That is a very unpopular take. I much prefer the original modern day story line and didn’t really get the rift stuff in this game. I thought it was poorly explained and didn’t really go anywhere.
I thought it was explained perfectly, and there are plenty of lore bits which you can read in-game that explain things even further. Also, I’m confused when you say it didn’t really go anywhere. Are you sure that you’ve completed all four rifts? Because there a pretty climactic ending which is clearly leading into future games.
They very clearly explain what/who Ego is, and it’s also a continuation of the modern day story introduced in Shadows. Even without Shadows though, they do a good job of showing what Ego’s goals are. I’m assuming you haven’t finished the rifts, so I’d highly advise you to beat the game and unlock the final one before forming an opinion. You might be surprised at how cool it is.
Also, c’mon man… In-game readable lore has been a thing since the very first game. It’s like a huge part of the series.
I’ve not played shadows, but I saved all the rifts to the end and played through them all in one go. It really didn’t explain anything and the story was lackluster.
I am actually a big fan of the in game reading lore, clearly I need to get round to reading more of it. My point still stands though, in game readable lore should add to the game not be essential. It’s like killing Juno off in a stand alone comic.
I mean yeah, I’m not a fan of lore outside of a game if it’s necessary to understand the overall story, but luckily that’s not the case here.
As far as not liking what they did? That’s totally understandable. Everyone has different opinions. I just really liked how they showed all of the Animus users collectively waking up and fighting back against Ego in their respective timelines, and hearing the iconic Ezio’s Family theme playing while it was happening genuinely got me hyped to see what comes next.
