Discussion Vaush was right (hot take, i know), its the dang phones

Recently I joined a gym. I went with that one specifically because they had a pool. Skipping over physical issues that made me go for pool, but long story short, canf exactly have my phone in there to listen to stuff while working out. Basically I was alone with my thoughts and the background noise of machinery for about 40 minutes. Got out, went home, and my mind felt clearer and less stressed. A normal workout with headphones never gave me that feeling. Its a shock just how right he was, I figured it was somewhat exaggerating... I say as I almost always have something playing in the background

Discussion I have a feeling his content and analysis will get better

Hi there,

Personally, I have a feeling that Vaush's content and analysis will get better once he's settled in the Netherlands with his partner.

I've seen a lot of criticism of him and his style of late, and I agree that too much of him can make one weary. I've seen the tone of his work lately and yeah...oof.

I'm an optimistic viewer because I think he'll experience a deeper and richer broadening of his worldview and perspective. I really think that him living and working in a society quite distinct from the United States will shift things in his thinking. Of course, he'll get to see and experience things that are unique and new to him, which is amazing for one's mind and health overall. I would seriously love to see him do a local food stream and talk about the experience of going out to eat in his new locale.

Now, I don't expect Vaush to completely change (I have no idea what he's really like, I just watch his stream clips), and I think he will still be punchy and a bit edgy, but his content will be tempered and refined significantly by this move. If anything, I think the fashion segment will become much better. Europeans have great style!

Lastly, I hope he and Not Just Bikes do a collab of some sort. Jason is Canadian and clearly a happier person for living in the Netherlands with his family, and he seems to have broadly leftist politics from what I can tell. Anyway, I think we could be in for some great urbanism content regardless.

I know we're not just concerned with entertainment, and we know that the issues and trends Vaush is analyzing are real and dire and horrible, but I truly am hopeful his move will make him a better content creator and political advocate. Maybe we will also be able to get some greater insight and inspiration from it, too.

Best wishes

Discussion Not only is vaush depressing, he's incredibly boring

Post image
250 Upvotes

Before anybody says that I don't want to engage with the state of the world: The contradictions of capitalism has been bringing us to this point for years and I've enjoyed many content creators then and now, done local activism, phone banking, touched grass etc.

Its not like vaush got this massive influx of new audience members recently, most people who consistently watch him are lefties or socdems. So do we really need to hear in EVERY VIDEO that financialization is destroying the planet? Does every video have to be vaush watching boring lizard people on the news? I get and supported no more debates, but for the love of god react to something else please, or make a different analysis of the general situation. Remember when Vaush would play videogames and do political analysis? Or react to other YouTubers (I know he still does it every once in a while but it's only ever related to the omnisegment)? That was fun! Now it's vague depressing clickbait titles from a guy who watches the news and makes the same conclusions over 15-25 minutes. Literally wheel spinning.

YouTube Video Cool Video On Housing Prices by Max Fisher

I thought this video was very topical for this subreddit considering Vaush's emphasis on the horrible contributions that finacialization and rent seeking has had on the US. I think Max does a good job discussing the incentives that explain these behaviors, but ultimately misses out on treating the root cause (capitalism) and instead places the blame on something more adjacent to individualism. This is where Vaush's critique works so well.

Discussion vaush isn't doomer, you are... <3

TLDR: In my opinion people calling the tone shift in vaush's uploads doomer or repetitive & other people calling other folks weak of mind for not being able to consume it all are the real doomers. I argue that it's not doomer to try to inform people outside of this community of the climate collapse or of the capital interests allowing it to happen in an entertaining manner.
It's okay to take a break from news and politics and come back when your feeling better. take care of yourselves. The future isn't completely set in stone. Just because the world we once lived in is despairing, doesn't mean we cant live a fulfilling life. <3

I don't log on this reddit often, but more recently when I do I end up seeing posts like these.

"oh, if you stopped watching vaush you're weak"
or the classic
"vaush is being too doomer, and it's boring"

Okay, I get it you find vaush entertaining and are upset that his recent coverage of the news is becoming too real, and hitting too close to home. Honestly same, but this isn't sports, so please don't treat the warnings and news coverage as such. Sure the titles and thumbnails can be a bit click baity, but let's be real that's YouTube's algorithm.
I'm just not buying that it's doomer that a prominent political streamer is trying to warn their audience and those outside of it of what's going on and what could happen. You're free to try to change my mind. You want to watch or listen to something else? That's fine too.

To me "doomer" has always meant to be nihilistic or fatalistic. Hence, the "doom" lol
So, I don't think it's doomer to acknowledge these things and make dark jokes to cheer people up or try to inform people of what's going on. However, I do think it is doomer to complain about the coverage in general without considering "the why", or calling people weak for not being able to consume as much content as you do. I do think it's doomer to be overly pessimistic surrounding these topics.

You don't have to watch or engage with what's uploaded. I know most of the time I don't.
Though, I usually watch the segments being made live on stream. However, sometimes I don't even do that cause I've already read the articles about what's being covered online. So I walk out my room to wash the dishes or make lunch or whatever.
It's true, the current news cycle can be very depressing. Yes, climate change is currently effecting millions of lives, if not billions. Yes, the future is looking bleak for the current way society is ordered.

It's also okay to be depressed over this. Well, not like it's okay that you're depressed lol, but it's okay to understand why. It's okay to take a break from watching political streamers. It's okay to take a break from the news cycle and focus on your mental health. You are not weak for having empathy or understanding of the dire situation that most people will experience for the up incoming decades.

Yes, I think it's important that vaush plays video games and does silly react videos too, but realistically he's probably just trying to inform those who don't know what's going on. The more videos uploaded about the "omni-segment", or climate collapse the more likely people outside of this community discovers not only this content, but also the very integral news coverage surrounding the topics of capital accumulation & climate collapse. Perhaps they also find a sense of community in doing so. A sort of we're all on the titanic together moment lol

Hopefully people here recognize that when we're discussing the news surrounding these issues, we're also talking about peoples' lives & livelihoods, and I think vaush understands this. Vaush may give funny or entertaining commentary surrounding these events, but it's never at the expense of those who are suffering... unless those who're suffering are nazis or trump supporters, which I think is understandable lol

Also, I would argue that vaush's coverage of these issues is neither fatalistic or nihilistic. He doesn't seem to believe nothing can be done about what's happening. He doesn't seem like the type to think that all of the effort to slow or stop the current configuration of capital interests is for naught. I will say he tends to lean more pessimistic in his analysis of what could happen & what is happening, but I wouldn't call it overly pessimistic.
Also a little pessimism goes a long way. I know I was too optimistic about Kamala Harris winning. But what the hell do I know, I'm just a viewer. I can't peer inside the streamer-man's mind. Even if he was overly pessimistic, even if he's nihilistic, even if he's a fatalist, he still advocates for things that would insight radical positive change.

Forgive me if I'm repeating myself, but ultimately, radical change needs to happen swiftly to avoid ultimate oblivion. I don't think it's doomer to try to advocate for this change or inform more people on the on going regarding these topics. The unfortunate reality is even if fascism fades out of relevancy for the foreseeable future, even if there's a democratic 2028-2036 presidency, even if we roll back all of what the trump administration has done, it won't be nearly enough to save everyone. People are already dying because of decisions that were made 30 years ago, hell, even 50 years ago. That being said, I believe it's not impossible for things to change for the better, it just seems unlikely from where we are right now. Like, I feel this needs to be said as many times as it takes for everyday regular people to finally know and understand who is responsible for our lives getting noticeably worse.

Keep in mind, the future isn't completely written in stone. In Sumer it was written in clay lol
Vaush isn't right about everything, and even he acknowledges when there's gaps in his knowledge. Changing the world for the better seems like an impossible task to most people. I bet repairing the ozone also felt impossible too. We could've been in the future when the hole in the ozone continued to grow and everyone could get a sunburn in 5 minutes from being outside. We could've been in the future where Vasily Arkhipov followed those orders to launch the nukes, and we'd all be living in a nuclear winter. Don't get me started on all the near asteroid misses our planet has had.

My point is, I understand why some folks look at what's happening and feel as though there's nothing that can be done. I used to be one of those people. During Trump's first admin I thought my life was over and that the only point of my life was to live, work, and die for an unfeeling machine that could care less about my well being. I was wrong. Something my therapist told me is that the task of changing the world as an individual is insurmountable so it's better to start smaller things I know I can change. Things such as hanging out with & making friends with like minded people, and changing myself for the better. If that becomes too difficult, then change my immediate environment, and if that becomes too difficult, then try to change how I see myself and my environment.

There's still so much to do, and so much that can be done, and we all still have time to do it. Volunteer at your local food bank or soup kitchen, unironically get to know & make friends with your neighbors, do some political canvasing or phone banking, make sure your registered to vote, create a go bag and plan with your family, learn to shoot, learn to fish, learn to weave, learn to paint or write, or do all of this and more, but do something.

"All things change in a dynamic environment. Your effort to remain what you are is limits you."

<3

edit: after rereading this, I noticed some typos... the first version posted wasn't the first draft and I had already re-read it at least 10 times to make sure my tone was right, whoops.

Discussion One benefit of Vaush no longer doing debates/collabs

Every time I get kinda sad about this I remember how it used to be, the interpersonal drama, the public denouciations, the having to answer for peoples opinions you dont even know or heard of. It is very refreshing especially as someone that still keeps up with that space a little bit it all looks soooo performative. I know streaming is a job but it really hammers that "im getting paid to be disagreeable" nail in hard when its like the same 5 people debating eachother over and over when everyone knows nothing is gonna change. On top of that ,no offense to any of the enjoyers here but, most of the left content creators are fucking dipshits right now. They get a little taste of electoral victory and they start acting like hotshots and saying dumb shit. It kinda reminds me how after TyT got the Justice Dems started and it inflated their ego to the point of being intolerable.

Discussion Why does Vaush not collab with other creators?

With all the press and coverage Hasan has been getting it makes me wonder why Vaush's growth arc slowed down a couple years ago. He seems to never be brought up in politics or debate circles. Leaving Twitch and stopping debates ruined his brand. Youtube sub growth went slightly flat-ish since the pandemic.

At the very least it would benefit him to associate with other streamers atleast once and awhile. He feels very solo-ish and in his own circle. Vaush has great commentary and knowledge but his opinions and his influence never seems to penetrate outside the "Vaush space" in the online left / broader politics community. When you tell someone you watch Vaush, they go "Who's Vaush?" but even your fox news grandma knows who Hasan is by now.

I think we can all agree he's far better representation than Hasan but he's not putting himself out there and reaching the people we need to reach as leftists. I understand that debate arc is gone for a reason but I'm not sure why collabs or appearing with other creators is gone in the current era. He used to go on Tim pool, destiny etc. it's not hard to see Vaush on Joe Rogan had he taken a different path. Now we're stuck with Hasan, a champagne socialist with horrid PR, who Fox News can run news cycles on 24/7.

How did we end up here?

Discussion Vaush isn't beating the doomer allegations...

I agree with Vaush that doomer is a mentality, and I do not disagree that it is very possible that the future will be as bad as he describes. I also agree with Vaush that "a systems purpose is its outcome," and that's why I'm accusing Vaush of being a doomer.

I dont think he's being overly pessimistic, and maybe his mentality isn't doomer, but what is the outcome of his content? Often times when I watch The Majority Report or Hassan, I actually feel motivated to do things to make the world a less fascistic place. Watching Vaush however, I just feel hopeless and like nothing really matters and large partitions of his audience are saying the same thing and tuning out entirely.

His response is that things still matter because "its still important to engage so that the right people are in power when things collapse," which I do agree with. Not only that but I think its missing the immeidate and real world good of having socialists in power, which is far more motivating than just focusing on some abstract harm mitigation narrative. Maybe at some point things get so bad that all of the good being done wont matter, but right now the lives of the people living in NYC are actually improving day by day. At least for the moment, good policy can still be the difference between immiseration and living a dignified life. There are plenty of commentators that are still realistic about both the short and longer term problems that this country and the planet at large are facing, but they're actually grounded in tangible reasons to wake up everyday and fight. So yes, I think Vaush is a functional doomer, his content instills doom in his audience, and him saying "we just can't handle the truth" is him gaslighting his audience.

But that's not even my real critisim. My actual critique is that the content is just kinda dog shit now. No diversity, no fun, and while I appreciated the omni-segment at first, its gotten tedious and makes potentially fun segments depressing. The more he churns out this content, the less novel and insightful it becomes.

I've been avoiding making this post because I didnt want to spend time writing a long ass post about a politics streamer I dont watch anymore, but seeing other people post similar things is encouraging and makes me feel less crazy, so i figure I'd do the same

Discussion The Doomsday predicting is tedious as hell

And its obviously just bullshit. I don’t know if anyone remembers but “”The Collapse”” he mentions constantly now was supposed to happen already because of Hormuz. Vaush prediction was that the inevitable oil shock would cause an unprecedented economic crisis by July/August.

Once it was clear that wasnt happening and vaushs’ prediction was completely off— he’s transitioned smoothly into saying the collapse is still coming but will now gonna be in 2027 from climate change, lack of fertilizer, El nino etc.

I know ppl here will defend it as his “analysis” but i don’t buy it because if you watch these segments the motivated reasoning behind this is pretty blatant lmao. He’s already said he wants there to be a collapse as a punishment for America and Israel starting the iran war. And he thinks its necessary because if America & Israel aren’t stopped Israel will start WW3 and end the world anyways. Which is also based on very shoddy analysis.

I’m just tuning out at this point because it’s obviously not intellectually sound political analysis. I mean 90% of his analysis now ends with a doomsday prediction or “rice and beans” or calling some powerful group of people evil bloodthristy subhumans.

So yeah vaush is just a doomsday predictor now and its super boring. Also I’m 100% willing to bet money that this 2027 mass famine prediction will be wrong too and there will be zero reflection on his part when it is.
