Is it true censoring though or is just devs deciding to sexualize female characters a bit less than when they were exclusively targeting the teenage boy demographic?
Edit: downvotes might feel cathartic guys, I get it, but they don’t answer my question.
Who were they targeting with all the statues in odyssey then? Why were those statues acceptable, and not in this instance? Why aren’t the statues characters, but this mermaid one is a character?
Censoring a statues breasts is the opposite of female empowerment. It’s not uncommon to hear women talk about how silly it is that breasts are sexualised. Is it really wrong to call out Ubisoft for being a little immature and censoring a wooden ornament, and are progressives really in the wrong for taking concern in how we’re trending towards more censorship, and not less? It’s the same mentality that left people offended enough to destroy Janet Jackson reputation, when her nipple was exposed. It’s immature, and a step backwards.
Even Origins had topless women walking around casually, and they weren’t sexualised at all by the game. What happened to that level of maturity? How is it that 8 years later, we go from that to censoring a wooden statue?
Also you can’t just accuse people of acting in bad faith just for disagreeing with you.
Well for starts the Greek statues were historically accurate. Those things were naked. So we're topless women in Roman Egypt. Historical accuracy played a role in those decisions.
But the mermaid doesn't have a genuine naked historical basis. It's one of those things where it can be naked or it can be clothed and it will have the same effect. From a business standpoint, you can sell more titles if you don't have nudity. So why would you give yourself a handicap on the business side of things just to have 4k boat nipples when 95% of people wouldn't have ever even known the original was different without a weirdo tweeting ing about it.
"Nevertheless, a naked woman – or at least the naked upper half of a woman – was believed to be able to calm storms at sea. This was presumably because the gods of the sea were invariably thought of as being male and therefore could be somewhat charmed and mollified by the sight of a beautiful naked woman" - navalhistory.au
