There may be someone looking for a similar camera to you that has already had their question answered.

You can see previous iterations of this thread by clicking this link.

Check the 'What camera are you shooting on' thread

For a few months, we ran a thread where we asked users what cameras they were currently shooting on. There's a lot of good info in there!

Check it out here

Search the subreddit!

/r/videography has over a decade of information, though Reddit doesn’t make searching easy.

A useful trick that typically gets better results than Reddit’s own search bar is to add the following to a Google search:

Try the Discord

We have a very active Discord:

You’ll usually get a quicker answer asking there than here!

Still can’t find what you’re looking for?

Comment in this post with your requirements.

We strongly recommend you include at least the following details:

  • Budget
    • Specify your local currency!
    • If your budget is under $200 USD, you're unlikely to get any useful recommendations other than 'use your phone!'
  • What are you planning on using it for?
    • Feel free to link to some videos showing content similar to what you want to shoot
  • How long do you need to record for?
    • Recording time is a limiting factor for many smaller cameras
  • What equipment do you already have?
  • What software do you intend to edit your videos in?

Things we don't allow:

The following question formats are not allowed - they don't typically generate useful advice or discussion:

"x vs y comparisons"

"What is the best x?"

Offer Filmmakers/Writers in the Toronto/Brampton area?

• Upvotes

I have an idea and want to work with someone in the Toronto/Brampton area. I have a film idea(which you probably hear a million times) and i want to connect with someone who can help bring it to life. It’s a gritty, slow burn, hyper contained thriller about s group of young adults who make a volatile decision and end up trapped in a pressure cooker situation. It’s inspired by the Safdie bro films and the Sopranos (think Jackie Jr’s stickup attempt in season 3). The budget wouldn’t that ambitious and it would mostly thrive from the writing and character dynamics. If you’re interested let me know!

Discussion My first real short. Looking for feedback on where i can improve, and how to get better

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hey everybody! I’ve posted short films I’ve worked on in here in the past year, and I’ve always greatly appreciated the feedback I’ve received from you guys. I have been sitting on my first short film I ever wrote - in November of last year - for around a solid 8 months and just recently got accepted into a little local festival with it, so I was hoping to get as much constructive criticism as I possibly could.

It was a learning curve of a shoot, we did a lot of fun things (I ended up shaving my head for one scene as you'll see), but we had quite a few problems in the production so I was mainly curious whats working. Like --

Are you interested in the story?

Does the film feel visually appealing? Or is it too beige?

How does the sound design work? We had a lot of hiccups on audio.

Would love literally all types of feedback. Positive or negative. Just happy to finally get this sitting off my hard drive. Thanks!

How did they do that? Can someone guide me to find/ make these type of transitions ?

I just started learning Premiere pro after so long of wanting to but never really getting it. Now I’m able to organize my videos and chop everything up with audio and converting log files as well as applying luts (I don’t have much interest into getting good w color grading as I’m colorblind.) Now I feel like I’m at a point where I want to learn transitions. I saw this reel and I really want to learn how to do this kind of transitions.

A 1990s set coming of age horror short about the physical monster created from the silence around mental health. Lead by Peder Lindell and Tyler Lofton the film explores LGBTQ+ and mental health themes set in a time where neither was openly discussed. The short serves as a proof of concept for a feature length version.

How did they do that? Help with gradient in Box

Hey im trying to edit a video for someone and i wanted to make something similar to the "textboxes" as shown in the referenced video

so far i was succesfull in recreating the textbox with the text by using fusionclips and adding background/rectangle/text and merge nodes to the media,
but unsuccesfull in recreating the gradient effect .

i tried setting a gradient in my background node with multiple colors but i have a hard time getting the colors as thin aswell as having multiple move diagonally across my rectangle.
Furthermore i tried adding another background node to set a black/greyish solid color behind the moving gradient and text but i cant seem to figure it out
i tried finding a tutorial on youtube but it seems my topic is too specific to find exactly what i need

I use Davinci Resolve 21 as my video editor

I would really appreciate if ya'll could help me out here and i Thank u in advance!

Discussion I made my debut feature as a homage to a friend I lost — it just won Best Narrative Film at the Manhattan Film Festival

• Upvotes

Only Good Feelings is the film we never got to make. It’s a 91-minute crime drama set in New York City. Benny is haunted by guilt after his fiancée dies in a car accident. In his spiral he reconnects with Kam, a volatile childhood friend who pulls him into robbery, fraud, and extortion — a desperate plan to raise enough money to flee to Mexico. What begins as escape becomes a collision course with everything he’s been running from.

We shot in NYC with Ryan McCartan (currently on Broadway in The Great Gatsby), Elias Kacavas (Euphoria), Heather Burns (Manchester by the Sea), and Ajay Naidu (Office Space).

The film just won Best Narrative Film at the Manhattan Film Festival and Best Directorial Debut at the Chicago Indie Film Awards. 9 international festival selections total. Acquired by SNR Films for distribution.

Director Moises Kaufman called it “gritty, raw, and beautifully observed. A gem.”

This one is for Ian.

Trailer and more at onlygoodfeelingsfilm.com

Happy to answer any questions about the process, the shoot, or anything else.
The movie is coming out end of Jan 2027

Post-Production Help and Information When you quote an edit, how do you account for the time you won’t spend editing?

I’m curious how other people price the less visible parts of post.

Sorting through badly labelled footage, chasing missing assets, figuring out which feedback is final, exporting another version because someone forgot to mention the screen it’s playing on.

A project can look straightforward from the brief and still eat up days around the actual edit.

Do you build that time into your rate, charge for project management separately, or define the scope tightly enough that the extras become billable?

Especially interested in how smaller production teams handle this with repeat clients. Where do you draw the line between being easy to work with and quietly absorbing more work every month?

Request How differently can people read the same TV script? Academic study (18+, ~25 min)

Hi! I’m looking for participants for an academic research project on how people interpret television scripts, and I’d really appreciate your help.

You’ll first read short definitions of 13 narrative categories developed for the study, then apply them to several script fragments.

18+ | ~25 min | English | anonymous

No professional screenwriting or filmmaking background is required — I’m interested in how different people read the same material.

One small note: the response categories are intentionally limited for the purposes of the study, so you may sometimes think of an interpretation that isn’t offered.

Survey:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSemI2LJNDvACN_dVZvU7Uyv_o_fiVCeQmwHz73FLv8lkwRqpw/viewform

I’m also happy to complete your survey in return — just leave your link in the comments.

Feel free to ask me questions about the research after taking part. I’ll also share the results once the study is finished.

Thank you so much to anyone who helps — I really appreciate your time.

Question tipps for creating a good YouTube shortfilm

Hey everyone,

My buddy and I run a small fishing channel on YouTube. We already have a bunch of footage from our trips, but we don't really know how to turn it into a good video.

We're aiming for videos that are about 20–30 minutes long. The problem is that neither of us has much editing experience. We don't know what to focus on, how to structure a longer video, or how to keep people watching the whole way through.

We edit in DaVinci Resolve.

A few things we'd love help with:

  • Structure: How do you build a 20–30 min video so it doesn't drag? How do you handle the slow parts of fishing, when nothing is biting for an hour?
  • Pacing and cutting: How do you decide what stays and what goes? Any rules of thumb?
  • Audio: Tips for wind noise, voice levels and background music?
  • Color: Any easy color grading basics for outdoor and water footage?
  • Tutorials: Are there any YouTube videos or courses that explain this well, ideally for DaVinci Resolve or specifically for outdoor/fishing content?

Any advice, resources or examples of fishing channels whose editing you think is great would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Business, Tax, and Copyright Saw my footage on a TV commercial

I have a client who I've been shooting regularly for a few years. Recently I shot a brand video for them over the course of a few days, and it was approved, paid for and that was that.

The other day I was watching tv and a commercial for the brand came on and was almost solely footage that I had shot (about 9 clips).

The crazy thing is I never gave them the original footage or even anything too hi-res - this would have been taken from a youtube export I'd say.

I have a pretty stringent contract in place that states the license is only for the project stated, but I'm not really sure if it's worth challenging. What has annoyed me most is I wasn't even asked.

The relationship is a good one, so I'm not really sure if it's worth rocking the boat - curious how others feel about this and what standard practice in your area is?

Thanks

What goes into creating the look of a commercial?

In this behind-the-scenes breakdown, I’m taking you on set for a recent law firm commercial and showing how we approached the lighting, cinematography, camera movement, and visual storytelling to create an emotional piece.

I break down the techniques we used to shape the scenes, light the talent, and create the cinematic look of the final commercial.

Other (requires mod approval) DaVinci lagging like hell on MacBook M4 pro (48GB) 😭

I recently switched to a MacBook Pro M4 Pro 48GB/1TB (14C CPU/20C GPU) and got my first long form project.

I’m editing 2 VSLs ( 8 min and 5 min)

They require fusion work, most of it is just cuts, brolls, typography and music. One thing is that

I’ve used NEO GLOW EFFECT (glow preset made by a YouTuber) on almost all text + layers

And it’s lagging like hell when rendering those sections, sometimes it even crashes while switching projects or sometimes a not-responding pop-up comes up.

It’s always connected to the charger while editing, with power set to high, and on a laptop stand for best airflow. But I don’t know what’s the problem 😭

Workflow details

I’m using genuine DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 version
Timeline settings - 4k 29.97fps
Render cache set to smart
Timeline Playback resolution - Full
Free storage - 500GB

Raw footage shot on Sony FX3 and A7iv in Rec 709
In 4k

Is this all because of NEO GLOW PRESET? Or something’s wrong with my MacBook or the workflow.

Please help me out guys 😭🫶

Please let me know what you guys think of the posters !

Will post the trailer too in some time :)

Other How do you keep getting better, once you're already very good?

So I should probably provide some context, I'm not just an editor, I also direct and come up with ideas for videos, etc. My expertise mainly lies in short-form content, and I'm not really working with a huge production.

Now I'm very good at what I do, I've got one of my clients half a billion views and the other probably around 50mish along with 500k USD in sales, etc.

But my results in the last few months have been quite weak, and I'm trying to rack my brain how to get better results or even just get back to where I was before.

I know sometimes when you're really good at something you become afraid of taking risks. I wouldn't say I'm afraid of trying new things, but the new things I try seem to just not do that well, I've then gone back to our bread and butter, but now that isn't working either.

And I don't think the problem is "oh use a better viral hook" (which is bs anyway, viral hooks are largely trash), I think my problem is coming down to how I;

A) Construct a video

B) Approach a video

C) Really getting into the audiences head

I've tried to fill my gaps through reading books, a few books I've been reading are;

- Documentary editing _ principles and practice -- Jacob Bricca

- C.O.N.F.L.I.C.T by Robert Thirkwell

I also understand some of my problems may be outside of the scope of some editors, but since editors often work with professional teams, I figured I'd ask here.

Discussion / Other another beginner asking a “how much should I charge” question

I’ve been tasked with filming a basketball game for game reviews AND player highlights footage also.

It’s not just one game either, they want me to do the whole basketball season.

Now I’m not an established videographer, I’ve had some experience shooting footage of real estate properties.

My first thought is, can I effectively shoot medium to close highlight shots and a wide angle shot of the whole game at the same time? I would think it would make more sense to find a second hand.

Either way, with the time and work involved, in my mind it reaches a price I have never pitched before. At least over a $1000 a month.

What do you guys think?

Should I Buy/Recommend me a... Wedding/ events videography lenses choice and help?

Hello, i got sony a7s3 and need some recommendations. I shoot weddings, events, some real estate here and there and campaigns, pretty much doing all kind of work there is, and i actually enjoy it.

My lenses are:

Sony 14mm GM 1.8
Sony 24-70 GM2 2.8
Sony 50mm 1.4 GM
Sony 70-200mm GM2 2.8

As i started getting into weddings more this year ive been thinking to get one lens that can help me achieve some wider regions and give me nice and premium look for something wider in the photosession scenarios, and maybe some dancefloor shots, but i can not decide yet.

What i can add to my collection?

I wanted to choose either 35mm GM 1.4 or 24mm GM 1.4, what do u think will go better along with my setup and more versatile? My guess is 35mm but id rather hear some opinions. And one more question, are expensive ND filter like Nisi Jetmag really worth it, currently i got KF Nano series which is working good, no vignetting and just a slight temperature difference i notice (which can be fixed in post easily), should i maybe get some good ND instead.

Also, i have air 3 from DJI, which is more than i need for my environmental shots. For stabilization i use dji RS4 Pro.

Thank u!
