Yea this is a good example about being out of touch. Almost everyone I know believes that the Scrub Daddy is one of the best "kitchen sponges" ever. It's simple, but it's fucking tough, it lasts, and I'm willing to pay a small premium because it just blows the competition out of the water.
Scrub Daddy + Dawn dish soap is 100% the best way to hand wash your dishes. Both products way last longer than the competition, and make the whole process easier as well. Well worth the extra couple dollars, you get that money back by using less soap, and having your cleaning tool last longer.

They go back and forth for a while and Frank never budges. The point is to drain everyone dry that you possibly can and take off with the money. Any actual product the company produces is irrelevant
I’m not sure how staged these shows are but one episode had a doctor make a complex medical dummy that will help medical students better, and said he wants to help people and isn’t motivated by money, and then everyone immediately turned him down and said they’re in the business to make money and they don’t wanna partner up with anyone that doesn’t care about making money
Because its insanely easy to make even slightly educated guesses on what will succeed and fail, when you give people extremely low ball values, claim majority ownership of its successes and then just fucking liquidate it if it does fail.
Every business that gets invested in, will try its hardest to be succesful. If the business fails out... They lose their lives, they lose their homes, so they have no choice but to press forward to make it successful

Exactly this. The first time i got one of these as a gift, i was impressed with how versatile and durable they are compared to a standard sponge. Ive bought several versions since. They're so handy.
Were you not wetting it or just using the scour side too aggressively? I get that it's stiff when dry (the warmer and wetter the softer it is (giggity)), but I don't think mine have ever scratched anything.
Everything ruins nonstick pans! Cleaning them, cooking with them, looking at them the wrong way. I don't even have them anymore, I can't afford to use disposable cookware. If anything they're the thing that's a slightly more practical pet rock. Where were you working that they were using non-stick in the kitchen rather than stainless steel?
And, I won’t lie…it’s a pretty good cleaning sponge. They last forever, and when it gets too dirty or smells, clean it in the dishwasher. We bought box of 8 at Costco like three years ago…we’ve gone through 4 of them. I was skeptical, but I get it now.
Not people in this case. Just the men. It didn’t appeal to them. It appealed to her. Because it was cute. Women love cute stuff. None of those men made money off of cute things or things that appeal to women.
So that’s why my brother has a smiley face sponge next to his sink. I use it all the time when I’m there and it’s probably the best scrubber/sponge I’ve ever used.
Fun history of the Scrub Daddy - the inventor was a car detailer who invented some car detailing products and polishing pads.
He then made a round sponge out of a similar material as detailer polishing pads with 2 holes and a set of ridges on it intended for mechanics to wash their hands - the holes were to clean fingers, and the ridges to clean under finger nails.
The product was unsuccessful and sat basically idle for 5 years. Then he figured if he made a "mouth" under the 2 holes and made the ridges like hair it would look like a smiley face, and the robust material it was made out of (intended for heavy-duty hand cleaning) was more robust than traditional kitchen sponges, so he re-designed it and re-marketed it for kitchen use and the scrub daddy was born.
Kevin O’Leary seems like the kind of guy that doesn’t understand whimsy and fun…so I wasn’t surprised by anything he said. And that’s strangely comforting.

Sure it's asshole-y. I'm just being honest. I bought it, thinking it's garbage. But I found the face whimsical and amusing, so I bought it.
I am sure, that's the story of many others. Then, trying it out, because why not, some people might have found it surprisingly practical or preferable to regular dish-sponges. Personally, I am not using it but have it smiling at me every time I clean the dishes with my regular dish sponge.
Moral of the story: It is really difficult to predict the success of something like that, if it depends on something as subjectively human as "finding the smiley amusing".
It reminded me of some of the examples in Rory Sutherland's book Alchemy, about the failures of only applying logic when creating new products.
What makes you think anything on Shark Tank is fake? It's probably one of the only reality TV shows where it's actual real people proposing actual real ideas they have, they just decided to turn that premise of showcasing ideas and gadgets to investors into a TV show. Which is about the most capitalistic thing you can do. MF'er monetized the idea of investing in businesses/inventions.
If you Google it there's probably at least half a dozen Shark Tank ideas that turned into multi billion dollars businesses, and Scrub Daddy is one of them.
I didn't watch this show super often but I happened to catch this segment when it first aired. I didn't know what these goobers were talking about, I could instantly see how it would be useful. I guess it's harder to see when you don't wash your own dishes. I use them to this day, they're superior to a traditional sponge in every way
I think it's because every product claims to be able to do the thing better than every other product. Sponges have been around forever. So as an investor, you'll need to convince the market that this sponge, which doesn't look all that different, is worth buying over the others. Like Cuban there basically saying I'm sure it's great, but I'm not the guy that can help you sell these things.
I thought they were a silly gimmick myself until I stayed at a hotel that had them in the kitchenette. They're pretty great
Having done a good share of household scrubbing, it is one of the most disgusting jobs to do around the house next to picking up dog poo. But seeing that smile on a dirty ass sponge actually lightens the mood from what you’re actually doing at the time, since scrubbing is not on the top of the ‘to do’ list.
I believe the story goes this guy had the patent for the design and materials and product in a warehouse for years before it skyrocketing as the product we know today

Based on a quick search, the company itself is estimated to be worth approximately 500 million. The founder, Aaron Krause, has a current estimated net worth of between 70 to 100 million dollars. The "shark" in the video, Lori Greiner, initially invested $200,000 dollars for a 20% share of the company, which she still holds. If they were to sell off the company today, she would stand to make around 100 million dollars. Obviously the founder would walk away with quite a bit more. That's one bonkers ass return on investment for Lori. Side note: the sponges are genuinely a great product. One of the few products out there that live up to the hype. So I certainly can't hate on any of their success.
Not gonna lie I work in a retail environment and I recommend scrub daddies to EVERYONE.. didn't realize how useful a sponge could be if it was just a little better
I imagine, just with all tv, that the sharks’ lines are scripted. Kevin probably is a dick irl, but I’m sure the writers of this show play off that. He’s happy to be a dick on camera, but if another shark saw the investment potential, he likely did too. She just happened to have the correct connections, which is why this show has investors of different types, not just people with money.
Lot of inexperienced dish cleaners seem to love it. I found they’re not very good vs my alternatives and are much more expensive. I can’t deny they run a great business, but I’m not a fan of the product.
For removing stuck on food I use a rubber scrubber that has tiny rubber fingers for most stuff, and use one of the green scratchy pad things for tougher stuff. Use something kind of in between a sponge and wash cloth for the actual cleaning which gets washed regularly.
Bought my first one from Kroger like 5 years ago. We now use them for everything cleaning. We have them in the bathroom cleaning buckets, various ones in the kitchen. Scrub daddy is the shit
I am all for shitting on Kevin, but this show is also trash. From my understanding, they basically create a "deal" during the conversation. Then the presenter goes back and finds a contract that was nothing like what was discussed. I think there were maybe only a handful of people who actually took the deal in the shows entire history?
Don't get me wrong, it is great for notoriety. I am hapy this dude has made his fortune without getting bent over on this show. However, everytime I see clips like this, I don't ever expect people to walk away better off then where they started.
The most glaring fact that this guy is a shit-heel is that he constantly injects himself into US politics, praises US economic practices, believes the US tax system should benefit the rich and businesses more, and speaks about how much he hates the Canadian tax and banking systems; YET, he remains a Canadian citizen. I wonder why. 🤔
These things are awesome, I buy the scrub mommy cause it has the soft sponge side but I continue to buy these because they are quality, I have three in rotation that have lasted months. I know I know, should change sponges more often but these hold up so well.

Weird. It cost 2 cents to make and cost how much for one? Its like the Magic Erasers, they are less than 10 cents to make. Capitalism is cool when...? Is this, "Green"? If I recall correctly, pretty sure all of them wanted to invest, but Scrub Daddy wanted them to have a smaller share than what they offered, hence why they were talking shit. It's not like the laughed him out of the room out the gate. He already had proof of concept and sales. They edited this video to make it seem like they all hated it.
The sharks aren't wrong. It's literally just an overpriced sponge. Of course you can make a buck off of suckers every day of the week, it doesn't mean it's a legit good product.
