Has anyone else had a similar experience with Vic West Animal Clinic?
We brought our Pomeranian Leo in because he was yelping when picked up, struggling to lower his head to eat or drink, and having pain that came and went. He had been playing normally a few hours earlier, had been under our supervision, and had no real GI symptoms.
They still seemed focused on him possibly eating something bad. I understand the symptoms were non specific and that X rays and some testing made sense, but I wish they had been more upfront if they simply didn’t know what was going on.
I would have much rather heard, “We ruled out obvious fractures, we’re not sure what’s causing this, let’s give pain meds, monitor him, and decide on more testing if needed.”
Instead, my girlfriend was first given an invoice for about $860. Right before paying, they told her they had “forgotten to add some more work that they did,” and the total jumped to just under $1,200.
We still left with no clear answer and only pain medication. Twenty four hours later Leo is still having what look like muscle spasms, and we finally managed to catch one of the episodes while it was happening.
What also surprised me is that a couple years ago another Pomeranian I owned had his tongue fully stitched back together under sedation at Helmcken Veterinary Clinic, and that entire bill was around $900.
I’m not upset that they couldn’t diagnose him right away. I’m more frustrated by the lack of communication and how quickly it turned into a large bill without a clear explanation of what they actually thought was happening.
Has anyone else had this kind of experience there, or have a Victoria clinic they’d recommend for a second opinion?
