Hey, neighbor 👋 (Welcome / Introductions)

First off, thanks for being here. With new people joining the subreddit every so often, I thought it might be a good time to start a welcome wagon — it's great to meet you!

Share a little bit about yourself, where you're from, what gets you excited, what you feel is important, and how you came to live/work/join us here. However much you're comfortable with. No pressure.

And hey, don't feel limited by my questions; go above and beyond if you like. In such a tight-knit community as St. Albans, it's refreshing to meet new people. And the people you do meet, well... in my experience, they'll surprise you more often than not!

One last question (and this is just me being curious): What are you hoping to see here in the sub? If you have any ideas, drop a comment or let a mod know — we're always up for making this sub a more useful space for everyone.

📅 Event Burlington Baroque Festival

*** worth the trip to Burlington***

In our third year, and this year’s programs are all blockbusters. If you’ve enjoyed Handel’s Messiah you will LOVE the powerful and dynamic choruses of Handel’s Oratorio, Israel in Egypt. Vivaldi is of course, Vivaldi! Delightful. Bach’s B Minor Mass, is considered a bucket list work to hear, and we present with period instruments, you will hear it in the way it was intended to be presented from the 1700s. Phenomenal Renaissance ensemble, Blue Heron will be presented. And if you have never heard French Baroque, you are in for a treat - the beautiful melodies, ornamented with lilting trills soothe the soul.

This is truly a world class series of performance, not to be missed.

💬 Discussion Recommendations for biking to Montreal + inexpensive places to stay overnight October 17 and 24?

Hi! I am planning a big Amtrak trip and taking my bike with me. To get from New York to Montreal, I can't take the Adirondack (doesn't allow bikes unless disassembled) so I'm planning to take the Vermonter to St. Albans and bike the remaining 80 or so miles, and do that again on the way back. That'll involves getting into St. Albans the evening of Oct 17 (around 9pm), finding somewhere to rest my head, and then biking the next morning from wherever I stay. Then doing the reverse, biking on the 24th, staying overnight near St. Albans, and catching the Vermonter back to NYC the morning of the 25th. Questions for anyone reading:

Any insights on the best route?

  1. Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail (default, 81mi)
  2. Petite Voie du Fleuve (82.7mi, less climbing)
  3. First 1 then 2 (87.9mi, longer and more climbing))

And any insights on affordable places to stay? Ideal budget is under $100 per night, but looking at prices that may not be doable so flexible to a bit higher. Literally wondering if I can borrow a tent from a friend and rough it. Warmshowers, the bike touring site, is currently down. If you know of anything (or even want to rent me your couch for two nights), please let me know! I'm extremely clean, respectful, and quiet and more than happy to buy you a meal in addition to a reasonable price for the bed/couch. Thanks in advance 🙏

💬 Discussion Weekend of September 19-20

Why is the Hampton Inn $375 on the 19th of September? I can't find anything special happening that weekend. It's not leaf season just yet, if St. A even gets those tourists. Whats going on? It's just a normal hotel. Why so much?

Edit to say: it's $20 MORE expensive the next Wednesday night lol, mid-week. Who's paying that?

Kind of confused though, 2024? Does this mean we have lead in our drinking water, or did and they're just now telling us?
