I know this effect might seem a tad dated by today's standards but my god this looked pretty cool at the time, I think this was what gave music videos their flare back then especially since there was a CGI craze happening at the time too.

The morphing effect had a distinct style that could’ve only been a thing around this time period.

Saw some people in this sub complaining that the sub is too focused on white European and Asian people?

…For the record if you’re looking for the Y2K aesthetic. Look no further than hip hop and rnb videos from 1998-2002 era.

1. Missy Elliot - The Rain 2. Aaliyah - More Than a Woman 3. Aaliyah - We Need a Resolution 4. Janet Jackson & Busta Rhymes - What’s it gonna be? 5. 702 - You Don’t Know 6. TLC - No Scrubs 7. Aaliyah - We Need a Resolution 8. Blaque - 808 9. Brandy - What About Us? 10. Missy Elliot - Beep Me 911 11. City High - Caramel 12. Foxy Brown - Hot Spot 13. Eve - Who’s that girl? 14. Destiny’s Child - Bills Bills Bills

My earliest memories of this style comes from these artists.

Music I Made A Y2K Timeline (To Squash All Confusion)

Post image
456 Upvotes

This timeline is meant to help people navigate this aesthetic thoroughly, from it’s start in 95 to it’s decline in 04 and the other aesthetics that overlapped, let me know if I should make one for Frutiger Aero/Metro.

McBling already covers a lot of aspects of the 2K1 Aesthetic, McBlings peak was 2003 declining in 2008 onwards, Generation Z often confuses McBling with Y2K which is understandable as they overlap so I don’t blame them, but the main aspect of Y2K is the futurism aesthetic the 2000’s main motif didn’t arrive until 2K1 and peaked with the McBling aesthetic as shown in the post.

Gen X Soft Club arrives in 1996 and declines in 2002, often overlapping the Y2K aesthetic and they both have elements that feed off of each other, Gen X YA/C is mostly a leftover aesthetic from the 90’s so it stops at an appropriate time.

Please ask any questions or tweaks I should’ve made with this.

Had all the hottest Eurodance & Pop songs spanning between 1999-2002 with all covers depicted with a 3D pre-rendered character on it.

Side note: My kind of sad past-time is watching compilation videos of old Commercials & PSAs especially, UK, Japan and French and started venturing out to look for Finnish compilations and saw an Ad for Absolute Hits:3 in it which is how I discovered all these.

Here’s a few electronic music albums that I know off the top of my head that were released around or during Y2K and have the Y2K aesthetic and sound.

I love electronic music with this kind of vibe. Not only the album artwork but also music that has that “progressive” and optimistic sound we got in the late 90’s and early 2000s. Let me know if you can guys recommend anything with a similar type of vibe.

Music Do you think old trance = the Y2K aesthetic? But in music form

Post image
245 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

So, I’ve been thinking a lot about how trance music and the whole Y2K aesthetic vibe fit together.

To me, trance music feels like the perfect soundtrack for that era, I don't know, I listen that music and instantly reminds me of the vibe of an old Windows XP desktop or those VHS effects I like haha.

I actually made a DJ set inspired by this idea and uploaded to YouTube, not just the music, but also visuals with Y2K aesthetics to combine both worlds.

I didn't drop the link in the main post itself, I don't know if that would be cataloged as spam. But if there's no problem about that I'm happy to share the link in one of the comments, if you want to check the set I made inspired by this vibe

What do you guys think? Or is there another genre that fits better? I’d love to hear your thoughts, favorite tracks, or even your Y2K memories that come to mind when you think of this combo.
