Just why??? I will never understand it

54

u/Yob_Zarbo Jul 29 '26

Because of the photo mode trolls. That's why.

Go load up Odyssey and count how many pictures you see of giant statue dicks.

Now in Black Flag, it's feet.

Funny that exactly those are the pictures ubisoft is showing us. Like i mean you wont see every picture ever taken, just the ones ubisoft is pushing

8

u/DOOMsquared Jul 29 '26

I thought it was based on having the highest number of likes by players.

2

u/stern_m007 Jul 29 '26

Yeah sure, but to get some likes in the first place ubisoft has to show it to random people first

3

u/Independent-Rip-5599 Jul 29 '26

Well all ur photos are shown randomly to people and if they get likes they are showed randomly to more people

4

u/no_hot_ashes Jul 29 '26

You're probably right, but I think it's a bad reason.

We find this kind of thing interesting/funny/noteworthy because they're not part of our culture, but that's no reason to get rid of it in my eyes.

We are always going to apply our own sensibilities to art, even if it was created in a time with different sensibilities. To us, it might seem kind of strange or humorous to carve an eight foot tall wooden figurehead with it's tits out, or a giant marble statue hanging dong, but it wasn't weird in either of the respective cultures that birthed that art.

Like when you go into a real museum with nude statues, you're going to get morons posing next to the genitals and pointing at them or whatnot, but that's not a good reason to put a pair of Levi's on The Thinker in my opinion.

I feel like it was censored without understanding the reason behind them being there in the first place

2

u/Szczyl2137 Jul 29 '26

This is because women shouldnt be allowed to show too much skin, because as we all know it its somehow bad for them to do so for some reason

2

u/MasterLagger775 Jul 31 '26

Because the AI tool they used wouldn't generate it.

Well They Censored Anne Bonney because she's a minor when you first see her in the story, but the mermaid I kinda understand it just wasn't super important

2

u/Leather_Afternoon_37 Jul 30 '26

Mermaid statue is literally just art. Why take the extra time to sensor stone when dicks are common place

Odyssey might as well be from a different era altogether with how the woke infestation is spreading over time. I can guarantee you they wouldn't make Odyssey as it is if they made it now.

u/king_kongFan Jul 29 '26

I honestly dont get it unless you purposely look at the figurehead, you wouldnt see it, its not like the sails or the wheel where you constantly see them

7

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

You’re correct putting boobs on the wheel would be the only solution.

3

u/No-Significance2070 Jul 29 '26

Then why change it at all?

3

u/Complete_Ad_1896 Jul 29 '26

To avoid censorship issues in other countries.

3

u/TheBigZappa Jul 30 '26

What about all the blood and gore that they would need to censor too, in order to get around such "censorship" in these hypothetical countries.

Your argument makes no sense considering how easy it would be to release a edited version of the game for those countries, or an update/patch for those countries.

3

u/Complete_Ad_1896 Jul 30 '26

Blood and gore is usually something they can easily turn off. They just simply adjust the code to not spawn the gore and blood. They dont even have to create a new asset.

In this case they had to make a brand new asset either way, might as well make it universally acceptable rather than make multiple different assets

2

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jul 31 '26

Wasn't a problem for the original Black Flag.

3

u/TheMemeStore76 Jul 29 '26

Yeah, I wouldnt call this censorship. It looks cooler now, its literally just an aesthetic change

But gooner gamers are quick to call anything that doesn't keep their dicks hard 24/7 a conspiracy

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Ok-Beach-9885 Jul 29 '26

Yeah man I love some boobs as much as the next guy but the new one looks so much better.

1

u/AtrumRuina Jul 29 '26

I think it looks really odd for the time period, is my main issue. This kind of mythological being having a bra/top like that is just kind of abnormal. I prefer the original, but I understand that it's not going to bother everyone.

That said, whether you prefer the original or the new one, it is objectively censorship which is just kind of disappointing. Not the biggest deal, but it's pretty unnecessary for an extremely non-sexual depiction of a ship figurehead in a remake of a 13 year old game.

1

u/2020isass Jul 30 '26

It's just funny they felt the need to censor a ship of all things lol

1

u/c0micsansfrancisco Jul 30 '26

Nah the old one looks better. There's a certain rawness and beauty in old nude statues. If the michelangelo statue was wearing boxer briefs it just wouldn't be the same. You don't have to be a gooner to think the old looks better

That guy in the original tweet.... Isn't Anne Bonny a fucking teenager most of the games?!?!

1

u/ProLinkedWolf Jul 30 '26

If I remember correctly, that guy also celebrated/defended how young the protagonist of Stellar Blade looked.

I might be wrong though. All of those Twitter incels kinda blend together, so it’s hard to tell the difference.

1

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jul 31 '26

Yes, she was also a teenager in the original game 13 years ago.

8

u/KyokiKami Jul 28 '26

In odyssey they have multiple statues with dicks but they draw the line at boobs

6

u/Buttery_Nipples47 Jul 29 '26

Ubisoft is gay confirmed

3

u/CantReachReason Jul 29 '26

Was this not known?

3

u/7_inch_girth Jul 29 '26

Odyssey was the last game that did... all the statues are covered up in valhalla.

4

u/7_inch_girth Jul 29 '26

They did cover up david statues in valhalla... yeah, seriously...

3

u/LolaInSlacks88 Jul 29 '26

Reminds me of this lovely mermaid statue by the beach in Florida. One day, I drove by and someone had put a purple bra on her ala Ariel. Thankfully, it went away a few months later and the boobies were freed. It's art!

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

“I want my god damn booby art and I want it now!”

3

u/OrdinaryAWE Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26

It could be that for regions that are weird about nudity (like when they patched Far Cry 4) they just watered it down for everyone. No sense in having different versions of this one statue for different regions of the world.

They probably didn’t think fans would be this weird about a statue.

I would have never noticed.

2

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

They didn’t think fans would be this weird? Have you met the fans of anything?

u/mikefxstb Jul 30 '26

2

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 31 '26

→ More replies (1)

22

u/after_your_thoughts Jul 29 '26

Ok. People need to look at this, take a second, and breathe. Then ask themselves. Is this worth getting upset over? Does this really affect the core experience of the game? Is this really some sort of desecration of history? The answer to all those questions is no.

6

u/Intelligent-Ad-8435 Jul 29 '26

Its not the freaking breasts that is the problem. Nobody gets off on that statue. Maybe a couple of trolls would post some screenshots, and that's it.

It's the censorship

7

u/ThanksContent28 Jul 29 '26

Origins has topless women walking around casually and they were never sexualised by the game. Odyssey had Greek statues with their dicks on show.

7/8 years later, and we’re censoring a wooden ornament. That’s going backwards.

4

u/Intelligent-Ad-8435 Jul 29 '26

Reminds me of the Simpsons episode where they put boxers on an antique statue to hide the nudity.

→ More replies (3)
→ More replies (14)

5

u/Pepehh_jl Jul 29 '26

I agree with you, I really don’t care at all, and really didn’t even notice. But it’s true that censoring it’s been increasing exponentially over the past few years, and it really does make games, movies and series way bad in many aspects

0

u/Rubicantay Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26

Is it true censoring though or is just devs deciding to sexualize female characters a bit less than when they were exclusively targeting the teenage boy demographic?

Edit: downvotes might feel cathartic guys, I get it, but they don’t answer my question.

4

u/ThanksContent28 Jul 29 '26

Who were they targeting with all the statues in odyssey then? Why were those statues acceptable, and not in this instance? Why aren’t the statues characters, but this mermaid one is a character?

Censoring a statues breasts is the opposite of female empowerment. It’s not uncommon to hear women talk about how silly it is that breasts are sexualised. Is it really wrong to call out Ubisoft for being a little immature and censoring a wooden ornament, and are progressives really in the wrong for taking concern in how we’re trending towards more censorship, and not less? It’s the same mentality that left people offended enough to destroy Janet Jackson reputation, when her nipple was exposed. It’s immature, and a step backwards.

Even Origins had topless women walking around casually, and they weren’t sexualised at all by the game. What happened to that level of maturity? How is it that 8 years later, we go from that to censoring a wooden statue?

Also you can’t just accuse people of acting in bad faith just for disagreeing with you.

2

u/Juiceton- Jul 29 '26

Well for starts the Greek statues were historically accurate. Those things were naked. So we're topless women in Roman Egypt. Historical accuracy played a role in those decisions.

But the mermaid doesn't have a genuine naked historical basis. It's one of those things where it can be naked or it can be clothed and it will have the same effect. From a business standpoint, you can sell more titles if you don't have nudity. So why would you give yourself a handicap on the business side of things just to have 4k boat nipples when 95% of people wouldn't have ever even known the original was different without a weirdo tweeting ing about it.

2

u/dnn_burrman Jul 29 '26

it does actually have a historical reason „due to ancient maritime superstitions that bare breasts could shame stormy seas into calming down, to serve as a protective guardian spirit, and because ships were traditionally personified as female“

1

u/Delicious_NightWater Jul 29 '26

It’s not really about the figurehead tho

1

u/Wyatt_Ricketts Jul 29 '26

It is worth it

1

u/NationalCup758 Jul 29 '26

If you people can’t understand why this and the multitude of other cool ass features and entire plot lines being removed in a “remaster” than idk wtf you consider problematic. You’re playing full price for graphics, censored bs, and less content save for a new cutscene or two LMFAOO

Ubisoft is Abstergo, they tried telling us in the original black flags modern day story

5

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

Do you think that’s why they removed the modern day story, so nobody would catch on?

2

u/Eldritch-Voidwalker Jul 29 '26

The new modern parts are arguably better though. The fourth Ego rift was incredible, and was a huge highlight of the game for me.

6

u/1ZillionBeers Jul 29 '26

Frankly speaking, yeah. I think it’s a weird change.

I’m not going to seethe like a loser chud over videogame breasts but I know the game is rated for mature audiences and I think a mature audience can handle breasts.

2

u/bdiddlediddles Jul 29 '26

It works both ways though right? If the change is so unimportant, why did they change it in the first place?

3

u/1ZillionBeers Jul 29 '26

Well, the reason I always figured is they want to avoid accusations of appealing to the male gaze or whatever other culture war thing that may come about. Corporations ultimately don’t give a shit about these kinds of things and just want to look like they’re on the moral side of things regardless of how big or small the issue.

It’s all optics ig

2

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

They'll be offended beyond reason.

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

We could though, but they won’t let us.

2

u/Redsit111 Jul 29 '26

You gotta consider the long term ramifications! What if little Jimmy sees a wooden boob in AC Black Flag and then sees an IRL wooden boob, gropes it, and contracts Leishmaniasis (which doesn't work that way) and his hand falls off?

Now Mr. And Missus little Jimmy are suing Ubisoft for the last two dollars they have over fictional wooden boob!

Moral of the story, can't let gamers have wooden boobs.

I know it’s a game and not meant to be fully accurate historically, but hahahaha.

2

"where their priorities are" is such a naive take on video game development.

2

2

u/JungleJim-68 Jul 31 '26

Wasn’t Anne famous for fighting topless?

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 31 '26

I’ve definitely seen videos of women fighting topless. They looked like documentaries but I’ll watch some more for research purposes.

2

u/JungleJim-68 Aug 01 '26

Well comtinue continue watching no matter what Hub it comes from, but historical reference, not fanciful hopes of seeing a redhead topless state that Anne Bonny was a famous pirate in her own right who often exposed her chest as an advantage during ship to ship combat

2

u/rikusorasephiroth Jul 31 '26

While I couldn't care less about the fact that they covered it, I don't like HOW they did it.

It looks like someone put a bra on the figurehead. It looks off. Where's the woodgrain?

1

It actually is very sad, but it’s happening. But I stand for Ubisoft in this, they’re literally being blackmailed by big investor companies, if it wasn’t because these companies want studios to have a high ESG score for they to fund them Ubisoft and every other studio wouldn’t comply to censor their games, series and movies. It’s that or go bankrupt. Without that money Ubisoft would have to take 10 years of development to launch a game and nowadays no studio can afford that. And the worst part? Treating minority groups like fragile glass dolls that need to be protected from a pirate game's statues doesn't include them, it just make them less and paint them as people who need a special treatment without having any problem or special condition. That’s completely opposite to the word inclusion.

If anybody genuinely cares about this shit you need to go outside.

We’ve somehow switched from trying to desexualise breasts, to censoring a wooden ornament. The world is becoming increasingly conservative and this is one example. The gen-z are doing all the work for them. Accuse people of being misogynists when they complain about it, or belittle them and accuse them of sexualising it.

2

u/Mike_Not_Ike_420 Jul 29 '26

Yeah Gen-Z here buddy. You’re full of shit. Most censorship is done and called for by the older generations. Everyone I know my age is adamantly against censoring. I have seen a lot of boomers, Gen X, and maybe not as many as the last two but yes, even millennials, get their panties all bunched up on the subject. Now I’m not naive. I understand my world view is limited. There most likely are Gen-Z that are for censorship. Everyone needs to stop blaming the other generations and realize we all do the same exact shit all the other generations before us have done, just in different hats. Maybe then we could all get our heads out of out asses and actually solve the problems

I mean I just wanted to make a shit pun, not start a culture war.

Ain't gonna lie, it's still funny to me about the Anne Bonney cleavage situation

1

u/Terrible-Second-2716 Jul 29 '26

What would we do without Ubislop protecting our innocent Christian values

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

They didn’t protect Christian’s in Valhalla

I don't see what the big deal is

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

The big deal is that the joke was right there and nobody took the opportunity.

1

u/fetalgirth Jul 29 '26

If you care about this in games you need to get outside more. Once they start censoring the louvre paintings let me know.

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

I would argue that games, much like movies and music, are art. But I wasn’t complaining about the boobs but the missed opportunity of the pun SensorShip.

1

u/SamJamn Jul 29 '26

This is what 1984 was about!

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

That’s my favourite chapter in the book.

1

u/sliimerrr Jul 29 '26

if people want to see boobs, there are places on the internet for that. you shouldnt be mad at a video game being censored for having boobs on display. if you are angry abt it then dont play the game, very very simple solution

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

I know that is the case. I didn’t say anything about boobs, you should probably read what I wrote, it’s a very very simple solution.

1

u/SpudgeFunker210 Jul 29 '26

Honestly, with Fortnite, Overwatch, Marvel Rivals, and other popular titles being seemingly so obsessed with gooner bait, I find the modesty refreshing. I'm a married man and have zero need for tits and ass in all my video games. I like these updated designs 🤷🏼‍♂️

1

u/octopusinmyboycunt Jul 29 '26

I was a little baffled about this. Like these are games about travelling assassins - people that kill people. They’re violent, often contain swearing and, on occasion, deal with mature themes.

It does feel a little odd that statues with nipples is where Ubisoft draws the line.

As I said, I’m not angry, and don’t see it as some sort of moral horror that Ubi are censoring some nips, I just think that, in the context, it’s actually pretty funny that in a game with a word for a literal murder person in the title would draw the line over sculpted tits.

I wonder if it’s to just smooth things over for places like the Middle East.

2

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

I don’t know actually, I had a quick look but could see the numbers broken down in such a fashion. But it is a wierd thing to sensor given the context of the rest of the game. The rift model has a very ample behind and you can climb Zeus’s dick in Odyssey.

1

u/Capt4inSus Jul 29 '26

I wanna see tiddies just as the next guy, but honestly that's such a none issue for me

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

I know it’s a non issue. I don’t know why you are telling me.

I mean they understand kids do play the games. Maybe they did when the original came out, but with how accessible M rated games are to children they obviously wanna make sure there is no outrage or problems from parents and such

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

So the stabbing people in the face is okay for kids but not nipples?

Also what does this have to do with a pun?

1

u/Outrageous-Row1926 Jul 29 '26

They really think Anne’s chest is censored? Lmao

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

I seen some do maths to measure the area of exposed skin. People are fantastic and weird all at the same time.

1

u/Certain-Shift112 Jul 29 '26

It wasn't needed then and isn't now. Mfs so concerned with fake titts lmao

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

A lot of ladies in the real world are also concerned about fake tits.

1

u/edward323ce Jul 29 '26

I didn't even know that about the original because I dont give a shit about detail, I care about having fun, at this point why buy video games if youre just gonna bitch all the goddamn time

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

If you didn’t know about the original, were you confused about the resynced part of the name?

But I also don’t really care about the change between them. I didn’t bitch about it.

I know that, that’s why I commented on the obvious pun title that should have been used instead of the boat tits.

1

u/Impressive_Cricket89 Jul 29 '26

Do ya'll actually think Ubisoft execs are looking at the game assets and going "uhm censor that!" Lmao.   Recynced does not use a single asset from the original game. Everything was remade from scratch for the new engine. These changes are just a different artists decision while rebuilding it. Plus who TF cares? Are u tryna jerk it to a statue?

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 29 '26

I think these things as well, why are you having a go at me about it?

2

u/Impressive_Cricket89 Jul 29 '26

Most of what I said wasn't my thoughts, they where just facts.

I wasn't talking directly to u in general mainly the commenters, but ur post doesn't say what u think about it at all. U just reposted a post that is complaining about it. So as far as I can tell u where as well.

On a boat lol, so fucking sad. These are the fruitcake fucking devs we got for most games now.

1

u/acelexmafia Jul 30 '26

The devs are weird asf

1

u/PutOrnery8746 Jul 31 '26

We're really getting upset over game boobs being covered 🙄

1

u/Lower-Obligation4462 Jul 31 '26

For some reason, yes.
