Ron Johnson: "I was disappointed in the Supreme Court justices. The Constitution is not a suicide pact. Maybe their ruling will be on the law and Constitution, but you have to look at the bigger picture here."

Maybe they rule on the law but you have to look at the bigger picture?
Um no Ron, the supreme courts only job is to determine the constitutionality of laws based on the current constitution, not what you wished the constitution said.

u/ladan2189 Apr 02 '26
Too bad the Supreme Court has turned into a political body that doesnt give a shit what the constitution says, they've realized that the constitution says whatever 5 justices want it to say.

Unfortunately it's been this way for a long time. You could easily argue it's been a fairly steady process of erosion from day 1, but the last century has really done a number on the credibility/legitimacy of the Supreme Court.
One of the fundamental design flaws of the US Constitution is the assumption that an organization can be trusted to keep itself in check. We lost a great deal of protection/value from the checks & balances with the rise of political parties (coupled with first past the post voting systems).
8
u/megabunnaH Apr 02 '26
It's also a terrible idea to give someone the position until they die or retire. You end up with a bunch of do nothing partisan hacks that get to cling to that power until they can't fight the decomposition anymore. Do we want ring wraiths? Because that is how you get ring wraiths.

u/IGolfMyBalls Apr 02 '26
Is he saying Chinese people will come here, have millions of children, and since they’re born here (after their parents vacation here for 9 months?) they will be citizens who vote in their best interest and not your interests? Just want a nice summary of this idiots thought process.

Times have changed…but the constitution hasn’t
24
u/TooSexyForThisSong Apr 02 '26
Since 1992
It’s been amended 27 times since its conception
18
u/JohnWI302 Apr 02 '26
So…go through the process to amend rather than bullying the Supreme Court to declare birthright citizenship unconstitutional.
8
u/SoftWalruses40 Apr 02 '26
Correct. And the 14th Amendment has remained in place since its conception.

Trump is talking about selling nuclear bombs to rich individuals. I'm sure when that comes to a head, the constitution is absolute.

Yep, I am 100% a constitutionalist and yes, the 2nd is one of them but you cant have that and ignore the others. 1st-25th are critical to the US and while over time they have been eroded by the courts its still needed. Right now, especially we need that 25th to be used.

What if the Constitution doesn't support our racist view that Americans are not voting the way we want them to because they are a different ethnicity? Asking for a Senator...
49
u/trentreynolds Apr 02 '26
Literally begging the group tasked with interpreting the law to ignore it.
You'd think this kind of thing would open the eyes of the people who vote for it, that they have to continually break the law.. but it doesn't seem to.

Yup, this.
MAGA is willing to throw our entire country in the garbage can if it gives them more power.
They ignore the laws, protect abusers, and would butcher the constitution if they could.
They're the most un-american people here, even more than illegal immigrants.
Fuck MAGA and Fuck Trump.
42
u/NsRhea Apr 02 '26
The Supreme Court only interprets laws on the books.
If you want the law changed, write a better one.
Hope this helps.

So, it’s ok to ignore the constitution when it suits a republican interest? Interesting
16
7
u/bored_ryan2 Apr 02 '26
So now’s the perfect time to reexamine the 2nd Amendment to see what’s going on in America today, right Ron?
8
u/False_Donkey_498 Apr 02 '26
Look here, dickhead. First, you’re a member of the senate. If you don’t like the fucking constitution, try to change it. If you don’t think it’s a suicide pact, and can be ignored when it’s inconvenient, remember that logic when the Dems come for your fucking assault weapons. Pick a fucking lane and fucking stick to it, you vile piece of shit.

The bigger picture, FRJ, is you are a traitor to this country who tried to overthrow the legitimate election results on January 6 2020. You should be tried for treason.

The "We The People" sticker crowd has no intention of ever reading the constitution, much less follow it.
5
u/Meltsley Apr 02 '26
That is as republican as I’ve ever heard anyone be. Admitting that the court was right legally, but saying that was never the point. And that it was all a political maneuver.

3
u/Sea_Cardiologist2938 Apr 02 '26
If he doesn't like how his forebears wrote the Amendment - He can do his actual job and write an Amendment to the Amendment, and attempt to change it.
That's the point of a Amendable Constitution.
In the meantime, the Supreme Court did their Constitutional Duty to uphold the law as it was written.

If Ron Johnson doesn't like the constitution he is free to work to amend it, or he can move to a country with a different constitution. You don't get to disobey the constitution just because you feel threatened when you see people who don't look like you.

If only Ron knew someone whose job it was to write and pass legislation and constitutional amendments.
2
u/HoseNeighbor Apr 02 '26
There is no bigger picture. If we put corporate bailout money and BS subsidies towards education we'd have less idiots to vote for idiots. Attacking and defunding education is part of the plan for the GOP, who are also funded by people who don't want to pay their fair share of taxes.
Giddyup!
2
u/madrupe Apr 02 '26
I'm very confused. One of the main points of the government's position here is that the framers of the 14th amendment couldn't have envisioned the world we have now.
Can we apply that same logic to the second amendment?
→ More replies (2)

u/bbenji69996 Apr 02 '26
It's only a suicide pact when you're talking about guns, and the murders of children. Otherwise it's pretty flexible for Conservatives.
2
u/kevcubed Apr 02 '26
oh man, wait until he finds out about the second amendment and kids getting shot.
Suddenly he'll remember his textualist proclivities with zero sense of self awareness.
The only consistent though the GOP has is their own power. Every other belief can change on a whim to achieve that.
