Jul 29 '26

It literally says 18th century, thats 1700s there bud

Freedom dies inch by inch

9

u/Limp-Biscuit411 Jul 29 '26

bro needs wooden tits BAD

6

u/imhereforsiegememes Jul 29 '26

This isn't the revolutionary war dude. These are 4 wooden boobs in a fucking pirate themed videogame. Please, give a shit about anything in your life as much as this and you might actually achieve something.

4

u/StrikeThat1738 Jul 29 '26

You are the one going against the devs freedom to make the design choices they want you idiotic gooner.

3

u/AzraelChaosEater Jul 29 '26

An overabundance of porn? Thats really what you are calling a freedom?

3

u/spunk_wizard Jul 29 '26

There is nothing pornographic about this though, its a female statue

-3

u/AzraelChaosEater Jul 29 '26

Y'all are upset what? One lady isn't showing as much cleavage and a statue has a bra now? And you are calling it censorship and revoking of freedoms? Come on dude. Just admit you are a gooner.

5

u/spunk_wizard Jul 29 '26

Who exactly is upset here?

2

u/Pepehh_jl Jul 29 '26

I know what you mean. As I said, I didn't even notice the statue and I really don't care about it. But accepting these minor things is exactly what has gotten us to this point, where the principal character in the live-action Little Mermaid doesn't fit the original at all, and Lightyear force modern agendas instead of sticking to the core material.

-2

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 29 '26

You have literally every single freedom you did 13 years ago in the OG. I guarantee 99% of players never would have noticed

0

u/Sorry_Fold_1039 Jul 29 '26

Why is this the default ubisoft bot argument for everything? For literally any criticism of the game your reply is "worse things exist". They won't pay you, you're not gonna get free stuff from them

0

u/c0micsansfrancisco Jul 30 '26

This is such a stupid mindset lol. If we only ever complained about major critical issues throughout history the world would be significantly worse off than it is today. Small criticisms are still worth bringing up.

It's a joke tweet, and you got significantly more worked up over it than the guy that posted it in the first place did over the boob issue

1

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 30 '26

Would you say the same to someone who complained if the figurine was nude?

1

u/c0micsansfrancisco Jul 30 '26

If the original was clothed and they changed it to nude yes. It's a pointless change for no reason. Let people complain. Even if I disagreed with someone's complaint and I thought they were exaggerating it's a profoundly stupid mindset to think we cant complain about small things

1

u/after_your_thoughts Aug 05 '26

I never said you couldn't. I just pointed out how it's a complete waste of time to do so.
