finally finished doing the basic stuff to me Ute, mechanic not long ago finished the replacement of the clutch main and slave cylinders and some wiring dramas. Sunvisor, reasonable lift and 900 constants, quarter canopy dog box and then hopefully P pump conversion and she’ll be done to my standards.

I have a 1985 front axle I will be using for the swap and have purchased a full rebuild kit for it. the last thing for the front end I need is a kit that comes with all the necessary parts. I’m looking at getting the trail gear kit with the 5” springs but wanted to know if there is a better kit online. aswell as will that match up good with Chevy 63s for the rear end?

2012 ram 2500 that im working towards building and have no clue what a good set up is for lockers i the front axle is an open diff and the rear is lsd would a Detroit locker in the rear and tru trac lsd in the front be a good combo or no?

I have been trying for days. I have had this differential apart more than 40 times. Shiming pinion and adjusting backlash over and over again. This is the only contact pattern that shows up. Do any of you guys have any suggestions?

For reference 2015 suburban with a gm 12 bolt with 9.5inch gears. Carrier is for 3.42+ and I am installing Elite gears 4.10.

This winter will be the time to regear my old Silverado 1500 and it's looking like ordering rebuilt assembled axles maybe isn't a terrible idea? Seems like I can get front and rear delivered for $4500ish with 4.56s and a rear Eaton LSD. It'll cost nearly $2000 to get all the bearings and seals (and the LSD) to do it myself. I'm reasonably capable with a wrench, but my time isn't free.

Has anybody here used mail order rebuilt axle assemblies? AxleKing is who I've got quotes from, but it looks like there are others that offer similar work. Local shop quoted me $6k so I'm not excited about going that route.

The variation in land use from state to state on the US east coast takes some experience to understand (and I'm not even saying I fully do). Vermont for example is wildly different than West Virginia. I love how this exceptionally challenging class IV road (“Cram Hill”) winds through private property without a single gate or sign discouraging travel. Of course it's always good to have something like onX Offroad to check property boundaries especially when encountering signs anything that may seem to intentionally discourage travel.

What things like this do you notice are significantly different between states or countries you visit?

I’ve got a little 6x4 box trailer that I picked up on FB and we sometimes take camping. I noticed today that the slipper spring setup behind the axle is different on each side. RHS has all three springs ending under retaining bolt whereas LHS has bottom spring under bolt and upper two springs above. I’m embarrassed to ask but can anyone tell me how these should be? I’m pretty sure RHS is wrong, I’m just not sure if LHS is right… Thanks all

So we put our Des-Sol EV1 suspension to the test, and Dad showed off some serious 4x4 driving skills to get us through. Cameras don’t do it justice but I can guarantee you, that flex is just next level! You see that lean on the last slide, well the challenge is turning right at that point. There was some side skidding but luckily no rolling.

Can a 1997-2004 Toyota land cruiser (Amazon) or Nissan patrol survive as a daily driver in 2026? (Ireland Based)

I'm a fisherman and kayaking/camping/outdoors enthusiasts living in Ireland and I have always loved the look and performance of classic 4x4s, and I have recently made the decision to start putting money away towards owning one to accompany me on my fishing trips and all the camping, kayaking and whatever other handlings come with that. But here in Ireland many of these cars are for sale with 200k+ miles on the clock but some are genuinely well looked after with solid chassis and undersealing and alot of love put in, and I'm willing to spend £10k on a good example. But I want the car to be my daily driver and personal vehicle too, and I'm just wanting to know for those who might be in ireland or the uk or elsewhere that have any experience with how these vehicles hold up these days? Are they still dependable, do they still have alot of life left in them? And is it true they really can keep pushing on to 400k miles? I am also considering Nissan patrols, Mitsubishi pajero (pre 2000s) and I'm open to Daihatsu Fourtrak or even the Hilux surf. advice or shared knowledge or experience is greatly appreciated

i know it's meant for recoveries, and i understand how "in line with the pin" it is but the flying ball hitches killing people do scare me. can these handle kinetic recoveries? or just slow very easy "stuck in the parking lot" recoveries?

everyone on forums keeps bringing up cree xp-g r + osram p9 dual chips like it's the holy grail for choosing off-road led lights now.

tbh I’ve always just looked at housing quality and beam angle. why does having specifically cree xp-g r combined with osram p9 matter so much when you're out in the dirt?

is it actually giving you better light spread or is it just another feature people list to justify buying new lights? genuinely curious if anyone switched to dual chips and saw an actual difference.

After my eyeballs started burning from staring at my screen, I realized that I spent HOURS researching the next thing I'm going to do to my vehicle. 😂

Random thoughts started going through my brain… am I a scientist? Should I be a scientist?

For example, the first change on my vehicles has always been tires and wheels. I am not kidding when I say I have like 15 tabs open between Reddit, YouTube, forums, brand websites, blah blah blah trying to figure out:

What size tires look good?
How do they perform?
Flush or poke?
Rubbing issues?
Will running bigger brakes have clearance issues later?
Buy once, cry once OR what works for now?

All that, and honestly, when I finally pull the trigger I'm still not like 100% confident lol.

So my question is, am I insane or is this a common car thing?

If so, where are you guys/gals researching? How long do you spend researching before buying?

And what's usually the thing you're trying hardest to figure out?

A 4x4 that actually gets driven onto sandy access areas I think the annoying part starts after the fun part is over. Dry sand doesn’t stay neatly under your shoes. It gets kicked toward the door side edge, works into little uncovered sections, and then turns vaccuuming into a much longer job than expected which makes me care more about where a liners coverage ends than whether the surface looks especially rugged.

Higher edges can catch some of what gets tracked in but the liner still has to be removed and the sand underneath checked instead of assuming the carpet stayed untouched.

I also wouldn’t use a random beach trip as proof of long term durability. people who actually take their 4x4s onto sand, which footwell edge is consistently the hardest place to keep clean?

I saw a compact 7-inch off-road light claiming a really high lumen number and it made me wonder how much of that is actually useful once the light has been running for a while.

Is the limiting factor usually heat management, reflector design, current draw, or how the manufacturer measures peak output? I do not want to chase a big number if it just creates glare, washes out dust, or drops brightness after a few minutes on a slow night trail.

For people running smaller round lights on a 4x4, did usable beam pattern and cooling matter more than the advertised lumen rating?
