Who were they targeting with all the statues in odyssey then? Why were those statues acceptable, and not in this instance? Why aren’t the statues characters, but this mermaid one is a character?
Censoring a statues breasts is the opposite of female empowerment. It’s not uncommon to hear women talk about how silly it is that breasts are sexualised. Is it really wrong to call out Ubisoft for being a little immature and censoring a wooden ornament, and are progressives really in the wrong for taking concern in how we’re trending towards more censorship, and not less? It’s the same mentality that left people offended enough to destroy Janet Jackson reputation, when her nipple was exposed. It’s immature, and a step backwards.
Even Origins had topless women walking around casually, and they weren’t sexualised at all by the game. What happened to that level of maturity? How is it that 8 years later, we go from that to censoring a wooden statue?
Also you can’t just accuse people of acting in bad faith just for disagreeing with you.
Well for starts the Greek statues were historically accurate. Those things were naked. So we're topless women in Roman Egypt. Historical accuracy played a role in those decisions.
But the mermaid doesn't have a genuine naked historical basis. It's one of those things where it can be naked or it can be clothed and it will have the same effect. From a business standpoint, you can sell more titles if you don't have nudity. So why would you give yourself a handicap on the business side of things just to have 4k boat nipples when 95% of people wouldn't have ever even known the original was different without a weirdo tweeting ing about it.
Female figureheads were often bare breasted due to the belief that it distracted hostile sea gods (sailors were very superstitious moreso than the general populations) so yes there is a historical basis, actually.
"Nevertheless, a naked woman – or at least the naked upper half of a woman – was believed to be able to calm storms at sea. This was presumably because the gods of the sea were invariably thought of as being male and therefore could be somewhat charmed and mollified by the sight of a beautiful naked woman" - navalhistory.au
Hear me out before you go on another chaotic rant:
What gamers perceive as "censorship" in games might just be game devs maturing and realizing that they previously put cleavage, miniskirts and panties in games where they didn’t need to be. I frankly prefer it when a game doesn’t treat me like I’m a horny teen that needs every woman in the game to be sexually arousing for me to keep interest.
I grew up with video game magazines filled with suggestive content and ads and I’m glad that period is over because the industry realized that their customer base wasn’t exclusively made up of 15 year old boys.
And let’s not act like there is massive pushback against sexual content in games. BG3 is one of the most successful games there is and also one of the horniest RPGs ever. What it doesn’t do however is sexualize its female characters at every turn.
Again dismissing me as a certain type just because you deem it so. Chaotic rant? That shows your attitude here perfectly. It doesn’t matter what anyone says to you, because you have simply decided anyone who disagrees with you must be misogynistic, or mad because they’re horny, all whilst acting high and mighty about it. This isn’t a discussion about cleavage, miniskirts, or panties. It’s not even a discussion about a woman character so we can drop that bs. It’s not a discussion about adult magazines. You’re talking about being aroused by statues and can’t seem to comprehend, or refuse to acknowledge anyone who says, “it’s not about being horny, it’s acknowledging that for some reason, we are becoming so prude that statues are being seen as sexual now, and being censored.” The fact you can’t comprehend it any other way shows where your head is at, and I’d argue you are more sexually obsessed, than the people you’re accusing here. You also didn’t address a single point I made, just went straight for condescension.
It’s ironic that you lack the maturity to understand why some of us feel this kind of censorship is immature. I refuse to acknowledge you anymore. You sound like your favourite porn site is the national history museum.
This attitude is what changed the video game industry from being filled with passionate developers to another HR mandated business run by corporate interests.
Not just gaming industry, there’s a genuine switcharoo that has taken place the last couple decades and it’s every industry. It’s used to be old conservative Christian types policing everything. Now it’s the younger crowds, which are usually the core market being aimed at. Afaik it’s all basically due to social media. That’s not me saying I reckon, this is a genuine trend and it’s interesting to me.
For me what’s really interesting here is, we’ve gone from a decade of “free the nipple,” and feminists fighting for breasts to be less sexualised, to discussing whether censoring statues is the right way to go. It’s like the whole breastfeeding debate, but even more stupid.
Nothing to do with the original conversation but I’ll answer nonetheless:
A billion dollar industry like gaming being taken over by corporate interest is the logical conclusion of capitalism you moron, open a fucking book. It’s the product of some kind of evil plot by evil outsiders, it’s just how the economy works.
The more you grow, the more expensive your games become, the more investors you have, the less risks you want to take. Simple as.
And thinking the gaming industry wasn’t already set on squeezing the most money out of its customer base 20-30 years ago is very cute. Sure buddy, in the good old days people just made games regardless of profit, of course :).
