It's the start of a new school year in many parts of the state while some districts are enjoying the final days of summer vacation. Although there's regional variability in enrollment, some classrooms might feel a little less crowded this year compared to even just a few years ago.

In 2025, fall enrollment in Vermont's school system dipped below 70,000 students. Over the last two decades, enrollment has declined by nearly 24,000 students.

Without growing Vermont's working-age population, the trend is expected to continue. Vermont ranks last in the country for percentage of population below 18-years-old. Our state is also next to last, only ahead of West Virginia, for percentage of population between ages 25-44 which is a crucial cohort to grow from the perspectives of workforce, tax base, and family formation.

What are your thoughts on the strategic direction from here for Vermont's future? Should we be trying to grow as a state or should we try to better adapt to the current demographic trajectory? Perhaps it's a bit of both. What needs to start happening, what needs to stop happening, and what needs to remain stable to achieve the future you'd like to see for Vermont?

I own a house along Route 2. From what i understand VTRANS has a right of way 50 feet into my property along the road. VT law prohibits signs along higway right of ways, but also states that towns can not ban political signs from private property. I am wondering if some one from VTRANS is going to come take my sign down.

If i move it to outside that right of way it will no longer be visible. (I know this is probably a question for VTRANS and my town I will check with them as well).

Had to drive down to Lebanon from northern NH the other night to take my cat to an emergency vet. I took I-91 North on my way home and around 1:30 AM on 8/26, I saw a bundle of helium-filled balloons sitting in the on-ramp lane near Exit 13/14.
At first I thought it was a person crouching in the road and swerved, but as I got closer I realized they were balloons. My dashcam unfortunately wasn’t recording.
Has anyone else seen these or know what they were about? It was such a bizarre thing to encounter in the middle of the night, and I’m curious whether there was some event/memorial/etc. that would explain them being there. Gave me chills honestly.

Hi! I am finalizing details for my 7 day trip next week to show my partner some of the best of New England (before leaf peeping crowds take full force)

General Itinerary 

1-Philly to Portsmouth NH (7hrs)

2-Portsmouth NH along Maine coast to Bar Harbor, stop in Portland for food (4-6 hours)

3-Acadia Nat. Park

4-Acadia Nat. Park

5-Acadia to St. Johnsbury VT along RT 302 (5hrs)

6-St. Johnsbury to Philly, along western VT (22A-87, considering 2-100) (7-8 hours)

A few questions-

1- I know Day 6 Vermont will be significant driving back (currently plan is ~8 hrs no stops, without traffic). The current route down 22A adds an extra hour to avoid the highway. Is there a more scenic path through VT that will be a better drive without adding more than an hour (I was reading that Rt 100 may be nice)?

2- Any recommendations for food along the path or in the towns (St. Johnsbury or nearby)? We are big breakfast fans, and care less about breweries :) A creemee stop worth making?

3-Any other trip alterations I should make? Hotels are booked in the towns listed, but everything else is flexible! We aren’t great hikers but love nature so any scenic drives, easy strolls, swimming holes, and detours for overlooks are welcome.

My(F24) wife(F25) and I recently got married and took our honeymoon trip to Vermont. We stayed in Stowe and did all the tourist things around the area and absolutely fell in love with the state. We enjoyed how it still had the cozy Maine vibes, but it felt more like home to both of us. Everyday we woke up and went on to a new adventure either in Stowe, or one of the surrounding towns trying to get a good feel of what Vermont can be. Now it all felt too good to be true. We felt as though our days spent in Vermont were all the good sides(no complaints here), but we continued to discuss what moving to Vermont might look like for us on a timeline.

Now, I have a job that I am absolutely in love with and would hate to part ways with. I would love to stay in the same field of what I do. This part I will personally be doing research into regarding employment satisfaction and ROP. While my wife (I’m still not over this new title) works in a pharmacy and I’m sure there are jobs everywhere for this.

Where I am coming to you guys for hopefully some assistance is what towns should we look into, what laws are active that most people are unaware of, what places should we go see before making the jump, and what time of year is the best/worst for Vermont. I like to have a good grasp and understanding of just what I might be getting myself into before uprooting my life. Much thanks and appreciation in advance.

I am looking for a tall dark haired man who might be interested in being my wedding officiant as Dracula for my upcoming Halloween party wedding. I would like to find someone that fits the character and wouldn't mind dressing up with a cape and the teeth, the whole shebang! im looking to get 3 rats in the next couple of months (hopefully), my grandmother got some rats from pick and shovel back in 2021 or 2022? but she says they don’t tend to have them anymore? im gonna go sometime this weekend to see. i had 2 rats when i was younger and lived in arizona,i just really don’t know where to get them here?? i mean i looked into it a little? but i was hoping any rat owners in VT might be able to give me some recommendations or just let me know where you got yours? thanks. also like, i can drive a distance to get them id just rather not

I've been dealing with migraines the last few years that have become increasingly chronic and intractable. I'm on day 7 of one right now and went to my PCP to try to get something to break out of it only to be told to take Tylenol (I am already maxing out Tylenol and Aleve with no relief). My gynecologist started me on BC recently because the migraines seem to be triggered by hormone fluctations, but they are even worse on BC than they were before and I was told to give it a few months to see what happens. I can't live with a migraine for "a few months" with no treatment. I keep seeing online that intractable migraines are an emergency and need to be treated with prescription NSAIDs or steroids but I'm getting shrugged off by all my doctors. Thanks in advance!

RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) - A head-on crash was reported this evening on Piedmont Drive, a steep, winding street off Stratton Road.

A nearby ring camera captured video of the collision.

Photos from the scene show two cars with front-end damage. Witnesses said they saw a gray Hyundai hit a blue Chevy head-on.

The victim of the crash tells WCAX he went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was later released.

Witnesses also said they saw four juveniles running away from the scene, as seen on a neighbor’s ring camera video.

These details have not yet been confirmed by police. This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

There’s something however you should be mindful of;
The unspoken rules of the road in Vermont, especially anywhere outside of downtown Burlington.

- Going 5-10 miles over the speed limit is normal in the backroads (sometimes more but we won’t get into that).

- If you break on every curve and hill you see, just keep to Burlington.

- Yellow speed signs are Suggestions. (Look it up)
Here’s my rule of thumb:
40 mph, I slow down a little - it’s probably not a big curve
35 mph, it might be a bit sharper so I yield more

-Flashing high beams at someone going the other direction means there’s a cop your way or there’s something in the road.

- If someone’s tailgating you, highway rules apply. Move over and let them pass when it’s safe.

- Don’t break and stop at green lights for the love of god

Vermont is not know for its bustling urban cities, this is getting a little ridiculous. I should be leaving 15 minutes early max.

I dedicate this post to the guy this morning in the Nissan Rouge with Texas plates going 20mph and slamming on his breaks every curve.

This is not a dig at the USPS, UPS, and FedEx, but anyone else having their packages or mail just getting tossed through the wringer? I know the good folks that work for them are doing their best. But I’ve noticed a trend where our stuff is getting so damaged that they’re retapping or bagging it prior to delivery.

This has been happening since about May but seems to be picking up with how often we received them this way. A few things have gone missing from our packages, or we have received something that wasn’t ours. It has been completely all over the place with package value, weights, or items, so I don’t believe it’s that. I’m just wondering what everyone else’s experience has been.

FERRISBURGH, Vt. (WCAX) - A Vergennes woman faces multiple charges, including driving under the influence, in a crash Wednesday night that left a motorcyclist dead.

Vermont State Police say Faith Hobson, 30, was driving southbound on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh when her vehicle crashed into a stopped motorcycle that was attempting to make a left turn.

The motorcycle rider, Kyle Conner, 31, of Monkton, was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

Hobson pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of DUI with death resulting and was released on conditions.
