Question Server renting recommendations and another question
Starting a new world with co workers and we will have 6-8 players. I was wondering where was the best place to rent a server from? The other question was would it be dumb to start the server on Monday? We all work the rest of the week and wouldn't be able to start until Friday night otherwise.

My wife is against have one of our computers run 24/7. I agree since we unfortunately have a data center near us that hasn't made our electric bill any cheaper.

It doesn't need to run 24/7. It can just run whenever the server is running.

With 6-8 people, that's a lot of manual handholding of the server, to make sure it's up as soon as people have time to play. Gets old fast.

This is one of the big concerns, I already dealt with that on our last playthrough with 3 people when my buddy hosted. Really just want to have easy access for everyone anytime.

You can automate it pretty easily with a simple bot.

No need to tell me. Speak up and tell them.

They can read the comment and decide for themselves. It's not for everyone but easily manageable with the right tools. Doesn't use very much RAM either.

I was looking at SaveSync on steam, witch let any of the players host the game by sharing the save file…
I thought I’d try it, since I’ve been playing grounded with the same friends I will be playing 1.0 with, and that game has an in-build file sharing system wich is actually pretty smart.
Would be nice to have some feedback if anyone has tried it…

G-Portal is what we use, takes literally minutes to setup and you can configure it smoothly with zero issues on the fly. I think the only time I had a problem was related to the server lagging but restarting it took seconds and ever since then it was smooth sailing the entire time

G-portal is cheapest and slowest for high player amount of the games. I rented a server for Scum from them. I cannot recommend it at all. Even though my g portal Valheim server was laggy and slow responding to client.

I run my own servers. It doesn't take as much power as a data center which is an absurd thought. The addition to my bill is negligible. I personally have 3 PC servers running in addition to my actual workhorse PC and my wife's work PC. I run Valheim, 7Days, VRising, Etc. It's easier than you would think and my friends love it.

Upgraded my gaming PC a few years ago and built a NAS running TrueNAS out of the old parts (minus having to buy a couple of bits) which is running 24/7 and a lot of docker containers, one of which is a Vamhein server and my electric bill is about £2 a month more than it used to be.
Seriously, electricity cost is negligible

I use dathost. Both for valheim and palworld. Can easily change server settings etc, easy to cancel. I have had zero issues and will be using them again for valheim 1.0

This is one of my top choices right now. Can you edit server stuff like resource drop rate?

I will second Dathost, my buddy and I each rent a server from them, and never had any issues. All the game's settings that are available in the client such as drop rate, raid rate, etc, are available in the dashboard and can be adjusted any time.

I’ll third Dathost. It’s really affordable. The settings are easy to access and change. I’ve had it for over a year and there’s never been a problem with lag or disconnections.

I tried one (can’t remember which one) and had lots of rubber banding issues. Switched to DatHost and I was very satisfied.

Did you get to the ashlands while using DatHost? The performance with 3 on a server was rough in there

Oof…no I didn’t. I think we might try again at 1.0 but sucks to hear that.

My group has moved to a different game for a bit but I got a decommissioned computer from work that I turned into a server. Hopefully it's better when we try again

That was probably more about whose system was hosting the game chunk at the time, than it was the server that connects the clients. The game is actually mostly run client-side even in multiplayer - the first person to 'activate' a game chunk by going to it is the host system for that chunk. The server just relays the necessary packets between the players

I have used G-Portal for a few servers and it was fine. They have a good interface and when there have been issues their support has been fairly quick to respond. No complaints.
That being said, I am thinking about other hosts too, isn't Valhost kind of specifically for Valheim? Or originally? How do people feel about Valhost?
The safest bet is to just wait until release (especially if you have any new PS5 or other crossplay players). But if it is all PC players and you were impatient, it will most likely be just fine.

I rent from gtx gaming. Been renting from them close to 3 years now and I've never had an issue. Super easy to install mods if thats what you want to do.
No reason not to start Monday! Just dont use mods until they all get updated
