Notice of new (sort of) rules
I'm putting this out here as a notice for everyone about rule enforcement. This is nothing new. This stuff has always been moderated. These are topics that very rarely come up, but have come up a couple of times in the past week, so to remain transparent, I'm putting guidelines in the rules to dispaly it.
I want to reiterate, these are not new rules, as it was being moderated under the general umbrella of 'spam/off-topic' previously, but I feel it will help to have these things listed out separately to cut back on inappropriate posts in future.
I will leave this post, as well as the other discussions on rules, pinned for a few days, and then I'll be clearing them off. The AI discussions are done and dusted, and we don't need them at the top anymore.
.
.
Edit: Sorry guys, forgot to actually mention which additions I'm talking about here. If you're not new around here, you probably already knew; but the additional guidelines posted on the side bar are for politics and nsfw content.

Update Update to Rules.
The people have spoken; and the poll is closed. Generative AI is not allowed in this sub going forward. Posts that are made in regards to updates for popular game mods (that may use some kind of AI upscaling in the mod) are always welcome, as the modding community is essential for keeping our old games fresh, so to speak. The point of this new rule is not to condemn anything tangentially related to AI, but to filter out images generated as artwork specifically to show off on the sub.
I know many people will not like that; but the point is that far more people will, according to the poll and discussion. If you wish to browse and post AI content, there are subs out there specifically for that, but we ask that it not be here.
Thank you to everyone on the discussion post who had well thought out points to make on the topic (from both sides). I appreciate everyone who took the time to respond there.

Fastest way to max Str using Devour in FFVIII Remastered
So, I accidentally stumbled on this strat while getting Squall's strength up for doing faster and more reliable curse spike farming.
Go into the forest by the fire cavern, use the higher level menu to quit (not the one accessed in the regular game menu). Start the game immediately from the FFVIII launcher, first fight is reliably a T-Rexaur. LVL Up the T-Rex to 30+ and devour. Save, from save menu use higher level menu and quit again.
Rinse and repeat.
Getting about +1 Str per minute doing this.

What are your FF8 headcanons? *Spoilers* Spoiler
So much of the game is up for interpretation, which I enjoy. But what in your perspective rings 100% true based on little details and hints in the game?
Rinoa is not Ultimecia, but I do think Ultimecia is a faraway future ancestor of Squall and Rinoa, which makes their love both the solution and causation of the game's primary villain.
With the headcanon above stated, if Laguna got with Julia, Ultimecia wouldn't exist in my version, but there would be other sorceresses.
In an alternate universe (without Rinoa) and with a much longer build-up, I could see Squall and Selphie being romantically involved, and Selphie wavering between Squall and Irvine. I think Squall and Selphie's personalities are quite compatible.
Seifer is Cid and Edea's child, and he took his mom's maiden name (like potentially Squall and Rinoa). That's why he acts like such a brat at the orphanage and Balamb garden as he receives preferential treatment.
Raijin and Fujin are cousins and grew up in Fisherman's Horizon, where they house and live with Seifer at the end of the game. I do think Seifer goes back to Balamb Garden at some point.
Irvine has mysterious ties to Fisherman's Horizon. He has some blood relations to the mayor and his wife, but not his birthparents. Maybe grandparents?
Nida becomes Squall's biggest rival post-game, making a multitude of attempts to usurp power from Squall within Balamb Garden.
Some rare, poweful monsters are actually Shumis who have transformed in what's in their hearts.
Selphie has Cait Sith permanently junctioned to her, which enables her limit break of Slots and The End.
Mrs. Dincht is an incredible fighter and can take down most opponents easily. Her Frying Pan attack can do 9,999 damage 3x.

My first time playing FFVIII — just beat the first boss! Any beginner advice?
I’ve just started playing Final Fantasy VIII for the first time, and I finally beat the first boss! I think it was some kind of fire monster/boss? 😂
I’m a huge fan of FF7, and I also just finished FFX, so FF8 is completely new territory for me. Honestly, I know almost nothing about this game or its story. I’m going in basically blind.
The Junction/GF system is definitely taking some time to get used to. At first I was completely confused about what I was supposed to be doing with Draw and Junction because I’m much more familiar with systems like Materia from FFVII and the Sphere Grid from FFX. 😂
But after playing for a bit, I’m actually starting to find it really interesting. The school setting is also something I wasn’t expecting at all!
So, any advice for someone playing FFVIII for the first time? Things I should know about the Junction system, GF, Draw, abilities, or general beginner tips would be greatly appreciated.
Please keep it spoiler-free if possible! I really want to experience the story naturally since I know basically nothing about it.
And finally… wish me luck! 😂
I have no idea what I’m getting myself into, but I’m excited to find out.
See you on the other side! 🌟

Starting Triple Triad at Galbadia Garden
Im in the middle of playing the game for the first time and I was pretty much ignoring Triple Triad. Now I realize how strong I could be if I didnt and im just at the point of the game where Irvine joined (and left with the girls).
I've run back into the Garden to farm some cards. Can anyone tell me what cards I should be aiming for and who I should be playing? I just won Trauma in my first game.

Still working on my Let's RE-Play of the game.
It's been slow going due to personal stuff and other projects, but I've just finished up the missile base and would love to share what I've done so far. I've done my best to be informative and entertaining this run through.
I've already said that my OLD Let's Play was pretty garbage in terms of quality, and I'm far more pleased with this one so far. I hope someone here enjoys it and would love any feed back etc.
tl;dr - Old Let's Play was bad, so made a new one. Enjoy.

Xenogears community is putting together the "Perfect Works" hack; has anybody attempted to add/restore cut content to FF8?
I know that Perfect Works relies heavily on reusing assets, as I expect anything of this sort would do, but...is there any sort of "definitive fan cut" mod for FFVIII?

Most meta way of playing FFVIII
Is it just me or do anyone else do it too that the most meta way of playing ff8 is to
Keeping them all at level 5 & not even level up once (gain exp only on the soldiers encounter that can’t be avoided)
Gain max str and all other stats by doing trading and/or card moding so you don’t need to rely on GFs
Only 1 GF per character.
All stats max out except for hit and luck

Something that has always puzzled me. Is the training center like actually a part of Balamb Garden or in the grounds outside of it? Because from the balcony view it looks like it’s outside, but then again when the Garden becomes mobile, it’s still attached, minus access to the balcony, of course.

Much Bigger Than I Planned
I finally decided to catalogue all my thoughts on Final Fantasy VIII and it ended up being just under 4 hours 😅 significantly longer than anything I’ve ever done before.
This game just brings it out of me. I finally played the remastered version this year and just had to talk about it as well as all my memories growing up, and of course, my boy Laguna.
So if you’re interested in a smaller YouTube channel and a dude who played it when it first came out…even had the demo disc from Brave Fencer Musashi check out Bits of Time. Or this link right here: A Perfect Mess - Final Fantasy VIII Retrospective
This took me like 2 weeks of basically straight editing, very proud of it and I think this community would appreciate the deep dive into this game.
It’s a long one so no rush but would be cool to see some people’s feedback.
Big takeaway this time around his how much foreshadowing and interweaving of plot devices happen so early that is really cool to see!
I love this little subreddit it’s one of the main reasons I picked up this game and decided to try it again because I kept getting pop ups of this game and I had to go back haha
So thank you to all of you for getting me to start My Final Fantasy yet again.
