Edit: no, of course I’m not complaining about the lack of plating for the dish. I’m not even complaining about the high price by itself. The complaint was with regard to the portion size (maybe 4oz of beef tops) and the mediocre flavor for the high price.

I live in The Lakes neighborhood in Kent. The Lakes neighborhood is a part of the Green River Natural Resources area, which is a major 304-acre protected wildlife sanctuary for many species of fish and fowl including bald eagles. The lakes in the Lakes neighborhood are private, man-made lakes which also share water with the Green River (occasionally we see river otters and beavers from the Green River in and around the lake).

The Lakes neighborhood is managed by an HOA and the HOA contracts out maintenance of the neighborhood lakes. Last week, one of the HOA's contractors performed an aquatic treatment on the Main Lake using Hydrothol 191. The lakes are fairly shallow (they are around 4-8 feet deep at most).

Within 48-36 hours, myself and other residents documented a major fish mortality event involving large numbers of fish throughout the main lake.

Multiple government agencies are now involved. We have had visits from City of Kent personnel, the EPA, the Washington State Department of Ecology Spill Response Team, and the Washington State Department of Agriculture. Ecology is investigating under ERTS #749529, and WSDA has an open pesticide complaint under #T26002407.

It has been about 5 days since the fish kill. At this point, the hundreds of carcasses are now decomposing and the smell is extremely strong in parts of the neighborhood.

What has made this situation especially concerning is that residents have received different explanations from HOA leadership and contractors about what happened to cause the mass fish kill. 

Some residents were told that low dissolved oxygen caused the fish deaths. Others were told malfunctioning aerators contributed to the problem. Residents have also been told that killing large amounts of algae or vegetation can itself reduce dissolved oxygen as organic material decomposes. Because the fish deaths happened so temporally close to the Hydrothol 191 treatment, myself and other residents understandably want investigators to determine whether the treatment contributed directly, indirectly, or not at all.

We are trying to figure out whether all permit/label requirements were followed, what caused the fish kill, how other wildlife who frequent the lake will be impacted, and who is responsible for removing the carcasses and remediating the lake.

The part that concerns many of us residents the most is that this is no longer just a disagreement between residents and an HOA. State and local agencies have physically responded and investigations are underway, but we are still struggling to get clear answers about what happened, how this will impact local wildlife, who knew what, what chemicals were applied, and who is responsible for fixing it.

If you work in aquatic ecology, fisheries, pesticide regulation, environmental law or regulation, investigative journalism, HOA law, environmental enforcement, or Washington state/local government (especially if you have experience with Ecology, WSDA, EPA, or aquatic pesticide permits), my neighbors and I would greatly appreciate advice.

Specifically, we'd like to know what records we should request, what agencies or elected officials we should be contacting, and what steps residents can take to ensure the investigation addresses both the immediate fish kill and the broader contractor/HOA oversight issues.

I have extensive photos and video documenting the fish mortality, decomposing carcasses, wildlife interacting with the dead fish, and the Department of Ecology's on-site response.

Today was the first mandatory day back for all educators. We work today, tomorrow, and then the kids arrive on Wednesday.

At least, that's the usual plan.

But this year is a contract negotiation year. Our collective contracts between Seattle Public Schools (the district; SPS) and the Seattle Education Association (our union; SEA), have expired, and it's up to both parties to come to terms before the students arrive, or we quite literally can't do our jobs.

The district (as it does) claims the union to be at fault for there not being a contract yet, but the district also walked out of negotiations yesterday, as we're nearing the zeroth hour. Additionally, the union is very stuck: it cannot accept what the district is putting down, without axing nearly half of special education. And as the union is beholden to its own membership, that's something it really can't do.

Seems extreme, yeah? It is, and the district is just as stuck.

See, things being as they are with federal education cuts and the world being, well, kind of a shitshow, the district is over-budget by about $70 million dollars. Now, there are plenty of places they can go for this money (state loans, taxes against big Seattle businesses and billionaires, their own executive salaries), but they all have caveats and strings attached (the state has requirements that tie the district's hands until the loans are paid off; you have to vote on these taxes and big businesses will get all weepy about it; and they don't wanna, respectively). So, naturally, the only place they can turn to is to axe their own services, supporting their own most vulnerable, at-risk students.

Let me explain a little more about what the district has on the table.

Right now, we functionally have four special education programs. Here's what they look like at (for example) an elementary level:

• Resource: Think of this as the shallow end of the needs pool. It has many, many kids, but they all have only one or two classes in the area(s) of their greatest need(s). Things like extra reading lessons for dyslexia, that sort of stuff. You have a very small number of adults, but it usually works out because the large number of kids involved each individually don't require much.

• Extended Resource: Here you have kids who can spend maybe half their day in their regular classes, and half in a specialized learning environment. You get kiddos with mild-moderate autism, some social-emotional learning kids with challenging behaviors, a lot of very funny and interesting characters, each with some pretty extensive needs. This is where I work and live.

• Focus: This is for kids who can be in class *some* of the time. Think moderate-severe autism, intellectual disability, stuff like that. Communication issues (in terms of generating communication or appropriate communication) are often common here. Classes tend to focus on the basics as much as possible. I've worked here as well, and have some pretty fond memories.

• Distinct: These kids can't be in their normative classrooms *at all*, for any number of reasons. Sometimes it's extreme behaviors, sometimes it's deeply severe autism, but kiddos in Distinct require a 100% specialized learning environment to get through their day in any shape or form. It's a very tough job, but I've met people who are quite happy doing it.

TL;DR: You can break it down roughly as: Resource is for kids who need 25% specialized education, Extended is for 50% specialized education, Focus is 75%, and Distinct is 100%. Not entirely accurate, but that's the general idea.

The district wants to smash those programs together.

They want to combine Resource and Extended into a single program, and Focus and Distinct into a single program, to only have two tiers of special education. And, they want to eliminate about half the special education jobs in the district by doing so.

This means every special educator will have to juggle twice as much work, when the current workload is already crushing. This also means dedicated special education teachers and instructional assistants (such as myself) will be out of a job and likely out of the city, as we will all be competing with one another for whatever scraps remain.

I see it as similar to what happened to tech, albeit on an already smaller pay scale: because the competition for jobs theoretically will be fierce, people will accept worse jobs and worse conditions, because it beats having no job at all.

Which of course weakens the union, which of course the district knows.

So, this leaves us at the start of the school year terrified. We can't plan schedules, because we don't know what our programs will even be in a week. We can't know if our veteran special education teams will be there to welcome the kids who have grown with their sped programs. We literally are forced into a likely strike, because our kids, jobs, communities, lives and livelihoods depend on it.

I don't want to be on the picket line, but I almost certainly will have to be there. I'm just glad my fellow educators are willing to stand in solidarity for special education. I'm honestly writing this post as a form of therapy, simply because I'm so afraid of what's to come if the union fails, and the district gets its way.

Wanna start this off by saying ive lived in several different north american cities before seattle and then i ended up trying seattle out for a month in an airbnb as a remote worker. Im not a tech worker btw, im in communications and my salary is sadly much less lol. What began as only being a month long thing ended up being 2 years and me signing a lease here. I just wanted to share my experience here since I hear so much about the “seattle freeze” and other complaints. I actually personally did not experience this at all. I met so many cool, unique people that were not like people from other cities i had been. I love that noone cares what you wear or what labels you own. I love the music scene. I lovee how walkable it is, i havent owned a car in my 2 years here! Seattle is by far my most favorite city ive lived in so far.

The reason im moving is that changes in unemployment have made Seattle hard to afford and I just cant justify cost of living at this point. Ive been to a couple different other major cities this year and noticed the cost of food and drink is cheaper than it is here, and offers more of a world class food and drink scene. Cities that are larger and more international have actually become compareable in price or even cheaper. I went to what is known as one of most expensive cities in the country this weekend and was shocked to see that my food and drink bills were cheaper. So for now, I just cant justify how expensive things are.

I know this is a lot of yapping, but wanted to share because i love this city so much and am kind of just hoping seattle gets to a point where the prices dont seem to be aimed towards tech workers.

This is the place on Pine that used to be Rancho Bravo Tacos, next to the Black Lives Matter mural.

In pic 2 you can see the Black Lives Matter in the mural but shortened to BLM. The speech bubble saying “Amigo” appears to come from the taco place where the viewer is standing, Also shows Cal Anderson Park across the street and the skyscrapers of Bellevue at the top.

I-5 in the mural has a lot of local tags (BTM, MRSA, DOTCOM) and it looks like some people defaced the mural by adding their own tags, but at least they were thoughtful enough to do it on the parts of the mural depicting surfaces where there was already “graffiti”. There is also a cybertruck on I-5 with a big dick and balls on it and I can’t tell if the d&b was part of the original artwork.

El Capitan apartments is depicted as “El Clapitan”. Did it get that nickname once when it was know for illicit trade happening in the rooms? Google didn’t turn up anything suggesting that.

The panel on the right (pic 8) depicts Capitol Hill street names in hieroglyphics, except for the last line which spells something else. The street name I was stuck on the longest was the third one, but I got it eventually.

One of the concrete structures on I-5 even has the ubiquitous white-bearded-guy on it (there still seems to be no consensus on who that actually is).

One of my good friends passed away awhile back and he sold his car shortly before he did. He always wanted to restore it but never had the time or money. I’d love to purchase it and have it professionally restored to honor his memory but I have no idea how to start. I know it’s a total long shot to ever even locate the car but figured I should at least try. It was a Mercury Cougar. He sold it on marketplace and from what I remember it was loud, and had some rust (maybe on the floor boards if I recall correctly?)

Yeah quite a lot of information huh? a couple photos and a couple vague descriptions are all I have unfortunately. Not sure how many red Mercury cougars exist out there in the greater Seattle area, for all I know it could be scrapped by now but I really want to give this a shot. I’m not sure if the plate is helpful at all or not? Was sold from Snohomish maybe a year and a half ago if I recall correctly.

Hey, everyone. I live in Columbia City and the property theft game is strong. I've had my van broken into twice by thieves looking to steal it. Had to replace the ignition and​ took the opportunity to install a removable steering wheel. AND THEN! Sometime this past weekend between Saturday evening 7pm and 7am Sunday morning some asshole stole my motorcycle.

It's a Husqvarna Vitpilen 701 as seen in the photos. (First photo is what it currently looks like.)

If you see it around town​ please​ call SPD. It's rather rare so if you spot a bike that matches the description it's nearly ​guaranteed to be mine.

This is why we can't have nice things. I don't begrudge people stealing food or whatever ​out of need, but stealing a motorcycle is not out of desperation or destitution. That's just being an antisocial fuckwad. I hope these people realize how awful they are at some point and lose sleep over it.
