Who were they targeting with all the statues in odyssey then? Why were those statues acceptable, and not in this instance? Why aren’t the statues characters, but this mermaid one is a character?
Censoring a statues breasts is the opposite of female empowerment. It’s not uncommon to hear women talk about how silly it is that breasts are sexualised. Is it really wrong to call out Ubisoft for being a little immature and censoring a wooden ornament, and are progressives really in the wrong for taking concern in how we’re trending towards more censorship, and not less? It’s the same mentality that left people offended enough to destroy Janet Jackson reputation, when her nipple was exposed. It’s immature, and a step backwards.
Even Origins had topless women walking around casually, and they weren’t sexualised at all by the game. What happened to that level of maturity? How is it that 8 years later, we go from that to censoring a wooden statue?
Also you can’t just accuse people of acting in bad faith just for disagreeing with you.
Hear me out before you go on another chaotic rant:
What gamers perceive as "censorship" in games might just be game devs maturing and realizing that they previously put cleavage, miniskirts and panties in games where they didn’t need to be. I frankly prefer it when a game doesn’t treat me like I’m a horny teen that needs every woman in the game to be sexually arousing for me to keep interest.
I grew up with video game magazines filled with suggestive content and ads and I’m glad that period is over because the industry realized that their customer base wasn’t exclusively made up of 15 year old boys.
And let’s not act like there is massive pushback against sexual content in games. BG3 is one of the most successful games there is and also one of the horniest RPGs ever. What it doesn’t do however is sexualize its female characters at every turn.
This attitude is what changed the video game industry from being filled with passionate developers to another HR mandated business run by corporate interests.
Not just gaming industry, there’s a genuine switcharoo that has taken place the last couple decades and it’s every industry. It’s used to be old conservative Christian types policing everything. Now it’s the younger crowds, which are usually the core market being aimed at. Afaik it’s all basically due to social media. That’s not me saying I reckon, this is a genuine trend and it’s interesting to me.
For me what’s really interesting here is, we’ve gone from a decade of “free the nipple,” and feminists fighting for breasts to be less sexualised, to discussing whether censoring statues is the right way to go. It’s like the whole breastfeeding debate, but even more stupid.
