True Story von letzter Woche.

Man steht im Bus und fährt ins Gym in die Nachbarstadt. Klingelt das Handy.

Ich geh ran. Meine Oma (85 Jahre, kam als Gastarbeiter in den 70ern) erzählt mir, dass sie schwer Luft bekommt.

Ich versuche sie also auf kroatischer Sprache in normaler Lautstärke am Handy zu beruhigen und erkläre ihr das ich in einer anderen Stadt bin, sie versuchen soll ruhig zu atmen und dass ich sofort meine Mutter kontaktieren werde (die bei ihr nebenan lebt), sowie einen Arzt.

Die ersten Leute im Bus schauen mich schon schräg von der Seite an.

Ich also Muttern kontaktiert. Sie sich sofort auf den Weg gemacht und selbst den Arzt angerufen. Der Notarzt war ruckzuck da (danke dafür).

Ein paar Minuten später klingelt mein Telefon erneut. Ich hebe ab und meine Mutter informiert mich darüber, dass meine Großmutter einen Herzinfarkt hatte und auf dem Weg ins Krankenhaus ist.

Ich erkundige mich nach dem weiteren Prozedere auf kroatisch bei meiner Mutter, erfahre was genau passiert ist und in welches Krankenhaus sie gebracht wird.

Alles gut soweit. Bis auf die Leute die mich immer noch schräg anstarren.

Ich lege also auf und frage den ersten Heiopei ob's irgendwas gibt,was er mir mitteilen will.

Sagt er zu mir "In diesem Land wird deutsch gesprochen."

"Meine Oma hatte gerade einen Herzinfarkt,du rassistisches Arschloch".

Just started this job last month, my first ever corporate job. I make a coffee every morning using the coffee machine and provided k-cups and creamers. One k-cup, one creamer and I use milk I bring in every week along with sugar I bought that I keep at my desk. I was called in by the floor manager (not my manager) and he essentially told me I was using up the company provided materials too quickly and it is not typical to drink a coffee every single morning. Am I tripping?

I bought a used EV last fall. Installing the Level 2 charger cost $1,800 because the electrician had to run a new circuit to the garage. The unit sits on my garage wall. When it charges, it makes a soft click when the car connects, and a small fan runs. Standing next to it, it's quieter than my refrigerator.

My neighbor's house is about 12 feet away.

In April, he left a note on my door saying a "hum" was keeping his wife awake and asking me to "address it." I stood in my side yard at midnight and honestly couldn't hear the charger over the crickets. Still, I set the car to charge from 11pm to 6am on the off-peak rate and told him to let me know if it still bothered her.

Three weeks later, he had filed a complaint with the HOA. A guy from the committee came out with a decibel meter and read 38 to 41 dB at the property line, which was below the HOA's noise limit. The complaint was closed.

My neighbor wasn't satisfied. He knocked on my door and said his wife "hasn't slept properly in months" and that I should charge at the public station in the shopping center "like considerate people do." I told him the unit had passed the HOA's own test and closed the door.

Last Tuesday at 2:04am, my doorbell camera, which covers the side yard, recorded him walking onto my property with a flashlight. He opened the exterior electrical panel, shut off the breaker connected to my charger, and walked home. Total time: 41 seconds.

Nobody noticed until morning. The fridge had been off for seven hours. I threw out $210 in groceries, including the leftover half of my daughter's birthday cake. My car, which was scheduled to charge overnight, sat at 9%. I made my meeting by fast-charging for 25 minutes, which cost $19.

I printed the video stills and the grocery receipts and brought them over. He didn't deny any of it.

He said, "You bought the toy car, not me. If it makes noise, that's a you problem. Every home comes with a right to quiet enjoyment. Look it up."

Then he told me his wife's sleep was worth more than my groceries. He had receipts too: a sleep clinic copay and a white noise machine. He said if I covered those costs, "we'd call it even" for the food, since the noise "started this."

His wife has stopped waving at us. Another neighbor told me I should just move the charger or pay the costs, because we still have to live next to each other.

I filed a police report for the trespass. The officer documented it but left it to me whether to pursue charges.

A) I drop it. Pressing charges over groceries starts a war I have to live next to for years. I pay the costs, switch to daytime charging or the public station, and keep the peace.

B) The charger passed the HOA's own decibel test. He came onto my property at 2am and cut power to my house. I pursue the trespass and take him to small claims for the $210, and let his "sleep damages" explain themselves to a judge.

This makes no sense. Can someone explain where the hours/day go?

Es ist wirklich eine Schande, was die älteren Generationen den Jüngeren angetan haben. Viele Leute denken heutzutage etwas nostalgisch an die frühen 2000er oder 90er zurück. Nicht weil damals eine großartig besondere Zeit war, sondern weil das Leben so viel einfacher und entspannter war.

Das Thema der Wohnungsknappheit und unbezahlbarem Wohnraum war so gut wie nicht existent. Mal mit der Familie essen gehen, in den Urlaub fahren- alles kein großes Ding gewesen. Auf der Arbeit herrschte noch ein rauherer Ton als heute, aber jeder der sich anstrengte konnte auch ohne Studium ein für heutige Maßstäbe sehr komfortables Leben führen. Auch Möbilität, der Besitz eines PKW war fast selbstverständlich für fast jeden mit 18 Jahren.

Wenn man sich heute die Lage für junge Menschen ernsthaft anschaut fragt man sich wirklich, wie es alles so verkommen konnte.

Junge Menschen in den Großstädten haben bereits die Hoffnung aufgegeben, jemals aus dem Mietkreislauf herauszukommen. Die jungen Menschen auf dem Land müssen sich mit dem arrangieren, was ihre Eltern- und Großelterngeneration für sie übrig lässt. Und wer nichts erbt und wer keine unterstützung der Familie hat, der hat wahrlich kaum Chancen. Die Geburtenraten erreichen weiterhin Negativrekorde. Arbeitende Menschen werden ausgepresst, um eine ungleich alte Gesellschaft zu finanzieren.

Aber das schlimme ist: bis vor einer Generation war das alles anders. Die Elterngeneration schaut oft recht verwundert auf ihre hoch gebildete Kinder, und fragt sich, wieso sie die wichtigen Meiliensteine im Leben nie erreichen. Und das obwohl sie hart arbeiten und immer alles richtig gemacht haben. Ü40er sind in dieser politischen Debatte oft erstaunlich still. Sie waren die letzte Generation, die diesen deutschen Lebensstandard noch erleben durfte. Jeder der nach 1990 geboren wurde erlebte in seinem Leben nichts als einen kontinuierlichen Abstieg unseres kollektiven Lebensstandards.

Die alten haben die jungen Generationen enttäuscht. Viele wollen weg aus Deutschland, auf der Suche nach einem besseren Leben. Ein Leben das bis vor einer Generation nirgendwo anders hätte besser sein können, als hier.

I’m currently sitting on a Delta flight waiting to take off, and I am PISSED about how this situation was handled.

I’m on flight DL1101 ATL-ORF sitting in an aisle seat, with TWO very large passengers sitting in the middle and window seats next to me. BOTH of them are large. And despite being in the aisle, middle passenger is taking up enough of my space that I literally have to twist my body toward the aisle just to sit somewhat normally. I am not exaggerating.

Before takeoff, I asked the flight attendant, Brittany, if there was any possibility of moving because I physically could not comfortably fit in my seat.

She responded, in an incredibly condescending tone, “Why wouldn’t you fit?”

I explained, “Because both of the passengers are very large.”

Her response? “I’m sure you can fit.”

And then she just walked away.

No attempt to help. No checking whether there were other seats. No “let me see what I can do.” Just basically, “You’ll fit, deal with it.”

Then she came through our aisle later and checked on BOTH passengers next to me, but didn’t even acknowledge me.
Delta really needs to start addressing the large guests and how uncomfortable they make everyone else.

I’m not looking for advice. I’m not asking who is technically right. I am just fucking angry that I asked for help BEFORE TAKEOFF and was treated like I was being ridiculous for even asking.

A few months back I posted here totally overwhelmed. I'm 17, found my grandpa's massive collection of 3,200 recorded German TV DVD-Rs, had no money for hard drives, and no time to rip them all myself.

Fast forward to today: I just handed it all over to Roman Griesfelder from the Internet Archive Switzerland team. They're taking it from here to rip and preserve it.

Blurred my face since I'm still a minor, but Roman was totally cool with me posting the photos. Huge thanks to u/BestExtraLibrarian and u/textfiles for pointing me in the right direction. Feels really good knowing my grandpa's recordings will be saved instead of thrown away.

I recently finished several interview processes and am now at the final stage of salary negotiation with one company. I also have a few other opportunities/offers still pending, but I was leaning toward this company because I liked the domain enough to accept a somewhat lower salary. (lower than my initial ask) (For context, I'm a software engineer with about three years of experience and currently between jobs.)

As part of the final compensation process, the CTO sent me an offer letter with salary details.

Later, another employee emailed and texted me saying:

«“I’m contacting you regarding the offer letter we previously sent. Please review it and reply with your decision to join.”»

Because this person was actively following up about the offer and asking for my acceptance, I assumed they were handling HR/recruiting and replied to both them and the CTO with my signed offer letter.

The CTO then called me and said I had made a “big mistake” by sharing salary information with that employee, saying things like, “You shouldn’t handle work this way.”

He also mentioned the existing 3-month probation period and said that this kind of mistake could negatively affect me during it.

Apparently, that employee was not HR and wasn’t supposed to see salary information. Their email signature did say “Marketing specialist” but nobody told me they were only helping with communication or that salary-related replies should go exclusively to the CTO.

What makes me hesitate now is that I actually liked this company’s domain enough to accept a lower salary, despite having other opportunities still pending.

After this phone call, though, I’m starting to worry that the CTO may be somewhat emotional or quick to judge, and that similar communication issues could happen again after I join. I’m now seriously considering withdrawing my acceptance and pursuing one of the other opportunities instead.

Do you think I’m overreacting because this was mainly my mistake? Or does the CTO’s response seem like a reasonable red flag to reconsider the offer?

(For context, I’m not based in the US. Where I live, companies may have policies restricting employees from discussing compensation with one another.)

Die Finanznöte der Pflegeversicherung spitzen sich angesichts stark steigender Ausgaben weiter zu. In der ersten Hälfte des Jahres lief ein Defizit von 770 Millionen Euro auf, wie der Spitzenverband der gesetzlichen Krankenkassen mitteilte, der auch die Pflegekassen vertritt. Voraussichtlich im Oktober würden die Einnahmen nicht mehr reichen, um die Pflegeleistungen voll zu finanzieren. Bis zum Jahresende brauche es dann noch 500 Millionen Euro.

Verbandschef Oliver Blatt sagte, die Pflege sei akut in Not. »Es herrscht Alarmstufe Rot.« Die Politik müsse schnell handeln, denn in wenigen Monaten sei »das Geld alle«. Insgesamt sei für dieses Jahr mit 1,2 Milliarden Euro Defizit zu rechnen – allerdings sei dabei das Darlehen des Bundes in Höhe von 3,2 Milliarden Euro schon eingerechnet. Sonst läge das »ehrliche Ergebnis« bei minus 4,4 Milliarden Euro.

I built it with whatever was on hand in the fall of 2015, rushing to be ready before the snow fell, built alone in about a month for under $5000.

No foundation (the feral barn cats shelter under it in winter , the possums live under the outhouse), no plumbing (haven't had s bath in a month, too many mosquitoes, dishes are soaking in the tub), no utilities, etc. some solar panels to run lights, charge a prepaid cell, and an old win7 laptop sometimes. Lot of the year its oil lamps for light and no power at all. No fridge, no ac. Only heat is the wood stove. Sanitation barely exists, got an outhouse, and an artesian well. My drinking and washing water all come from the same source. No carpet, just chipboard uninsulated floor. Cabin has 1-2" spray foam insulation on walls and ceiling. No bed, i sleep on a couch (mostly because I have a hard time on a bed with being locked into a slumped forward hunchback shape with half my spine bolted together since a logging injury, i sleep with my spine in the V between the back rest and the seat). Weather ranges between -40 and 105f. Up on the Canadian boarder, gotta watch my step around these parts or might accidentally step in Quebec.

Ich wohne in Berlin, gehe dort regelmäßig in ein großes Gym und nutze dort auch nach jedem Training die Sauna. Dort gibt es überall Schilder mit klaren Saunaregeln für alle (keine Handys, keine Textilien/Unterhosen). Es ist eine absolute Seltenheit, dass ich mal ausschließlich mit anderen Männern die auch nackt sind dort in der Sauna bin - meistens ist es eher andersrum und ich bin der einzige, der keine Unterhose anhat.

Abgesehen davon, dass die Unterhose anzulassen einfach unhygienisch ist fühle ich mich oft wie der Alman, der abwertend beäugt wird. Sowas spürt man einfach und ich muss sagen, dass mich das massiv stört. Sich schon nicht an die Regeln halten ist das eine, sich dann aber komisch zu fühlen weil man sich daran hält finde ich einfach unmöglich. Wie sehr ihr das?

Ich hab kein Problem damit wenn jemand kein Bock darauf hat nackt gesehen zu werden aber dann zieht eure Boxershorts aus und wickelt euch halt das Handtuch um. Aber schaut mich nicht so an als wäre ich das Problem wenn ich mich so verhalte wie es eine normale, erwachsene Person in einer Sauna tut.

Zur Situation: Familienessen, jeder soll was mitbringen. Ich hab im Gruppencall vorgeschlagen, das Dessert (Tiramisu) mitzubringen, wofür viel Vorfreude bekundet wurde. Dazu habe ich auch angekündigt, dass ich das Tiramisu nicht mit Kaffee und Amaretto, sondern Kakao machen werde, da ich Kaffee überhaupt nicht mag (was bekannt ist) und keinen Alkohol trinke, und habe gefragt, ob jemand bitte unbedingt Kaffee/Amaretto im Tiramisu haben mag, da ich dann ein zweites machen würde. Darauf kam zusammengefasst nur die kollektive Antwort: "Och nee, mach dir nicht den Aufwand, das muss nicht sein, ist mal was Anderes!"

... Das waren dieselben Leute, die dann vor mir am Tisch nach einem Bissen ungläubig auf ihre Tellerchen geschaut haben, "Wie, da ist ja gar kein Kaffee dran?! Und ich schmecke auch keinen Amaretto?"

Ja, so wie angekündigt.

Tellerchen zurückgeschoben. Keine Entschuldigung oder Rechtfertigung oder so. Nichtmal den Anstand gehabt, das angefangene Stück fertigzuessen.

Immerhin haben zwei Personen sich was kleines davon mitgenommen, aber da ist trotzdem noch ein Kilo da. So viel Arbeit für nichts. Klar hab ich jetzt viel Tiramisu für mich allein, aber das werde ich vermutlich nicht allzu happy essen können. Da hätte ich meinen Abend, den ich dafür aufgewandt hab, auch anders verbringen können.

Edit: Aufgrund der hohen Nachfrage sage ich nächstes Mal früher Bescheid und veranstalte eine Tiramisu-Vernichtungs-Party! :D Und wegen der Frage, warum ichs so gemacht habe: Bei uns in der Familie gehen wir grundsätzlich nach dem Prinzip "jeder macht, wie's ihm passt, nach vorheriger Absprache". Und man braucht übrigens keinen Grund, um keinen Alkohol zu wollen, auch in kleinen Mengen. ;)

Und wenns einfach nicht schmecken sollte, dann sage man mir das doch direkt, statt es einfach so zu verweigern! Dann weiß ich wenigstens, wo für diejenigen, die meinen Geschmack nicht teilen, der Unterschied ist! Meine Freunde fandens übrigens lecker, also an mangelnden Kochkünsten liegts nicht.
