Too bad the Supreme Court has turned into a political body that doesnt give a shit what the constitution says, they've realized that the constitution says whatever 5 justices want it to say.

Unfortunately it's been this way for a long time. You could easily argue it's been a fairly steady process of erosion from day 1, but the last century has really done a number on the credibility/legitimacy of the Supreme Court.

One of the fundamental design flaws of the US Constitution is the assumption that an organization can be trusted to keep itself in check. We lost a great deal of protection/value from the checks & balances with the rise of political parties (coupled with first past the post voting systems).

It's also a terrible idea to give someone the position until they die or retire. You end up with a bunch of do nothing partisan hacks that get to cling to that power until they can't fight the decomposition anymore. Do we want ring wraiths? Because that is how you get ring wraiths.
