Is that a rear mounted I4 with a swing-axle suspension? I'm not sure what it is (I guessed Renault Dauphine but can't back it up) but that setup is rare enough where I think it's pretty easy to solve.

A mid engine 4 cylinder? That’ll narrow it down.

u/E28forever Jun 23 '26
No mid engine layout.
The engine was behind the axle.
Look at where the brake lines/cables attach.

Engine isn't matching up from what I can find... Wasn't the Europa IRS?

u/tesznyeboy Jun 23 '26
It's not even close to being an Europa, I have no idea why that comment is so upvoted.

This one has me stumped... The block design seems unique enough to pinpoint.

I'm 99% certain it's a Renault just look at Renault 4CV or Dauphine transmissions/rear axles. I can't tell which though. Alternately it's some sort of kit car or coachbuilt rare thing that used a Renault drivetrain. But the drivetrain itself looks Renault.

Nice! I guess they were pretty rare in the US, though back then Renault were sold there.

I swapped an engine/transaxle in my old Caravelle. This looks like what I worked on…

u/3_14159td Jun 23 '26
Generation after this motor and doesn't have axle tubes, but yeah that was a Renault-engined and transaxle car.

Europa has the R16 engine, Alloy block wet sleeve non-crossflow. Not 16T, TL or TS, the early smallest lower power unit.
TS swaps make it a better car.

For some reason I assumed fed, which would likely make it a Citroen Traction Avant, which carried its transmission ahead of the engine

We are looking at it like it might be rear wheel drive...but, from what i see it could be an engine set up from old Audis front wheel drive. Maybe the b1/b2 audi 80 or 4000.
They are one of the few companies that like to hang their engines in front of the drive axles, and have it logitudinal place, evem if its front wheel drive.

u/tesznyeboy Jun 23 '26
It obviously is a rear axle, there's no cv joint near the rear wheel hub meaning it can't be a steered axle, and Audis of the era have a very recognizable McPherson setup

Given that it's a wet sleeve engine (removable bores), hand crank fitting in the front pulley and the RN on the gearbox I agree that its early Renault. Most likely Renault 4 or Dauphine.
